2051/52 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 1
Part 1 of the challenge complete. At the halfway stage Marseille had an eight point lead over PSG and we were a further two points back. Marseiile had a dramatic collapse in the second half of the season to drop to second place. PSG's collapse was just as dramatic, with perhaps greater consequences, as they failed to qualify for the Champions Cup.
Bryan Pham Ba YP39a was top scorer in Ligue 1 and 1st equal for the most man of the match awards. When he is in form, Annecy are in form.
Andreas Boeckl seems to have started his decline. At 34yrs old, he was only only 3rd top scorer in Ligue 1 and failed to win a 12th straight World Player of the Year award, coming runner up to his teammate Eddy Marchetti.
Rennes won the Euro Cup, giving France 5 teams in the Champions Cup next season. Nice won the French Cup to qualify for the Euro Cup.
Bryan Pham Ba YP39a had his most successful season to date. Top scoring in Ligue 1 and leading us to a title.
Ahmet Cinar YP46a is really coming of age, playing anywhere on the right side of the field.
We have a good first team now, but many of them are in their late 20s. After several poor youth intakes there is not much of a succession plan. We really need a decent intake. I'm thinking of changing my HOYD again.

I want to know how that game went
Completely outplayed, but only damaged our goal difference by 2.
We had a semi injured Magne back playing as one centre back, our reserve DM playing as the other. Our second choice left wing playing as a left back and a kid playing right back.

2050/51 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 1
With the combination of deep Cup and European runs, our small squad of effectively 16 first team players suffered a lot. With a lot of injuries and suspensions, it was often a case of playing whoever was fit (and not in a nightclub) on game day. Results suffered and we eventually sank to 17th.
LOSC were leading for most of the season and hopes were high that the PSG/Marseille dominance would be broken. Unfortunately they only had one draw from their last five games and it was business as usual for Marseille.
Marseille did a quadruple of winning the League, Cup, Champions Cup and Trophee de Champions titles. Andreas Boeckl top scored again with 31 and won his 11th consecutive World Player of the Year award. He is 33, so speculation is rife about who his successor might be.
We had a real adventure in our first dip into the Champions Cup. Napoli dominated our group with 6 wins from 6. We managed a win and a draw against LASK (who failed to score a single goal), plus a fantastic 2-1 come-from-behind victory at home to Real Madrid to finish 3rd in the group and get a chance in the Europa Cup.
We had a good run in the Europa Cup, reaching the semifinals with home advantage playing a big role. Chelsea eventually knocked us out 2-3 on aggregate (1-2a, 1-1h). The went on to beat fellow French team LOSC in the final.
Bryan Pham Ba had a slow season by his standards. He still top scored with 24 games, but this was from 56 games instead of the usual 40-odd.
Mehdi Slimani YP43b had the highest rating in the team.
Screve Makengo YP48a is the latest wonderkid to make the first team after successful loan spells with CS Sedan Ardennes and US Créteil-Lusitanos.
Our youth intake was the poorest of many seasons. I doubt any of the 'class of 51' will make the first team, but maybe I can sell them for a bit.

Also, send him on a leadership course. On the other hand,, it probably won't work, and it might increase his influence to the point that he turns everybody into a party animal. However, I'm not at all sure that a leadership course just improves that one attribute. It's made negligible changes to leadership for my players.
Do people think that leadership courses would be a good idea for Benjamin 'Bender' Bernard?
(I want to make clear that 'bender' is an idiom for a pub crawl, rather than alluding to his personal preferences).
Aww man. Thanks for the suggestions. But you're only making me want to go out on the town with him. In fact, team building night out at his favourite club!
First round's on me.

I mean, he is decent for me, but there seems to be a clear lack of centrebacks in England for him to get a call up for the U20s.
Do you have just Norway loaded?
I find that countries other than the ones you have loaded always have a lack of depth. Especially at youth level.0 -

Seven times out at a nightclub now.
I keep fining him, but several members of the team are complaining about him and annoyed at me for not doing anything about it.
I then warned him about his conduct and now he's annoyed at me too. I really don't want to get rid of such a quality player. Especially since we're on the verge of becoming a regular in European competitions.

