Saints still stumbling along!!!

We are now into the second month of the season and Hepburn's Saints are still struggling to get a consistent run of form together to try and push up the table. It has been a frustrating time of Hepburn and his players as the performances have been good but they are just not getting the luck of the green just now. Here is a run down of the latest games in the Saints season..........

Championship

Southampton v Stoke - (H) Mon 29th August 2005

A game the Saints dominated and scored a couple of good goals to show their superiority over a poor Stoke side who could not handle the pace and power of the Saints strikers. Steven Naismith was the star as he bagged a double in the first half but it could have been a lot more but for some poor finishing and good goalkeeping.

Final Score - Southampton 2 v 0 Stoke

Goals - Southampton - Naismith (3,38)

Att - 17395

MOTM - Steven Naismith (Southampton)

Championship

Southampton v Watford - (H) Sat 10th September 2005

Hepburn was left seething after this game as he saw two of his players sent off and could face further trouble for comments made about the referee after the match. It was the Saints first home loss of the season but the chances the Saints missed also left Hepburn in a foul mood. An early Marlon King goal for Watford proved to be the winner but Watford were lucky to escape with the win. The Saints battled away with nine men but could not find that all important equaliser.

Final Score - Southampton 0 v 1 Watford

Goals - Watford - King (6)

Sent Off - Stephen Murray, Darren Kenton (Southampton)

Att - 18535

MOTM - Malky MacKay

Championship

Leicester v Southampton - (A) Tues 13th September 2005

This was possibly the worst performance of Hepburn's reign as Southampton manager as his team showed nothing for the whole ninety minutes. No one performaed well and yet another Southampton player was sent off to add to Hepburn's misery. The defending was schoolboy at times and they showed nothing in attack. "It was just dire", Hepburn commented to the press after the match and it certainly was. That's two defeats in row now for Southampton as they fall further down the table.

Final Score - Leicester 2 v 0 Southampton

Goals - Leicester - Fryatt (37), Gudjonsson (65)

Sent Off - Claus Lundekvam (Southampton)

Att - 29644

MOTM - Patrick Kisnorbo (Leicester)

Championship

Ipswich v Southampton - (A) Sat 17th Spetember 2005

A game Hepburn will feel the Saints should have won. They had the better chances throughout and were dominant but again they could not put the ball in the back of the net and it cost them three points in the end.

Final Score - Ipswich 1 v 0 Southampton

Goals - Ipswich - Forester (75)

Att - 26713

MOTM - Michael Svensson

Carling Cup 2nd Round

Oldham v Southampton - (A) Wed 21st September 2005

Hepburn's side were struggling for goals before this game but whatever Hepburn said to his strikers it worked as they hit Oldham for five. The star of the show was young striker Kenwyne Jones who was just sensational as he grabbed a hat trick. Hepburn knows this boy has bags of potential and lets hope he keeps up this scoring form fot the remainder of the season. Oldham were truly awful but that was down to the hard work and determination of the Saints who worked their socks off to make up for their recent run of defeats. Gregor Rasiak also got on the scoresheet for the first time this season and Danny Higginbotham scored from the penalty spot. A terrific performance from the Saints and something to build on.

Final Score - Oldham 0 v 5 Southampton

Goals - Southampton - Jones (14,76,82), Rasiak (24), Higginbotham (pen,38)

Att - 6254

MOTM - Kenwyne Jones (Southampton)

Championship

Southampton v Sheffield Utd - (H) Sat 24th Spetember 2005

After the win at Oldam in the cup confidence was high at St Marys in preparation for the tough game against Steff Browning's Sheffield Utd minus their manager who has important business to attend to or computer aids. It was a great game for the Saints as they dominated the game and really should have scored a few more goals to reflect just how dominant they were. Jones got on the scoresheet again and youngster Dyer came on and scored his first goal for Southampton in the second half. Utd pulled a goal back in injury time but it was not enough to stop the Saints taking all three points.

Final Score - Southampton 2 v 1 Sheffield Utd

Goals - Southampton - Jones (35), Dyer (58)

Goals - Sheffield Utd - Wright (pen,90)

Att - 21977

MOTM - Stephen Murray (Southampton)

Championship

Cardiff v Southampton - (A) Tues 27th September 2005

The Saints were back on their travels again after the superb win over Sheffield Utd. It was up to Cardiff to take on Rob Perry's men. It was another great performance from the Saints with Darren Potter, on loan from Liverpool catching the eye of many as he made his debut for the Saints after recovering from injury. He grabbed a double as Cardiff could not cope with his movement off the ball. Young Kenwyne Jones scored another goal to continue his fine run of goalscoring to round off a great Saints performance. Cardiff did manage to pull a goal back through Hrgovic but it was no where near enough to prevent the Saints winning again.

Final Score - Cardiff 1 v 3 Southampton

Goals - Cardiff - Hrgovic (84)

Goals - Southampton - Potter (44,48), Jones (50)

Att - 10450

MOTM - Kenwyne Jones (Southampton)

It has been an indifferent month for the Saints started the month badly with three lossess but ended it on a high with three wins in a row. Lets hope this run of form continues and they push up the table and challenge the leaders.

