  1. Hey @Dan BHTFC: I've recently released my FM20 version of the NZ league system down to level 11 (your level 24 editor file a couple of years back inspired me to try to do the same sort of thing for the NZ system).

Anyway, one thing that I've noticed as being different this year, is that, by default ALL clubs in the system sign youth players on paid youth contracts. To stop this for amateur teams, I had to select all of the amateur teams, and manually apply set the contract type to amateur for all of the allowable squad statuses. This may be an extra step that you'll need to do.

Keep up the good work by the way. I'm looking forward to using your editor file again this year when it is released.

  2. v594 has now been released.  The main aim of this update is to try and make a more noticeable difference between the top teams in the country and the lower regional divisions.

    In particular

    • Competition and team reputations have been moved upwards for the top three tiers, to allow for a bigger difference in reputation between the best teams in the country and the rest of the lower reputation regional teams. Note: A-League team reputations were also increased slightly, so that there is still a reasonable reputation gap between Wellington Phoenix (the highest reputation team in NZ) and Auckland City (the next highest reputation team).
    • Higher reputation regional teams can now sign part time and non contract players.
    • Fixed an issue where all teams in the pyramid could sign players on paid youth contracts.
    • All teams now have a positive bank balance at the start of the season, rather than starting the game with $0 in the bank and having to wait a season for additional income streams, such as player subscriptions, to come in.

  3. Just to be clear. Did you change the ratio of all injuries by 20% or just selected injuries? The reason I ask is that, as quoted above, if we only have control of how likely a specific injury is to occur compared to the other injuries, and not the total injury count, increasing all injuries by 20% wouldn't change the ratio right? (1/2 and 1.2/2.4 are both 0.5 as an example). What you potentially could do is increase the time of recovery by 20% across the board, so that the same number of injuries occur but, overall, players are out for 20% longer.

Great work by the way. This is definitely something that interests me.

  4. No worries. It's a good way to start the new series and get used to FM before starting a serious save.

I've made a start on my next round of changes based on experience from playing this save last year. The first change will be to try and make the upper and lower leagues feel a bit different from one another, with a few teams at the top regional leagues allowed to sign part time players, and the top couple of divisions allowed to sign non-contract players for the more important positions within their squads.

I'll also add some money to the bank balances - every team starting with $0 in the bank wasn't the best of ideas, as it took a season for the first sponsorship money to come through, causing teams to end up in debt.

  5. Hi all,

I have ported my fairly comprehensive FM19 NZ league pyramid to FM 20.

Here's the initial version. This version is fully playable. However, I intend to add a more refined version in the coming days (most likely this weekend):

NZ League System FM 20 v599.fmf

    This includes:

    • The New Zealand National league
    • The Regional Premier Leagues
      • Central Premier League
      • Mainland Premier League
      • Football South Premier League
      • NRFL Premier Division
    • Regional First Divisions
      • Central Federation Premier League
      • NRFL Division One
      • Nelson Division One
      • Donald Gray Championship
      • Capital Premier League
    • Regional Second Divisions
      • NRFL Division Two
      • Nelson Division Two
      • Presidents Cup
      • Capital First Division
    • Regional Third Divisions
      • AFF/NFF Conference
      • Northland Premier Division
      • WAIBOP Premier Division
      • Nelson Division Three
      • Patrons Cup
      • Capital Second Division
    • Regional Fourth Divisions
      • AFF Championship
      • NFF Division One
      • Northland Division Two
      • WAIBOP Championship
      • Capital Third Division
    • Regional Fifth Divisions
      • AFF Division One
      • NFF Division Two
      • Northland Division Two
      • Bay of Plenty Division One
      • Waikato Division One
      • Capital Fourth Division
    • Regional Sixth Divisions
      • AFF Division Two
      • NFF Division Three
      • Northland Division Three
      • Waikato Division Two
    • Regional Seventh Divisions
      • AFF Division Three
      • NFF Division Four
      • Waikato Division Three
    • Regional Eighth Divisions
      • AFF Division Four
    • Regional Ninth Divisions
      • AFF Division Five
    • Chatham Cup (the NZ FA Cup)
    • Several regional cup competitions
    • New towns, cities, and regional weather patterns have been added to give the game a more authentic feeling (this will also impact playing as Wellington Phoenix)

I probably won't have time to update the promotion or relegation of the minor regional leagues, but I do intend to update the main divisions, and to add some more competitions (Canterbury and Otago are top of my list).

  6. I haven't experienced that myself. But, compared to that reaction, I'd prefer it if too much praise made a less professional or determined player more likely to become complacent, an ambitious player more likely to want to go to a bigger team (as they're obviously too good for this level if they're getting so much praise), or other similar negative, yet realistic, unintended outcomes. They could still act positively to the praise itself. But, too much praise too frequently should lead to other negative effects.

Obviously, the above is a simplification - you'd still expect perfectionists to hold themselves to a high standard, and possibly not react that well to praise when they feel they haven't earned it. You wouldn't usually expect a full on meltdown though.

The Double. I loved this game and wrote to the company that made it with a load of suggestions for the sequel if there was one. They never replied and I don't think there was ever a sequel.

I spent many nights of my childhood with the lights off and the TV dimmed down to the least brightest settings, so that my parents didn't realise that I was playing into the wee small hours on a school night.

The Double was pretty ahead of its peers for me. It even had attribute masking (you had to get scout reports). I can't imagine what those who complain about FMs match engine would make of The Double's '3D' match engine though.

I still play it every now and again on a C64 emulator. It was a bloody awesome game for its time.

