  1. I'm guessing it's tiredness from your players. You use High Line, High Press, Close down much more often. By 75 minutes they are probably tired.

Try the following if you have a two goal lead, or it's near the end of the game.

    - Reduce mentality to Standard

    - Remove Play out from the back

    - Set When Ball is lost to "Regroup"

    - Mid Defensive line, with Low Block

    - Remove close down "Much More Often"

    - Set wingbacks to either Support or Defend

You can even set when ball is won to "Counter" if you do the above, and you may find you score a few on the counter whilst they attack you. I play in Argentina also, and thins has worked well for me.

Thanks for the idea. Finances are not a problem as I don't want to spend a lot of money on the market. I fatherly prefer a smaller club (or a middle/upper club outside the big 5) with young players with the same nationality as the club.

Try Sassuolo - they are full of young Italian talent

  3. Good luck @Draakon

I played as Ajax in FM19 I think, virtually youth only. I allowed myself to buy back ex-Ajax players, players who had Ajax listed as favourite club, and Ajax CT players as well. Its fun to bring back some older guys for experience mentoring, similar to what Ajax have done with Klaasen, Blind, Huntelaar in recent times.

I also tried to limit myself to similar restrictions on staff (ex-Ajax & Ajax as favourite club guys). Bergkamp was/is a good one. And then to top up any other vacancies, I tried to find newgen staff who had no club history when I could.

Was one of my favourite saves ever.

That sounds like a really fun and exciting challenge all about using the existing squad and developing the B team players and youth.

So, If I am understanding correctly, Spezia don’t start with the embargo 1’e it comes into play in Jan 2022? That means, you can buy some players early on to then develop?

@roas1875yeah exactly. The B team is generally weak, but there are some capable players returning from loan.

Correct about the embargo - if I started over I would probably have made a couple signings at CM, to replace the season one loan guys. Think I had $3m and some wage budget to start. The club turns a monthly profit, so you could probably afford to stretch payment over 24 months

  5. For those of you who enjoy a challenge, give Spezia  a shot.

At face value the squad looks okay, with a prediction of 17th, and a finish of 15th the season previous.

I personally enjoy using the actual squad through until January, and as such my only movement was to sell Jacopo Sala, and sign Matiello from Atalanta for $150k euro. We were overachieving come early December, and had a settled first XI. Matiello decided he no longer fancied being the backup to an impressive Simone Bastoni so he was resold in January for $400k to Salernitana from memory.

As the transfer window reopened I was greeted with a message that "Spezia were under transfer embargo until 31 December 2023". I had agreed a couple of transfers in Kasper Koszlowski for 1.8m, and Fredrik Bjorkan on a free transfer. A closer look would reveal they would join on January 1, 2024. On the field, our form was fine, as we won 10 games on the bounce from mid November into January. We would make the semifinals of the Coppa Italia before losing to Napoli (from memory), and going through a form dip.

Things would pick up again in March, with an 8 game winning streak taking us to 5th places with three games to play. Sadly we would lose all three, and finish the season in 8th, and thus missing out on European football in 22/23.

The transfer window would see some influential loanees leave the club, in Victor Kovalenko, Kevin Agudelo, Ebrima Colley, Eddy Salcedo, Mehdi Bourabia and Rey Manaj. A couple of players have returned to fill the void, and whilst promising, may be a step down in quality. Emil Holm looks to be the pick of the bunch.

We did however turn a profit of 7-8m the previous year, and the board are a dream to work with, having improved Youth Academy, Recruitment, Training and Youth Facilities two times each. Julius Beck is perhaps a promising youngster in the under 18s, and although development was slow, he spent time in the first team to aid his development. The improvements to recruitment saw some potential talents join the Primavera side - and with the embargo in place, the could see some minutes in 2023.

Between Simone Bastoni, and Guilio Maggiore, you have two fine young Italian talents to build around and a side of generally capable young players around them to help keep you afloat until the embargo has passed. I can't recommend this side enough for those who love a challenge, and enjoy youth development.

I have been using a CM-D and CM-S tandem in my midfield and have found that with PI's and PPM's I can recreate more specialized roles. One Thing I have noticed as I use more "Generic" role is that team fluidity seems to go up and I notice players interchanging more to keep defensive shape.