Sheff United manager feels like using blades to slit wrists

Things are going from bad to worse at Bramall Lane as Sheffield United look destined for the relegation dogfight instead of battling for the playoffs icon_frown.gif

Saturday 26 November 2005: Wolves v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 2-0 loss

We found ourselves up against 2nd places Wolves here and not a even a call from third placed Reading manager, Tony Hall could inspire my lads, Hall must have surely been hoping that we could knock off Wolves and do his Reading side a favour as they looked to close the gap for the automatic promotion place.

The match itself was a throughly one-sided affair and sadly that one side was Wolves icon_frown.gif

They finally made the breakthrough in the 42nd minute through Denese Rosa, and ten minutes later in the 52nd minute they all but wrapped up the points through Rohan Rickets.

Saturday 3rd December 2005: Sheff Utd v Plymouth : Coca-Cola Championship : 3-0 win \o/

Finally back to winning ways!

Steven Kabba opened the scoring in the 20th minute, Sheffield United got a fortunate break 11 minutes after the opener as Jon Hoyles was sent off for Plymouth in the 31st minute, this allowed Steven Kabba to find space in behind the defence to clamly slot home the second goal in the 35th minute. On the stroke of half time Plymouth's game plan and discipline simply collapsed as Paul Connolly was sent off for a shocking tackle on Kabba. Four minutes after the restart the game was over as a contest as Kabba completed his hat trick. The only downside to this match was the injury to Alan Quinn that will see him out of action for two months.

Saturday 10th December 2005: Millwall v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola championship : 5-1 <STRIKE>raping</STRIKE> loss

Well after the performance against Plymouth, most would have expected us to give Millwall a good here right?

NO!

Things started badly as Berry Powel opened the scoring for Millwall in the 14th minute, things seemed to pick up in the 17th minute as Ade Akinbiyi pulled the blades level. Sadly this was all we offered up in the way of offence as Millwall went on to crush us like the little bitches we are icon_frown.gif Barry Hayles put Millwall back in from in the 43rd minute and Berry Powel grabbed his second of the game right on the stroke of half time. Into the second half and in the 62nd minute Barry Hayles grabbed his second of the game and Lloyd Dyer completed the rout in the 64th minute.

This lot are rubbish angryfire.gif

Tuesday 13th December 2005: Sheff Utd v Crystal Palace : Coca-Cola Championship : 1-1 draw

Zis iz Eric Cantona taking over zis match report.

Ze gaffer had a heart attack just before kick off and was rushed to l'hopital just before ze start of ze game, I think it was ze thought of facing le future champions Crystal Palace that did it to him icon_frown.gif

But now it iz my chance to shine in ze dugout, and if the Crystal Palace fans don't learn how to keep their mouths shut or i'll give zem ze kung fu kick.

Against all odds Steven Kabba opened ze scoring in le 6th minuite and a battling performance saw us hold on until the 62nd minute when ze Palace managed to pull level through Jon Macken. Both teams had chances to win ze game but in ze end a draw was a fair reflection.

Je adore le football management! but for now I must go I have some more nike commericals to make.

Vive Le France!

Saturday 17 December 2005 : Sheff Utd : v Brighton : Coca-Cola Championship: 2-0 win

Another win \o/

We dominated this match from start to finish and it was little surprise when Steven Kabba opened the scoring in the 18th minute and the only shock was that it took until the 71st minute for the Blades to score again through Krisztian Kenesei.

3 points \o/ oh how precious icon_biggrin.gif

Monday 26th December 2005 : Reading v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 4-0 defeat

Another crushing defeat here icon_frown.gif

The player that Norwich manager Sandy Pettigrew had been shouting about, Vincent Pericard opened the scoring in the 27th minute, I guess Reading Manager Tony Hall knows a bit more about a decent player than Pettigrew, this is probably why Hall's Reading side are in 3rd place and Pettigrew's Norwich are lying in 8th place. Sheff Utd managed to keep the game alive as a contest (god knows how) until half time. Kevin Doyle opened the second half action as he gave Reading a two goal cushion a minute after the restart, a Nicky Shorey penalty made it three in the 61st minute. The pain was completed via Scott Goldbourne in the 75th minute icon_frown.gif

P!sh.

Lurching from one crisis to another here, dropping more points that we are picking up and losing goals left right and centre, its now not a chase of can we make the playoffs but more a question of can we avoid the drop?

