That's what you'd be buying it for. FM's 3D match engine really isn't that demanding.

I think I'd rather pay the £56, which is basically what I'm saving by getting rid of the DVD drive, and just keep a bit of graphics power in the bank - just in case.

Also losing the bigger SSD in favour of the smaller 240 SSD. I think I do need the wireless card and PCS advice says upgrade to AX200, which is the price of losing the LED strip that was on.

Better case in the build also. Plus, and I think this will be very much worth it, 16GB RAM in a 2x8 pair at 3200Mhz instead of standard 2400mhz.

Same AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU.

All in - £821 I'm extremely happy with that!

@Gangor and @Smurf I can't thank you enough for your help. I'm about to submit the build, any problems that you can see?

Can you save by ditching the optical drive and the wifi card? They are both redundant for most people, unless you can't get a cable from your router to your PC. Even then you could get a powerline adaptor set which is not too expensive and more reliable in my experience. Also unless you're going to be installing several AAA games at a time you can probably get away with a 240/256GB SSD. If you're only playing FM the GTX 1050 will play the match engine (from FM20 at least) just fine, though if you're planning on playing other games that require 3D you might consider the 1650 Super if they offer that. The 1650 is significantly worse for only slightly less cost. If you can afford it more RAM is a great idea, but it is also an easy upgrade later.

Edit: Oh yeah, if they offer an option for a higher wattage power supply it would be worth considering, in case you want to get a more powerful graphics card in the future. Also it wouldn't need to run the fan so fast so might be quieter.

There is a 1650 'super' option. It is £56 more than the Nvidia 1050.

    According to this: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1650S-Super-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1050/4058vs3650

    (I think they're the correct gpu's)

The super is 111% better? All down the list it looks head and shoulders above the 1050, surely it's a no-brainer even though there won't be many other 3D games. Gives pace of mind if I see a 3D game tomorrow that I must play?

Not entirely certain what the chappy from PCS was talking about? I've had the quickest of plays to work on a set up and my first draft is the above. It's under budget and I'm now considering upgrading RAM to 16gb and going for a slightly better graphics card than the 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1050 - DVI, HDMI, DP.

Do the other components look ok? The motherboard? Storage? I'm also considering slightly upgrading both the sound card and the cooling? Any point?

Silly question, would the above set up let me hear the sound or do I need a better sound card or additional speakers or something?

Some modifications that I could make....

I probably have maybe £100 extra in my budget:

    Graphics:

    Geforce GTX 1650  +£34

    Geforce GTX 1660 +£122

    RAM:

    16GB +£47

    Storage:

    1tb SSD +£41

    Cooling:

    Frostflow cool 100V2 +£19

    Soundcard:

Creative Sound Blast Audigy FXOEM +£29

    --

Also, I can save £55 by switching from a Blu-Ray to normal drive.

  4. Back again!

I followed a suggestion to email PC Specialist and see if they could recommend a build similar to the Tornado. They say they can't match it and I'd be looking at around £900. Quite odd considering I've found reviews from at least a year ago menaing it isn't brand new and says 'PC Specialist' in the name. Anyway, back to the drawing board.

I think my search is getting quite desperate now. I had an issue where the battery was depleted and would not charge and wouldn't turn on, so I removed the battery (from a laptop) and plug it in directly to the mains with a power lead. Now, it has started randomly losing power and completely shutting down with no warning which obviously is a big concern and extremely frustrating. There's somesort of loose connection in the screen so it has to be at certain angle or it doesn't show anything and also the casing joints are creaking and coming apart. I need a new one!

The Ryzen seems best all round to be fair.

Medion is a better single core rating - but it's marginal!
Single core is important but so is the overall score of the processor

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-8400-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2600/3097vs3243

Plus you'll have more RAM and a better graphics card.

    The list grows!

    image.thumb.png.ad64e5e21360590d729544efc3bb7c5a.png

The pitiful CPU mark for my current laptop shows me I'm doing the right thing by upgrading...

Look at the bottom one! Same graphics card, better processor, less RAM, £114 cheaper! I saw the Ryzen Gaming from CCL didn't have an OS so that's why the price went up.

The catch... Tornado is out of stock. But... I've found the same reailer selling it from their Ebay account. How is that even possible?

EDIT: Scratch that, apparently limited availability means out of stock lol.

