Also pretty epic. https://twitter.com/dsantana310/status/910234624277741570/video/1 In football (the real one ;) ) it'd the type who would rant about a lack of passion and grit and determination as the root cause of all failings for the English National Football Team since Sir Alf's Wingless Wonders '66.  :D In the current climate those blokes still find an audience as there is an inherently mistrust (nothing bad about that, a blind belief in purely stats is never a good thing), a desire to keep things as they've always been. And because useful metrics in particular as to football have only entered the arena in more recent times. In a few years from now they will be everbody's laughing stock though and be forced to play Football Manager to stay into a (fictional) spotlight -- where they can still hold onto the good old times and log onto Miles Twitter to flame him with their opinions how the game were broken as their forward should have clearly scored at least 8 out of the 10 one on ones he just had, because that's just his football he's known for fifty years, ya know!

Btw, the game is entirely maths and quants anyhow, so the designer's better go by some analytics, or else they create a complete fantasy. :D [Ok, that's basically been 3 more posts on that topic of lacking in-game stats/feedback, but this will be my last, promise]. :)

Hi Svenc, agree and disagree at the same time ;)

Advanced stats and metrics will be more and more useful in football, but I don't think they'll ever have the same impact they have in baseball, basketball or american football (seriously why they call that football when the only players that actually kick the ball are the less relevant on the team...) mostly for one reason: it's played with feet. This means football tends to be much less predictable - unlike other sports a lot of the key plays that happen on a football pitch are actually results of individual mistakes - which makes it harder to draw consistent, statistical conclusions. Analytics and metrics have completely reshaped NBA basketball, teams trying to play 'winning' basketball put huge emphasis on three point shooting and tend to push the tempo; as a result post play is now a lost art while mid-range shooting (the 'long 2') is seen as the devil. I doubt we'll ever see something like this happening in football.

Number can also be read from different angles... for example I'm pretty sure that teams that have more total shots tend to be the ones that get more goals (small sample from 2016/17 Bundesliga https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/81/Tournaments/3/Seasons/6392/Stages/13872/TeamStatistics/Germany-Bundesliga-2016-2017 ) so this could somehow support the infamous 'I got Fm'd' theory .

I do agree that stats and analytics should have more relevance in FM as they're basically the tools that we can/must use to understand and interact with the game. I swear when I'm winning 4-0 and my AM comes up with the typical 'seriously overrun in midfield' advice I would fire the guy in the middle of the game!

  2. I know it wasn't particularly Messi-ish but have you considered  the 'Likes to try to beat offside trap' trait for the SS? I have a (sub-par)  striker with that trait and he's shown some promise in this set-up as the SS, still coming quite deep but also making himself available for some clear chances (mosty missed ofc) and winning a couple of penalties + red card after beating the line. Maybe something to test more consistently for further penetration.

Absolutely love this thread and the idea behind it, I feel this tactical set-up will work great against opponents that close down and don't park the bus while from very brief experience I'm foreseeing issues against disciplined teams parking the bus and standing off, of course that's where you should expect a bit of magic from your gifted attackers - which I don't really have at this point, I'm rocking Jerry Mbakogu and Kevin Lasagna as  Neymar and Dybala

    Fantastic read!

    Thank you.

Yes, for the OFC Champions League qualification, I I have not checked. If it don't work, I will rebuild the OFC Champions League in the same way that the original,  like the last year. ;)

ran a test and it seems that after first season Auckland City and Team Wellington always qualify for OFC champions league even when they shouldn't so I think the issue with OFC CL is still there, hopefully you can fix it at some point like you did last year :)

Game crashed on me last night and I lost the whole of the close season including the New Stadium and the great deal for  (20e) Sölvi Sigur (Casual) * .

    Gutted. :(

I feel your pain mate! Hopefully you'll find the motivation to go on. Enough with the sadness, a very kind user here - @Trainspotting90- made a provisional FM 17 version of debski's hair pack. It doesn't feature beards at the moment as they don't currently work with new faces, but it's an improvement to default hair for sure. Find it here http://www93.zippyshare.com/v/0JpbqQ5h/file.html

I need that Debski newgen hair/face thing again. Does anyone know if it is being done again and if so where I get it from?

No news about it. It's usually shared on fmscout when it's out, same for OLT hair pack (also excellent). I'd use past versions but with new faces most beards and moustaches are messed up so can't be used. I feel we need those hair packs more than ever as not only current hair styles are dreadful (as usual) but regen faces look all the same... don't feel like starting a long term save atm...

Btw great story so far, keep us updated about GK scoring goals ;)

  6. Powerful claassen!

A request when or if you have time in the future. A few of the brazilian state championships made by SI have the wrong format; now I'm mainly interested on Piaui state championship (currently lacks home and away format for semifinals and final in both 1st and 2nd stage) as I'd like to start a save with River in Piaui. Would it be possible for you to fix that particular league (and maybe in a far future every brazilian state championship)?

Thanks for your excellent work every year, makes the game much more enjoyable!

Does anyone else have a problem with regen faces being sort of the same? Just had my first intake and every single one of them is a white guy with the same facial features but a different hairstyle. I mean look at this

These are all the same guy aren't they? Not to mention none of them look 16, more like 10 mugshots of a 35 year old criminal offender.

yes, I felt the same even with mixed race or black brazilians... mine also had similar (and very ugly) hairstyles to make it even creepier.

btw hairstyles are still so ugly... looking forward to some custom hair pack.