Where Eagles dare

How much longer can this incredible run go on? Surely Palace will lose this month, they face premiership giants Arsenal in the Carling Cup Quarter Finals, and fellow EFB Managers Rob Perry’s Cardiff at Ninian Park and Steff Browning’s Blades at Bramall Lane in the Championship, some tough games icon_eek.gif

watford_home.png Watford V Palace palace_home.png

4th December 2005

A trip to Vicarage Road and Jon Macken was on fire for this one! He has been in impressive form lately, but he was sizzling for this fixture. Despite Watford taking the lead in the 4th Minute when Bouzza headed home, the team recovered well and Macken put palace on level terms less than 10 minutes later. He struck again before 20 minutes of the game had passed to give the visitors the lead, and Jobi McAnuff stretched the lead with a well taken goal just past the half hour. The second half was the same story with Palace continuing to dominate, and Jon Macken rounded off a Man of the Match performance with his hatrick just after the hour mark. A rare blunder from Leigertwood led to a brief glimmer of hope for Watford as he put the ball into his own net, but another own goal , this time from Malkay Mackay into the Watford goal, put paid to that. The crowd were going mad and singing out the managers name and a huige cheer went up as he acknowledged the travelling fans icon_cool.gif

At home to the jug eared ones beloved club, and it was pretty much the same story as it has been for the majority of the season, Palace outfoxed the foxes. Gottwald scored first, then Macken made it 2-0 just before half an hour had passed. Macken is in the form of his life at the moment and he was everywhere screaming for the ball, driving the other players on, and it was no surprise when he received the man of the match award for the second successive game! Soares buried the game with a goal of the highest quality just after the hour. Steff Browning and his Blades played host for this encounter (and yes I did check it was Steff this time, although he mysteriously disappeared from the dugout early in the game). Kabba scored the opening goal and sent the home fans into raptures as he rushed towards them to celebrate! Palace struggled and could not get the equaliser in the first half. The second half saw Jon Macken ignite the game with a superb goal to level the score. Try as he might though he could not get the winner, and Palace had to be content with a share of the points which was perhaps a tad generous to the home side icon15.gif, although Jon Macken maintained his recent run of Man of the Match displays and picked up the award for the third time in a row! icon_biggrin.gif

Tom Soares doubled the lead when he scored in the 36th minute and Cardiff were looking overwhelmed! Ebiede pulled one back for the bluebirds just after the restart, but a moment of Macken Magic put the result beyond doubt 2 minutes later and sealed Mackens 4th Successive Man of the Match Magnum! It has been rumoured that the manager, Paul Rouch, is confiscating the champagne from the lads and drinking it on their behalf so that they can concentrate on winning the Championship! 20th December 2005 – Carling Cup Quarter Final

The big day is here and the players, staff and fans are all up for this game, their biggest of their season, at Highbury against the premiership giants Arsenal! A place in the two legged semi finals of the Carling cup beckons for the winner of this tie, and Palace fans are dreaming of Promotion and a final! The first half saw Palace pinned back in their own half in a very defensive mode as Arsenal’s free flowing attacking style took a hold of the game. Richie Foran had to go off injured after 7 minutes which must have upset the game plan for the team! The second half however was a different kettle of fish, as the team seemed transformed after what must have been one hell of a half time chat from their manager!! Man of the moment Jon Macken struck first sending shockwaves through Highbury! He rant to the palace supporters and screamed in ecstasy! The Highbury library become a cacophony of noise as the travelling fans started to party! But little did they realise that the whole night was going to get better and better! Jobi McAnuff put Palace into wonderland as he put them two ahead and then in the space of two minutes, with the smile of the last goal still on the visiting fans faces Jon Macken rounded off a superb evening and his own fine performance with a second goal for him and the clubs third goal of the night icon_eek.gif Even the most foolhardy gamblers would not have taken a punt on this score (even you Sandy!) The Rsenal players looked devastated and could not believe what was happening to them, the Eagles fans were taunting the Gunners with the chant of “Premier league? Yer ‘aving a laugh!†Kerrea Gilbert then sealed a night of misery for the gooners when he got himself sent off with only 3 minutes left. When the whistle went Paul Rouch quickly shook hands with Arsene Wenger then sprinted on to the pitch to congratulate his team and celebrate with the fans who were by now chanting “Paul Rouch’s Barmy Army†icon_biggrin.gif Although 3-0 was flattering scoreline no one was going to take anything away from the team, except Fitz Hall, who had his Man of the Match Magnum of champagne taken away by the manager! icon_biggrin.gif

The early signs were good for the Eagles however, especially when Marcus Berg put the visitors ahead mid way through the first half. Palace continued to dominate but were unable to put the Saints to the sword and paid the price when late on in the second half Kenwyne Jones equalised for the home side and earned a very undeserved point for the scummers. icon_mad.gif

Reading Scorers: Ivar Ingimarsson (34) & Dave Kitson (Pen 90)

Attendance: 16,361

MOM: Ivar Ingimarsson (Reading)

Close match this, I was lucky enough to get away with this draw with Kitson saving me with a 90th minute penalty after Ingimarsson scored his first goal of the season before Cardiff scored their two goals.

Reading Scorers: Dave Kitson (13, 19) & Stephen Hunt (90)

Attendance: 24,360

MOM: Kenwyne Jones (Southampton)

A game we deserved to lose, having gone 2-0 up in the first half with two goals from Dave Kitson before we conceded 4 goals in the second half to throw the game away. Stephen Hunt did score a late goal but it was not to be.

Attendance: 23,230

MOM: Sergio Leite (Hull)

Reading Injuries: John Oster (32) & Graeme Murty (80)

A game we should have won but again the defence let me down in the last 10 minutes of the game. Unfortuntely I was away from keyboard when this game was played but from the look of things it was a close match.

