yup you guys are on the right track with this. FM jumped the gun here .  Certain parts of it aren’t even finalised yet and there had never been a clear explanation regarding what nations and how many caps etc are actually needed.

I posted this in the work permit thread

The real life process won’t cause that much of an issue. Looks like a 15 point rule has been agreed by PL and FA and that is yet to be voted on by clubs anyway but my guess is it’ll get even lower.

The problem is FM is not capable of processing the work permit requirements information.
I’ve had saves before where I’ve had players fail work permits even though they’re full internationals Who play regularly because when the game starts you start with no international appearances for that season.

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8942921/amp/The-FA-win-post-Brexit-war-against-Premier-League-overseas-talent-new-15-point-system.html

that article explains it more but basically fm will not be capable of applying the measures that are there in real life. For example the appeal system. This will basically make playing in England outside the Premier League in Fm borderline unplayable and impossible for potentially rising up the ladder.
SI are going to have to have a workaround put in the coding or something to negate this.

I have doubts about this new Brexit tbh. This is not going to be sustainable for long saves as many teams will struggle to find international players to sign. The quality and competitiveness of Championship in particular will significanlty drop. Hope some middle ground might be found.

I’m incredibly disappointed with the representation of the scottish league in the beta of fm21. Players in the scottish league transfer prices are ridiculously low in comparison to other leagues. E.g. Alfredo morelos who got 25+ goals last season for rangers transfer price is £13.25m whereas Sebastien baller who scored 7 goals in all competitions transfer price is £26m for a West Ham team that finished 16th in the league. Aswell as this players in Scotland’s CA & PA are incredibly low and don’t represent the players actual abilities which makes it clear that scouting or watching of scottish teams is very low. Feel that all of these need addressed in time for full game release because it’s a joke that championship players have better ratings and prices than rangers who this season are unbeaten in 20 games, in the Europa league and when you look at last seasons record aswell.

Erm, surely you know things like wages are taken into account with a players overall value. Hallers wages dwarf hat of Morelos. Also If Morelos left Rangers it wouldn’t be for more than 25 million because scoring in Scotland doesn’t really count to be honest.

Also you are hilariously over rating Scottish football and Rangers performances. Rangers were average last season domestically. In Europe they beat giants such as .... Braga. Getting to the last 16 of the Europa league is hardly cause for a mass uplift in players attributes. Didn’t Celtic lose comprehensively to Slavia Prague and Copenhagen? Should those teams now get massive upgrades and higher valued players?

  4. Yeah that tactic is insane, way too much going on , too many  positionally reckless roles. Can not get away with that with teams outside the elite or when you’re not one of the strongest in the division. You need a total overhaul to survive in Prem.

It does make sense though that you’ve been playing with the top sides as three years to take Brentford up is pretty insane.

Yeah...match engine seems to be working on a "credit" system...If one team outshoots another by a good margin ( no matter the quality of shots),they will get a goal from set piece. So tactic that absorbs heavy pressure can't do well because they WILL concede from set piece.A point to be noted is that this works both ways...I have also got goals against AI just by applying heavy pressure and having no real chances...

Haha, since this message. It’s happened three times to me. Went with the bus park and bang set piece 1-0.

ive played united away three times in this game and been 5-0 5-0 and 4-0 down at half time with a different type of tactic in each game.

  6. Yah agree with the OP. Getting a result away from home to a big team is a mammoth task. I just try to keep the score down, 1-0 or 2-0 away losses I see as victories. Although I do usually play as teams from the Championship so I half expect it.

What I find odd and slightly annoying is how unbelievably **** and lacking composure your players become in these games. They get the ball and literally either freeze (stand on the ball and then wait to get tackled) or boot it out of play, it's really, really weird. I wish I could upload all the instances of this happening.  Any sort of composure goes out the window.

