  1. Props for actually using a pen/paper, nice to see jotted down notes :-) Some food for thought...

To the tactic, I'm partial to a 343/523 myself and have found a fair bit of success with a front 2 of AF | DLF (s) or PF (a) | DLF (s), with an AM (a) behind them and all 3 set to roam from position, with the two strikers also having get wide selected. I know your Treq is playing well, but it could be to the detriment of the overall front 3 and the AM specifically.
Between the AF pressing the back line and the DLF dropping, the AM is find good room to join the attack in the box and also does good work getting the hockey assists (2nd assist) on goals. That 2nd assist diminishes his rating IMHO.

I also have my central midfielders at the DM instead of CM level, with one a stay at home shielder and the other a further forward/move into channels attack supporter. Does the DM level give more room for the AM or am I just seeing what I want to see? IDK. So my front 3 + two central mids are pretty similar to your 1st tactic and I generally like how they move about and contribute to the attack.

Having good PPMs shouldn't be overlooked either, my AFs have beat offside trap, and pretty much anyone who can contribute offensively has one-two passing, and my AMs and central MFs will have get forward or arrive late in the box.

  2. Don't want to mess with the tactic getting those results too much! :-)

Switch the CF/s to AF or PF/a. If you have a striker with 'likes to beat offside trap' that should help to.

Could try a DLF/s and hope they drop, offering up room for the SS/a to run in behind and maybe get a throughball from the Eng or the BBM.

Maybe another 'simple' change could be to move the SS up  and have two strikers, enables you to move the Engache into the middle and maybe creates more room for the BBM to make runs.

Could do all sorts really - as shown by others - but I'd only try changing up the striker, as it otherwise really does become, how long is a piece of string. And you could tweak your tactic right out of its effectiveness.

  3. Agree with 185cm | 6'1" being the 'acceptable' height, all things being equal. Playing a back 3, I do have one guy who is 180cm | 5' 11" and don't feel it hinders me in anyway. With a back 4 I wouldn't play him.

TBH, I am more concerned about my WB/FB height as some of those guys, while great going forward wouldn't be tall enough to get on rides at Disneyland. For me specifically, Lamptey was a weak link on open play crosses for that reason.

Having a beast of a center half 6'4" or taller is definitely an advantage in attack - especially if they have the balance, anticipation, and a few other attributes to go with it. I've managed to have 3 of them at the moment and they will chip in with a fair few goals over a season.

Good point sounds interesting I'll give that a try actually. What about the 3 CB parings what are some good parings for a 3atb formation?

You need to experiment - as it will depend on the midfielders in front of them and what you do with your WBs/FBs. You also need to think whether you want them involved in the build up or just want lump it into row Z types. For instance, I used Potter's style to build out my tactics, so I used 3 BPDs and play from the back, with a different style in mind that might not be the case.

Further to Ex's comments, player roles aside how do you want to play? If Nott Forest are not super talented, maybe something like Nuno's Wolves teams from 2018-20 (obviously not 21 ha) with a focus on counter-attacking? Or if you are really keen on Tuchel's style, go for it!

Personally I like to read non-FM pieces on tactics to help with what I want to do, as opposed to always thinking in TIs, PIs, duties, etc... those can be applied after having a good think. Replay a stretch of preseason matches over and over and refine as you go or go back to some point in a save in the previous season and play a stretch of games. Unless you are plug and playing, it takes time to see how things go together :-)

The challenge with making one with wingbacks is that those wingbacks will need to be very aggressive so that your system doesn't end up being so defensive. You could make a reasonably good 343 using defensive wingers instead.

What does very aggressive mean? I've been using IWB(s) & WB(s) - with the occasional CWB(s) - for a while now and certainly don't see anything that looks too defensive and my right-side WB(s) is usually amongst my assist leaders, while the IWB(s) can do a tidy job as an extra CM.

With FM21's propensity for blocked crosses, I've not been keen on anything that defaults to byline and/or crossing more often, but maybe there are better mitigating methods that I'm not using.

  6. July '25 and Seb has just turned 23. Got his second Premier League golden boot in 3 seasons and won the PL Young Player of the Year award for the 4th (and I assume final year).