Reading Scorers: Vincent Pericard (44 & 71), James Harper (66)

Attendance: 16.795

MOM: Vincent Pericard (Reading)

Red Cards: Danny Szetela (Norwich) (90)

Well what can I say, the very player Sandy said was no good scored not only once but twice against his side. Yep you guessed it Vincent Pericard scored the first goal in the 44th minute and then scored again in the 71st minute with James Harp scoring in between the two goals to complete the 3-0 win over Norwich. I sensed a bit of sour grapes from Mister Pettigrew as he didn’t stick around long enough to congratulate me on the win after the match had finished.

Championship Position at end of sessions: 4th

The Saints Sun - Oh when the Saints go marching on!!!!

Hepburn's Saints are finally getting into their stride with some impressive performances over the last couple of months and even with Hepburn's absence the team seem to be doing him proud. here is a run down of the latest games from St Mary's.....

Championship

Southampton v Hull - (H) Sat 1st October 2005

Southampton will feel hard done by as they only managed a point from this game when it really should have been three. They had all the chances and all the poessession but could not turn that into goals. Jones and Naismith were misfiring today and Hepburn was left frustrated with only a point as they lose ground on early leaders Crystal Palace.

Final Score - Southampton 0 v 0 Hull

Att - 18234

MOTM - Damien Delaney (Hull)

Championship

Southampton v Crewe - (H) Sat 15th October 2005

They made up for the last game against Hull, with an astonishingly good performance at home to Crewe. Crewe have a lot of great youngsters in their team but not one of them could get anywhere near a Southampton player. It was chance after chance and almost goal after goal for the Saints as they were relentless against a sorry Crewe defence that did include Billy Jones at the time. Rasiak helped himself to a double and Potter and Jones got one goal each but it really could have been a cricket score.

Final Score - Southampton 4 v 0 Crewe

Goals - Southampton - Rasiak (22,37), Jones (32), Potter (88)

Att - 17667

MOTM - Grzegorz Rasiak (Southampton)

After a meeting with chairman Rupert Lowe, who was desperate to keep Hepburn at the club they both decided that young Hepburn needed a much needed week away in the sunshine of Tenerife to take his mind off football and recharge the batteries as he was starting to feel the effects of football management. Lowe granted his wish left Hepburn's assistant in charge who did really well while Hepburn was away. Here is how he did.....

QPR v Southampton - (A) Tues 18th October 2005

Final Score - QPR 2 v 0 Southampton

Burnley v Southampton - (A) Sat 22nd October 2005

Final Score - Burnley 0 v 0 Southampton

Norwich v Southampton - (A) Sat 5th November 2005

Final Score - Norwich 1 v 1 Southampton

Southampton v Luton - (H) Sat 19th November 2005

Final Score - Southampton 2 v 0 Luton

Coventry v Southampton - (A) Sat 26th November 2005

Final Score - Coventry 1 v 0 Southampton

Southampton v Sheffield Wednesday - (H) Sat 3rd December 2005

Final Score - Southampton 1 v 0 Sheffield Wednesday

Derby v Southampton - (A) Sat 10th December 2005

Final Score - Derby 1 v 3 Southampton

Wolves v Southampton - (H) Tues 13th December 2005

Final Score - Southampton 3 v 1 Wolves

Southampton v Plymouth - (H) Sun 18th December 2005

Final Score - Southampton 0 v 0 Plymouth

Millwall v Southampton - (H) Mon 26th December 2005

Final Score - Southampton 4 v 1 Millwall

It has been an impressive run of form for Southampton under Hepburn's assistant who has led them on an elven game unbeaten run taking the scalps of Wolves and Leeds along the way. It has seen them shoot into fourth spot only a couple of points behind second placed Wolves and Reading. Lets hope now Hepburn is back in charge that he can push the Saints into second place at least and gain automatic promotion back to the Premiership.

The rise of the rusty blades!

Things have become a bit of a mightmare around Bramall lane way of late, Players failing to perform, manager failing to perform, then something changed......

Here's a brief look at our recent run of games.

Wednesday 28th December 2005 : Sheff Utd v Stoke : Coca-Cola Championship : 2-0 win

A comfortable win here as we overcame a decent Stoke side, veteran Neil Shipperly opened the scoring in the 20th minute and Steven Kabba grabbed the second on 31mins. On a more sour note goalkeeper Paddy

Kenny went off injured just before the hour mark and will be out of action for at least two months icon_frown.gif

Monday 2nd January 2006 : Sheff Utd v Watford : Coca-Cola Championship : 1-0 loss

A new year and two new signings making their debut for Sheff Utd, 1.1million pound signing from Crystal Palace, clinton Morrision and 5k siging from Celtic Neil Lennon, sadly they couldn't inspire a win in any way shape or form as we continued in the same vein as we have been going for most of the season, we can't finish our chances!

A 4th minute goal from Marlon King was enough to defeat us when in reality we could have scored 6 or 7 with Clinton Morrison being the biggest culprit of missed chances.

