You should look to have him supporting attacks so you have a central player who can unlock the opposition defence. I actually think he could play as a regista with Reitz going on a defend duty - this should help cover Tymon's runs as well with Ritz being on the left side of midfield.

This + swapping roles and duties up top was gold.

Also, another very satisfactory point is all the front line (subs included) are playing well in the system, with goals and assit spreaded among the team.

Below the standard tactic I've ended up.
Poacher occupies the central defense while suprisingly applying quite a lot of pressure on the backline when no in possession ( I think to recall Poacher role was much more passive in defense in previous FMs)
BBM and IWa create a nice overload on the right side, IWa + "Stay Wider" was a successful gamble ! Less useless crosses but still crossing when decent opportunity arise, while skinning his fullback in one to one situation (Poacher and BBM occupying the central defender)
Left side, IFs is dragging both his fullback and central defender with his high dribble and speed, opening up the flank for an comfortable cross from the WBa running up the field. And with no overlap TI, not wasting a good opportunity to beat his fullback and go through goal (instead of waiting for the WBa).
Regista at DM position was a bit too crazy, got scored against 5 times in 4 games during the experiment! but DLPs revealed to be very  good and balanced in the tactic. With BBM supporting the Poacher and right IWa + BWMd holding the fort center/leftcenter, the midfield trio is SOLID.

Very very happy, thank you again for the hint and suggestions @silentwars

Now for the contextual changes :
    - when opposition has no quick forwards, I move the block up (Higher DL, Press GK, CounterPress). When up by two goals and with 20-15 minutes to go, I remove the counter press (and maybe lower the DL)
    - if wasting chances, I move to Positive but slower tempo + Work Ball Into Box.
    - If they are tough, play through my press and/or have quick forwards, I simply go Midblock and change left-fullback to WBs.
    - When one or two goals up with 20-15 minutes to go, I remove "distribute quickly), do some time wasting, then width to fairly narrow. (additionnal time, I max time wasting and go "more disciplined")

  2. Hey @silentwars,  thank you for the input and detailed response !

    Got a lot more questions ! :D

    @Cassius

Dunne as a NCB would concern me as well as he's just going to aimlessly lump the ball forward, I'd be tempted to have him as a CB and use PI's to take fewer risks.

The NCB on Dunne was due to him being inept with the ball while being great at defending. I'll try with CD (+less risky passes), hopefully things will go right !

    Il y a 15 heures, silentwars a dit :

    @Cassius

Both of your wide players in the attacking third are discouraged from crossing and you don't have any real creativity in the midfield - this is going to lead to a lack of chances been created.

I'd also look for an advanced playmaker in the transfer window, as you lack creativity in the final third.

Would not Warrington handle the creativity duty (instead of looking for a new player for APs)? Attributewise is quick decent I think (passing/vision 14, anticipation/composure 13). I put him at DM because he is very sound defensively while being only bang average offensively (dribble/finishing/otb). My idea was to have Warrington picking the right pass (to the WBs attacking on the flanks or into space to any of the three forward above), with Browne in BBM (+GFF PI) arriving late would be a second wave attack and Reitz patroling/covering for the Flank players attacking on the left.

If it was my save I'd switch Bell to the right side as a winger on attack.

I thought about this but I'm a bit worried of him just making super poor crosses on repeat as the role as "Cross more Often" (Bell has only 11 at crossing). Would playing him as IWa (with stay wider) make sense here to avoid him crossing so often ?

    Il y a 15 heures, silentwars a dit :

Tymon is a good crosser so add overlap left so the players are looking for him and he can deliver high quality crosses for your forwards.

Make total sense ! him and Ashby are my only two decent crossers in the team. Question though : with Zuriko speed and technical abilities, wouldn't that be clipping his wings? would no-overlap but IFs (+stay narrow) X WBa work as an alternative ?

  3. Hello everybody,

After 2,5 season at Valenciennes (France - Div1) and performing pretty well, I've been offered a job accross the Channel at Bristol City (England - Div2).
The team is not half-bad, some decent players, and after 7 league games in the season we are doing OK...but my power trio s*cks and I don't know why/how to improve them.

