Criticism of not playing passing football, but short set?! Help!

Recommended Posts

Short passing doesn't necessarily equal passing football. The entire tactic (which we can't see) needs to be set up for it. It's not just a case of clicking one button and it all magically falls into place.

What changes can you recommend?

Tempted to try play out from the back but we do well getting it long quick

1) Change the LD to a standard Central Defender. The Limited Defender is going to hoof the ball at every opportunity.

2) Change your DM to a defend duty so you have a pivot who can recycle possession and switch play. Right now, your midfield is getting too compressed, so your players don't have passing lanes in depth. This means they either get rushed into high risk passes to heavily marked areas or end up playing it back to your defenders (one of whom is set to hoof it).

3) If the above changes aren't enough, consider not using an AP(A) since having an attacking playmaker will tend to encourage your team to quickly get the ball into heavily defended areas (from which the playmaker, if he actually receives, will look to quickly play it into space for the AF). A DLP or Roaming Playmaker will do more to increase your passing totals.

4) If you're still looking for more passes, consider using different roles on the flanks. Support Wingers will mainly look to play deep crosses for the AF, so even with short passing set, you're not going to see a lot of patience in build-up play. You can also select "Work Ball Into Box" and given them "Cross From Byline" PIs to get them to cross less.