Wednesday 4th January 2006 : Ipswich v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 7-0 loss

Right! quite obviously something went badly wrong in my pre match team talk as central defender Leigh Bromby thought he was playing in goal and more worryingly none of my keepers had anything to say about this!

Ipswich didn't take long to take advantage of this chaos! as Alan Lee fired them into a second minute lead and Ian Westlake followed up with the second in the 7th minute. Darren Currie grabbed the third in the tenth minute and this was followed up five minutes later by Westlakes second goal of the match.

After this somehow we managed to keep them at bay until half time!

This didn't last long though as Kevin Horlock fired in the 5th goal for Ipswich right after the restart.

Nicky Forster completed my misery in the final eight minutes with a late double (82mins and 90mins)

Playing a defender in goal, I'm and idiot icon_frown.gif

Saturday 7th Janauary 2006 : Newcastle v Sheff Utd : FA Cup Third Round : 3-1 loss

Up against Premiership opposition here and it was always going to be a big ask for us to advance to the next round and our chance was effectivley gone after only nine minutes of the match, Shola Ameobi opened the scoring in the 6th minute and Albert Luque killed us off a mere three minutes later, Scotty Parker added the third in the 66th minute and Steven Kabba grabbed a consolation goal for us in the 72nd minute.

One plus though, we did manage to injure Michael Owen \o/

Saturday 14th January 2006: Leicester v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 4-1 win

Things didn't start too brightly here for us as Elivs Hammond gave Leicester the lead in the 13th minute. Things went from bad to worse as Derek Geary was sent off for us in the 45th minute.

Our second half performance was a joy to behold though, Cesar Jimenez pulled us level with his first goal for the club in the 53rd minute, two minutes later Jonathan Forte shot us into the lead. The numbers were evened up in the 59th minute as Joey Gudjonsson was sent off for Leicester, cliton Morrison put the result beyond doubt with his first goal for the club in the 89th minute , Forte put the icing on

the cake with his second goal in the 90th minute.

Saturday 21st January 2006: Crewe v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 2-0 win

Got off to a great start here as Clinton Morrison fired us into an early lead in the 5th minute, I had hoped we would go on to dominate the match but it wasn't to be as Crewe pushed hard and created many chances themselves, and only some great goalkeeping by Phil Barnes kept our lead intact and right at the death of the match after some great play by Morrison, Steven Kabba was able to slot the ball home to secure all three points.

Tuesday 31st January 2006: Hull v Sheff Utd : Coca-Cola Championship : 3-0 win

We expected a tough game here and the scorline probably flattered us a little bit as Hull did have some great chances in the game only to denied by a man of the match performance from our keeper Phil Barnes.

Michael Tonge opened the scoring in the 38th minute, this was pivotal moment in the match as up until that point either team could have gained the upper hand, the rest of the match became affair until the 77th minute when Steven Kabba unleased a magnificent 30 yard volley into the top right hand corner of the Hull net, Clinton Morrison rounded off the match by converting a penalty kick in the 89th minute.

3 in a row \o/

Saturday 4th February 2006: Sheff Utd v Southampton: Coca-cola Championship: 3-2 loss

Up against one of the promotion favourites here in Andrew Hepburn's Southampton, before the game Hepburn was moaning about the fact his strikers were struggling to find the net, well they found the net here no problem icon_frown.gif

Djamel Belmadi opened the scoring for Southampton in the 14th minute and we were lucky to go in all sqaure at half time thanks to a Clinton Morrison goal right on the stroke of half time, which was our only shot on target in the first 45. Second half we played a better game and took the lead through Morrison again in the 63rd minute, our lead was short lived though as Steven "I'm a Kilmarnock reject" Naismith levelled in the 66th minute,

Kenwyne Jones wrapped up the points for Southampton in the 83rd minute.

A better performance but still 3 points dropped icon_frown.gif

Saturday 11th February 2006: Sheff Utd v Cardiff : Coca-Cola Championship : 4-0 win

Up against fellow under-achiveres here in Cardiff under the crazy guidance of that Anglo-American Rob Perry, Perry had put together a good run of form for his Cardiff side and was looking to extend it here. Clinton Morrison opened the scoring in the 10th minute and followed up 15mins later with the second, Steven Kabba made it 3-0 in the 35th minute. Steven Kabba completed the scoring fun in the 76th minute.

The only sour note of the match from our point of view was the Injury to Phil Barnes that will keep him out for two weeks.

Cardiff will feel more than hard done to as they had more shots on target than us, but still they'll be no bluebirds singing in Sheffield tonight \o/

Tuesday 14th February 2006: Q.P.R v Sheff Utd : Coca-cola Championship : 3-2 win

Not a very happy Valentines day for Q.P.R here are they were brushed aside in a manner that the scorline failed to reflect accruatley, Michael Tonge fired us into the lead in the 14th minute, Gareth Ainsworth levelled things up six minutes later but their relief lasted only two minutes as Garry Flitcroft put us back into the lead in the 22nd minute, Steven kabba extended the lead even futher on the hour mark, Marc

Nygaard pulled one back for Q.P.R in the 83rd minute but out defence just shut up shop after that and saw the game out \o/

So things are looking up here! icon_biggrin.gif

Not losing anywhere near the ammount of game we where earlier in the season, playoff hope still alive?