In the last 5-6 games, the quality of the offensive trident (433DM, see below) is not there and as a consequence results are getting hard to get. We average an xG of only 1,18 goal per game (and 0.72 goal against). Three of our five victories in league came from late minute goal from the midfielders...

I recon they should be performing better, and I guess I'm doing something wrong for them to be so mediocre. Any input/advice to improve the situation is much welcomed. I don't care losing (some) games, but I would like at least for my forward to give it a decent try !

  4. Hey people;

    So...thank you all for the tips and advices. Changes I've made ;

    - Higher tempo
    - moved the AP on the left and the IW on the right to the WM strata
    - changed the role of the striker to Complete Forward (thanks @kandersson) with duty "attack" or "support" adapting along the games), despite him having very mediocre passing, vision, decision and aerial/strenght attributes...

    Well, it worked wonders :

It seems like lowering everybody on the field (wings and striker) + playing at higher tempo had tremendous effect on his delivery. Now scoring opportunities are way more diverse, while having the striker scoring sometimes by getting behind the defense, sometimes just with a quick 3m rush backward/onwards for a swift tap-in. Main lesson learned here for me : the movement of a role, within a given tactic, is way more important than the attributes marked as key for that role. 🤷

  5. il y a une heure, kandersson a dit :

Seems a pretty solid formation, not sure if your striker is just missing chances or he doesn't get many chances to score?

Generally I don't like Poacher for a lone striker in a 433 (or in any one-top formation without AMC) as he risks to become too static and isolated, maybe try a more dynamic role like CF/DLF or even AF. Also would change something on the right flank to add more width and variety, like a classic winger instead of IW.

Thank you for the advice !

Considering my striker low ratings in passing and vision, I don't think DLF nor CF would really suit him (or does it?). But willing to try AFa and Winger (a).

However, by having the striker as AF (so, moving much more into channels) and a Winger (a) instead of IW(a), wouldn't this result in having very little attacking thread inside and in front of the oppisition box ?

  6. Hey people,

I'm on FM21, going into my second season with Bristol in English 2d tier. Quite happy with the team of players I have, I am however quite disappointed with my start striker, Adam Armstrong.
With 2 goals in and a rating of 6.81 in 10 games, I feel like he should be doing much better considering his attributes, the category we are playing in and our xG rating.
Despite being top of the league (we were considered play-off contenders), the score lines are often disappointing.

This is the tactic I'm currently using (and PIs) :

To those of you who have yet to try a regionnaire save, I highly recommend it as it stops you from signing players which you/other normally gravitate towards and provides a nice challenge.

One question : how did you do the filtering?

I guess you did not enter each city of Aragon manually in the search tool, but there is no "Kingdom of Aragon" In the nation/region filter neither. 😁

I'm currently undergoing a Málaga save trying to sign almost exclusively Spaniards, but this thread really makes me want to switch to Andálucian focus.

I'm curious on what you guys think about forcing opposition outside and defending narrowly/compact. I feel like by allowing your opponents to cross the ball more, its harder to defend against headers since they've buffed crossing and heading in the game. I'm playing with a defensive 442 Burnley that struggles with winning defensive headers. I've tried to move my defensive width to standard but then we get killed by quick forwards getting behind the defenders and through balls kill us. What do you guys think?

I use 99% of the time Standard Defensive width. Unless the oppponent has amazing longshot takers × super bad crossers, narrow width gives out too many opportunities, event with towering and top central defenders

Your tactic looks great in both FM and IRL. I've had my greatest results from using a wide 4-3-3 similar to yours.

Yeah ! If you have the players for it, I found it really performing without being a OP tactic/breaking the match engine (which is important for my enjoyment)
Winning PL on the last season was a bit of a luck (80 pts, lowest of the modern PL era since Man Utd 2000/2001 !) but I'll take that I try again this week.
And the big bonus is : despite games against top side being tight, most games/goals are fun to watch !

  10. il y a 12 minutes, De Nile a dit :

Iif you mean improving the amount of CCC/HC, apart from the DLP I don't think he is doing poorly considering he has 17 goals in 24 games in PL.