EDIT2: How hard is it to do a custom build on PCSpecialist? Tornado was originally from there but now sold by Currys.

  6. @Smurf, I think I'm getting there!

So, I've done a comparison of my current laptop, the AMD Ryzen Gaming and the Medion Erazer X30

    image.thumb.png.3018df1bb583793ea8198822dcf47663.png

I think I've done that correctly? My conclusions; both desktops are a massive upgrade on my old laptop - which was decent but clearly shows why I struggle with 3D.

The Medion's GTX 1050 graphics card is still in "mid range" even though it is quite a way behind the 1660 of the Ryzen. However, you said it will be fine with 3D so I'm not too bothered about that score.

The price difference will allow me to uprade the RAM much quicker which is really the only place that the Ryzen is considerably better? I can also cheap out on monitor and other accessories for now (even begging or borrowing) bringing total outlay to £800 which is a considerable saving on my initial £1000 budget.

I'm going to keep looking and extend my table. I think those are the best options for me from thos two sites but I'd be daft not to check other retaillers.

*EDIT* Apologies I didn't see the AMD one - that's better overall - but it's single core rating is lower.

    They are all good.

You could save more money by going with a 8gb RAM setup and going for a decent graphics card like the GTX 1050.

As you want to be upgrading it as you go along - adding RAM is simple and cheap. And you can change the graphics card later if you need.

For FM the 1050 would be able to play at high settings.

Thank you very much for your help Smurf it is much appreciated. A few follow up questions if I may?

When you say single core, using the AMD as an example, where it says CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz, does that mean the single core value is 3.4GHz? So looking at the following desktop in the product description it says with up to 4.0 GHz clock speed, is that better for FM? It also has "dedicated 4 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti Graphics" with 8gb of RAM. As you say, I looked u the cost of 32gb of RAM and it came to around £175 I think, nice easy upgrade for the future.

What do you think of that one at about £100 cheaper?

  8. Hey all. I'm currently looking at ordering a desktop from one of the following places: Laptopsdirect.co.uk or CCLonline.com ... purely because those two have been recommended to me and they're fairly local.

I'm set on a desktop, I have had a laptop for many years now and want a change. Also, they have all died after 5/6 years rather than become obsolete, if that makes sense. Want something I can now keep for years and years and upgrade rather than buy from scratch again.

Aside from the usual stuff, it will be purely for FM. The only other games I play are older so I don't need to worry about those. It being fantastic for FM is my biggest concern.

I've never been able to play 3D graphics on anything over than lowest settings and this is my number 1 wish for my new desktop - to be able to play on high, even highest settings.

Unfortunately graphics cards are something I just don't understand! All those little names and numbers look the same to me!

As long as the price is below £1000 I'll be happy, especially if I won't need to upgrade anything for a long, long time. I've started looking at a few:

    https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/lenovo-legion-t530-28icb-core-i5-9400f-16gb-1tb-hdd-256gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-90l300kfuk/version.asp

    https://www.cclonline.com/pc/gaming-pcs/elite-pro/ccl-elite-pro-gt-gaming-pc/

The key things that I've been trying to look for so far are 16gb ram, simply because it's better than my old laptop that had 8. That's getting expensive so I balanced that with an i5 processor then just fiddled with the cards, the above ones have GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce GTX 1660 6GB and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB. A lot of GeForce going on there. There's also a similar Ryzen gaming desktop for £80 more, not sure if that is worth it or not.

I'd say the ones over £900 are a little bit too much, I'd need to buy a keyboard, mouse and monitor too. I don't mind going fairly budget with those for now to keep everything under that £1000 budget and upgrade them next payday.

What do you think? Is there better out there for that price bracket? Do I actually need to go so high just for FM's 3D graphics?

  9. Some may have seen my post in GD where I discussed this but after pouring some hours into the editor this db is finally finished! For now!

I have created a fantasy league system for Scotland with clear promotion and relegation from the best of Scotland down to the Highland and Lowland leagues. This is not as extensive as it sounds with only three leagues (H/L are in the same tier). This is because in my opinion Scotland simply has far too many league teams for a nation of its size. This retains the best 32 professional sides with the tiered leagues adding another 40 teams. We have the following:

SPL - Tier One - 16 teams playing each other home and away. After 30 games top four and bottom four split and play each other once more to decide the overall champion and who finishes in the two rlegation places. They keep their points totals from the first 30 games.

