Climb the Ladder IV

I have decided to come back and do another career run through at what I consider to be the most difficult challenge I have ever attempted. Something I call "Climb the Ladder". This is the fourth iteration and every single other one has finished in disaster, mostly because of league made bugs, game related bugs and I think in one instance I gave up. This time around we are going to take on the this gargantuan challenge again.

What is the challenge?

The challenge revolves around being confined to specific area of the globe until we have met the criteria to pass on to the next round of the challenge. In essence we start on the lowest rung of the ladder and climb our way up each rung.

How do we advance through each rung of the ladder?

To advance from each rung of the ladder we need to accumulate points in each area, and if we get enough points then we will be able to pass to the next region. Most regions (which on the graph provided are in grey) require 500 points to complete. The gold regions require 1,500 points to complete and gold regions require me to only manage in a country that is normally one of the best in the specific continent.

How do you get to 500 points or more?

We can only win points through winning trophies. Only top division league titles count towards our score, so if we take over a second division side in a particular country and win the second division this is worth no points. We also get points from cup competitions wins. In previous iterations that points totals were a little more complicated, but after thinking about it I have simplified it a little bit.

League Title = 100 Points

Any Domestic Cup Competition = 40 Points

Any Charity Shield or Cup Competition = 20 Points (this is where a competition is called a "Super Cup" or only has 2 participants enter the competition)

Any Top Level Continental Competition i.e. UEFA Champions League, Copa Libertadores etc = 500 Points

Any Secondary Continental Competition i.e. UEFA Europa League, CAF Confederation Cup = 200 Points

Any Tertiary Continental Competition i.e. UEFA Europa Conference League = 50 Points

Any Continental Super Cup i.e. UEFA Super Cup = 40 Points

FIFA World Club Cup = 80 Points

It is worth noting that much like every other Climb the Ladder challenge these are base points available for each competition. However domestic trophies degrade in value for every time we win them by 50% with the same club. Continental Competitions are unaffected and are always worth their base value.

Example

We are Liverpool FC in England and win the League, FA Cup and UEFA Europa League in Year One. We would gain 100 points for EPL win, 40 points for the FA Cup and 250 points for the UEL, for a grand total of 390 points for the season. If the next season we won The League, the FA Cup and English League Cup, the league would now be worth 50 points, the FA Cup 20 points, and the League Cup 40 points, for a grand total of 110 points. If in season three we won only the League and the FA Cup we would only get 25 points for the League and 10 points for the FA Cup for a total of 35 points, less than if we won the League Cup with another side all together.

Hence there is strategy involved in when is the right time to move clubs to maximise the points on offer, and we are incentivized to move instead of staying too long and reducing our potential point output.

Can You Lost Points?

Yes,

Being Sacked under any circumstances loses us 100 points, resigning to avoid a sacking is treated the same (this will be measured by if there are any articles that we are about to be sacked).

Where is the Full Ladder?

I attach it above. The journey will go through each of the Confederations and we will have to complete each step before moving onto the next and they go completely through a Confederation before we move onto the next. The order is the Oceania, North America, Asia, Africa, South America and finally Europe.

The order of the countries in the ladder beyond the confederation and then based around the existing reputation of the Premier Division in the country. The more reputable the higher in the list they came.

How Will You Provide Updates?

Probably a season at a time as this is such a long challenge that it will take hundreds of in game years to complete, provided the game managed to last that long. It hasn't ever lasted long enough to get to completion, so here's hoping that changes.

The updates won't focus too much on signings and things like since they are more or less irrelevant in the context of the challenge. I will be recording however the best goal scorer and assist makers during the journey and presenting that at the end of each update as well as a running tally of where we have been.

Where are you starting?

Well my manager will be from a randomly selected country, any across the whole journey, and will start at a randomly assigned club using the "Pick a Club for me" button, starting in OFC4. I will only ever have the countries loaded that are in the specific step I am tackling. Once I complete the step I will unload those nations and move onto the next step.

The next update will be the Manager introduction and probably the first season.

