Is there a way to make my center midfielder move to wide area?

Recommended Posts

I want to see my center midfielder move to wide area or even make overlapping run and cross near the byline.

Is there a specific role or instruction I can make to make this happen?

Play him in Mezzala role. Simple. Especially in a narrow tactic with no wingers.

Thank you for your reply. For me, a mezzala is a center midfielder who works in the half spaces/channels.

What I want to see is a center midfielder that moves to the sidelines and make overlapping run like a fullback or wingback, especially when I am using a inverted fullback and the inside forward cutting inside and occupying the half spaces.

Central Midfielder Attack with stay wider and run wide with ball led to this.

He was often waiting wider than the winger for the ball.

On one of the highlights he received the ball wider than the Winger and then dribbled hugging the touchline.

There were quite a few times what you see above could have happened but the winger regardless of role always seems to want to step in front of the CM preventing the space for the CM to run in to causing the the CM to cut inside again or pass to the winger so I am not sure it will work with wingers.

Well unfortunately the only way to attempt to replicate what you want is with Mezzala. Especially with one that has specific traits like "runs along left/right flank". No other role is programmed to go wide like Mezzala is. You cannot really instruct a generic midfielder to do what Mezzala does, much less to actually run along a flank.

And again like I said before with the right traits and in a narrow formations, Mezzala will go much wider then a half space.

OMG, I have the same question. For me, overlapping runs are a great automatism to unlock defense and I'm struggling to replicate that without attacking FB/WB. Since using 3-2 build up with 2 IFB and Libero, I have to switch to underlapping run with central mid-attack, and it's just not as effective. I tried with mezzala, but they just don't combine with IFs to make overlapping runs often enough.

And how do you guys improve your attack, I mean, my 5 Attacking players do score, but a lot of the time it comes from individual abilities, long shots,... Underlapping run do happen with central midfield, but they often shoot rather than pass the ball to free agents

Sounds like the result of playing on a high tempo. I would also examine your choice of striker if this is happening.

Could always try something like this, but I agree w/ @crusadertsar that MEZ on narrow is what you're looking for.

MEZ(s), compared to attack, can see him progress the play more in line with his teammates around him if you're looking for combinations like an overlap.

I appreciate your replys. So it seems there is no way to make a center midfielder to do exactly what I want in FM24?

Is there a place for players to provide ideas for FM25? I think it is quite often to see a center midfielder moves to sidelines in real life for build-up purposes and providing width , especially in the current football meta of using inverted fullbacks or wingbacks.

It happens literally all the time for me. I play with mez and use "run at defense" which i think does it. When they find a gap they dribble there. They also do it without the ball many times, maybe it's an attribute issue?

Edit: You can also use overlap, that might also do it.
Edit no 2: Whatever role you use for the midfielder, make sure he has "roam from position" checked.

I ran a few tests with different combos, and my conclusion is that even with using mezzala or central mid to do overlap or underlap run, it is usually not as effective as FB/WB overlap simply because they are normally slower than FB/WB.
I might reconsider my attacking front 5/6, though, because ifb, libero combo is a very stable combo when forming the 3-2 in rest defense, but front 5 may lack a little bit of pace to break down the opponent.

If you're using the 3-2, then you can simply copy City's approach.

Quick wide players to force the opposition out of their defensive shape with a Poacher and progressive 8's inside. The use of a MEZ will be particularly deadly here, hitting the half space that's been opened by the wide attackers.