Now I'm at the point where I want to keep him around long enough to see if I can break some PL records with him :-)

No, but barely any player in the squad train the same role they play. I focus on attributes, so some players train the same role, but most of them don't. For example, Bailey has RMD role training.

Does that negatively impact the players performance?

Gotcha - if the squad is playing well and you like what you see I wouldn't worry about it. It's just to explicitly answer your Q, if you want to see that familiarity bar be full green that is a way to do it.

I've got a couple guys I am training as Mezalas and I don't even have that position in my current formation, as like you I liked what attributes it focused on. They might play as an AM, DM, or DLF.

Does it negatively impact them in some way? I don't know, but the results are there, so that's the important bit.

Attacking throw ins! How difficult is it to throw it to your own player? Of course, interceptions can happen but I probably concede around 5 or 6 goals a year from my own attacking throw in. As it happens, they're usually crucial goals too :seagull:

The last thing you want to see whenever you are watching in any of the highlights mode, is a throw-in near the opponents 18yd box.

Does a player engaging in the "Hold Up Ball" action trigger nearby teammates to make a forward run even if they are not set to make forward runs more often?

Stated another way: will players make runs off a role that holds up the ball more than they would off a role that does not hold up the ball, all else being equal? (e.g., a False Nine and a Deep Lying Forward both drop into space, but the DLF-s has the instruction Hold Up Ball while the F9 does not)

It's situational isn't it. And with a player who likes holding up the ball, that situation should occur more regularly, than a player in the same role/position on the pitch who does not have that player trait.

For example, my main DLF-s the previous season would drop to receive passes and the like, per the role; however, this preseason I have a new DLF-s who has the drop deep (different that hold up, but in the same family) player trait and he absolutely shows more for the ball in deeper positions than the other guy.

Could it be Vera is also a natural MC as opposed to Asselin?

    Related:

Is there some obscure requirement to be able to teach players to curl the ball? or is it one of those preferred moves that inexplicably cant be taught?

Because I've never seen that be an available option but I could just be looking in the wrong place.

Thanks for that. I had a look with my other midfielders and I reckon you are correct. That's seems to be the reason.

What lool? This isnt a mitigation, it's literally  not telling your players to "cross more often". If you tell a player to cross more often they will cross even when they think it's not the best option, precisely because you told them to.

A few of the player roles have "cross more often" on by default, lots of people probably don't know this. Whether it should be on by default or not is a separate argument and one inwould agree with.

And I can tell you from experience, the number of chances doesnt increase massively by telling players to cross less, so no that's not why.

Also I'm not an SI employee, I'm literally giving people advice on a problem many have lool, I hope that's ok with you.

Agree to a point on the option for crossing - as you say it's written right on it what that does/doesn't do, absolutely that does reduce the total number of blocked crosses. Although that doesn't improve crossing per say, it just reduces the total number of blocks because your players are attempting fewer. Whether we term in mitigation or not is just semantics and your advice will definitely help folks see few annoying blocks :)

I have not seen any differences from a width (defending, attacking, TIs, PIs, etc...) POV that makes a substantive change though. You can be narrow/wide/have time/not have time and still get closed down.

Funnily enough I think I led the league is cross completion % last season - and saw way more than my share of poorly simulated blocked cross situations - I need to check as my faulty memory could very well be wrong.

For people that are struggling with getting  a lot of blocked crosses, it's likely because the opponents is forcing you wide or you have a tactic that is making you play  very wide. This can be fine but make sure your wingers/full backs dont have the 'Croff More Often' player/role instruction on. Having that off or chosen 'Cross Less Often' the player will look to pass or hold onto the ball if they dont think the cross will work

Sure there are mitigation techniques (just like having to mitigate over the top balls compared to FM20), but the reason there are a lot of blocked crosses is because that ME rendering/use case is how SI is keeping the scoring chances down and preventing a bunch of 6-5 matches. Like last year's 1:1 misses and no cutbacks and whatever it would have been in FM19 and earlier :-)

Fair enough if things need to be fudged in the ME, not all the moving parts in the ME can be ironed out, but telling people it's their tactics? :stop:
