  1. I'm playing a save in the ninth tier, and I have experienced slightly the opposite problem of players being too good. To be fair, pretty much my whole squad of 'pregens' is at the right level. However, I also have two outstanding players, one of which would probably not look too out of place in League One.

Is it possible to paste a couple of screenshots of the players that were generated, so we can see what sort of level you were talking about?

Here's the guys I was referring to earlier. They're definitely a bit too good for the Essex County league.

*In my case, the difference is probably explained by my team's reputation in the custom database, rather than anything obviously wrong with the pregen system.

  2. I've run FM19 on my Intel Atom tablet with 4GB of RAM with a save that had several leagues loaded. it even managed 3D, although I only use 3D for the replays as I prefer 2D. Although I definitely wouldn't recommend it,the performance did exceed my (initially low) expectations. The biggest problem that I encountered was actually the battery usage. Boy did it chew through my battery.

I still use that tablet for FM20, but these days I do so via Steam streaming from my main desktop PC.

    Hi,

New to the forum, please be gentle. I'm a huge fan of the old versions of FM, specifically 06 and 08. I was wondering if anyone plays these versions on modern systems? I'm thinking of buying a modern laptop with no OS and installing Windows 7 on it, can anyone see any issues with this? Specifically looking at this https://www.ebuyer.com/947189-asus-m509da-ryzen-3-8gb-256gb-ssd-15-6-no-os-laptop-m509da-bq349

Would love to be able to play a huge in-depth version of 08 with a large number of leagues and full database.

    Thanks for any help guys.

I still play FM2006. It goes like a rocket, even on an Intel Atom tablet, so you won't have any problems with performance.

You'll probably have to jump through hoops to get it running on Windows 10 though. (Windows 7 is much easier.)

  4. @Brother Ben In the editor, look at the reputation and the training /youth system scores at each specific club. Those are the things that I've found make the greatest difference to the quality of the players produced (assuming FM is creating regens for you to populate the teams without players). I've found that good youth and training facilities lead to good quality players in the squad (relatively speaking within the nations pool of players of course).

So, if you get to a lower division where all the teams have very low reputations, and all the facilities have a score of 1 out of 20, this is probably as low as you'd want to go.

There's other factors too, but that's how I try to scale it.

  5. My personal opinion: I'm not a fan of unlimited potential, as I don't think it is realistic - bionic implants and some kind of matrix data dump aside, no matter what I do, I'll never be as fast as Usain Bolt or as smart as Albert Einstein.

What I am in favour of is raising the PA ceiling a bit, but making it much harder for a player to reach that limit. This would avoid the issue of users that inspect the PA and CA values thinking that a player has peaked early. (Although, in my opinion those values aren't really meant to be known to the user in absolute terms anyway, even if they are absolute values under the hood.)

  6. My software house also had to work from home for around four months, so I can appreciate your situation. As you said though, regardless of the upheaval, our industry is in the privileged position of being able to continue working and there is a lot of benefit in terms of mental health in being able to keep some kind of normal routine, even though it's working from home instead of the office.

I'd like to think that the majority of the fan base will be patient and understanding of the situation. Whatever new features make it into release at the end of the year, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on them.

  7. I spent a couple of months making a New Zealand league system for FM19. I forward ported it to FM20, but it was a quick update due to me no longer having the time to focus on it.

What I learned from the experience, is that there's a lot of effort that goes into making a multi-league system work just right and making sure there is a noticeable difference from, say the tenth tier and a slightly higher division in the league system.

But the big thing is that the fixtures need to be tested over a number of seasons to ensure that the fixtures generate correctly each season. If you're considering using an editor file that hasn't been well used or tested, I'd highly recommend holidaying at least three or four seasons into the future as a test before you start your main save to make sure that there's no unexpected surprises. It would be really frustrating to get a couple of seasons into a save to then find out that the fixtures don't generate in your next season.

  8. Back on topic.

I always start with a lower league team. Usually a semi-professional team so that I can have some form of squad retention.

When I join a new team, for the first season, I won't buy any new players unless there is a critical gap (I once joined a team with no central midfielders). Instead, I'll try to come up with a system that attempts to get the best out of the existing squad. That gives the existing players time to prove themselves. After that, I normally try to buy/loan a maximum of 2-3 players per season, and slowly improve the squad over a number of years, rather than buy and sell players en masse.

I also like to give older experienced players their last hurrah by integrating a mix of older, more talented players in the more static positions with younger, more athletic players covering or running off of them.

  9. I'm not a tactical guru by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have a few suggestions:

    • If you want to try out tactical changes, I'd strongly suggest using FM Touch. The reason is two-fold: firstly, there's no tactical familiarity, so the players will play your tactics to the best of their abilities. Secondly, the games come thick and fast, so you can pretty much do nothing else except for play games, and tweak tactics.

    • Start with a blank canvas. Personally, when I get a new version of FM, I start with a completely neutral tactic with no settings applied at all. I then watch the games (in full match mode) and slowly make tactical tweaks, one setting at a time, until my team are playing roughly the way that I want them to.  The logic to this approach is that, if I limit concurrent changes, and only modify a single setting at a time, it is much easier to see how that setting is interpreted by the players/match engine.

Now that FM comes with basic preset tactics, you don't necessarily have to start totally from scratch, but I would recommend, that if you start with one of the default tactics, that you only make small discrete changes at a time, so you can see how your changes affect things.

    • When you're working on tactics, watch the games on full match mode for a bit (or at the very least comprehensive). For me, I learn so much about what works (and conversely what doesn't work) within my team's tactics from watching my team's transitions, and turnovers. When I'm testing out a tactic, I'll often pause the game at every transition, to try and determine why the play broke down and the general shape of both teams at that moment. If there is a trend I may then make a tactical tweak and see if it improves things.

I'd also suggest posting a thread in the tactical forum. If you expand on your original post to also cover the team that you're currently using, and the the type of football that you want to play, and make it clear that you want to learn, then I am sure that somebody on that forum will be able to give you good advice, and even more importantly, explain the logic behind their suggestions in great detail, so that you can learn from it.
