  1. Glauber Daniel does it again with another hat-trick, courtesy of three penalties earned by his teammates:

After the first half of the season (full Gaucho regional championship and early rounds of Copa Libertadores) Glauber has an excellent return of 10 goals in 25 matches - 8 penalties and 2 free kicks - plus 4 assists.

Good news is Glauber has been an accurate PK taker (8 for 9 from the spot) and quite a successful FK taker (2 goals is not amazing but better than the usual 0 recorded by my previous 'specialists'), also hitting the bar from free kick on a couple of occasions. Consistent first team action is also helping Glauber's development as he improves most of his skills and attributes. Also there are still plenty of games in the season: the whole national league (38 games) plus all the games I can earn from Brazilian Cup, Copa Libertadores and possibly Club World Cup. Bad news is the level of competition will be much higher than Gaucho state championship, hopefully my attackers can keep stealing penalties at healthy rate!

  2. wow he looks good!

Good to see someone picking this up again. It's been a bit quiet in here!

I have just finished off the 2047-48 season, and Canini has now got 151 goals at 33 years of age.

If I use him regularly, he may play until he is 40, which gives him 7 years-ish.

Scoring at an average of 6 a season (to be on the safe side) he could get 42, which puts him on 193, just shy of 200.

I don't know how to generate more opportunities, so we will just have to see how he goes!

Does anyone know the oldest a player has played in the game before retiring?I'm hoping he will play into his 40s if possible, as long as I keep using him and he gets good ratings due to scoring occasionally.

I have the old Julio Cesar (former brazilian international GK) as a mentor for youngsters and he'll retire at 42 at the end of the season, he never plays though. If you keep playing him and renewing his contract, I guess Canini could still go on for a few years. Also I think a player never retires before the end of his contract so if you can give him a long 5-years contract he might announce retirement but still keep playing until his contract is over.

  3. Finally got my long term candidate for this challenge... and it's a 4.5 star rated young keeper from our very own academy: Glauber Daniel is still a teenager but after a year between the youth squad and senior team (already scored 3 goals in 15 senior appearances last year) he will start as first choice this year for my Juventude team - it helps that in the brazilian regional championship some teams are absolutely rubbish.

    ks6Udqu.png

And Glauber scored a hat-trick in his first game of the season! 2 penalties and 1 free kick, and 2 assists too (for the record it was a 15-0 bashing of a fourth division club, still an official league match though ...). Hopefully he can take advantage of those garbage teams as our skilled attackers steal penalties for him...

With attributes of 14 for free kicks (hope to get him to 15 so he can learn the 'hit FK with power' PPM) and 11 for penalties, and having just turned 18, Glauber could become a serious threat for this challenge... though Barcelona and Real Madrid have already shown interest in him!

  4. having followed this thread for a while I finally started a fresh brazilian save to join the challenge. Took over Juventude in the third division and signed the sexy André Zuba as my scoring keeper.

André is a good keeper for this standard of football, but most of all has exceptional attributes for penalties and free kicks. Completed first season with a decent 7 goals in 47 matches, going 5/5 from penalty spot and converting two direct free kicks, scoring in three different competitions. He also added 5 assists. Not the greatest numbers I reckon, but a decent start of a long challenge. In my plans André will be the perfect mentor for my 'real' scoring GK of the future - whoever he will be. He has already learned the 'Shoots free kicks with power' PPM and I'm trying to teach him the 'long range free kicks' move too. Hopefully he can score more goals in the next few years before passing his goal scoring skills to the next keeper... beating Abazi's record seems absolutely impossible though!

  5. It really was a long way out, he absolutely smashes them! He had the PPM when he came through the intake, didnt realise for a while as i dont normally look at keeper ppms.

This is on FM16 and he is my best prospect, never had a keeper like it (goalscoring ability) so im quite excited. He has 15 free kicks, 12 pens, 10 tekkers. Hes been on pens but didnt get any in those first 11 games. Hes scored 2 so far in my current season.