The way its gone for me is if I play an  ultra defensive/bus parking tactics I'll lose 2/3-0 but Ill have basically no attacks. If I try something in the middle or attacking I am more of a threat but I lose 5/6-0. The other thing is they tend to absolutely rip into you in the first half so my last idea was to park bus first half and then second half go for it more. Ended up losing 2-0 away to Chelsea but did miss a pen.

I also tried this thing where I had 5 players at the back and 5 in the defensive mid positions in the Chelsea game and they could not get through at all and resorted to long shots. And it was only 1-0 half time but the goal was completely absurd, they crossed the ball into the box and I had 7 players in the box they had one, and of course the Chelsea striker won the header and scored, it was completely ludicrous.

    Hello, SteveDavis85!

Let's take a look at your roles and duties. You are using two IF-su. That's fine in some cases, but it could be one-dimensional most of the time. As my poster above said, try a IF-at+WB-su pairing on one of the sides; RMD+WB-su/FB-su could also work well if you want to increase the goal-scoring focus. On the other side you could use a WB-at+IF-su pairing in order to create dangerous overlaps.

One thing I noticed is that you use two Mezzalas. Usually Mezzalas attack the same space as IFs. They might help each other at times, but often they are going to impede each other. Alternatives could be AP-su (if you want to control the centre) or a CAR (as a balancing element for a WB-at or even CWB-at).

    Team Instructions

You ticked a lot of instructions. That's not always a bad thing, but in this case there are some contrary instructions that could lead to serious problems. For example, you are using a high line of engagement although you want your team to play passes into the space (but where is the space when your team is defending that high up the pitch?). Because you are mainly aiming for a possession-based tactical approach I would recommend the following changes:

    • remove Pass into Space (this instruction is rather made for counter-attacking sides or situations where your team's back is against the wall)
    • remove both Overlaps (if you use WBs and IFs you won't need this setting)
    • remove Play Wider (width is provided by your WB's and the narrower your team width the bigger are the half spaces for your IFs)
    • use Much Higher Line Defensive Line paired with High Line of Engagement; or:  Higher LOE + Default Defensive Line (this will give you vertical compactness and more passing options once you win the ball) (OPTIONAL)
    • remove Tighter Marking if your backline is rather slow (OPTIONAL)

Because you are already using counter-press there's not really a need for extremely urgent pressure. Rather go for more urgent or default pressure. (OPTIONAL)

I see people post a lot about removing ‘pass into space’ for attacking/possession tactics but I have to disagree with the removing pass into space option.

I think it’s a fantastic option if you’ve got pace and a good passer in your team.
Even if you are an attacking team with attacking tactics you will come under pressure in games. Your players won’t always look to pass into space and they won’t if you’ve got a team banked on the edge of their box. It is an option more than a go to.

It’s useful I think, in particular when you’re counter attacking from a corner. In my current tactic I leave my fastest player on stay forward and I’ve scored numerous goals breaking away because my players launch the ball into space from defending corners.

if you’ve got things like shorter passing and lower tempo on too I think it reduces the aggressiveness of it as well. It’s very very handy with fast wingers and with players moving into channels.

I don't think that of course, I play this game since championship manager 93 (yes I'm old, I know :P ).

I'm just telling you that everything was working pretty good (arrived 2nd in the league, expected 4th), but after the patch came out, my strikers died (oh and by the way I didn't change the tactic). I can't stand it, I mean it's so unrealistic.

    20200218204557_1.jpg

My take on it is that’s just how it goes. People are trying to pick apart the tactic but if it’s worked one season fine then there’s obviously not much wrong with it. Look, we know in this particular fm there are issues with the finishing of strikers and I think that’s just all this is down too. Strikers can be inconsistent in real life bar the top tier pool of strikers and I think the game just reflects that. I generally play lower league and my strikers are bonkers. One season they can hit 30 league goals, the next they’ll struggle to get half of that. It even happens during the season. So yeah, I think it’s just something to accept, use different strikers, get your midfielders shooting from distance more but I personally wouldn’t change the entire face of the tactic. Eventually your strikers will start scoring again.