Nice to see you back with this challenge. I did a little one myself but I only completed Oceania and stopped at AFC 10 or 11. It's definitely fun and really nice to pass the time without overthinking. I would recommend you doing a save for each continent though, too many custom databases and things are due to break

Yeah, it is likely to break at some point. Last time I did it, I didn't even use custom databases apart from the Name Fix and it still broke somehow. We will see how far we get.

This is Helder Manuel, a 19-year old national of Mozambique, the country we were randomly assigned. He will be coming from Southeastern Africa looking to take the world of football by storm. He has no reputation and coaching badges to his name.

I focussed mostly on adaptability for our skills since that is probably the most important factor our manager, considering the number of different clubs that he will likely have to manage in his hopefully very long career.

FC TOFAGA (TUVALU)

SEASON 2023

We were randomly assigned FC Tofaga which to be honest is not bad. They were predicted 2nd place for the upcoming season, but it is another club in Tuvalu; Nauti who have dominated domestic football for a very long time now. Tuvalu itself is in the Pacific Ocean, a small atoll of land some 3,000 kms north of New Zealand and about 3,000 kms northeast of Australia. Quite a remote little place.

PROVIDENT FUND CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE

The league season in Tuvalu consists of just five games. All the clubs play each other once, since we all play at the same ground on the island, and I believe the only ground on the island. We managed to win all our games including the final one against Nauti when we had already secured the league title. So that is a very nice way to start the season collecting 100 points straight away.

INDEPENDENCE CUP

We managed to secure the Independence Cup, which we had already qualified for the semi final last season. It's currently a bit unknown to me why the group stages occur the season before, but I was glad we were already at this stage and we managed to capture the Independence Cup with a 3-1 win against Nauti B in the final. We win another 40 points.

CHRISTMAS CUP

We did make another cup final in the form of the Christmas Cup, however bizarrely it was our B side who would end up winning it as we lost in extra time to them. I guess perhaps next time I could interfere and install some team orders, but unfortunately we miss out on the points here.

SQUAD

When we first arrived at the club we barely had enough players to make up a squad and absolutely not staff. Once we got an assistant manager and then a few more staff we could start the process of identifying players. Initially we went after whomever we could in Tuvalu. Since all the clubs are amateur it is a tug of war to convince players to move clubs. Eventually however agents from far afield started making contact with some with some unknown quantities and since we did not have to pay them anyway we got who we could through the door. That included Mujahid from Pakistan, Rahim from Bangladesh, Singh from Australia, Gendron from Tahiti and two Mongolian lads, who add a lot of quality that we would not normally see in Tuvalu football.

MANAGER THOUGHTS

A decent first season, but we should have wrapped up the Christmas Cup, and it ended up being a strange game that we somehow lost to the B side, which was disappointing. There are two other cup competitions that we were already knocked out of so I hope that in the coming season they may be up for grabs to us. Otherwise it might start making the idea of moving elsewhere more likely for us. For now however we will remain in post of the next season and hopefully we can seal some more points next season.

FC TOFAGA (TUVALU)

SEASON 2024

PROVIDENT FUND CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE

The league came around again this year, and we managed to stay perfect within to get our second league title since we arrived in Tuvalu. Theoretically the final game between us and Ha'apai United decided the title, but we did have a three point lead going and better goal difference so I am unsure how it would have been decided should we have lost. We pick up another 50 points.

TUVALU GAMES

We won the Tuvalu Games, as we scythed our way through the group stages and eventually won the final against Vaoloa. We would need penalties in the semi final, really the only part where we needed a bit of luck to progress. We pick up another 40 points.

NATIONAL BANK OF TUVALU CUP

Despite a loss to Lakena United in the group stages it was enough to progress in second place in groups. We would beat Nauti in the semi final and we reacquainted with Lakena United in the final where we managed to change the scoreline this time winning 3-0. Another 40 points gathered.

INDEPENDENCE CUP

We breezed through the group and managed to win the Independence Cup for the second year running. Beating Nauti in the semi final was a tough affair but Lakena United were again in the final and we managed to overcome them 3-0. We won it last year, so this year it's only worth 20 points to us.

CHRISTMAS CUP

We did make the semi final of the Christmas Cup, however we are leaving the club before we were able to get to the semi final stage which only happens in December 2024. We never won the Christmas Cup in Tuvalu and I would be surprised if we'd be back so I don't see us ever winning it now.