Championship - Tier Two - 16 teams playing each other home and away. Top two are promoted and bottom two relegated (no playoffs). The most northerly team enters the Highland Premiership and the most Southernly enters the Lowland Premiership.

Highland and Lowland Premierships - Tier Three - Two leagues of 20 teams playing each other home and away. A single team is promoted from each into the Championship.

Scottish Cup - For the league sides only. 32 teams are drawn into 8 groups of 4. These extra 6 games (plus potential playoff games) brings up the number of games to ease the loss of revenue from shorter leagues. Scottish teams cannot afford to lose any more money! The group winners and runners up procede to the last 16 after Christmas. Only the final is played at Hampden.

Amateur Trophy - For the 40 Highland and Lowland sides. With no League Cup I could afford to raise the reputation and prize money for the Amateur sidesto hopefully make it a big deal. 40 teams are in 8 groups of 5 (8 games) with the group winners progressing to the quarter-finals. The finalists get their big day out at Hampden.

That sounds absolutely amazing man, great work, can’t wait to get in about it!

Getting a bit annoyed with how competitive the Scottish Premier League is. Was excited by the prospect of a strong Rangers challenge and the addition of an extra European competition potentially helping the Hibs and Aberdeen’s of the league kick on.

I’ve just started my fourth season and I’ve lost three times domestically (only once in the league). That, incidentally, is not a brag as I am first to admit I’m not at all good at the game. My only notable result in those four seasons being beating Inter Milan home and away to get to the last sixteen of the Europa League where I was rather expectantly leathered!

I know it’s early doors yet, I just hope the teams around me start to improve as it’s really limiting the joy.

Thanks! It's nearly finished, I'm just testing and trying to sort out the last remaining complications as we speak!

I'm hoping my db will improve the challenge somewhat because as you say it gets too easy really quick. I'm hoping that by playing a few more easier teams, it will keep the chasing pack winning thus increasing morale and points. Then the 4 way championship play-off should be tight and entertaining. Still, the main challenge usually comes from the human making it harder by imposing set rules by themselves, such as giving youth a chance or transfer policy. My db (I'm really not trying to plug it) will force you to have a few more homegrown players in your squad. It might not make a blind bit of difference!

  11. Hi guys good to see a bit of discussion! Yes Connell is definitely on my radar. I've seen in some saves he can be sold for silly money if you play him and develop him so he must have good potential 3 in midfield opens up that extra opportunity for him. Thanks. Can't wait to read about your save!

The reason I've been quiet is because I'm busy making a fantasy Scottish DB before I properly begin my game. You can read all about it here:

It won't be long before it's ready and I'll be posting!

  12. I'm nearly at a workable league system. It's not quite how I imagined it but it's looking pretty close. I'll come back to creating more leagues below the north/ south split when I've more patience so I can include teams like Craigmark Burntonians!

Final jobs are squad and matchday rules; transfer rules; create the cups and decide on the big one.... do I include Summer football??????

  13. Thanks for your reply @sporadicsmiles

I'll have a go the next time I'm on. I've set a loose boundary for Highland/ Lowland to Perth which is a little more North than Glasgow and Edinburgh. So I've only set the south boundary for the Highlands and the North boundary for the Lowlands, all the other boundaries are blank. The issue is though that there are lots and lots of teams either central or South but not many at all in the Highlands. If a Lowland team is placed in the Highland league they could rack up some crippling travel costs.

Working so far I have SPL - Championship - then a Highland/ Lowland split league. 2 Teams are relegated from Championship and 1 team is is promoted from High/ Low. To be honest I may save myself a headache for now and extend those divisions to 20 teams and just fill them with the 20 best teams from the HIghlands and Lowlands.

  14. Hi all. I've run into a sticky situation and I can't seem to get my head around it.

I want to create a league system that splits into north and south after the second division.

    I've created the following leagues:

    1. SPL

    2. Championship

Then I want it to split into seperate Lowland and Highland leagues which are seperate entities if that makes sense. 2 teams will be relegated from the Championship and 1 team will be be promoted from each of the Highland and Lowland Premierships.

Lowland Premiership then Lowland Championship and then Lowland League One

Highland Premiership then Highland Championship and then Highland League One

Highland Premiership will relegate to Highland Championship then to Highland League One and stop there.