I’ve personally tried to negate this by always playing two strikers and is say it’s worked. If one doesn’t score the other will. But that would obviously mean changing your system.

You were bang on about the AMC positions after experimenting pre-season, it just didn't work. I've done a lot of tinkering in the first few games and during pre-season. I began with an attacking mentality, as I wanted things fairly direct and high tempo combined with the high press. However, this lead to a total lack of space for my forwards and the only goals were coming from set pieces or scrappy goals forced by mistakes (although I'm happy to get goals this way, hence the high press, we need variety).

Anyway, I couldn't set the tactic up exactly as in real life (as the wide centre backs join attacks, making overloads on the flanks and passing triangles with the wing backs and wingers) but after experimentation I'm happy with the set up I've ended up with. It's been phenomenally effective defensively while also dominating possession and being very attacking. This while the players do not like me due to my unknown reputation, and the tactic still needing work familiarity wise due to my tinkering.  This is the tactic and my results so far, with the only goals I've conceded in 9 games both to a full strength Everton side (even then I had the most possession and gave them a good game):

    league-table.jpg

    tactic.jpg

Maguire is injured, but has 2 assists and 1 goal in 5 games, but is contributing plenty in terms of key passes. On the other hand, Gooch has been pretty much ineffective so far. No goals or assists and generally not being very involved (other than freeing up space for Denver Hume, who has 3 goals from LWB). I'm not sure whether it's his role that needs to be changed, or if I need to change the roles of other players (all of who are playing extremely well, so I'm reluctant).

Impressive defensively , quite an unusual set up but looking at it I can see why and how it would work.
How’s the extremely urgent pressing working? I’ve always been wary of using it as the players run around like headless chickens whenever I’ve tried.

as for Gooch as a IF, to be honest it’s a position I’ve never been able to have success in in FM. Gooch also is technically poor in the game. In my system he just plays a pure right winger and is brilliant. I would suggest playing him as a (Winger)on attack on that left wing position. For some reason it acts differently to IF for better.

  10. Follow up thread to ……………………..

After the match engine update and the improvement in full back decision making as well as defenders dealing with balls over the top a lot better and midfielders being more effective, the original tactic wasn't as effective so had to make a few alterations and the results were very good.

    Key changes

    - Shorter passing

    - Wide playmaker

    - Overlapping full back

    - I also set all my defenders individually to ease off tackles because the yellow and reds were a bit too much.

The formation going forward acts more like a lopsided 352 with the wide playmaker drifting centrally. Unlike the original there's a lot more midfield involvement in the build up. Lots of pretty patterns of play and a lot less direct and yet more goals being scored.
The changes between the away and home tactic is minor, A WB (a) instead of FB (a) and my defenders are not on stoppers for away games. And finally the CMR is on defence duty for away games and the CML on support. For home games CMR is on support, CML on box to box.

    LEAGUE TABLE

Playing as Sunderland, this was my second season and first in the championship, I actually scored more goals in the Championship than in League One and only got one less point, unfortunately West Ham and Brentford somehow conspired to get 100+ points and then of course I lost the playoffs... Has anyone ever won the playoffs in FM, ever? Cos I haven't.

    STATISTICS

As you can see, most chances, most shots on target, averaged 54% possession too. Set pieces were very high, as I mentioned in the other thread, I train a lot on set pieces.

    SQUAD

Goals came from everywhere as usual. It was nowhere near being one of the better squads in the Championship, picked up Clarke Harris for 1 million and Ferguson for 1.6, others being players I started with, loans and frees. As always the right players with the right attributes are necessary for the tactic to work.

  11. I’m currently playing a Sunderland save, though using my trusted 442 tactic but have been keeping an eye on Sunderland as I like to gauge how the players and team are in real life. Maguire and Gooch have been so effective.

    I would consider two options.

    - Wide attackers (AMR and AML) and one centre forward.

Wyke as a pressing forward on support.

Maguire as a wide playmaker in the (AMR) (I play him as a wide playmaker on (ML) and he had the most crosses and chances created for me in the league one season.