2049/50 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 1
We had a fantastic first half to the season and were in 2nd place at the halfway stage. Partly due to traditional contenders PSG, OGC Nice and Lyon having bad starts and partly due to fixing our weak keeper and leaky defence situation. We didn't quite do as well in the second half of the season, but managed to hold on for the 4th Champions Cup spot. Nice missed out on Europe completely and Lyon almost got relegated. Marseille won the league easily and Andreas Boeckl picked up a 10th straight World Player of the Year award, effectively killing off the Messi vs Ronaldo debate.
Our new stadium was completed just before the start of the season. Attendances and gate takings have gone through the roof. First home game, my gate takings record went from 450k to 750k.
Youth facilities are back to state of the art.
Club stalwart, Jonathan Marques YP31e is retiring. The versatile defender played 536 games (479 league games) for us at left back or centre back. He spent a lengthy period as vice captain and his last two seasons as captain, albeit in sporadic appearances from the bench. He won two Ligue 2 titles.
Benjamin Bernard YP45a won the European Golden Boy award and the Annecy FC 'Bad Boy' award. He missed 6 games after being seen out at nightclubs and also started missing training sessions after signing his bumper contract. I can't get rid of him as him and Pham Ba are my only two decent strikers. I guess I get a lot of his wages back from fines.
Steve Tossavi YP47a looks to be a significant upgrade on our old keeper, which means we also have a better backup as well. Tossavi spent two seasons out on loan, but now looks to have come of age.
Ahmet Cinar YP46a was another huge contribution to our success. With a quality right back, right wing and someone who can play either, we have a lot of versatility and cover on the right side of the field.
Nothing major. All my first team players are now willing to sign long contract extensions, even if they are for large wages. A barrier has been broken.

Do u play instant result ? I play the league games and cup games on 2d of 3d (key) and use instant result for the friendly games. we have a many friendlies in Iceland .
I'm playing this save on commentary only and very rarely make changes in the first half. My Ass Man takes care of the friendlies.

Btw, how are on earth have you made it to 2050 in your game so quick??
A lot of leave my boss forced me to take at the end of the year. Getting through a season a day, but it will slow down from Monday.

I'll probably get sacked pretty quickly though, so I'm not getting my hopes up
Getting sacked is a badge of honour in this challenge!

One of my strikers has missed 3 of the first 8 games of the season due to being out at a nightclub the night before. Three separate occasions.
He has been fined all three times. His personality is 'realist'.
It started happening after I got him to sign a lucrative new contract. Too much disposable income now.
Trying to work out how to prevent it happening again.

2048/49 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 1
This was a strange season. We were stretched a bit with a small squad dealing with European games as well as domestic. In the league, only Marseille scored more goals than us, so I was very happy with our attack. But we also conceded the most goals with the same defence and keeper who have done well in the past few seasons. This ended up giving us a 14th place finish. We had a good win each against PSG and Lyon along the way, plus a draw and huge loss to Marseille.
In the Euro Cup II, we made the final fairly easily, then lost 0-3 to Inter in the final. It looks like they were the only decent team in the competition. They won every game quite convincingly, so I guess we were a bit lucky not to meet them until the final.
Bryan Pham Ba YP39a had another great scoring season with 43 goals. 13 against some fairly average Euro Cup II teams. He was the second highest scorer in Ligue 1 with 30 goals, behind 8 time World POTY, Andreas Boeckl (37) of Olympique Marseille.
Florian Dupuis YP41d won the Annecy Young Player of the Year award and contributed 14 goals and 14 assists as an AM.
Florent Janin YP49a was the best of another poor youth intake.
With our state of the art facilities, we should be producing better youth players. After four seasons and four poor intakes I have replaced my 'Model Citizen' HOYD with poor attributes, with the 'Balanced' Victor Bouchité who as much better attributes.
A quiet season from my transfer department.

