  1. I wonder which feed I’ve been watching here compared to the rest of you guys here.
Coz in mine, it’s the same commentators we get for the Premier League worldwide broadcast (i.e. Andy Townsend, Jim Beglin, Peter Drury, Jim Proudfoot, etc.)

I think the problem you have at the moment is that you have Sterling, Rashford, Foden and Grealish all fighting it out for that left side role and whoever misses out gets moved to the right where they’re less effective.

Whoever one you leave out is going to raise questions and as soon as someone has a bad/average game it’s easy (and lazy) for people to say ‘well x would have been a better pick there’.

Is the general consensus that Mount deserves to have the central role nailed down or is it just expected because Southgate really rates him?  Seems a bit odd that there’s loads of debate about who gets the left hand slot when there doesn’t seem to be any debate about whether we should play Mount, Foden or Grealish in the middle of the three.

What makes you so sure that Foden is better on the left flank as opposed to the right? Just because Pep has been using him there, I suppose.

I actually would play him in the right if I were to manage someone like him. He'd be more influential and get on the ball more often. Better able to pick up runners with a diagonal over the top pass, or drive toward goal on his favored left foot, take a shot, or just add to the possession game.

It's just like when Messi was very young. He just grew more and more into that type of play-style and I think the English would benefit more from Foden if he grows on that flank and develops even more into his game from there.

If he's only put out left by his managers though, I can't see him improving much more than he already is.

  3. Wow, didn't know that my last post would cause such a stir. Tongue-in-cheek guys, gosh! Almost seems like everyone now has to tread on eggshells to avoid triggering any backlash around here.

Was just hailing the eternal optimism that sometimes strays to overconfidence of the English fan, nothing more.

Can't wait for tomorrow! At last, the real games have come! These next 24 hours will be the slowest of all, I'm sure.

If it's not Germany, it's France or Spain.

If that’s the case I can see us playing 2 defensive minded CMs (DMs) in the knockout stages.

Croatia aside we shouldn’t be too worried about the group stages. And if it helps Stones partner with some cover and do well then we might be okay.

Ah, Man. United to beat Villarreal 6 - 1 with Fernandes and Cavani to score 3 goals each... Scholes: They would be blown out of the water. The United squad is superior and should win pretty easily. ESPN: There is no way that United can lose this game!

    ...and then, what happened?

Oh gosh! English fans.. You guys are so cute (:

But it would be extremely surprising, after so many years of discussing about how complicate ME refines are, knock-ons, wibble-wobble, side-effects etc. etc., to see they now bump out with a new ME for womens football.

Because in my opinion womens football requires a different ME.

I like the point @majesticeternity made above, about how weather and pitch conditions don't affect AT ALL the gameplay and the physics (plus other aspects of the game), so for me it's a move I truly struggle to understand. I don't usually follow womens football, the few times I did I was bored to death so at the moment I don't think I will ever play it. I'm not sure how commercialy good this idea is, but SI has always been in the front line with social battles so I support this choice, if and when it's going to happen.

I'm 100% certain that in FM 2014, weather does affect the game-play and physics of things. Unless that changed in some later game editions, then that is really a regression from SI and a poor one at that.

I haven’t watched Spain enough lately to comment, other than to say it took me too long to realise you weren’t suggesting bringing Fernando Torres out of retirement :D

Fernando Torres up front? We might as well go with Alvaro Morata! :D

Actually though, Fernando was quite good upfront till he just lost so much confidence after the Chelsea move. Amazing how that seems to happen to a lot of strikers going to Chelsea.

We have some interesting midfielders in the team. Just go with Ferran up top, and surround with him support everywhere. It's worked before, no reason it might not work again.

Also didn’t watch but his recent record for them under Lucho isn’t great.

Well, I did. He had at least two clear chances in the game. Couldn't take any!

I don't think this team would be successful with him up top. I think they should go for F. Torres up front alone as a F9 with a lot of supporting midfielders...

Same problem we've had for a few years now.., with no really clinical finisher since D. Villa.

How many set pieces have Messi, Beckham, Juninho, JWP scored in a World Cup Semi Final?...

And taking set-pieces is just one particular skill. I could’ve said the same thing if they had one of the best passers of a football (like Riquelme) or one of the best headers (like Crouch) or something else very specific.
Those players didn’t offer greater than standard in other areas of the game but were highly valued members due to their unusual skill. A very powerful shot. Two-footedness. Prodigious dribbling ability. Anything

England has no shortage of quality options to take right-footed set pieces.

Way to miss the point. I didn’t say they don’t have quality right-footed players to take set-plays.
When you have someone that’s sitting at the table with the best in the world at a particular skill, you give him serious consideration.
I just assume Southgate did and he and he alone will be responsible for the decision, like always.

