  1. Cheers @sporadicsmiles + @BadAss88.

I really have high hopes that Sassuolo are a great fit for this play style.

Interesting role about CM slots and roles/duties switch around - may trial this out in some easier games.

In all honesty however, the amount of bureaucracy and contracts/loans etc. in any Italy save is putting me off. I much prefer to have concise squads with loans only used for developing younger players. Italy feels like hours worth of contract negotiations and loan management for players that haven't played for the club in years and are in their mid to late twenties (and beyond). Does this not put anyone else off managing in Serie A/B/C? Love the league in real life but not sure I can hack the bureaucracy!

  2. Very interesting - hadn't thought about the role like this and I actually think I have just the player to play this role.

What do you reckon @sporadicsmiles to Locatelli in this role?

Originally had him in that DLP (S) slot in the LCM slot but I think he definitely has adequate defensive stats/aggression (also trait of Dive Into Tackles - not the worst).

Doing this would also free up the DLP (S) LCM slot for Lopez (who I originally had earmarked for the bench):

Lopez excels in the creative/passing aspect of the DLP (S) role in LCM but I was concerned he lacked a bit of bite/defensive nous. A very talented player though, it did feel like a bit of a shame to have him on the bench.

I think I might go for Locatelli as DM with Lopez at DLP (S) on your suggestion @sporadicsmiles - much appreciated.

Just for full run through, here's Traore - the play who will be starting as our Mez (S) in RCM:

I have really high hopes for this young core trio of midfielders - I think they offer a nice balance between defending, creativity and dynamism (all whilst being solid players in terms of first touch, passing, vision - cultured footballers lol).

    Cheers

  3. Thank you @Jaye and @Experienced Defender very much for the advice.

Completely on board with the points and it definitely has made sense of a few bits I was stuck with.

So, here's what I'm left with:

    325272960_Screenshot2020-11-25at14_23_23.thumb.png.7a058af36f1cdec85c9f5c168d0d5cec.png

In terms of mentality - I think Balanced makes the most sense for most matches/as a default. Against weaker oppositions, I think I may up this from kick off to Positive. Against notably stronger opposition, I think I will try to tweak the roles and tactical set up as opposed to just whacking the mentality down to Cautious.

In terms of PIs, the only ones I have are:

    • DLF/IW/IF (Front 3) - Close Down More, Mark Tighter
    • DM - Pass Shorter
    • WB (Left) - Cross More Often, Take More Risks - He is the more creative of the two fullbacks and I want to overload that left side
    • WB (Right) - Pass It Shorter, Cross From Byline - He will have a lot less to aim at if he crosses early/too regularly, so I want to encourage him to play a shorter passing game and to only try cross it when he's situationally in a strong position (byline)

I think I've applied all the understandings/points above alongside my own original plan. Anything I'm missing?

Going to start the save off properly tonight and will of course watch/review/tweak accordingly. However, I think this tactic fits my original brief.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

  4. Hello!

I want to create a 4-3-3 system with an emphasis on verticality and intent (not just possession for possession's sake).

    The key ideas here are:

    • A narrower shape
    • Both wide forwards to cut inside
    • Overload the left-hand side (freeing up the right-hand side to attack the space and get into good positions in-front of goal)
    • Wing back overlapping on the left balanced with a full back on the right playing more conservatively (but still getting to the byline when the right situations present themselves)
    • A simple outlet at the base of the midfield to recycle play in possession and patrol the backline out of possession (aggression/positioning being key here)
    • Out of possession, I want to engage the opposition high up the field and force them into long balls where possible
    • I want to play an offside trap

So, with this in mind, I'd be really interested if the following system makes sense to people and whether there was areas to rethink/improve/change.

    In terms of shape/roles:

    DLF-A

    IW-S                                IF-A

    DLP-S      MEZ-S

    BWM-D

    CWB-S    CD-D     BPD-D      FB-S

    SK-D

Do these roles make sense/mesh well in people's opinion? I think they do but have a few points of concern/questions:

    • Will having a DLP slow down play and cause us to delay more in possession? I think the benefits/role outweighs this concern but perhaps playing without a designated playmaker helps my idea.
    • Is a BWM-D necessary, perhaps a DM-D does the job just fine. I just think the BWM-D has a bit more aggression/bite out of possession which is how I envision the role (I also have a transfer lined up to fill this role well in this save).
    • How well suited is a MEZ-S/IF-A? To my understanding they can co-exist just fine, but I'm wary of them eating into one another's spaces. Does the MEZ being on support whilst the IFA being on attack help avoid this issue?

Without having the game in front of me, the tactic would be set up as so:

    MENTALITY:

    • Balanced or Positive - Really not sure on this one TBH

    IN POSSESSION:

    • Slightly Narrower Shape
    • Pass Into Space
    • Play Out From Defence
    • Overlap Left
    • Work Into Box / Be More Expressive? - In the past I've had success with combining these two instructions, but again perhaps overkill?

    IN TRANSITION:

    • Counter-Press
    • Counter? - Does this fit my goals/tactic? I think with pass into space and the wish to play with purpose it maybe does, but perhaps it's unnecessary and best left unselected?
    • Distribute to Centre Backs

    OUT OF POSSESSION:

    • Higher Defensive Line
    • Higher Line of Engagement
    • Prevent GK Short Distribution? - Is this overkill?
    • More Urgent Pressing? - Would a split block not be perhaps more suitable with the front five players?

