sf575
Is it just my game or is there a hell of alot of own goals in fm 09. Please tell me there's gonna be some improvements to the match engine. sometimes its like watching torvill and dean try and play football. I know it sounds as though i dont like the game, i do, its just that i thought all my dreams had came true with a 3d match engine but i think its a start rather than a finished article. Dalimyr
It's fine to me. Are you fully patched? This is the only instance in my game where I've questioned the number of own goals, but from the other 17 games I've played in this season so far, I've only scored or conceded one own goal, from the 31 scored and 10 conceded in total
mista T
Are you playing in the lower leagues by any chance? I have had just one instance of a pathetically high amount of own goals in a French game playing as Cherbourg, I lost 4-1 with all 5 being own goals, although as you go up it seems to decrease. Neopherus
Mikael Chretien scored an own goal today. He got the ball at around 12 yards and just jogged the ball over the goalline.. wtf!
sf575
No i am not in the lower leagues i'm in the SPL ( no jokes about scottish football being the lower leagues ) my first season in the premier with Ross County seriously it seems like an own goal by the opposition almost every other game its bizzare. I am fully patched and waiting like everyone for 9.03.
soapy
There are quite a few - certainly more than I'd expect one team to be on the benefiting end of in a single season - and some of them are really ridiculous. Gomes taking a goal kick that hits Woodgate in the back so hard that it flies into the goal faster than the original kick(?!) is the most over the top I can remember seeing this season. Smithers
That's nothing, my right back literally smashed it into the top corner from 6 yards out, when trying to clear it. True story. Not as bad as when I was 1-0 up against Stoke in injury time and my goalie decided to do a few kick-ups to waste time. Unfortunately his touch wasn't great and he ended up passing it straight to their striker, who scored.
Smallen
I have no problems with it. However one of my mates does, about 10% of goals he lets in are own goals

I know it sounds as though i dont like the game, i do, its just that i thought all my dreams had came true with a 3d match engine but i think its a start rather than a finished article. I'm not going to start an "It's your tactics" thing here, but what sort of defensive tactics are you using? For instance, you defensive line, tempo, things like that all add up and could cause pressure on your defence (i.e. high tempo causing your defenders to panic and mess up). Plus sometimes the match engine has a funny way of interpreting some own goals into making them look like uber efforts. I've never personally had these problems, so there must be a way around it somehow.

mista T
lol, so why are you complaining? Is it because they are scoring so many by themselves your strikers aren't getting any?
Smithers
Happens in real life more often than you'd think, at all levels of the game. Meh, I've been playing competitive football for about 12 years, and have never seen this happen, but whatever. The funny thing was that he was on the left side of the goal (facing it) and obviously was right-footed, so could easily have just put it out for a corner or a throw on the left, but instead he decided to turn right, use his weaker left foot, and smash a suicidal 'clearance'...well I don't know where - he must have tried to smash it against the crossbar or something. (Incidentally have you ever seen that in real football?)
phnompenhandy
Happens in real life more often than you'd think, at all levels of the game. I agree. I'm managing at the top level of the EPL and I do seem to benefit from a high proportion of own goals (as well as conceding more than I'd like). However most are defenders turning low, hard crosses across the six yard box into their goal, which is a common occurrence in real life (Hey, Jamie C ) My gripe is with the paltry amount of direct free kicks I score, even with some of the best dead-ball specialists around in my squad. I never score from corners either - I suspect because I refuse to use the corner exploit.
Damian227
I've had a few blood boiling occasions when defenders are under no pressure at all and turn to blast it past my keeper from 20 yards or so... or a midfielder kicks it back to the keeper, but he just stands there and it rolls past him at 0000000000.1 mph, in which times my bloody strikers could have made it back and stopped it going in.