SQUAD

The squad is pretty similar to last year apart from players retired and we did lose the odd player here and there to other clubs. We also released a few players where they were not getting much football and they were not happy to stay.

MANAGER PROFILE

We have managed to get our National A Licence, but it would seem that Tofaga were never going to sanction us to get anything further than that at the club for fear we would leave, well we are leaving anyway.

MANAGER THOUGHTS

It has been a good season for us as we picked up plenty of points. It's a shame we couldn't stick around until the Christmas Cup as I expected us to win that tournament this year and that would have been another 40 points, but a good job relatively speaking came up and I felt it was a good opportunity to move on now and now waste much time in between clubs. We will be leaving Tuvalu behind and going on to pastures anew. We are now about halfway points wise into OFC4.

ISLAND PITBULLS (MICRONESIA)

SEASON 2025

Upon leaving Tofaga and Tuvalu we were on our way northwest toward the island nation of Micronesia to join our new club Island Pitbulls. They had just finished mid-table, but the club going into the new season were deemed to be the second best team in the league, so this was perhaps an indicator as to why they were looking for a new manager. In Micronesia there is just one competition in the form of the Premier League, so only 100 points up for grabs.

POHNPEI PREMIER LEAGUE

It was very successful first season with Island Pitbulls as we lost just twice and drew only twice on the way to landslide league title win. It's another 100 points for us this season.

SQUAD

There wasn't a lot of moves in the transfer window, primarily because it took a lot of time to assemble the staff again. We joined again without any staff at the club. There was this time though a much more comprehensive squad if not a particularly great one. We got two players to join at the end of the previous season with Fata Filemoni coming in from Tuvalu and we even got an Estonian centre back to join us at the club, and he being one of the better players at the club.

MANAGER PROFILE

We managed to get our new club to fund our Continental C Licence halfway through the season, when we were doing well which is a great little bonus for us, as I was assuming I might go through the remainder of Oceanic football without ever being able to study the next badge. We are quickly getting trophies under our belt but our reputation is still extremely low, which won't matter at the moment but is something we will need to improve going into the future.

MANAGER THOUGHTS

We arrived in Micronesia and got the job done in the league to bank another 100 points which is great. I think we will stay for another season and hopefully capture another league title which would then put us on 400 points and only a league title win away from completing OFC4. That and there have not been any jobs really available that would entice me to move at the moment. We will look at the end of next season and see if there are any jobs that will be adequate for our purposes.

ISLAND PITBULLS (MICRONESIA)

SEASON 2026

POHNPEI PREMIER LEAGUE

We lost more games this season than we did last season but in the end we were still very comfortable winners of the league title. In the end we took the title by 16 points from International B. Another 50 points for us.

SQUAD

Not much action in the transfer market as the team was already good enough to win the league, albeit we have a lot of gaps in the team, such is Micronesian football.

MANAGER PROFILE

We are advancing as a manager as we did manage to get Island Pitbulls to finance so far up to our Continental A Licence.

MANAGER THOUGHTS

It was a season without much drama as we reached the 400 point mark in OFC4. We will be leaving Island Pitbulls now that it is the end of the season as it just doesn't make any sense to remain in charge with the diminishing returns that are going to happen. We actually don't have a club ready to join. The market seems a bit slow when it comes to managers, so we may need to wait a while and perhaps even join a club that is in less than a positive situation than we found so far in Tuvalu and Micronesia. We will be back once we have found a new home.

TURAWA URBAN COUNCIL (TUC) (KIRIBATI)

SEASON 2027

We left Micronesia to travel east to Kiribati, which is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. This job was a very big risk in joining TUC or Turawa Urban Council as they had by far the worst team in Kiribati. Since there were no other jobs available, I thought I may as well be managing as opposed to waiting for another job to come up.

KIRIBATI NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Kiribati National Championship is split into four groups with the winner qualifying for the Champions Playoff which essentially is the Semi Final stage. At various moments we looked like we might be able to top the league, but we more or less bottled it away to Aranuka and then we needed results to go our way and they didn't with Aranuke beating ETC on the final day of the season. We only got as far as we did by raiding everyone we could, whether it was from previous clubs in Micronesia and Tuvalu or agent offers when they came in. Unfortunately there are no points for us this season.

