I think the group stages and Germany result have banked enough goodwill for Gareth that he can get away with an upset without too much grief.

Theoretically we should make the final now and you could see anything less as a disappointment, then if we lose to Italy, Belgium or Spain it’s an honourable defeat more than a bottle job.

Can absolutely guarantee that's not the way Gunman will tell it in a year's time if this happens. Everything is a bottle job according to him.

I tend to avoid the internet a bit before and (depending on the result) after the game. Can get a bit too much

That tweet I posted yesterday of Henderson waiting to come on and celebrating Kane's goal. Lovely, but I decided to read the comments and it was just people moaning that Henderson is the real captain and should be captain over Kane etc :D FFS

I don't understand the obsession over captaincy in this country, I genuinely don't think it makes anywhere near as big a difference as people make out. Leaders and everything are important, but they don't need to be wearing an armband to have a positive influence.

You'd think that was obvious wouldn't you :D

I think the way I worded it made it sound like they planned specifically for Germany, but yeah I would have thought people would have worked out they didn't just plan for Germany. Hell, if we finished second or third we'd have faced completely different teams so they obviously will have looked at absolutely everyone.

Sorry but how can he know that it was likely they'd be facing Germany? They were in a tough group and had to finish 2nd to play England. And they haven't been particularly good, relative to other big nations, for a while so it was no guarantee they'd get out their group at all.

Southgate deserves credit but I kind of feel it's now going a bit over the top. Planning for Germany 18 months in advance because he senses they're going to play them at the Euros - Germany weren't even playing a back three regularly 18 months ago. Bringing on Grealish at that moment was a 'part of the plan', and not simply because England weren't creating a great many clear chances and probably needed something different.

They obviously knew they were facing one from that group. They didn't just plan for Germany obviously.

People moan that he isn’t a good tactician but I think he is the first manager since Glenn Hoddle to change systems mid-tournament depending on our opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. Not just chucking the same formation out every game and only changing the odd player if there is an injury or a suspension.

As rubbish as some of our performances in the nations league were, I think it's paid dividends now in a more important time. He's seen Rice and Phillips as a key partnership to give us defensive strength, and playing them together back then has given them more game time and therefore a stronger understanding. It feels like there's very good reasons for everything he's doing.

I get that it's not been thrill a minute, but I don't see how people can argue he got anything wrong against Germany. Seen people on twitter saying "we only looked good when Grealish came on!!!!" without realising that bringing him on at that time was a specific part of the plan to beat them.

People as well thought he only matched them up because of the Portugal game, but he's mentioned we knew we'd be likely facing Germany for 18 months. They've planned for that game, and many others, for ages. There's a good article in the Athletic about the analysis department that covers how much they've done looking at every team. Not that other teams are just winging it of course, but the 3-4-3 wasn't a spur of the moment decision.

  6. Henderson coming in makes complete sense, there's basically no reason not to. If Rice and Phillips both get booked then that would drastically affect planning for the semi final should we get there, but play Henderson with one of them you're not weakening the squad, and worst case scenario you just play Henderson again in the semi (assuming we get there)

And just an aside, and I know I've made the point a million times, but 3 years ago half our fan base were wanting Phillips sold and now people are discussing protecting him as he's too important to England going forward, this is so wild to me :D

Grealish did well when he came on. Wouldn't say he changed the game because that would be a diservice to the other players who did well.

I think England were starting to squeeze Germany more and apply more pressure. A sub helped (and was needed) also it moved Sterling to the right which is where the goal came from. Grealish did reinvigorate the crowd and give them a lift which can't be underestimated

Yeah, agree with this. Grealish a very good, and very important sub, but to me it wasn't like he started getting the ball and doing a million dribbles or anything so didn't change the game in that sense. He played a very good role though of course, and his assist was very good. It's obvious why people want him to start, but it's also obvious why Southgate benched him - probably already with the plan to bring him on with 20/30 minutes left. And tbf to him as well it doesn't seem he's moaning about it at all and is comfortable with being benched for England, as good as he is. Feels like in the past a player as good as him would be sulking all day long at the very thought of being benched.

Shaw a 6 ffs :D He was absolutely vital for both goals, that alone warrants a higher score and he wasn't exactly bad otherwise.

In the world of VAR, that's a blatant red card and an unforgivable ommission. We've seen reds given for softer hits.

Don't agree at all, it's one VAR will always stick with the ref's decision. His force isn't overly excessive, and you can see he wins the ball, but rolls over it. If a red is given it's not harsh, but there's not enough there to overturn a yellow card decision. He's not ridiculously out of control or anything like with the Sweden one.

Phillips, Rice, Foden, Maguire each 1 yellow away from missing the semi-final (were we to get there). Wonder if we might see one of Phillips and Rice rested so as not to risk them both being out at the same time.

I think Henderson might play against Ukraine because of this. Doesn't weaken the squad in any significant way, as much as I think Rice and Phillips has worked brilliantly. Mings has played well, but would he want to rest Maguire? Not sure. It's an interesting call either way.

I can't even remember it properly. Honestly every England game I've watched this Euros feels like a blur, and I've only been drinking during two of them :D

It's one VAR won't overturn either way. You can see it's absolutely a genuine attempt at the ball and he's not ridiculously forceful. But he catches him badly of course and a red wouldn't exactly be the most controversial decision ever, but I think yellow is fair.

Looked at the last couple of tournaments and WC 2018 was 2 a day, but Euro 2016 was done over 4 days. A little bit of both then!

Probably just depends on the tournament then I suppose. But at least we're both right :D I quite like having 2 games a day tbf.
