Specialist roles and team Style

Recommended Posts

I'm still struggling to get my head around team Styles and when to play Fluid and when not. According to threads ive seen Fluid should not be played if you have more than 1 'Specialist' player role in which case Rigid or Balanced is best.

But which player Roles does FM13 class as Specialist and why?

I know my question is somewhat vague but i just dont posses a tactical brain.

Thanks

wwfan explains what is classed as specialised and what isn't in here How to Play FM13: A Twelve Step Guide

The idea is a more rigid approach allows the role to flourish and focus is on those more by the mentality/creative structures that rigid allows.

Specialist roles are the non-generic roles that do something "different" - i.e. a Ball Winning Midfielder has much higher closing down and more aggressive tackling, a Deep-Lying Playmaker has reduced mentality and forward runs etc.

Non-specialist roles pretty much describe a position on the pitch, i.e. central defender, defensive midfielder, central midfielder etc. If the role focuses on what a player does, rather than the position he plays in, i.e. anchoring the midfield, being a playmaker, poaching etc, then it is specialist.

In theory, the more rigid the philosophy, the more specialist roles it can accommodate.

I consider the following to be specialist:

Target Man

Poacher

Trequartista

Advanced Playmaker

Box to Box Midfielder

Deep Lying Playmaker

Ball Winning Midfielder

Anchor Man

Libero

These four roles can fit in either camp, depending on your interpretation.

Complete Forward

Defensive Forward

Defensive Winger

Ball Playing Defender

Generic roles:

Advanced Forward

Deep Lying Forward

Attacking Midfielder

Central Midfielder

Defensive Midfielder

Inside Forward

Winger

Wide Midfielder

Wing Back

Full Back

Central Defender

Sweeper

I don't include keepers.

Thanks Cleon.

This probably a stupid question but im going to ask it anyway; If i have two players set as BWM and every other position is something non-specialist would i count that as my team having one or two specialists when deciding what style to chose?

Not Cleon but that sounds like a pretty fluid setup, as with 2 BWM you will need players to intelligently cover as they'll be running all around trying to tackle people.