SQUAD

The transfer market was the most important part of our season as we got in pretty much anyone we could. The best player we had before we made a signing I think had one gold star, so it goes to show what an improvement some of the players we brought in have been. Unfortunately it was not enough for us.

MANAGER PROFILE

MANAGER THOUGHTS

We were close to getting to the playoff but it was not to be. I was very happy with the signings we made and I think we might have a chance next season. My current plan is to stay for another season and try and win the National Championship but I also recognise that the format of the tournament makes it very hard and we have no real opportunities to make any mistakes going into this. If a better job comes along then I will likely take it but I get the feeling that that may not happen. Anyway no points for us this season.

He has to contend with things like the pitch being infested with bullfrogs. great read!

I think I had read about someone that was managing the national team in Micronesia, but didn't know too much about it. I actually probably enjoyed Micronesia more than both the other countries on account that there is an actual reasonably standard league season.

TURAWA URBAN COUNCIL (TUC) (KIRIBATI)

SEASON 2028

KIRIBATI NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

We put right the errors of last year and did very well in the Group Stage to progress to the semi final playoff. We faced Maiana in the semi final and narrowly got past them 3-2 on aggregate. In the final we faced off against Teraina and we could thank our home leg for winning the Championship as we won out 3-0 before a 4-4 draw away. That's all we needed to get the remaining 100 points we needed of OFC4.

SQUAD

It was very much the same as last season, no one has a nailed down contract so we just try and sign whomever we can as well as an foreigner players that are offered by their agents. We had a lot more money this year to spend on acquisitions so that certainly helped, but normally we lose players as quickly as they come in. At one point we had a Chilean midfielder that lasted about three games before lower division Chilean sides got wind that he was here and got him back to Chile. You never really feel you have settled side, it's just a case of whomever is at the club at the time you hope they are good enough.

MANAGER PROFILE

MANAGER THOUGHTS

We managed to get the job done in Kiribati after failing last season. Kiribati is a formidable challenge because of the format and what I have said before about the fragility of the squad you build. I am glad that we have managed to get over the line here and we can finally put OFC4 behind us after 6 years and we can move on to OFC3.

CENTRAL UNITED (SAMOA)

SEASON 2030

We were out of job for just over a year as the new leagues loaded, and eventually we managed to find our way to Samoan outfit, Central United for our first stop in OFC3. It was another calculated risk. Central United had finished in 5th place in the season just gone and they had performed about in line with their abilities. To take this time to a league title would be pushing it a bit, but I was hoping we could work like we had in some of the other Pacific nations and grab key players here and there from other clubs. This time around we did have a more or less full compliment of staff which would allow us to move quicker, not that we were rushed for time having just joined as the season had ended.

SAMOA NATIONAL LEAGUE

We managed to improve the team but we were predicted to finish 7th even after the signings had been made so I was not expecting to challenge for the title, however we started the season very well and soon we had opened up a chasm at the top of the league. Eventually Lepea would defeat us but they could never really apply much pressure on us as we made sure we always recovered when we had a less than desirable result and eventually no one could stop us as we won the clubs inaugural first league title, with the bookmakers having us at 150-1 prior to the season to complete the feat. That is a very nice 100 points immediately on the board.

SAMOA CUP

We followed up the league form with a great Samoa Cup campaign. Only really the semi final and final gave us any pause for thought as we needed extra time against Kiwi to progress to the final and the Final itself was a little uncomfortable as we eventually managed to subdue Sogi.

SQUAD

The strategy for building the squad was the same as previous seasons, get the scouts to pick out players and then just see who we could get. The difference was that even after we had completed the squad the bookmakers did improve our chances and I was not very convinced we could challenge but I was very wrong. We had some standout performances especially Leulua from attacking midfield who ended up as top goalscorer for the club.

MANAGER PROFILE

The main news is that Central United agreed to fund out Pro Licence so that was a major positive as we are now on our way to studying our final badge.