Lowland Premiership will relegate to Lowland Championship then to Lowland League One and stop there.

Getting all sorts of errors so I've stripped it back to just SPL then Championship and I'm valid again.

  15. Regional Pyramid. This needs a post in itself because it is quickly becoming a problem.

As mentioned above there are 208 teams and I need to create a fair pyramid for these. I think for the sake of my sanity that I need to cull this number somehow.

If I take Cove Rangers from League 2 and put them back in the HIghland set up I can combine the 18 HIghland teams and 14 Junior North Premiership sides into two tiers of 16 - done.

Now I have 9 League 2 sides plus Lowland (and regional second tiers plus Junior West and East. A total of 160 teams. Too many. If I lose the lower division teams from these (EoS, NoS, then lower Juniors) that leaves 57 teams. 3 leagues of 16 is 48 teams meaning I want to lose 9 more (those pesky L2 teams). I'll do this on reputation alone.

So to recap I'll have the following league system all with 16 teams each:

    SPL

    Championship

    Highland                                                    Lowland

    Highland Second                                                                               Lowland Second

                                                                                                                                              Lowland Third

Edit: Thinking outloud again here, if I can find one more Highland Tier it will A) be symmetrical and B) will have a perfect number of teams for a straight knockout Scottish Cup...

  16. Hi guys. I’m using the lockdown period to make a start on creating a new Scottish pyramid league. I was inspired by the amazing @LewisCumming who shared a tweet with a reconstruction proposal which looked fantastic. There were 14 teams, it retained 4 Celtic vs Rangers fixtured per year and was very play-off heavy to make it full of exciting fixtures. This proved to be a little beyond my FM editing skills! So, I’ve used my time wisely and set about researching some semi-serious proposals and came across an article from The Celtic Star featuring a fan idea that was at least recognised by David Longmuir – before he was axed. The jist of this set up was two professional leagues of 16 teams with an accessible pyramid below including League 2 teams, Highland teams and Lowland teams in a regional set up. Interesting, very interesting. 30 league games aren’t enough for most teams to survive on as revenue is already limited in Scotland but this was rectified by revamping the League Cup. I think that I can combine the two ideas and come up with a workable solution but if you’re interested and have some ideas to chip in with then please use this thread to state your opinion – I’m open to help, constructive feedback, anything at all really!

    SPL – Top tier.

16 teams play each other twice for 30 games. After 30 games top 4 teams carry their accumulated points into a Championship league split, paying each other home and away. This keeps the presumed 4 OF games per season for TV and creates a scenario where Celtic and Rangers could play each other home and away within days to decide the title. Potentially adding in a banana skin tie to Pittodrie or Easter Road in between.

Relegation – undecided between a play-off with second tier promotion hopefuls or a straight relegation. If play-off then bottom 2 would be automatic relegation with third bottom entering play-off. I also like the idea of the bottom 4 teams splitting like the top 4 and playing each other again to see who goes down. If you lose your head to heads then you can have no complaints. But accumulated points mean that rest of the season still means something.

    Championship – Second Tier

16 teams play each other twice for 30 games. Potential play off with SPL side. Can also use the SPL championship league style play-off to stretch out a few games. A bit to think about here.

Relegation could be straightforward, the bottom two teams are relegated and will either play in the highland or lowland league set ups below. Howver my difficulties with the regional pyramid may change this.

    Regional Pyramid – Third Tier

Where to begin… Ideally, I’d like every Scottish team to have a chance of being promoted to professional football and bring everybody together into one league system. But there’s just so many clubs! I need a system for 10 League 2 teams, 17 Highland, 16 Lowland, 16 South Scotland, 16 East of Scotland. The we get to the junior game… West Region 63 teams, East 38 and North 32 clubs! That’s a total of 208 teams! Then there’s the problem of geography, there’s a massive bias towards central Scotland. How on Earth do I solve this problem? I’ll have a second post for this conundrum!

League Cup – Only for SPL and Championship clubs. 32 teams in 8 groups of 4 play each other home and away to guarantee 6 more games per season (plus one SC). The 8 winners progress to the Quarter Finals.

Scottish Cup – Unchanged as much as possible.

Regional Cup - Amateur Cup featuring all teams below the Championship. Hopefully a big deal.

Final curve ball… potential summer football in Scotland (and beers at games!)
