I did not play FM21 despite buying it, so can not say anything about it, but this one here? Oh lord, the moment you reduce your LOE from "Very High" to just "High" you are getting overrun by any team... Imagine, you play against the 20th Aston Villa and 18th Burnley and they have 23 shots on goal... Why? Yes, because you dont play kamikaze 4231 Gegenpressing, while they are doing it... It is just incredible, how every single team can play Gegenpressing and your own CBs with Vision 14+, anticipation 14+ and passing 14+ can not see the DLP and instead play it to the keeper who sends it forward with a hollywood-pass which turns back and provides a free chance for the opponent... Can't remember an FM, where you were forced to play one way, which is very high LOE with aggressive tacklings and just press press press...

Why are you persisting with a video game that is so hugely flawed from your POV, year after year?

Put up with the wonky bits and bugs they don't fix, to enjoy the parts that do work or just leave it well enough alone. Maybe go for a walk and get some fresh air.

Just like the past versions of FM, there are plenty of examples of ways to win without going to extremes, whether you believe it or not.

    xoxo

  2. Still on FM21 (in 39/40 Brighton save) and the vagabond nature of some of the managers is funny.

Pep left City in '23, went to Spain (Sevilla and Sociedad IIRC) then a quick National team stint and is now in his 10th season at ManU.

Klopp has been at Liverpool, Valencia, and now Wolves

Of the marquee managers, I do like to see Zidane, Henry, or Gerrard rock up at a top club, as I know they'll only do worse than whoever they replaced. Gerrard in his second stint at Liverpool just got the sack 20 matches into the season.

The Brodge won the WC with Portugal, so that was something - still largely IRL managers/former players managing around the world, but as they get into their 70s, I am sure that will start to change, especially when they want to have an easy scouting gig. I had Roberto Mancini as one of my scouts for 5 years.

No,no at all i would say that most of goals i concede is like this. But i noticed almost every time bad positioning of my def line especially from DC's.While it seems my defenders are close to opponent they still score against me.Another issue i have and i dont know how to react is when the opponent striker push my def line back..Should i change def line higher so that maybe push him back or try to put my team a bit back so that my team dont leave much space?

Good question - like you I'm not a great decipherer on defense :) but you really need to watch the full match interspersed with comprehensive highlights for defense, to see as much of your movement vs theirs as possible and see where things first break down. Yes eventually they are near your 18yd box, but how did they get there.

I play a simple/balanced tactic, but do have higher line, higher LOE, and more pressure selected. I think unless you are going to play counterattack style, there needs to be some extra oomph over the default. I built out a similar tactic, only using roles and few PIs and saw how that played out for a while. Seemed pretty open at the back, so then I applied those 3 things and saw the defense tighten up. Maybe something that simple is all you need?

Another thing (again I am no expert) is what are you doing specifically to cut off service? I see in a couple examples Wolves were playing long balls, are you looking at their formation roles/stats and man marking their playmaker, if they have one? I will sometimes use my PF(s) and or RPM to man mark DLPs/RPMs or whoever is on the ball a lot for the opponent and that does help too.

If you make a few changes like that and still see a lot of easy cross goals, then pushing out the width, or maybe even looking at your back 4 and if they are deficient in positioning/decisions/anticipation/etc...

    Example of a heavy loss...

In this example i didnt know how to react and i need your opinion...

    1524508519_.thumb.png.b6d3821b0c59d677f4bca10b5d3f996e.png

Here their GK kicked a long kick and found me on the backfoot..no9 headed the ball back to Doumbia,he took the control moved a bit and made that long pass to the back of RWB and they scored...At this point Wolves was playing on cautious so definately was a counter attack against me...BUT personally i dont think i have so much space behind my def line to exploit it..So i think it was a bad anticipation from my WB and also from my player close to doumbia who didnt win the ball there..

    543252310_.thumb.png.a9b9dbb46465bf78391047ce929033f9.png

Again after we finished our attack their GK hit the that long ball again...this time he finds their ST no.12.Although my DC lost the aerial battle who stepped to challenge him.

    1822402806_.thumb.png.e2d0840182235802df12ecb8896065c7.png

So their ST give the ball to Zaracho who runs a bit and make that ball to the gap and they scored...I hold my nerves and thinking is it an individual mistake again?are my Def Line is so high?I dont touch anything...