Reading Report

Session Date: 13th April 2006

Results

championship.gif

Reading_home.png Reading 1 vs 0 Q.P.R qpr_away.png

Reading Scorer: Dave Kitson (86)

Attendance: 24,106

MOM: Lee Cook (Q.P.R)

Good match from both sides but it all came to a head when Dave Kitson scored a late 86th minute goal, is the striker perhaps returning to form?

Leeds_home.png Leeds 1 vs 3 Reading Reading_away.png

Leeds Scorer: Eddie Lewis (47)

Reading Scorers: Vincent Pericard (22 & 61) & Scott Golbourne (90)

Attendance: 28,861

MOM: Scott Golbourne (Reading)

Reading Injuries: Vincent Pericard (70)

Red Cards: Aaron Brown (Reading)

A game we won comfortably, although Aaron Brown didn’t help things by getting sent off early in the game, Vincent Pericard scored two brilliant goals to cement his status as the clubs top scorer, Scott Golbourne scored another goal to cement his first team position.

Facup.jpg

4th Round

Reading_home.png Reading 0 vs 1 Wolves Wolves_away.png

Wolves Scorer: Mark Kennedy (4)

Attendance: 24,070

MOM: Stefan Postma (Wolves)

Disappointed to be kicked out of the FA Cup by a side who I believe were not the superior side in this match. Wolves scored a flukey 4th minute goal and then were forced to defend as Reading unleashed attack after attack on their goal but the 11 people in the Wolves defence kept the score line at 0-1 in Wolves favour leaving Reading to concentrate solely on promotion to the premiership.

championship.gif

preston_home.png Preston 2 vs 3 Reading Reading_away.png

Preston Scorers: Dave Nugent (45) & Paul McKenna (56)

Reading Scorers: Glen Little (25) & Vincent Pericard (38 & 72)

Attendance: 17,801

MOM: Steve Sidwell (Reading)

A very close match between the two sides after Reading went 2-0 up only to concede 2 sloppy goals but Vincent Pericard came to Reading’s rescue again to add his second goal of the game to end the match on a 2-3 scoreline in Reading’s favour.

Reading_home.png Reading 1 vs 1 Norwich norwich_away.png

Reading Scorer: Vincent Pericard (10)

Norwich Scorer: Ryan Jarvis (21)

Attendance: 24,109

MOM: Jurgen Colin (Norwich)

Red Cards: Dickson Etuhu (Norwich) (8)

A game I haven’t got the clue on how we did not win as in my opinion we outplayed Sandy’s Norwich and we had a one man advantage after Dickson Etuhu got himself a straight Red Card in the eighth minute. All I can say is Sandy certainly used the tactics well to put all his players in defence after getting his equaliser. However I do have to say it makes my proud to have Vincent Pericard score another and his third goal against Sandy in a week.

Reading_home.png Reading 1 vs 0 Burnley burnley_away.png

Reading Scorers: Vincent Pericard (86)

Attendance: 23,597

MOM: Steve Sidwell (Reading)

What can I say close match but yet again Vincent Pericard scores a late goal to give us the match. Pericard is having a stormer of a season at Reading and I hope that if we go up he can take the Premiership by storm as well.

Luton_home.png Luton 1 vs 4 Reading Reading_away.png

Luton Scorer: Kevin Nicholls (15)

Reading Scorers: Dave Kitson (9 & 78), Leroy Lita (48) & Glen Little (90)

Attendance: 10,458

MOM: Glen Little (Reading)

Red Cards: David Bell (Luton) (30)

Reading are certainly on the promotion drive and with this result it will just give the players even more confidence of promotion. I decided to give Pericard a rest for this match and by the looks of the score line the team didn’t miss him as Leroy Lita returned from injury to score a goal and Dave Kitson returned to form and scored two goals and Glen Little scored from a wonderfully taken free kick.

Reading_home.png Reading 2 vs 0 Coventry coventry_away.png

Reading Scorers: Dave Kitson (Pen 9 & 12)

Attendance: 24,083

MOM: Dave Kitson (Reading)

Red Cards: Robert Page (Coventry) (69)

Dave Kitson has definitely returned to form, with his two goals Coventry didn’t have anything to answer to them so with this result it puts us up into 2nd and my hope of automatic promotion to the premiership is intact. I think 1st place is out of the question as Palace are unseemingly unstoppable and its out of Reading, Southampton and Wolves to get 2nd position.

Championship Position at end of session: 2nd

Where Eagles dare

So we approach the new year and with so much to look forward to for the Palace fans. A league Cup Semi Final against Man City and an FA cup match against Man United! An unbeaten run still in the league with Palace staring automatic promotion and a championship win in the face… oh happy days!!