Spartans are a Scottish team IRL in the Lowlands league. Im doing the youth challenge with them :)

I only recently discovered that only players with 15 or above for FK can learn that PPM. Coupled with the 'attempts long range free kicks' PPM could be even more effective!

  6. Sinkalan you're doing amazing with your GK. I'm waiting for 16.3 to get back to my Red Bull Brasil save (I might have found an unlikely south african regen candidate as my scoring GK...) and yeah Brazil is a very good fit for this challenge, with over 70 games each season between regional championship, national championship, local cup and continental cups!

  7. Amazing Jimbo!

Unfortunately my own teenage GK has missed three penalties in three attempts between official matches and friendlies :(

But he can now do this http://imgur.com/rmdhup0 and has scored two DFK in 5 games in the U20 league since then... I think that PPM could really make some difference, though I think it can be taught to a GK only if he has an attribute of 15 or higher for FK - like Silvio!

  8. Something wrong with DFK definitely, though I'm sure there are players who can consistently score from DFK in FM. The most frustrating thing is that we don't have the tools to identify bona fide free kicks specialists, as clearly the 'free kicks' attributes alone doesn't make much difference. Maybe we could identify a few effective FK takers in the game and check them in the editor to see if there's a pattern (might be hidden attributes I don't know).

  9. In 8 seasons I have scored from 1 DFK on FM16 so Im not sure it matters at all. I feel far more uncomfortable with my GK 70 yards away from where he should be

Seems to me there are players who can score from DFK and others who just cannot, and it's not necessarily related to the specific attribute. In FM16 only Giovinco has been prolific from DFK for me, he does have a 16 for free kicks I think, though I've used many players with higher FK attributes who could spend years without scoring a single goal.

The 'shoots free kicks with power' PPM seems to help a bit, unfortunately GK's can't be trained to learn that (they can learn to attempt long range free kicks though). Right now my regular penalty kick takers are also missing lots of penalties (like four in a row), might as well have my GK missing them...

EDIT: keepers can actually learn the 'shoots free kicks with power' PPM, and my regular outfield penalty takers with 15+ attribute have missed 6 of last 7 penalties...

  10. I tend to not worry to much about GK attributes for pens and free-kicks. The system is pretty flawed anyway.but my teenage GK has scored more free-kicks than outfield players with FAR better attributes. No idea why,

yeah reading about your past experiences I figured this was the case. Have you found other attributes to be more decisive for PK or FK? Maybe composure or decisions or flair? For some reason I'd still be a bit uncomfortable having a keeper taking penalties with a attribute of 1 hahaha

  11. Has the "Free Kick Taking" attribute been removed from Goalkeepers in FM16? I can't seem to see it on any attribute pages for GKs. Is it now taken into account as part of "Kicking"?

you can also find it in the 'profile' page.

btw, I can't seem to find regen keepers with decent penalties attributes, I see lots of great FK rating (around 15) no luck with the PK though. I want to join this challenge badly but waiting for the perfect candidate to pop up and dominate scoring charts for 20 years :)

  12. Found about this corner kick routine via Strikerless.com (all credit to original author THEFMVETERAN) http://linkis.com/wordpress.com/1tHg8

basically it is built to provide long shots chances for a player lurking outside the area, with several other players staying back. Haven't tried this yet, but looks very interesting and maybe could be a good option for goalscoring keepers, giving them consistent shooting opportunities from corner kicks while providing decent cover at the back.

    feel free to try :)

  13. It would seem rude not to.

This is a pretty poor goal for the GK to concede and it got me wondering as to why GK's seem more able to score than outfield players when you look at their abilities at actually taking the free-kicks. My first impression, (and long-held view), is that opposition GK's are caught off guard by an opposition GK taking the free-kicks and this affects their ability to save them. This doesn't explain though why a GK can dispatch one with pin-point accuracy into the top corner, where as an outfield player with better attributes can't.

