  1. I hope no one minds but I thought I’d share how my first season with my hometown Hereford FC went (even though they are in the National League North)

Well after a bit of a mixed start to the season I managed to get them to a 5th place finish and got to the Play offs but lost in the first play off game to York FC.

Overall I’m pretty happy with how the season went, brought in a couple of players that really helped us push on after a so-so start to the season. I brought in Sam Ackeroyd to be my main striker and he did the business with 32 goals for the season as well as Jake Kenyon who switched between LB and AML during the season but played the tail end of the campaign at AML after I brought in Matty Waters for LB.

I’ve begun preparing for the second season by getting in some players released by Man Utd, Arsenal and Tottenham, hopefully they’ll push the team towards a title and instant promotion to the National League rather than another go at the play offs

  2. Hey all,

I’ve never really be one for lower league but I thought for FM21 I’d play as my hometown team of Hereford FC.

Now the issue really is that I cannot get anything to work tactically in the Vanarama North. 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 DM, control/counter, positive/cautious.

Nothing seems to work all that really seems to happen is 1. I get battered for 90 minutes and lose 3-0 or I dominate for 90 minutes and lose to 1 half attempt by the opposition team or they get a draw in the last 10 minutes.

Does anyone have any advice on how to actually get a team to play in the lower league.

Note I’m not looking for help with a particular tactic as I don’t have one and I’m gonna restart the save and try again I just want some advice on how to play in the lower leagues

Oh I know, I was just trying to make the point that it's your game, so you should feel free to do whatever you want.

Well it was a moot point, loaded up a new game and McNeil was a 4 star potential so just stuck with that.

Brought in Haaland and Sancho and preseason has been a doddle.

Ive had injuries to Maguire and Axel and Mengi is out on loan so McTominay is currently and auxiliary CB, might train him as one as he’s done well there

Doesn't matter what it's considered in the minds of anyone else, it's a single player game. Play however you want to. Buy the editor and make their potential whatever you want, it's your game.

Well I’m not gonna use the editor as I don’t want to physically change anything I just want to re-roll the potential of 2 players, and I’m not looking for them to have specific attributes just the potential.

I had a go at it just to see if there was a possible of a higher potential ability and think I got 2.5 stars each time and done it around 3 times

Ah well I’ll give it 3 goes and use the best one as my save.

I wanna use them as when I was younger I’d alway just buy players and would kinda neglect the youth players unless they were proper wonder kid new gens but as I’ve got older I enjoy using the players that start at the club.

Shoretire looks great and I want to use Hugil and McNeil as my youth prospect strikers.

Probably gonna start a new save and bring in Haaland and Sancho then get rid of the usual suspects and Martial if I’m honest

  6. Well with the release of the full game I shall be starting a proper United save mainly because I only ran a small database and England loaded in the beta so there’s not a great deal of top quality staff knocking about but also because I screwed my beta save by trying to move on players that I ended up relying on such as lindelof (relegated him to the reserves to get Axel and Mengi in the squad and it just didn’t work).

Question is it considered bad/cheating/against the spirit of the game if I keep starting new games until Joe Hugil and Charlie McNeil get decent potential (due to them having a non fixed potential)

  7. Well I finally got a couple of hours on the new beta last night and I’m hoping that the Gegenpress isn’t as OP as last year.

I did alright preseason with my 4-3-1-2, even beat Bayern 4-2 in my final preseason game then proceeded to draw 4 league games on the bounce and I won 2 cup games 1-0 each before changing to a 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress and battering Southampton 6-0.

I’m going to test out a 4-3-1-2 Gegenpress and see if that gets similar results

Greenwoods stats look like he'd be imense as a striker tbf so it could be worth moving him there and getting a right winger- traditional sense in sancho or in other cases mbappe or smaller names to build up- pellistri is champ level I think so could be worth blending him in?

That was my thinking with opting for a 4-3-1-2 as a starting tactic.

The striking options look too good to choose just 1 and I don’t really want to play Greenwood as an AMR when he looks the business as a striker.

Plus I don’t want to spend my transfer budget on a right winger that is mostly gonna be a rotation option as the tactics I’m leaning towards using work are 2 striker systems.

I'm currently 21 matches in and 2nd in the table (behind Liverpool who are 2 points ahead with a game in hand). Really liking the team this year. Brought in Edouard for 35mil, Ben White for 30m, Gravenberch for 7mil now and 14mil across the next three years and Marcus Edwards for 14mil. Overpaid a bit for Edouard and probably for Ben White as well, but given that White is English, it was a good move in my mind to help reinforce the back line and fulfill a board goal of signing English players. Edouard was just a case where I didn't want to risk him going anywhere else, but I imagine I could have gotten him for 25-30mil. Sold off Lingard, Rojo and Romero for 15mil, 10mil and 2.5mil respectively. Still working to get some of the other deadwood out like Jones, but shockingly no one wants him.

My main tactic has been a 4231 with de Gea in goal, a back line of Telles - Maguire - Lindelof - AWB, Pogba and Fred in a double pivot with Fernandes ahead of them at AM. Rashford on the left, Greenwood on the right and it was supposed to be Edouard up top but he picked up an ab tear so it's mostly been Cavani until now as I work Edouard back up to fitness. White has started to perform quite well and push for Lindelof's place, so there's been some rotation there. I'm also still working out who I want on the left wing and at the striker spot since there are plenty of configurations for those positions.

Backup tactic is a 41212 to give Telles more room on the wing to get forward and play two strikers.

See I’ve been quiet bold with my save, I’ve not brought anyone in except Florentino Luis on a future transfer.

Ive sold, Jones, Rojo, lindelof and Eric will be going when he’s fit.

My main CB pairing will be Harry and Axel with Mengi promoted to the first XI. I’ve then decided to retrain AWB as a CB and I’ll be using him to cover injuries and probably he’s start at CB when I use a back 3 and to cover him on the right I’m using Brendan and Ethan Laird.

Also I’m going for a Youth centred Beta save so all of the top rated youths in the U18s have been promoted to U23s and the top U23s got promoted to the main team

  10. Cheers for getting this started BigV 👍

I’ll kick things off, prior to the beta release I’d gone back to FM17 for a few weeks and got playing an old formation I had great fun with in the 4-3-1-2 and I have to say that it looks like an obvious tactic to use with the current United team.

The flat 3 in midfield allows you to get VDB and Pogba in the starting line up as well as a holding midfielder to protect the back 4.

The AM allows Bruno to play in the hole and be a creative juggernaut and having 2 strikers allows for great rotation of Marcus, Tony, Mason and Edison.

So with that I mind my goal will be to get a 4-3-1-2 working as my main tactic with a 4-2-3-1 and then either a 4-1-2-2-1 or a 5-2-1-2 as my second and third