As you say, two tactics (especially if there's a number of differences between them) and new players which take it's toll on learning tactics. Just to clarify, 'Tactical' training works on tactical/mental attributes rather than tactics training. Only the pre-match 'match training' of Tactics works on the tactics you employ in match ad the familiarity the players have to it.

yeah I meant 'match training' set to 'more match training', plus very heavy intensity level of general training. Seems to take much longer than past editions of the game to learn tactics at accomplished/fluid level.

  9. 5 minutes ago, Neil Brock said:

How many tactics are you trying to 'learn' at once?

Admittedly I have two tactics in two slots (same formation but different mentality and settings: your typical home and away variation), and I also signed some new players but 40+ days on very heavy workload all focused on match tactics, a full pre-season-camp and 12 friendlies should probably pay more dividends? Most bars have just become 'competent' and the team is actually showing progress on the pitch (won first two league matches yay), but after such an intensive pre-season I was expecting somewhere between 'accomplished' and 'fluid'...

  10. Season update from Glauber Daniel:

    MEnaOZp.png

15 goals in 79 matches, not bad despite a pedestrian 13/20 on penalties and only 2 goals from free kicks. Glauber is nowe learning the 'Hits free kicks with power' PPM, hopefully this will help a bit, though I'm afraid FM16 isn't really free kicks friendly in any case...

    All time stats:

    LC6y2Y9.png

35 goals in 177 appearances (29 penalties and 6 free kicks) for 20 years old Glauber, could have been better but all in all I'm happy with this tally!

  11. Just for the record, (in case nobody has seen me discuss this), I think the reason for goal-scoring GK's out-scoring better qualified outfield players, (especially when it comes to free-kicks), is an error with regards to where the match engine extracts the GK abilities from with the game.

    What I mean is this.

When an outfield player has a direct free-kick opportunity, the game recognises that it is a free-kick and it takes the free kick attribute, (one of the important factors when determining the outcome of the free-kick), from the free-kick attribute line in his profile, (or wherever that his hidden under the bonnet of the game). This "free kick taking attribute" is the 6th attribute down on the list of technical attributes. That all seems pretty straightforward and sensible I think you would agree.

The problem is that when it comes to GK's finding themselves in the same position and taking free-kicks, the 6th attribute down on the list of technical attributes isn't "free kick taking" at all. It's in fact "Handling". Now as you all know, handling is one of the key attributes for a GK. My personal opinion is that the game is extracting the GK's handling attribute and using it instead of his free-kick attribute.

It doesn't stop there though. While free-kick taking might be important in the taking of a free kick, it's not the be all and end all. What about technique?

Well technique is at the very bottom of the list of technical attributes for an outfield player, but for a GK, this spot is actually taken by "throwing", which again might be considered quite a key attribute for a GK.

Lastly, we might add, "long shots" into the mix and looking at that, that's 8 down on the list of technical attributes for an outfield player and it's place is taken by "one on one's" by a GK.

Some might argue that "finishing" might have an impact on free-kick taking, (I don't agree), but if you do, then this apace is taken up by "eccentricity" on a GK.

I've got absolutely no doubt that composure is a key attribute either way.

So basically, rather than a GK with a good free-kick or penalty attributes, what I think you are actually looking for is the following.

    1. A good GK who will play every game for you.

    2. A young GK who will be around for a while.

    3. A player with enough PA to allow for significant growth.

    4. Depending on what club you are at, ambition is a bad thing because it may encourage him to want to move on to bigger and better things. Professionalism all the way.

    5. A high "Handling" attribute.

    6. A high "Throwing" attribute.

    7. A high "One on one's" attribute.

    8. A high "composure" attribute.

    9. Someone who doesn't often get injured.

I think that's just about it.

this is very interesting and a bit heart-breaking for Glauber ;)

It does make some sense, my keeper doesn't score a lot from FK (say 5-6 in 100 matches) but I regularly had outfield 'specialists' that scored 0 in 5 years. Free kicks seem a bit broken in FM 16, sometimes it feels some players just have 'it' and can score those FK's regardless of attributes. In my FM 16 careers I've had only two players that seemed capable of scoring free kicks (except goalkeepers): Giovinco from Toronto FC and Ramon (Brazilian striker), that scored 3-4 per season. It would be interesting to have SI games insight, maybe post this in the ask SI thread?

FK attribute of 15 might sill be useful as it gives players the chance to learn 'hits free kicks with power' PPM (while 'attempts long range FK' is apparently impossible to learm, tried countless times...), not sure if it's a helpful PPM though...

  12. End of season and career update for Glauber Daniel:

    3VQQ4fA.png

78 total appearances and 17 goals (14 penalties and 3 free kicks). A very good 14/16 on penalties for Glauber, and some promising FK skills (scored only 3 but had a few shots hit the post/crossbar or saved). Scoring around 12-15 goals in 70-75 matches would be a decent result, hopefully he can become a more deadly FK taker in time.

    All time stats:

    kEGabU6.png

    20 goals in 98 matches - 16 penalties and 4 free kicks