Something that this particular goal reminded me of however is that it creates an extra man and forces the AI to defend differently than would usually be the case. What I mean is that we are set up in the following way.

We have 2 players back, (marking 1 opposition attacker).

We have 1 man lurking, (marked by 1 opposition player).

We have 1 player who should be standing with taker, (I think), but is a little deeper, (and he has attracted the attention of a 2nd attacker who might otherwise be up against one of my 2 defenders).

We have 6 player in the box, (marked by 5 players).

Then we have the GK himself taking the free-kick.

Because we have 6 attackers in the box, the GK has opted to have only a 2-man wall. He would probably had 3 here with another taker, and possibly even 4, but by committing so many players forward, (and by the GK creating an extra man), it means that he can't really have more than 2 without causing the team problems in other areas. That allows the GK to get the ball past the wall with power, when it might not have been possible with a 3rd or even 4th man in the wall.

From the defending GK's point of view, the wall is covering the left hand side of the goal as we look, (except it isn't because there are only 2 men in the wall), and the GK himself is covering the right hand side of the goal as we look. Although the shot goes in centrally and of course the GK should save it, I wonder if this is having an impact on AI GK decision making.

Thoughts from anyone else who has scored GK free-kicks in FM16?

This is very interesting and will definitely pay more attention to this once I find a decent GK/FK taker. There are a few possible transfer targets but most of them are quite old (Lucchetti, Saja and Campagnaro come to mind), I want a 16 years old regen to feel more of a connection with the player - and to have a chance to beat your record of course :)

One thing I noticed is the keepers shown here seem to have below averages attributes for free kicks (and even worse for PK) and yet they seem to be very prolific, so I guess my question is couldn't you find a GK with higher specific attributes and be even more successful? and now I wonder if those attributes even make that much of a difference???

I'm having a hard time scoring free kicks even with outfield players in FM16 (Giovinco of Toronto FC is the only one that showed consistency, i.e. a couple of FK goals per season) maybe the GK is the key...

  14. I will definitely join this challenge at some point (probably after final patch), I think my Red Bull Brasil save will be perfect long term, as Brazilian leagues are famous for eccentric goalkeepers and for having one million games each season! Seems like a perfect combination, though it will be very hard to come close to some results I've seen here.

Maybe if I could make my keeper do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhmLE5bejKk

  15. Hey Cleon,

Great thread; thank you for the advice. On tutoring - does tuturing improve Determination and Leadership? Daniele De Rossi has just become available and I am thinking about getting him to tutor Aaron Ramsey as De Rossi has the higher reputation..

    Thanks again.

it does improve determination and personality, not sure about leadership though. De Rossi has excellent determination and personality if I'm not mistaken, so he'd be a good choice as a mentor. Be careful to the preferred moves though as he may pass his own PPM's during the tutoring so make sure they're desirable for your style and tactic (e.g. de rossi might have 'shoots from distance' PPM)

  16. Shame that they are so broken. In the late 2020s my board isn't able to find a feeder anywhere, ever... Nor link up with the clubs I point them to...

You were right about my asthmatic guy, by the way. 50 games a season for two years, and he's way past of what that-software-thing predicted he'd ever be. :-)

I think for San marino things work a bit differently. In year 2019 I have extensive youth recruitment, worldwide reputation and tons of foreign feeder clubs and foreign staff but regens are always only sammarinese and/or italian. And it's been the same at least since FM10. I'm pretty sure it's coded this way.

  17. It's always a pleasure to see this thread. Top quality stuff!

I find it very inspiring as I'm a huge fan of the Ajax model IRL, and in FM as well as they're the example I always try to follow with my San Marino challenge. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this piece, especially the attention to apparently minor things like coaches personality and youth coaches tendencies.

One thing I'd like to see improved in FM is a stronger emphasis on youth development, and in particular a bigger control on what happens 'behind' the youth setup - e.g. type of players recruited/produced by the youth academy, with positions, attributes and PPM's directly linked to type of youth coaches and to club philosophy.