Yeah, that's what I meant. The things is, from what I see, more often than not he tend creates his own chances (by taking on two players are having a cheaky shot from an impossible angle) rather than having CCC/HC served on a plate for him.

I think the overal roles upfront and in the middle make sense, I was wondering though if :
    -  playing him as
Raumdauter role would allow him to find better space ? I already have a "roam from position" PI active for him though, so maybe what would happend would just be him disappearing from the game and/or not helping defensively ?
    - changing the right-back from FBa to WBs. Maybe by having the right-back pushing up later on, the opposition defense will pay less attention to the right side ?

But yeah...the tactic works fine, it's just a question of getting 100% from it (which my turn hard games against top side into wins more over than not!)

  11. Hi gang !

Season 10 in my FM21 save, I'm having a fairly successful time (for once) with a 433DM Low-Block (yes, you read that right).

I'm really happy with our defensive record, quite happy with our offensive record...but I feel like could/should do better.

One of the areas where I cannot seem to fully unlock the potential is my IFa.  I thought the tactic was really well setup to allow him clear cut chances, but he does not seem to get as many opportunities as I expected...instead, my IWa (not as good offensively) seem to get some more regularly.

Below the main tactic (with a split block ; changind at time the FBs and CMs roles against stronger opponents) :

By far my three most expensive/talented players are the 3 forwards. The three of them are superb, and I thought IWa/DLFs/IFa would be the most efficient way to unlock Borisov, as right wing IFa, which I expected more goals from :

I'd like to try this tactic, I'm a 4-4-2 hardcore fan but would like to change as I haven't used 4-3-3 since FM20 (I think) and this system of yours intrigues me. And so I wanted to ask you what are the PIs you mentioned in your post and if the split press is applied by all five front players or just the three most advanced and only one between Mez and B2B.

No problem ! here you go :

    MAIN PIs :

    - RB : Stay Wider ; Run Wide with the ball => this player will be one of the main assist provider and the main out wide player of the team, it is essential that he got both excellent crossing + speed and stamina to recover to his position

    - LB : Cross from Deep => the idea is here to avoid the player going all the way to the opposition byline, as he will have less cover on his side (IWa+Mez) than his mirroring partner on the right flank. He will still get all the way up there if the team happens to end in a static stance, but as in this case the opposition is pinned in their own box, it will be less of a risk

    -
Central Midfielders : if I'm giving out too many freekicks to the opposition early game, I remove the TI get stuck in BUT add tackle harder to my two CMs. This is the place on the field were I don't want to be to soft. Ideally, if any of your two CMs has a good long shot, I'll add shoot more often. According to the combination, the most advanced midfielder will also have more urgent pressing (eg: On a Mez/B2B combination, the Mez will have more urgent pressing)

    - LW : stay narrower ; more urgent pressing = > I want him to link up easily with the DLFs and avoid DLFs to be too isolated. The more urgent pressing is part of the split block strategy of course!

    - RW : stay narrower ; more urgent pressing => same as above. In case that I am using a less roaming CM on his side (CMs or BWMs), I will also add roam from position to allow him more freedom and spice up the thing on that side

    - DLFs : more urgent pressing ; tackle harder => split block again, with an additionnal tackle harder to hassle the opposition with a little more needle.

If you need more info, let me know ! hope it works for you !

  13. Oof, some heated minds on this thread :D

While I cannot vouch for "extreme"(passive?) low block, "standard" low block have been working well for me since late FM19.

However, this required some intense work to understand the game mechanics, ideal players profile, tactical interpretation, etc. (on this forum, I've made maybe two or three topics back on FM19 which testify of it !)
Since then, and while depending on my mood and/or the squad I end up with, low blocks 433 or 442 I've been my go to.
Again, only if I have a squad at least capable of doing an above average job at it.

On my current journey-man (S09), I'm second season in charge in my current club and had 3 transfer windows to get in players that will work best with the tactic.
While having superb team in in my eyes, media prediction was still mid table and the usual suspects (Liverpool, Man City, etc) have dream teams compared to mine.