Let's just say it: Covid S***S! Hope you get better....

I hope to read more about this great Russian save!

Agree with this 100% - The more vanilla the roles, the more fluid the shape. Customising the PI's on Support players also aids fluidity from what I've seen

Also, get better @_Ben_ - love this thread. I don't comment much, but I'm enjoying the journey

  7. I play the same system as you with a mostly the same instructions, albeit the roles are different. I have a few thoughts

    - You have two playmakers in your formation, but only two of your Midfielders are really true playmakers in my eyes (I look for Passing, Vision, Flair if i'm a good team - they need to unlock the defense). I would probably switch to one playmaker, although I personally use none. The two most suitable for me are Bastianini, and the Brazilian guy. I put the creative guy in the DM spot as a DM-D, but allow him to be expanisve through PI's, and "Tries killer balls often".

    - Your Striker has "Comes deep to get Ball" but is an AF-A. He's an exceptional dribbler with great Off the Ball. I kind of like him more as an inside forward if you have abother suitable striker. Or he could play as a DLF - S/A.

    - Your LW is a Winger, who is left-footed, with the PPM to "Cut inside from the Left". I think his skillset is a little one dimensional, but if you untrain that PPM, he will at least do what you want ie. Run down the left, beat his man, put a cross in.

I like the Italian CM as a Mezzala, and Katterbach being two footed could make him a fun IWB. Without knowing the rest of your squad, I could imagine lining up like this: GK(d) - IWB(S), CB, CB, WB(A), - DLP (d) - MEZ(a), CAR/B2B/CM(s) - W(a), IF(s) - DLF(s).

This is probably more @Rashidi line of expertise, but I think these roles could play well with that shape, and the instructions you are already using.

  8. Hi @FMSacchi

I'm actually doing the same, although really early on. I intend to run a long save playing in Indonesia as Bali United, they are one of the better teams in the top division, although most teams seem fairly competitive. As such my guys maybe aren't the level of Pique, Alves, Messi etc. So far I'm 3-2-2 after 7 games, sitting 6th of 18, but the last two games saw good wins. Before that I was dominating possession, but making very few chances.

    My setup is this:

    GK - SK(s)

    RB - CWB (A)

    CB - BPB (D)

    CB - BPD (D)

    LB - WB (S)

    DM - HB (D)

    MCR - DLP (S)

    MCL - AP (A)

    AMR - IW (S)

    AML - IF (A)

    ST - F9 (S)

    Mentality: Positive

In Possession: Much Shorter Passing, Play out of Defense, Low Crosses, Work Ball into Box

In Transition: Distribute to CB's, Counter Press

Out of Possession: Much Higher Defensive Line, Much Higher Line of Engagement, Extremely Urgent Closing Down

So we are pretty similar in how we have set up. Changing Alves from Su>At role, and Pedro & Villa from role from IF(s) to new roles made a big difference. The other key was moving a couple players around. My best passer was a natural DM, moved him to Xavi role and my circulation looks a lot better, and I seem to be getting more chances rather than just aimless possession.

  9. @AceAvenger outstanding tactic. I had been on FM18 for a while, but with Coronavirus keeping us indoors I moved to FM20. I generally use a 442 (2DM) variant, and came to the tactics forum to get some ideas how to run it in FM20. Ended up finding this which is pretty much exactly how I like to play the game. The idea was to replicate yours, and work back from there, but it's actually a perfect fit (im using the 1AM, 1ST tactic)

I'm currently playing as Leeds United, but am limiting myself to ex players, players who list Leeds as a favourite club, and Home Grown at Leeds players. Have signed one veteran CB to help with mentoring, he's yet to play, and probably won't. Lost Nohan Kenneh unfortunately but will try buy him back later. Kept everyone else except Gaetano Berardi who had a poor personality.

At this stage, I'm 1st after 10 games (8 wins, 2 draws), and into the fourth round of the cup. Absolute highlight was a 3-0 over Liverpool away in the third round. They used first team squad players, but rested 7-8 of their very best.

Finding the tactic super balanced. Nobody really underperforms, nor does anyone score bags of goals. Will keep you posted, but great work!