  8. General usability question: Does anybody know how to control which monitor FM displays on when running in full screen mode. FM 19 displays on the left of three monitors, whilst FM 20 displays on the centre one (which is my primary display).

I'm not concerned, as I'd prefer it to display on the centre monitor anyway. I'm just curious how I managed to display FM 19 on a different screen, in case I want to move it in the future.)

Personally I've never understood the attraction of Full Highlights. The joy in FM for me is getting into my own little world with real life players being replaced by regens, real life managers being replaced by players. The development of how leagues and competitions play out with some giant clubs falling hard and other minnows reaching the top. For that I want to get through FM at a decent pace. Playing a full years worth of FM and only being five seasons in doesn't seem worthwhile to me but each to their own.

When I'm watching a match, I really like to focus on each transition, who is in space, who is tightly marked, who has limited options due to how the opposition are playing, how am I dealing with the shape of the opposition, what is causing play to break down. Based on this, I'll make lots of micro changes to the system based on how the game is developing. I just don't feel like any other highlight mode gives me that level of control and visibility.

I also enjoy and can relate to your playing style. I guess that's one reason why I played FM2006 for over 12 years before finally moving to FM2018.

I do understand this, but I feel it's incredibly limiting. I like to take my favourite FM club over every year, play youth only and build up a defensive style of play that gets us up the league.

This current incarnation of the club vision would have me sacked in a season. So, I'm either going to have to play as another club or hope to God, they're forgiving. The very fact you can't even approach the board with a vision is very poor in my eyes.

I wouldn't worry just yet. Presumably, the club vision can be modified using either the pre or the in game editor.

  11. I've only played a few matches due to study for upcoming exams. My general observations at this point are:

    • Overall, I really like the changes. I certainly feel a lot more aware of what the board expect of me and, like a real management role, I can base my decisions around fulfilling these objectives. I've only tried a couple of clubs so far (Sutton United and Distillery) and already I can see differences in expectations that would alter how I would approach things.
    • I'm too early into my save to make use of it much, but I've already used the development centre to promote a couple of promising youth players to the first team in areas where I'm short of depth.
    • My first use of the preferences screen was pretty confusing, but I eventually found what I was looking for. I'm just used to the old settings, so it will take time to get used to. In any case, it's a set and forget kind of thing so it's not a big deal.
    • The match engine will take some getting used to. When I start a new FM, I usually start with a tactic with absolutely no instructions set to see how the match engine behaves in it's default state, and then start to tweak things from there. In FM 18 and 19, this produced a pretty generic, but believable style of football that I could start to tweak and build from.  For FM 20, oh my word. I wondered what I'd just walked into (more on that below as I can't figure out how to indent my second level bullets).
    • Of particular concern were the huge number of crossfield balls played by my fullbacks, to the fullback or winger on the other side of the pitch. Lowering the mentality of my fullbacks to fullback > defend, seems to have reduced the number of these crossfield passes significantly, so I'll have to take a look at the individual player instructions in more detail and see if I can reduce it further for the more adventurous fullback and wingback roles.
    • One other thing that I'm yet to get to the bottom of is how easily strikers are able to get behind the opposition's defensive line on long direct counter attacks. This happens for both me and the opposition. It seems like the strikers react much quicker to these events than the defenders do, and end up five or six yards ahead of them, leading to a huge number of one on one situations (even when trying to play compact and with much lower defensive line.
    •  Finally, the goalkeepers need to be drug tested. I don't know what they're on, but I want some! I'm starting to think that superman, batman, spiderman etc. have all gone incognito as lower league goalkeepers.

Overall, I'm happy with the general FM 20 game experience. For the short term, I will probably continue with FM19 a bit more though, because, right now I just don't have enough free time to give the new game the time that it deserves and requires to get to grips with the new match engine. I'm looking forward to my exams finishing in a couple of weeks so that I can have a decent go at getting to grips with things.

So if I get this right, I have a cromebook and I can downloaded fm20 when it comes out and no need for Stadia or am I missing something?

You'd have to wait for Stadia, as FM20 isn't supported on Chrome OS.

You could potentially use Steam's in-built streaming service though:

HP 608 G1 runs Windows like a pig in treacle though, what with being an  Windows 8.1 based device with an Atom CPU and dreadful RAM.

Which is precisely why somebody would opt to use Stadia to run FM. Running Stadia, rather than the native hardware should be a huge improvement, performance wise, for those on low powered machines. For what it's worth, I find the performance of FM on my tablet adequate, once the game is up and running (it does take an age to reach the main start screen during the initial game load, but once I'm at that point the performance is surprisingly fluid - it certainly exceeded my expectations.) For clarity, I normally use the tablet for games on the sofa or when I'm travelling - you can't beat the portability of an 8 inch tablet. If I'm at home alone, I will use my workstation (which has a Ryzen 2400G CPU and 32GB of RAM for comparison.)

In any case, my original message was in terms of perspective how FM scales to smaller screens, rather than advocating for use of underpowered hardware - the navigation around FM is mostly trouble free, even on an 8 inch screen, so I can imagine a future where, using Stadia, it would be possible to play FM using even a large phone and still have a reasonable user experience.

Here's my tablet running FM next to a tin of beans for size comparison purposes (and for comfort eating purposes if the next match turns out to be tough) :

  14. Damn. I have to be good this week as I have software engineering exams next Wednesday and Friday. I will definitely take a look at the club objectives and play the first match, but after that I will have to wait for another week.

Hmm... Should I study binary search trees or instead create a Christmas tree formation... Tough decisions await.