Gooch as a raumdeuter in the AMR position. I’ve never tried it but based on the way you’re suggesting Gooch plays that makes the most logical sense. Both players would perform more in central roles despite being in the wide positions.

    Second option

    - Flat front three.

Wyke as a pressing forward on support in the centre

Maguire as a deep lying forward or false nine in the Str R

    Gooch as an advanced forward.

Gooch as an inside forward on attack (or possibly raumedeter) as the Str L

i deffo wouldn’t play them in the Amc positions. Even if you have them stay wider it’s usually not effective.

As for having the two on the left on attack duty and the two on the right as support. Give it a go and see. Nothing to say it won’t work or do what you want it to.

Just going to give this tactic a go on my Nottingham Forest save, just got a couple of questions:

    1) Do you do opposition instructions or leave to your assistant manager?

    2) Touchline shouts do you use these or again leave to your assistant manager?

    3) Training wise you say heavy on set pieces training but what other training would you recommend?

    Thanks

Nope never do opposition instructions, don’t do shouts either. I tend to just tell players to ease off tackles if they’re on a booking but overall I just let my team play.
apart from heavy set piece training I do lots of wing play training and physical training.

Whilst I haven't tried it, got to say it's a very well wrote tactic thread but I think you missed out on attaching the tactic itself (you can still edit the post though and attach it). Got me really curious about a double stopper setup though, to me it doesn't make much sense.

If you can imagine two Nicolas Otamendi's on the pitch at the same time. That's how it acts. That's probably not reassuring but thankfully it works in the game.

So after years of using 451 and 433 variations I decided to go for a change, taking into account the current match engine and figuring out how it works I settled on a philosophy of

    - gung ho attacking football

    - lots of shots and crosses

    - flood the box looking for rebounds

    - set pieces, anything to maximise my scoring potential

    - heavy pressing

    - direct

    - high up the pitch

    - risky football with an old fashioned 442.

The results are very good. Back to back promotions with Plymouth without spending a single penny on a transfer.  86 and 92 goals scored in the two seasons.

Here's the formation and team instructions (AWAY from home I change the CMR to DEFEND duty, the CML to SUPPORT duty and take off STOPPER from the CB's, everything else stays the same)

The only team instruction I use that doesnt appear to be suitable for the style is the 'play out of defence' but I do this to simply reduce the overall aggressiveness of the direct balls. It stops the keeper and the centre backs ALWAYS doing it. In fact my keeper always plays it short.

    formation.thumb.jpg.b5f0965b592f036e9cc9073441f7634a.jpg

Here's some statistics showing that I'm getting more shots than anyone, creating more chances, getting more crosses and even the much sought after possession stats (despite not appearing to be a possession based tactic) This is purely because of the aggressiveness of which I get the ball back and create. These are all taken in my second season where the tactic is completely fluid and despite being newly promoted.

    chances.thumb.jpg.a0a913a5a51a7c097c440f456947e974.jpgcrosses.thumb.jpg.322485bc796071f5ceb1d018a990a8c0.jpg1103673484_shotsontrarget.thumb.jpg.b5cd579509a649e0ef4522e67a775f74.jpgpossesion.thumb.jpg.1d95c5b0ffa79cdebafc0f729d4f9a42.jpg

Most goals in the league two years in a row by some distance 86 and 92, squad stats also show I've managed to get my centre forwards scoring, something I found impossible using non 442 tactics.

My goals come from basically everywhere, I get a lot of SET PIECES (I have a heavy focus on these in training) LONG DISTANCE, REBOUNDS and HEADERS from CROSSES. One on ones are a problem but it makes no difference because the goals come from elsewhere.

    1322707160_leagueone.thumb.jpg.d9ae893f2be6b3b3f7dbd6fdcd5acc8e.jpg2039256796_leaguetwo.thumb.jpg.faef8f7491edddffed7f31cf7595dcf4.jpgstats.thumb.jpg.a02dec7431e88ea6a1505bf049805b34.jpg

Here are a few of my most impressive performances, these tend to be the type of statistics I see in most of my matches.