This is what I mainly use :

Simple, isn't it ? There is some PIs to perfectly tweak it, and it's not a "passive low block" (split block PIs and Get Stuck TI).
I will go like this for most games. If the opposition is much stronger and/or I feel we are too adventurous on the first 10-15min (I play comprehensive highlights), I would tweak the tactic with one or multiple changes according to what I see :
    - RB to WBs
    - Lower tempo one notch
    - BBM to CMs/BWMs
    - MEZs to BBMs
    - Defend/Attack narrower

These are the results so far :

Top teams are still hard foughts games as you can see, but we are fighting for the title while we were supposed to be competing for the 9th-6th position.

The key point I think is this :

    Le 10/01/2022 à 15:33, Rashidi a dit :

[...] you need the right players to make a tactical system work and low blocks are viable on FM,  They are more challenging to use, because you need to be prepared to defend, get mentored by Allardyce and get a stiff drink.

While you don't need 5 stars players to make a low block work, you do need a specific kind of player profiles to make it work.

Yes, yes, I know. High-Pressing mid/high block are the way to go if you want to steam roll your save. But in my eyes, these are like playing Stealth-Archer on Skyrim :D  when it's too easy -even more after all when wonderkids newgens start to blossom- where is the fun ?
(I also limit my self to very minimal use of South American "OP" regens...call me crazy)

Can’t find it, would you help please?
wow, after a long poor run of form, all this talking paid off. 1:4 away victory against Bremen. A relief…

Had to dig the old FM19 and sabotage my team for a game lol

Bear in mind that sometimes the game won't let you warm/fine at 6.5 but starting at 6.4 instead (I guess there is a decimal under the hood explaining this. 6.54 and 6.45 will both show 6.5)

Also, back on the ol' FM19, we had less options than now. Only "Warning", "1 week" and "2 week" fines.

This is what you should see :

    Aucune description disponible.

Glad that the talking is working ! I have a strong feeling high moral and constant monitoring/talk of player good AND bad deeds (on both training and performance) greatly help getting the best out of each player. Hence over-performing.

  15. This might sound silly but are you watching your games in comprehensive?

It really helps me to break down what is working and what is not. While being in comprehensive, pause the game to analyse the situation at times. When you lose possession or a player tries a **** pass/shot, rewind a few secondes and pause to analyse why. Low support? Pressure by the other team? Lack of options? Players too far appart? Etc

Same for an opposition goal/clear chance : is the formation solid? Why was my fullback defending alone? Was the opposition having to much time on the ball? Was my line of defense too high/too low? Etc

Playing in comprehensive until I am happy with the team flow (or for the full duration of the game, my preference unless we are steam rolling the opponent) was critical for me to improvebmy tactical skills and understanding of the game.

Also, with such a poor streak, I guess moral is an issue. What I do in all my saves (but you may have done it already) is to abuse the personnal talk with the players in order to improve the moral. I have great results by setting up a system of "rolling" personnal individual talks :

    - every 5th and 20th of the month, praise or warn about training.

    - every 10th and 25th, praise conduct.

    - every 15th, praise OR warn about form. Do NOT hesitate to warn a player about poor form, if the critic is deserved and he is not a shithead, it will go down well and should push him to improve moral and performance.

    - every 1st of the month, team meeting to assess form.

It sounds a bit of a hassle, but 2min of mouse clicking every game week is nothing when you look at the results on and off the pitch. To keep track of the "chat agenda", I make 5 recurring reminders in the Note section (under personnal profile)

Finally, after every bad performance, individual fine for poor performer. I go accordingly :

    - 6.5 = warn player

    - 6.4/6.3 = 1 week fine

    - 6.2 and below = 2 weeks fine

if the player is not deluted, he should accept the fine. If not, tone down the fine a bit (half week and 1 week, instead of 1 and 2 weeks) OR trust your captain to talk the player into putting his complaint aside.

    So, in a nutshell :

    - watch match in comprehensive to detect and understand what is working and what is not.

    - regular and consistent talks with the players, to monitor them and up the moral.

    - strict discipline for every bad performance.