    186530351_.thumb.png.d43d8709c7b38bbd08b53a817d2ba761.png

In this example i see a total mess..It started from that throw-in and i already see my no.3 which is my LB marking their AMR..why he should go there??i dont have tight or man marking on him..anyway next mess is my dc and dm mark close no.9 and totaly wrong, they dont even have him in front of them..few seconds later

Second after throw-in carroll(no.12) receives all alone the ball and made a run and pass to half space to his team mate..

    1984592924_.thumb.png.bb3cd9b800e669cc3d737e41896761d4.png

Zaracho then runs and cross the ball to left flank to no.7 and of course scores...I mean why my DC(no.6) has so terrible positioning?what is he doing there and leave this huge gap.I understand that he went for cover but......Anyway at this time i changed my mentality to balanced just to drop my team a bit and changed tempo to higher because Wolves even if they played cautious they pressed me,and removed also WBIB.Maybe i should react earlier but i didnt totaly understand whats going wrong.I managed to score but then Wolves moves on positive mentality and it was too late.the game was lost..

Sorry for long posts but i want  to learn from my mistakes and see what im doing wrong..

I hope somebody see this and respond on how you should react :)

Hard to tell in a single screenshot and not the whole movement, but your DC(6) is doing what you'd expect him to IMHO and everyone is covered TBH. It's just one of those things, guy gets a good cross in and the Wolves left winger/left forward attacks the ball while your WB and other DC are likely static and ball watching.

Is this always how team's score against you? If so, then you can change your defensive width to try and reduce crosses and make them battle it out with your 3 man midfield more. Sometimes... well maybe a lot of times... tactic doesn't matter. Some team will have your number, they are on a run of matches with high morale and the like and you're going to get stuffed.

One of my annoyances is players won't be called up to international duty because their CA/PA or rep isn't as big as others. Example, I have an Italian striker (Alessio Rosa) for my all conquering Napoli side. Now, I signed him for £3m from Bari after he scored 30 goals in 40 games in Serie B, this was the first issue, he had two similar seasons and no one was interested in him? Why not? I signed solely for realistic purposes because you'd expect a goal scorer like that in Serie B to be targeted by Serie A clubs?

Over 5 seasons now, he has 104 goals in 140 games for me, he has outlasted and outperformed Osimhen, Esposito, Lucca and is currently my main striker (has been for 3 seasons) despite having lower attributes than all of them. The issue is, he hasn't got a single call up for Italy, not even a mention in the media about it, nothing! But Moise Kean with his 7 goals for Rennes gets called up all the time.

Be thankful for the bias! That's one of the pluses of having players from big footballing nations, they might not get picked even if they are excellent and you can avoid this which just happened on my save :(

    image.png.b2748e229e050b2456ab5762e17c75e9.png

  6. While annoying at times - if you limit the number of 'important players' at the same position and have a good captain it can be mitigated. I would rather it be 'broken' in a more restrictive manner, than in a looser manner, as it is already easy enough to build up a good squad and I see the intention of making it so you cannot just stack your squad with 25 stars and go on your merry way.

One thing I think would help, is if the logic took into account relative matches played/started in relation to the rest of the players, as opposed to what the code seems to do currently, which is just the absolute value of matches played/started.

If I have an outfield player who is in the top 5 of matches started (relative to the rest of the squad) he really shouldn't kick off about not playing enough, especially as a 'regular starter'. For example in a typical 60 match season across all comps, my best outfield players will be in the 35-40 matches range. Anyone in that window should be happy - especially if they have a good wage and we are winning things. If a 'regular starter' is on pace to be in the 20s, then yes come complain and let's see how that plays out.

Never seen this before- I currently have 14 players wanted by other clubs, 11 drawing major interest. Checked Porto, Benfica, and some clubs with similar reps like Lyon, Lille, Sevilla, Monaco, Ajax, and Napoli, and most have 3-5 wanted, with a couple having as many as 7. I get that Sporting are one of the big "development" clubs in Europe, but surely this seems excessive?

    Screenshot 2022-02-06 131625.png

It means you are doing a good job of bringing through talent. AI is largely rubbish at squad building, they let players get old, they get imbalanced, and the like. Typically we humans buy/develop wonderkids and other clubs will want those players.

