Back three and midfield

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, my first post here, and i wanted to get some advice on some things. Currently i want to play a back three giving full freedom to my wing-backs (they're pretty good both physically and technically and i have a lot of cbs)

I'm managing a underdog (a mid table team with some good players actually) and im having some difficulty creating chances, having efficient possession and doing good counter attacks. In away games i want to attack like a Conte side; while at home or against weaker teams i wanna have the control of the game and creating actual good chances. Most of my chances are long passes and as much those are great when they hit the spot, i don't really wanna depend on them every single time...

Anyway my TI's on away games where i wanna be a reactive side and kill it using counter attacks using a 3-5-2/3-5-1-1 is a Balanced mentality, Pass into space, higher tempo, counter, distribute quickly, mid block, higher defensive line, more often and drop off more. Usually i use the trigger press to make the attacking duo press.

Roles are the standard scorer and creator strikers, Mezz/APa, CMs with aggressive tackling, a DM/DLPs, a CDc and WCBs with dribble more. The WBS are the one at the mezz side Support, and the other on the scorer side in Attack with take more risks. Am i doing something wrong? And which ti's use to start being a consistently decent side at home?

Post a screenshot up of your tactic if you can please @Tom Jobim

The TI's are the ones i said in the post, at moment on home games i take off pass into space, add short passing and play out of defense, and change to positive mentality

Can you post the full tactic alongside the Tis? 3-5-2 (or 5-3-2) is one of my favorite formations in the game, but the way it's presented is making my head hurt lol. The full TIs like width etc. are important factors to making effective tweaks.

3-5-2 does struggle in taking control of games. The extra central defender concedes space higher up the park. On FM24 you could look to take advantage of the new positional play changes and play with a Libero who will step into a midfield 4 in possession. You'd need to rework some of the WCB/WB roles so you'd be a little less exposed. You could try using a WB(D) for some stability.

If you're seeing the play progress more quickly/directly than you'd like, try lowering the tempo. AF are great on the counter, but will make your play more oriented to direct football.

Sounds like you want "shorter passing" and "play out of defense" enabled.

Edit: Just read that you do, keep those instructions in  a separate slot so they'll learn and acquire cohesion.

I talk about the ti's in the third paragraph, sorry not being able to show a screenshot, im not at home. My main problem is really being efficient tactically speaking when playing counter attack, and controlling the game when needed. I like the way Conte teams play but sadly i cant just play reactive football every single game

On away games i use the standard width for Balanced. At home games or against weakers teams i change to Higher pressing + Higher LOE, slightly narrower, and short passing, slightly slower tempo as well as changing to high press and ticking off counter attack

I'm still playing FM 23 so i'm asking in general without counting things such as ME or buffed/nerfed roles, but i do plan to get 24 soon tho

Currently thinking about changing the WCBs to attack and the dm to a DLP(S), the af to PF(A), as well to changing passing to the shortest possible and maybe work ball into the box?

Put both the strikers in AF and both midfielders in either mezz(A) or cm(A) with move into channels and roam PI it is super effective cause the simple stuff you have at all times 4 players trying to attack the box and attack from crosses while you have 2 wide wingbacks(A) to deliver those low crosses into them and is pouring goals every match is a very simple but effective strategy to overload the box in FM i have used it for ages a shape like yours, if you put them on support you lose alot offensively cause mezz(S) will never attack the box will stay outside which is useless when best is to attack the cross and the box i have many season of cm(A) having 20 or 25 goals per season

Of course it's super effective to just put 8 players forward and swarm the box because the match engine can't deal with that. But is has nothing to do with halfway realistic football and i can just play EA FM if this would be the kind of football i want to see from my players.
