Whats the best way to go about scouting opposition players when you're doing this challenge? Do most of you only rely on scouting opposition reports or do you go and scout the whole league when possible?
Just scouting opposition reports for me.
I also add some of my top former players to a shortlist and scout them when the attributes start moving to a range. This is just because I'm interested in how far they develop.

2040/41 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 2
It was another strong season. We spent all season in the top 5 and at one point it looked like we might even have a chance of automatic promotion or even a title. Eventually we finished 5th and had another chance at the promotion playoffs.
This year we went one step further than last year. After beating AJ Auxerre 3-2 in the quarterfinal, we then had another close game in the semifinal against FCSM. We eventually lost 2-3 when they scored an 89th minute winner.
With a full strength team we could match anyone in Ligue 2. Unfortunately we do not have a lot of depth, so with injuries, suspensions and international call-ups we suffer.
Bryan Phan Ba YP39a was again the top scorer in both our team and Ligue 2 with 34 goals. He is 'evens' favourite with the bookies to do it a 3rd time as well.
Raphael Bour YP39b was brought into the first team as Bryan's strike partner and contributed 13 goals and 5 assists. With these two up top, the future looks bright.
Julien Aubert YP28c had the most assists in Ligue 2.
Anthony Simon YP41a is the top prospect from this years intake and looks very promising.
Finally a season where the chairman didn't sell anyone. The results showed on the field with a good shot at promotion. I hope he learns from it.

@jstu9 I love the fact that your top assist maker is (by your lettering) the 9th best player in that particular intake, just shows that you never can tell which youth players will make it which is the beauty of this challenge
Congrats on promotion by the way
His second top scorer was 8th best in the intake of that year as well.

2039/40 Annecy FC season review - French League 2
Our form did drop off a bit after the chairman sold our best midfielder, but we managed to hold on to a record high 5th place and a playoff spot.
In the playoff quarterfinal we took an early 1-0 lead against Reims. Unfortunately they mounted a comeback and we eventually got knocked out 1-2 in a very short playoff effort.
A new star has risen through our ranks in Bryan Pham Ba YP39a who became our record goalscorer in a single season with 30 goals, our player of the season, made the league 2 team of the season and won the League 2 top scorer award.
Boris Amblard YP36b also had a great season with 10 goals and 10 assists from the right wing.
Unfortunately most of our top players are refusing to sign contract extensions. They say we don't have good enough players. Presumably talking about each other. We may only have 1 or 2 promotion attempts left before yet another rebuild.
Benali and Malungu were two key players sold by the chairman.
Infrastructure is fantastic now. We just need a new chairman who will keep hold of the decent players we have coming through.

Our chairman seems determined for us not to get promoted.
At the end of the midseason transfer window, we are sitting in 3rd place and in great form, but have a very small squad.......
Our new boy wonder is topping the scoring charts and looking good to break our club league scoring record for one season......
So with no need for more money, he decides to sell our best midfielder who my staff say is already a good Ligue 1 player.
Why not sell Bryan as well?
We have two other half decent central midfielders, but I cant help feeling this is the end of a promotion challenge.

2038/39 Annecy FC season review - French League 2
With so many players being sold in recent seasons, I decided to try to build up a new wave of young players and it almost cost us dearly. As the season closed out, we were dragged into a relegation battle but had just enough to get by. There were some pleasing performances from the young players and this looks like a good thing in the longer term. We also tried using two strikers in an attempt to score more goals. In past seasons I've mostly played 4-1-4-1 or 4-1-5-0.
After 10 consecutive seasons as top scorer, Alaa Saibi had to make way for Cyrille Rostand YP33g who scored 14 goals. One more than Saibi.
The toughest decision was replacing our record appearance holder, Abdalhadi Amara in goal. Apart from low self belief, Fabien Dumont YP38b, looks to be a decent long term replacement. With more consistency from him in goal, we should be capable of a much better league position.
Magnin was sold by my chairman, Barreau and Fekir were poached for compensation only, the rest were squad players sold by me with the hope of a big future payoff.

2020/21 HKFC season review - Hong Kong Premier League
This was quite frustrating playing with amateur players in a league of professional teams, knowing they could be poached at any time. Even when the youth intake came in, they could only be signed to amateur contracts. I signed them all basically because it doesn't cost anything.
There are not a lot of ways to gain income here, so I've no idea how we're going to become professional.
We had four players called up to the Hong Kong national team, but only Chan Man Chun got to play, earning 3 caps.
The League: 9th out of 10
Senior Shield: Semifinal
FA Cup: Semifinal
Sapling Cup: 5th in group out of 5
Top Scorer: Tom Allen - 6

@Fastbasher can you remember the reset date for the Hong Kong league? I remember from past saves there it's a long off season
I think it was in July.
The season runs from late Aug to mid May. Fairly standard except there is sometimes 2,3 or even 4 weeks between league games.
Malaysia had a huge off season.

Meet the new manager of HKFC in the Hong Kong Premier League. This is the only division in Hong Kong. There are 10 teams and 18 league games with the winner going into the 2nd preliminary round of the Asian Champions League. Only the last team gets relegated.
The players look quite decent for this level. The biggest problem I see is that we are the only amateur club in a professional league. The players are on amateur contracts. They won't sign new contracts, so can leave at any time for free.

Hong Kong is possible. Winner of the league goes into the second preliminary round.
The runner up goes into the Asian Confederation Cup playoff.
One relegation/promotion place. Only 18 league games, but some cups.

Ok, Singapore Champions go into the 1st preliminary round of Asian Champions League. But it looks like they have no promotion/relegation, like South Korea.
Hong Kong have entrants in the Asian confederations cup as another club comp to play in.

Been trying to get this going again but keep loading and quitting save in different leagues nothing that's keeping me going. Wanted to try in South Korean but doesn't look like any team gets relegated from the lowest tier. Look at Hong Kong as I've had a few good saves in the past there but again I can't see if they can ever qualify for continental competitions.
I'm looking at Hong Kong and Singapore as well, with a similar concern. They both had a team in the qualifying rounds of the 2019 Asians Champions League. I think one will be entered from 2020 or 2021.
Like you say for South Korea, they look not possible due to no promotion/relegation from the second tier.
China and Indonesia are both possible in Asia.

Sacked after finishing bottom of the Malaysian Premier League and getting relegated with DDM with one game to go.
This could be a fun league to play in and a good challenge, with some variety of competitions. But this squad was just too small to have a chance. The other team that I could have chosen was Kelantan Utd, who have achieved safety.
I never saw a youth intake. No idea when or even IF they have one.

Ooh, this is promising. According to the bookies we're expected to finish 9th out of 12. Only the bottom two go down, so I'll take that.
With no staff, I had to play both the DDM first team and the DDM U21 team in a preseason friendly and I got the steam achievement of playing a network game against another player. Bug?

And now for something a bit different to momentarily divert my attentions from the repetition of the French Ligue 2.
Meet the new manager of DDM (Dak-Dak Melawati FC), newly promoted to the Malaysian Premier League (2nd Tier).
There are only 12 players in the team. One decent player, Nicolás Dul. But unfortunately his contract expires in 11 days and he won't sign a new one. It looks like we'll be playing the first season with 11 players only.
There are no other staff members, so time to recruit some backroom staff.
There are two ways to qualify for the Asian Champions League in Malaysia. Finish in the top two of the Malaysian Super League (group stage for winner, qualifying round for runner up) or win the Malaysian FA Cup. In theory this means that you can qualify for the Champions League from the 2nd tier or even lower.
There are two other cups with a group stage and seemingly nothing serious to play for. An excellent place to develop youth.

got promoted and sacked after
That is crazy. I understand if the board were not happy at lack of youth players playing, but surely a promotion should more than make up for it. Not a sackable offence.

2037/38 Annecy FC season review - French League 2
It was a third straight 15th position. But this time we were steady throughout the season, stay around 15th, but always comfortably clear of the relegation places.
Alaa Saibi top scored again with 17. His contract is expiring, he wants a lot of money and my staff are advising not to renew the contract. Tough spot.
Jean-Michel Magnin YP37a is the latest top prospect to be brought into the first team.
Two of our former players, Gregoire Robert (Borussia Dortmund) and Nicolas Renucci (Olympic Marseille), have been called up to the French national team to play in the world cup. These are the type players we need to make a promotion attempt, but my chairman keeps selling them.
Five more 1st team players sold either by my chairman or for compensation only.
I'm feeling like a hamster on a treadmill. I continue to run, but am going nowhere.

2036/37 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 2
On the field it was a good season. We were in 12th place going into the final game of the season, with potential for a new record high. Unfortunately we lost and three teams overtook us to leave us in 15th. But I was still pleased with our performance throughout the season.
In the cup we had a disappointing 7th round exit. 7th round is when Ligue 2 teams enter the draw and we lost to fellow Ligue 2 team, FCSM on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The board expects 9th round as a minimum each season. Historically this is where we usually bow out. The reason is because Ligue 1 teams enter in the 9th round. All of our seven 9th round exits were to Ligue 1 teams.
National and National 2 teams enter in the 5th round.
Alaa Saibi...... copy/paste from previous seasons. 16 goals.
Julien Aubert YP28c was a key player in midfield.
Cyrille Rostand YP33g was the youth player to make the move to first team.
We had no decent players left for the chairman to sell, but the top prospect from last years' poor youth intake was poached for compensation only.

Good job @Diego D10S. Shame about the hit to the finances of those two transfers your chairman brought in.

2041/42 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 2
The League
After ten seasons in Ligue 2 and two attempts at promotion playoffs, we successfully avoided them by going up in style with a league title. The last three season have seen great success, mostly on the back of goals from Bryan Pham Ba YP39a. This promotion never would have happened if he'd accepted the offer from Milan on deadline day of the transfer window. The margin of victory was comfortable, but could have been huge if we didn't lose to Montpellier in the third to last game of the season.
In the cup we had our first win against a Ligue 1 team, beating FC Metz 2-1 away in the 10th round. We did lose 0-3 to Olympique de Marseille in the 11th round. But them and PSG are currently the two big teams in France in my game.
If we are to survive next season, we will be looking for a few more scalps at FC Metz's level.
The Players
Bryan Pham Ba YP39a continues to go from strength to strength. He was the Ligue 2 top scorer for the third consecutive season and also won the Ligue 2 player of the season. He won the European under 19s championship with France and also picked up the top scorer award in that event with 6 goals. It will be interesting to see how far he can go in Ligue 1 and how long he will stay with us. He has two years left on contract and is not prepared to sign an extension at present. Hopefully that changes if we can stay in Ligue 1.
Boris Amblard YP36b once again had a great season with 11 goals and 17 assists to be a key contributor to our success.
Baba Fall YP42a is the best of this year's youth intake and looks like a great replacement for Bour.
Our goalkeeper Fabien Dumont is also a key player. He only has one year left on his contract and will not negotiate a new one. We have no adequate backup, so this could be a real problem going forward.
Transfers
The chairman sold Bour and Simon against my wishes. But at least we managed to keep hold of Bryan Pham Ba who really is the star of our team.