  10. When it comes to controlling a midfield in a big game, the England squad will not compete favorably with the other traditional bigger sides. I fear that their midfield is weak and will necessitate a long ball/passes and/or counter-attacking style of play.

I'm fascinated by how England even after all this time haven't learnt that "controlling the midfield" is key in BIG matches.

That's the reason Chelsea won their 2nd UCL trophy last week. That's the reason some of the spanish sides have been successful in the past. And Germany too.

    They just never learn...

  11. I think people seriously underestimate how much having nearly-perfect set-plays are in a big international tournament. Most of these teams are more or less evenly matched especially if all the big boys play to their potential and reach the meaty stages of the competition.

It is in games like that, and in times like that, that you will have just the little edge of having someone that can just produce some bit of magic from something so "simple". I've seen it so many times with Beckham, Juninho, and Messi or even on long-throws. There are times in games that having just that little extra wins it surprisingly.

I would've taken him over Saka, or one of the right-backs.

Well we shall see how it goes.

  12. The superleague that I had from this site in FM 2014 was superb. It had relegation and promotion. It was a true world super league. It was exciting and challenging well into latter years.

This stuff they are proposing in real life Hasn't been thought through well enough though. It's not like that league. If it were, I would be in support.

All these English fans of clubs like Chelsea, Man. United, and Man. City should actually be ashamed of themselves having the nerve to complain about money taking over the game. Their clubs have been doing this the past few decades. I did not see these kind of reactions when Chelsea won their UCL trophy and all the league trophies due to the "investment" from Roman. When their clubs don't spend money, they call-in to shows and whip up a frenzy trying to get him to spend money. See Newcastle and how they've been like, we need money for new players. Where does it end? I could go on!

Why are all the big name managers suddenly in England? Do you think it's for the football? No! It's for the money. The Sky/BT contract that has shifted the power to the English sides and the premier league. They enjoy the benefits when it benefits them and cry foul when it doesn't seem to.

Implement things well and people might well change their minds. The current format of the Champions league does not make sense, if you compare it in an originalist sense to what it was meant to be. If I outline why I made that statement, this post will be too long.

Let's wait and see what happens.

  13. If I’m not mistaken, I came across a post by @Neil Brock that said that the player ratings algorithm has been changed. It had within it something like “don’t expect the ratings to be like they’ve been over the years. The period for such is over”.
I’m sure if you check his history you’d see the post. And he explained why it was changed.

For many FM17 was the benchmark but in my own opinion FM21 has surpassed it and now is the benchmark for future installments . With a new franchise coming out in June and looks to be very promising i am hoping this will give SI some serious competition to make this game a lot more better

Just imagine if they didn't mess up the Analysis tools and the Match-day UI.

I didn't get the game yet this year, but I might just get it when it's really on sale or better yet, free

You can deem me as "cheater" for that, but I keep in-game editor for rare cases like this.

For example once I had my GK sold to bigger league before window even opened. Knowing he is going away I've arranged a replacement of even better quality beforehand, So transfer window opens, one in one out and whole team comes to me questioning how could I let him go. All I could do was to promise to get a replacement when replacement was already there.

So yeah, for ridiculous s..t like this I keep the editor around

I think many people are opposite to you, like me. Once I use the editor, I feel that the save has been "tainted" and that I've got an unfair advantage over the AI. It just makes the game lose some of its value. Like the bible says, "FM is a honorable thing, with the save undefiled". (:

Its like a lot of the newest features of FM in recent seasons.

Overall it functions but parts of it are I think objectively broken.

So over all the final score is normally in line with how you are performing as a manager.

But transfers and match reactions are immersion breakingly broken because they don't seem to take into account any context of the current situation of the club.

Drawing away from home against 2nd is nothing but a great result under any circumstances my board though seem to be modeled on that one twitter crank who screams sack the manager if you don't win 5-0 every game and would rate that result at best a C.

In the summer as I said before I let a lot of youngsters go who IMO weren't going to make it so I could keep important players and retain youngsters who were, the board again almost suicidal rating all my dealings a D because they don't seem able to comprehend we have wage budgets that they had overspent on before I arrived.

We are currently 3rd or 4th in the league after gaining promotion last season overall rating A+ (accurate) rating for matches and transfers C- (fake news).

Did I just read that someone thought that something on FM was "breakingly broken"?

    Wow that's a new one! :rolleyes::D

  17. I just wonder whether this is the precursor to eventually changing the "Attributes" grade system to something similar and perhaps they wanted to sample how a subset of the FM community would welcome such a change to something that has been taken for granted for so many years and a bedrock to the game.

I think in FM 2022 or perhaps 2023 we would be seeing a similar change to the attributes grading of 1 - 20.