This is July '39 in FM21, saw the same in FM20. I'm the #1 ranked club in the world and just came off a quintuple-winning season:

    image.png.2a4a4b9a74f02f947140e4b2d426245c.png

And that's after giving new deals/selling a few 'wanted' players. Played Real Madrid in the CL a couple seasons ago and 6 of their starting 11 were former players of my Brighton side

Edit: just grabbed a screencap of the top 15 club's average age as a good indicator:

This is the first comment that has made me curious about moving to 22 from 21.

Blocked Cross Simulator is so very infuriating. As you say, if the first match of a session starts with a handful of those moments, the whole session suffers from the frustration.

From the sounds of it, once you're a decade into FM22 there's nobody under 30 who can cross the ball anyways

I found it hugely annoying at first release, but it did improve by the last patch, and with cross from deep and cross left often selected, I'm typically leading the league with ~22-25% completion percentage and still at the top in attempts. Obviously we'll need to bite the bullet and pony up to see for ourselves.

Yes a lot of 1-on-1s are missed but I think this is a general issue in this year's FM - not necessarily purely down to tactics or players. I've utilised the tactic with Spurs and see a similar style of football replicated. It's a minor gripe really - my team shouldn't have 85-90% pass completion across the board at League One level.

Outside of ME I think FM22 is one of the best yet, but I still prefer the FM21 match engine (even if it's not perfect - still had issues with pass completion rates) - so I went back to that recently.

I'm still on FM21 (and will be at least until the last late winter/early spring update) and have found its ME much more enjoyable than FM20.

Are there a couple specific things, that are rankling with FM22 that made you switch back?

I have seen a fair bit about the 1:1s and also inverted wide players not inverting and staying wide when in possession. Are there other bits that are fundamentally different than 21? thanks!

How much do you want to spend and what resolution are you aiming for?

Oops yes of course, sorry about that, you cannot see into my mind :-)

~$250 USD and HD (1920x1080) - I took a quick look and saw these 2. I see there are 'gaming' monitors with a better refresh, but besides FM and streaming tele I wouldn't use it for anything else graphically inclined:

  11. New laptop delivered - FM21 loaded - and everything works as expected. But I do have a question now:

    - what is a good 24" monitor for FM? I've been using one I brought home from the office 2 yrs ago, it is not the best so I have been watching FM on my laptop, but I'll need to give it back when/if I change jobs in the next while, so will be in the market for a new one. Thanks!

    My personal observation is:

    1. FM22 appears to ship with more bugs than previous versions

    2. The bug forums have less response from SI than in previous years

    3. Internal QA seems to have been reduced

    4. There are non ME bugs repeating / carrying over from the 2 previous versions or more

    5. There needs to be better balancing of future development v resolving current issues

    6. Recurrence of previous issues

There is a good game here but its marred by the number of bugs

Good post :-) And completely agree with your last sentence.

IDK the metrics (bar sales #s of course) for video game software vs business software in which I work, but the amount of tech debt we see totally points to sorting out that backlog of existing issues at the expense of new features.

  13. 44 minutes ago, GOODNAME said:

    Come on

Its ok that there is a bug, but they had 1 year to see this!

My biggest question is how on earth we (the FM community) saw this before them

We didn't. The product ships with bugs (a lot of them).

I learned my lesson with FM21 and haven't bought FM22 yet, hopefully they sort the major issues for the final March patch, if not I'll just stick with 21 for another year.

  14. Are you watching player morale? Is Team Cohesion very good or higher? Does the core of your team (and as you get better eventually everyone) have high determination, teamwork, and workrate? And then anticipation, decisions, off the ball, and positioning? Is it a physical enough team/large enough squad to play 60 matches a season?

If you were beating your club's preseason expectations and had largely seen good form and good play when watching the matches, these items will go further to getting successful results than your seemingly sound tactic.

Nah mate I used two fairly normal aged teams in real life , I used the teams to show what state they are in-game compared to real life squads and the  varying ages that squads use in their national team. You however cherry picked a notoriously old playing national side in Portugal, remember Luis Figo, Deco,Maniche etc. I perhaps will need to make a separate thread for this if people need more evidence. Unlike you , I want players in the game to have realistic caps on average as I play . therefore the international teams for me is quite important. Young players aren't coming through the national teams as they should , like you have already mentioned this is probably tied up to player development somewhat. But I also believe that players aren't retiring from the international scene as early as they should.