    454890981_boltonhome.thumb.jpg.d61a2aa273d1182a0b85b9d34be600b4.jpg1288552984_peterbrohome.thumb.jpg.339a36aa99fe922105753af433dcabb9.jpg1444125955_swanseahome.thumb.jpg.455262ca0223a23e14a5d52d75aedf3f.jpg

HOW IT PLAYS ON THE MATCH ENGINE - A typical match sees me dominate, my players do play it short but whenever someone is open or in space further up the pitch, the ball is launched. Of course you concede possession a lot doing this but the relentlessness as to which the players win it back means they'll get another chance to set up a chance at goal. Long range shots a plenty, rarely look for a perfect passing goal. It is get the ball in the goal as quickly as possible. Expect 100 mile an hour games with an avalanche of chances. Due to my offside trap and pacey defenders I constantly catch forwards offside.

    PLAYERS

Like with most tactics you do need the right players to make it work and although that is ten times more difficult in doing at a lower league level it can be done as long as its better than everyone elses.

GK - Goalkeepers are better in this FM than they've ever been, as long as youve got a good shot stopper to handle the ones on ones that come with playing a high line you'll be fine.

RB /LB - The areas of focus for me where CROSSING, STAMINA, WORK RATE and PACE. All these attributes I required players of between 11 and 20.

CB/CB -  Due to the high line and the high number of turnovers it is ESSENTIAL to have pacey centre backs. I wasnt too concerned about technical attributes but more so PACE, ACCELERATION, HEADING AND JUMPING REACH which I mostly had at between 11 and 20. PACE a minimum of 13 though.

RM - The most aggressive of my midfielders, again looking for more physical attributes like PACE STAMINA WORK RATE. The PPM'S with ball carrying work great too here.

CMR - The one player in my team I need to be technically gifted as hes the deepest and also my set piece taker. I got a player called Pedro MENDES on a free, As you can see from the team stats he got 17 assists. Most of these were from deep long balls and set pieces. So his PASSING, VISION, TECHNIQUE need to really be all above 11.

CML - Similar to the RM, because he's on attack duty I'm looking more for those runs forward, so PACE, STAMINA. A decent  LONG SHOT helps too as I have the team instruction set to shoot on sight.

ML - Admittedly probably the least effective player in my team, I've had Danny MAYOR there for two years and he's a bit jack of all trades with his attributes, he's also a right footer playing as a wide midfielder on support. Hopefully I can upgrade to a proper left winger in the summer and really see how the role performs.

FWDL - The main goalscoring threat, was very lucky to snap up Joe GARNER on a free, he's got good FINISHING, COMPOSURE stats and PPM's that suit a centre forward.

FWDR - Proper old fashioned partnership here which is I think quite essential, little and large. I've got Rudy GESTEDE who possesses STRENGTH, HEADING, JUMPING REACH, AGGRESSION etc. This tactic plays a lot of direct football and the ball needs to stick. If you stick a target man in this role it works wonders and is very impressive to see work.

    NEGATIVES

ONE ON ONE CHANCES  - Due to the aggressive nature of the press and high line, expect a lot of balls over the top leading to one on ones. But as we know, one on ones in this game are actually preferable to defending crosses, long shots etc. I very rarely have players running down the wings against me because the AI tends to only focus on catching me out with balls down the middle. This is great because my defenders are fast and can not only catch up a lot of the time but they can win the ball back and get to rebounds quickly.

YELLOW CARDS/RED CARDS - My team do a lot of tactical fouling, it is actually quite beautiful to watch, my centre backs have STOPPER on so charge into people a lot. I don't mind though.

    cards.thumb.jpg.430490d5187dea9100756d6372580bf0.jpg

    The OPPOSITION

I cant say I've noticed a difference in results based on what formation the opposition play, what they tend to always do is match me half way through the game. They will always try to change to a 442, especially if starting with a 352. Rarely changes the game really.