Leeds_home.png Leeds Vs Palace palace_home.png

2nd January 2006

A slow start for both sides but Palace got going in the second half and really took Leeds apart in front of their own fans! Michal Gottwald scored the first goal just before the hour and that kick started a massacre! Andy Johnson and Tom Soares both scored within 3 minutes of each other and AJ got the final goal with only seconds left on the refs watch. A fine way to start the new year, and to cap it all off, Danny Granville picked up the Man of the Match award icon_biggrin.gif

4th January 2006

Another slow starting game but unlike the Leeds one, this one never got going and a single strike from the goal machine that is AJ was enough to give Palace the three points, Danny Granville picked up a second successive Man of the Match magnum too icon14.gif

7th January 2006 – FA Cup 3rd Round

A day out at the Theatre of Dreams, and not even the most ardent Eagles fan could have dreamed of the result from this game!! The third game of the year with no goals in the first half burst into life in the second half! Gottwald got the fans singing with a superb strike immediately after the restart and Richie Foran had them feeling “Glad All Over†when he doubled the advantage to really wind up the OT faithful. Man U were not likely to give up that easy though but despite their best efforts they were unable to get back into the game! Tony Popovic confirming that the defensive line plays an important in the Palace success story by grabbing the Man of the Match Champagne as the Palace boys partied hard next to the Prawn sandwich brigade celebrating another famous scalp for this remarkable season icon_cool.gif

A penalty after three minutes seemed to set the tone for this match, a clean game with some bizarre and harsh refereeing! Micah Hyde converted the first of three penalties to be awarded in this match, this one for the visiting team. Gottwald converted the next awarded Penalty for the home side and ensured the sides went in level at the half time whistle. Foran netted the third bizarre award of the day while Marcus Berg grabbed the only goal from open play midway through the second half to seal the victory for the Eagles icon_smile.gif

25th January 2006 – League Cup Semi Final Second Leg

A full house for the biggest game of the season (so far!) at Selhurst Park, and although a seemingly impossible task of overturning the 2 goal deficit lay before them, the team were looking very positive, and the crowd were right behind them! Tom Soares sent all the hearts a flutter and gave everyone hope at the close of a very tight first half when he struck home to send the eagles in ahead at the break! In the second half palace camped in the city half but were unable to find that elusive precious second goal and the team slumped to the turf at the final whistle icon_frown.gif The crowd were fantastic though and sung and danced as if they won, celebrating the journey rather than the final destination icon14.gif

28th January 2006

A hectic schedule for January showed no signs of letting up but despite the crushing disappointment of the previous game Palace responded well taking the lead via a well crafted Emmerson Boyce goal which was enough to see Palace to the break with a deserved lead. Jon Macken doubled the advantage mid way through the second half but the lead was halved again almost immediately when the dome headed Dublin pulled one back against the run of play. Super AJ to the rescue with the insurance goal 5 minutes before time to ensure the three points for Palace and another Man of the Match award for his collection icon_cool.gif

28th January 2006

After a month of disappointments for the Palace faithful, a spectacular finale, with yet another Man of the Match performance from top scorer Andy Johnson, who nabbed 4 goals in this onesided game! Tom Soares opened the goal fest after just 8 minutes, and Gottwald slotted home a penalty less than half an hour later, with Johnson grabbing 2 of his 4 in the final 5 minutes of the half. Morgan pulled a consolation goal back for the home side but all that did was flatter to deceive as Palace finished off the game in clinical style with AJ getting another Brace in the second half and Richie Foran adding his name to the scoresheet as the palace fans went searching for the record books ! icon_biggrin.gif

The Saints Sun - The race for second hots up!!!

Hepburn is now back in charge of the Saints after his break and has consolidated and propelled the Saints into real contention for the runners up spot in the Championship along with Reading and Wolves who are pushing each other all the way. With the league all but over as Palace are so far ahead there is still a lot of interest in the race for second place. Here is a rundown of the latest games in the Saints push for automatic promotion..........

Championship

Southampton v Crystal Palace - (H) Wed 28th December 2005

What a huge game for Hepburn to come back to as runaway league leaders Crystal Palace came to St Mary's intent on keeping their unbeaten run in tact. Hepburn had is own team's unbeaten to think about as well. It was a game that Palace dominated and should have been a few goals up by half time. Luckily for the Saints they only had a Berg goal to show for their efforts. Hepburn was not happy and in the second half it was a different Southampton team. They actually competed and started to make a game of it and got in amongst the Palace players. Rouch's Palace were made to pay for all those misses as Kenwyne Jones popped up with the equaliser for the Saints nine minutes from time to give Southampton an undeserved and lucky point, but hey we'll take it.

Final Score - Southampton 1 v 1 Crystal Palace

Goals - Southampton - Jones (81)

Goals - Palace - Berg (28)

Att - 24259

MOTM - Tony Popovic (Crystal Palace)

Championship

Southampton v Reading - (H) Mon 2nd January 2006

Another huge game here as Tony Hall's pormotion chasing Reading came to St Mary's in a game that could go a long way to decide who finishes in second place come the end of the season. This was a funny old game as the Saints dominated the opening stages and yet found themselves 2-0 down at half time due to two Dave Kitson goals. Hepburn was not panicking and knew the goals for the Saints would come. The goals eventually did come and they started to fly in. Naismith got the Saints back into the game with a goal early in the second half. This gave them some belief that they could get something out the game and then two quickfire goals left Reading stunned. Firstly Jones scored in seventy minutes then only three minutes later Murray put Southampton ahead much to the delight of Hepburn and the fans!!! Jones then grabbed his second and Southampton's fourth and there seemed no way back for Reading. They pulled a goal back in injury time but it was not enough in the end as the Saints finally earned a deserved three points.