In terms of individual player instructions outside of their pre-set defined instructions from their roles, I was thinking the following would be required:

    • IW/IF on the wings: Sit Narrower
    • DLP: Stay Wider in Possession
    • CWB: Cross More Often/Take More Risks
    • WB: Pass It Shorter/Cross From Byline

Any feedback would be much appreciated. Would/will provide screenshots, just not currently able to crack the game open!

    Thanks

  5. CC: @Experienced Defender - This all makes complete sense and I like the idea of adjusting width in response to opposition. Will probably kick games off in standard and then adjust outwards if the opp. is raining in the crosses and overlapping down the wings.

CC: @zlatanera - This is a very fair point and thanks for sending. Top of my list for first season transfers is actually a mobile left-footed CM with high work rate, off the ball, positioning, etc. to run that carrilero role.

I think tonight I will post one final breakdown of everything before tucking into the season ahead. Haven't had masses of time this week.

    Cheers!

  6. Right, after some fiddling around/back-and-forth. We've got the following together:

    554925770_Screenshot2020-04-07at21_37_08.thumb.png.1b5ad8936be9d96892a31dc19f36f2da.png

I've added low crosses to encourage cut backs - partially because I now have three CMs with two outer CMs taking wide positions (especially Traoré).

I am going to try a front three split block w/ more urgent pressing and heavier tackling. I will also set up the AM to specifically mark an opposition's DM.

I am wondering whether I need to encourage the team to defend wider when out of position? Just to encourage the outer CMs to help the WBs with pressing/marking, especially when teams play wide forwards with wide full/wing backs overlapping. Does defend winder tick that box?

I think we're getting somewhere! Really appreciate the help @Experienced Defender / @frukox!

The idea is to add a bit more pressure, that's all. But if you think/feel it could be too risky, then you don't have to include the mezzala in the split block.

That makes sense - I actually think the player I have in the Mezzala slot (Hamed Junior Traore) has the right makeup to get involved with more urgent pressing - good work rate, off the ball, decisions, aggression.

In terms of my principles, I do wonder whether a 4-3-1-2 may in fact be better suited to my goals:

The principles I want to build my tactic around:

    • Vertical (shorter) passing between the lines as opposed to passing the ball for the sake of it
    • I want my players to spread out and occupy different vertical and horizontal lines
    • High defensive line w/ offside trap - utilising my fast, agile defence
    • I want to utilise the creative left-footed players at my disposal - specifically Rogerio and Berardi - so I am to have creative, roaming roles on the left whilst my right hand side move up and get into channels
    • I want to play on the front foot

I think potentially getting an extra body in the midfield may improve my chances of achieving my principles. This of course comes at the cost of losing a centre half but having three across the middle in the CM strata would allow us better coverage of the centre whilst also allowing the outer CMs to take wider positions and support the transitions with the WB.

    I was thinking:

    image.thumb.png.6bf535bc4f2380812b415c12e1a59091.png

Please ignore the fact this is Pescara as opposed to Sassuolo. I am specifically thinking about the players at my disposal at Sassuolo. I think I would invert the above as well to have the CWB and DLF on the left, Mez etc. on the right.

If I was looking to build around the 4-3-1-2 shape as opposed to the 5-2-1-2 to achieve my goals, would those roles be well suited?

I have doubts whether a poacher works, or whether in fact an AF would be better.

I also think that Sassuolo have a decent BPD in Chiriches at the RCB slot, so would look to incorporate him there.

Really would appreciate any advice @Experienced Defender

  8. Amazing - thank you very much both for the advice.

Will look into removing offside trap / rearranging the defensive duties. I think Chiriches works just as well as a stopper - albeit not the most aggressive player which would help a bit.

Regarding the split block - I actually already had this in place just minus the mezzala. What is the thinking behind including the mezzala @Experienced Defender? Is that on account of that player occupying a higher starting position, that places him in amongst the AM(A) anyway?

Really appreciate the advice both @frukox and @Experienced Defender!

  9. Hello!

Really would appreciate any help with setting up roles for my Sassuolo team.

First season. I think the 5-2-1-2 gets the best out of my squad whilst adhering to the principles I want to stick with.

    573968957_Screenshot2020-04-05at19_36_12.thumb.png.d37d1ab8460f3519abb596fc56a63543.png

    Ignore the empty bench.

Do the roles look balanced and suited to the style of play? I would appreciate any advice.

I am unsure about the defensive roles but I am trying to make sure I play to their strengths - especially with regards to preferred foots. Also, Chiriches is a great passer, so I want any defence line creative onos to be on him.

Please rip to shreds and explain anything that looks odd. All help much appreciated.

    Happy Sunday.

Here's the tactic as I have it atm:

Giampaolo's style of play aligns closest to the Vertical Tiki-Taka preset if that helps.

I am also sadly in same boat. Really interested in the formation. Think I understand Giampaolo's principles etc.

The above formation to me looks near enough spot on.

The only way I've got any success (even then not great success) is by moving away from the principles and trying to generate activity down the wings with the wingbacks bombing on. Next to nothing created by my AM - even when he appears open to slot in the AF.

Would be incredibly interested to see anyone who's got success out of playing a Giampaolo/Sarri (at Empoli) style 4-3-1-2.