I am not not picking here at all , you just have to look through the ages to see something is off.

I have digged in further and looked at the other national teams in game.

National national team of the USA in game - They have 16 players over the age of 30 and 7 players under the age of 30 ( 2 are already 29 years old ) = they have 2 players over the age of 30 in real life.

National national team of the USA in game - 12 players in national team over the age of 30 = they have 3 over the age of 30 in real life.

National Team Of the Netherlands just makes my point facts just look at those ages. You're really telling me that only 1 player under the age of 28 good enough for the national team? 21 players over the age of 28..... = in real life 9 in the current national team.

Sweden - 17 players over the age of 30 and 6 players under the age of 30

Portugal the team  you used as an example - 9 players over the age of 30 in game - 6 in real life. But they have 0 players under the age of 25 in game and in real life they have 9 players under the age of 25.

Seems to me by looking at the evidence that the game severely lacks players between the ages of 18-25 in most national teams. I do not know if this is player development issue or the a.i isn't recognizing up and coming players. But its clearly an issue. Or doesn't international caps mean anything for players in game ? value , ambition , reputation ? For this issue to be just shrugged off.

    Screenshot (29).png

    Screenshot (27).png

    Screenshot (24).png

    Screenshot (20).png

    Screenshot (31).png

It's a pretty long list of shrugged off issues as we all know, but this is worth raising as a bug in the appropriate thread IMHO. At least get it logged and you've done your bit.

I wonder if it is a problem with balancing reputation? It is given too much weight vs actually being any good. The US ok maybe lacking options, but Portugal should be chock full of mid 20s wonderkids, they wouldn't lack options at all for replacing those 33yr olds.

Seems like the HB works better this year than it did last year which is great. I've got the same problem with the winger and the fullback being too close. I wonder whether moving the wingers to the right and left AM slots would solve this? Although that may affect things defensively and obviously the roles are different...

Wouldn't be an isolated 'fix' obviously, but have you tried IWB/W partnership? Whether I am putting the W at the midfield or attacking level, it has worked well for me.

This isn't specifically a 316 thing, just something one side of my tactic always has, but it has worked in my attempted 316 as well.

Stuff like this makes it very difficult to resist rage quitting.

I'm drawing 1-1 away with Man City. I'm happy with the point so I move from my standard tactic to try and see the game out. It's the 94th minute, my mentality is defensive, my defensive line is set to 'deeper.' So why oh why does this happen?

Stage 1- they have a goal kick. My defender are all near the halfway line but they are engaging their strikers I guess so fine.

    1559405754_Defensiveline1.png.58af6883c9126ebf1836647a90b51950.png

Man City play it short and they have a player carry it basically unchallenged into midfield- fair enough, I've dropped my line of engagement too to prevent huge gaps. However my defenders have barely dropped and despite asking them to hold a deep defensive line they are leaving a gaping 30 yard hole in behind them. My entire team is all within about 20 yards of each other.

    1860517252_Defensiveline2.png.60912a49184fecb9cf4cd09fe22409c7.png

So the inevitable happens, Man City play the ball into the giant chasm in behind my defence and grab a late winner.

    505792535_Defensiveline3.png.0ba75b115040153057c8caf8ca260da1.png

I don't mind losing, it happens. But it is incredibly frustrating to have adjusted your tactics to avoid this exact situation only for my entire team to apparently ignore it. This isn't a situation where we got caught on the counter- the team was able to be properly set up when their keeper had the ball but apparently the instructions I've given them don't matter. So frustrating.

Ah but if you're not getting FMed you're not playing FM. I totally get and have shared that frustration - but there is simply nothing you can do when the ME triggers one of these random 'footballing moments' that try and approximate the randomness of a match IRL. The worst thing is that it hopefully doesn't impact momentum and morale for subsequent matches, as that is the real kick in the junk if one of those moments leads to knocking you out of the title chase or puts you in relegation trouble. Hopefully you bounced back the next match!

Whether it's the 90+ min goal or the 2 or 3 goals in 4 or 5 mins, nothing you do with your tactic will prevent them, apart from maxing time wasting maybe for the 90+ stuff. And no I don't think the ME is Skynet and is out to get us humans, you can see the same things in the scorelines in AI v AI matches.