Final Score - Southampton 4 v 3 Reading

Goals - Southampton - Naismith (51), Jones (70,81), Murray (73)

Goals - Reading - Kitson (13,19), Hunt (90)

Att - 24360

MOTM - Kenwyne Jones (Southampton)

Championship

Brighton v Southampton - (A) Wed 4th January 2006

After two tough home games, Hepburn was glad to see the back of St Mary's as it was off to the beach in Brighton and of course to play some football. The Saints started the game as if they were still on the beach and Brighton took full advantage as Hammond fired them ahead inside two minutes. Hepburn was not too happy and fired his team up and they immediately went on the attack in search of an equaliser. They got the equaliser through Kenwyne Jones and then he quickly got a second to put the Saints in control till half time. Yet again though in the second half Southampton went to sleep at the back and Brighton were level. It was yet another good response from the Saints as they pressed for another goal and Jones fired in his hat trick to put the Saints ahead again. Rasiak then added a fourth to put the icing on the cake for the Saints. Terrific game for the fans but left both managers tearing their hair out!!!!!

Final Score - Brighton 2 v 4 Southampton

Goals - Brighton - Hammond (2), McKenzie (47)

Goals - Southampton - Jones (16,24,77), Rasiak (84)

Att - 5880

MOTM - Kenwyne Jones (Southampton)

FA Cup 3rd Round

Southampton v Barnet - (H) Sun 8th January 2006

After the pressures of the Championship it was a welcome distraction being in the FA Cup as they faced Barnet, looking to cause an upset. Unfortunately for them they found the Saints in formidable form and Barnet were brushed aside with some great attacking football in the first half that saw the Saints score three times through Naismith, Potter and Rasiak. The second half was nothing more than a training exercise although Rasiak did add a fourth but other than that it was all Southampton and they could have ran up a cricket score here if they wanted to!!!

Final Score - Southampton 4 v 0 Barnet

Goals - Southampton - Naismith (5), Potter (19), Rasiak (29,55)

Sent Off - Adam Groves (Barnet)

Att - 15326

MOTM - Stephen Murray (Southampton)

Championship

Stoke City v Southampton - (A) Sat 14th January 2006

A professional and efficent performance from the Saints here, saw them run out comfortable winners in the end as they travelled to Stoke. Rasiak got the Saints off to a great start with a goal in five minutes and they looked to build on this goal but were unable to find a way through until ten minutes from time when Michael Duberry put the ball in his own net. Southampton should have scored more but Hepburn was more than happy with the three points.

Final Score - Stoke City 0 v 2 Southampton

Goals - Southampton - Rasiak (5), Duberry (og,80)

Att - 12278

MOTM - Paul Smith (Southampton)

Championship

Southampton v Ipswich - (H) Sat 21st January 2006

Hepburn was wanting his team to keep this incredible run going and next up was Ipswich at St Marys. It was another game that the Saints dominated from start to finish but were made to pay for a host of missed chances as Ipswich escaped with a draw. Rasiak put the Saints ahead in the second half but right at the death Westlake scored a dramatic equaliser to grab a point.

Final Score - Southampton 1 v 1 Ipswich

Goals - Southampton - Rasiak (53)

Goals - Ipswich - Westlake (90)

Sent Off - Jaime Peters (Ipswich)

Att - 25108

MOTM - Lewis Price (Ipswich)

FA Cup 4th Round

Southampton v WBA - (H) Sat 28th January 2006

It was back to the FA Cup for the Saints where they faced Premiership side WBA in what was going to be a tough game. Southampton produced one of their best performances and Hepburn was absolutely delighted with it. They dominated WBA for long spells and they had no answer to the Saints attacking prowess. Darren Potter was the hero for the Saints as he grabbed two goals. Kenwyne Jones scored a third for the Saints as they were rampant. A fantastic performance from the Saints and well worth their fifth round slot.

Final Score - Southampton 3 v 0 WBA

Goals - Southampton - Potter (pen,23,48), Jones (27)

Att - 15945

MOTM - Paul Smith (Southampton)

Championship

Southampton v Leicester - (H) Tues 31st January 2006

Buoyed by a terrific performance in the FA Cup it was back to the Championship where they faced Leicester City at St Marys. They suffered somewhat of a cup hangover as they were not at their best and yet they should have came away with all three points as they created enough chances but in the end had to settle for a draw. A sloppy opening from the Saints saw Leicester go in front but a wonder goal from Gary McDonald got the Saints back level. In the second half the Saints huffed and puffed but did not have enough to find the winner.

Final Score - Southampton 1 v 1 Leicester

Goals - Southampton - McDonald (42)

Goals - Leicester - Williams (19)

Att - 25286

MOTM - Stephen Hughes (Leicester)

It has been a great spell for the Saints and lets hope it continues for along time to come as they push for automatic promotion.