@XaW do many of your youth intake come in at 17?
Mine come in at 15/16 and in Hong Kong, they even came in and could play at 14.What influence do you have at your club that could have brought a Kosovo player through?
Or was it just a random chance? My HOYD is Senegalese and I am getting one Senegalese player through per intake, plus usually another player with an African second nationality (Cameroon, Ghana, Congo, etc)

I sent one of my highly rated 16 yr olds out on loan for a season. His personality was 'fickle' when he went out. He came back one season later with a personality of 'fairly ambitious'.
Anyone know what factors may have gone into changing that?

My players are just bad enough to avoid any interest from bigger clubs.
This!!!
I think there is a sweet spot where you can develop players that are good enough to compete and stay with your team long term, but not good enough that the big teams are constantly poaching them.
These are the players I want in my youth intake.
The wonderkids can wait until we are good enough that they want to stay.

2047/48 Annecy FC season review - French Ligue 1
This was an exciting run in to the end of the season. Over the last few rounds, the teams from 5th to 9th were swapping places regularly. We had a great opportunity to qualify for the Euro Cup.
In the final game, with time running down, we were drawing 1-1 with Bordeaux and Lyon were winning 1-0 over Marseille, leaving us in 8th place on the live table. The game ended and I was disappointed to miss out on a European spot, but then on the results page I saw that Marseille scored a 93rd minute equalizer against Lyon which bumped us up to 7th and a Euro Cup II place.
Club Legend Julien Aubert YP28c is retiring after spending 20 seasons in the first team. Aubert is our leading appearance holder with 563 league appearances across four divisions and 624 appearances overall. He was regualarly in our team of the year and was club captain from 2041-8.
His highlights include winning the Ligue 2 most assists award in 2041 and the Ligue 2 player of the season in 2042. He is now on a coaching course and will hopefully join the backroom staff.
Benjamin Bernard YP45a made the step up to a first team regular this season and contibuted 14 goals.
Screve Makengo YP48a looks a decent prospect from this years' youth intake. The rest look average at best.
The two players on the left were brought in by the new board as part of a takeover (screenshots in earlier post). As can be seen on the right, Sedney was sold 7 days after coming in, Shearer 16 days after coming in. Both at a small loss and without playing a game.

@Fastbasher Does your HoYD have any redeeming qualities, apart from the personality?
All this discussion of the ideal HoYD, but is anybody getting great players season after season without fail?
Does anybody think they have a 'perfect' HoYD or a perfect youth staff team? If so, tell me about it?
My HOYDs ability scores are not good at all, but he was the only 'model citizen' I could find. Three seasons with poor intakes now.
The intakes with my professional, spirited and balanced HOYDs with good ability scores seemed a lot better.

After 1015hrs of play on FM20, I finally got the steam achievement of buying a player. Funny thing is, I didn't even buy one. It was the chairman.

So, if I read Darren's post correctly, you don't have to take the hit of releasing them on a free immediately.
It's possible, if not probable though that nobody will bid for them straight away, because they've only just joined your club.
@darren1983 Would not using them just mean as players, or not using them for training groups / mentoring either?
I managed to sell them both within 16 days for a combined loss of only 3m pounds. No games played.
Many of my players are now upset at me for selling two key players in our team.

I don't know about the first question. I have a feeling someone else may have won one already.
Pham Ba is 29, turning 30 in March. He went into the first team at 16 due to being so much better than the rest early on. I guess the club stature rose at the right pace for him to stay with us as he developed.
He has 471 league appearance and 305 league goals. 542 appearance and 365 goals in all competitive matches.
Interestingly, the highest level of international play he reached was French U20s. I guess he was just under that level that the top teams wanted him.
Also, looking at his attributes, I think Benjamin Bernard is a better striker, but Pham Ba consistently performs better.
Finances have not been an issue for a long time. Currently have 134m gbp in the bank and a transfer budget of 220m gbp. The balance did top 160m at one point, but we've just paid tax, directors payout and a for a stadium expansion.
One huge change was when my chairman stopped selling out best players. We've not had a current player from our team called up to French senior squad yet. But there are usually 3-6 of our former players in the squad, which is a little bit frustrating.