MANAGER THOUGHTS

A great first season at Central United that was a little unexpected. I thought it might take a couple of season to take control in Samoa but we managed it immediately. The perfect move now would be to move to one of the Samoan clubs that have dispensed with their managers but we have already missed out on a couple and so I am not sure whether we will move. If no move materialises then we will remain with Central United for another season and then we will be looking to move on to pastures anew.

VAITELE-UTA (SAMOA)

SEASON 2031

We managed to get a move pretty soon after the season finished. Vaitele-Uta one of the more traditional bigger sides in the country had sacked their manager and they decided to give us the job. The advantage of this was that in theory we had a better team and the normal amount of points were up for grabs again this season in Samoa as opposed to half points with Central United.

SAMOA NATIONAL LEAGUE

We were third favourites for the league, so we always had a chance but we really didn't give anyone else a chance pretty much from the start of the season as we romped home with the title. Unfortunately Central United went down on the final day of the4 season and we ended up being the team to confirm that, so a bit of friendly fire there. We get another 100 points in OFC3.

SAMOA CUP

We had a very easy route to the final of the cup. Even Lepea a traditional top side in Samoa did not put up much challenge to us and we faced Lion of Judah's B side in the final, such was a very weird Samoa Cup this season. It means another 40 points to us.

SQUAD

The story is the same everyone in the Pacific where we picked up whomever we could to improve the team. We actually managed to amass quite a few foreign players, but a lot of them as soon as they arrive they moved again back to wherever they were from whenever they got the first offer. Parraguez and Atillio who did stay were brilliant as was Uche Sunday.

MANAGER PROFILE

We managed to complete or Continental Pro Licence, which means we are set for the remainder of our career.

MANAGER THOUGHTS

A great season as we picked up all the available points. We decided to forego a shot at the OFC Champions League last season because realistically we would have no chance against the kind of opposition that we would be facing there and decided to move clubs and it worked out from a points perspective. Should we have a chance to move to another of the big boys here is Samoa or elsewhere then I would not hesitate to do it, but it nothing does become available then we will have another season here.

LUPE O LE SOAGA (SAMOA)

SEASON 2032

We managed to engineer another move this season to the biggest club in Samoa. They have been underachieving for quite some time and the board decided it was best to bring us in to hopefully bring back the good times to the club.

SAMOA NATIONAL LEAGUE

We achieved perfection this season as went 22 wins from 22 games as no one had the slightest chance against us all season. We won every game by at least a two goal margin as we captured the league title. Another 100 points for us.

SAMOA CUP

The cup went the same as the league as we faced very little challenge on our way to capturing it. Another 40 points on the board.

SQUAD

The strategy we had was to try and get the key players we had at Vaivele-Uta and we pretty much managed to get everyone I wanted, such Parraguez, Atilio and Sunday. We then went down the tried and tested formula or getting the best players we could then get from the scout reports and agent offers and built a formidable squad.

MANAGER PROFILE

MANAGER THOUGHTS

We are now pretty close to completing OFC3, with over 400 points on the board. Mathematically we would need to win everything domestically next season and we would be about 30 points short which would then probably need a another double to complete the journey in OFC3, if we decide to stay at Lupe o le Soago. But at least it is now a viable strategy.

LUPE O LE SOAGA (SAMOA)

SEASON 2033

OFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

I had assumed earlier on that it would be impossible for a club of our stature to win the Champions League, but I was clearly very wrong. We more or less destroyed the competition in the OFC Champions League which occurs right at the start of the new season. We beat Auckland United twice in New Zealand to cap off a memorable Champions League campaign and capture the 500 points.

SQUAD
 

We had to replace a few players, especially some of the foreigners that decided to leave but we managed to get some great replacements in where required. This team was built really with domestic football in mind, but little did I know that we were building a team that could conquer Oceania.

MANAGER PROFILE

MANAGER THOUGHTS

We complete OFC3 with a very unexpected Champions League win that gives us the remaining points and many more that we didn't need. Perhaps I should have considered that we had a chance to win the Champions League with a side from Samoa, but it still surprises me that we had any chance at all. Either way I am very happy with that as we leave OFC3 behind. In the end we completed the whole of leg in Samoa, not by design but just the way it worked out.

HENDERSON EELS (SOLOMON ISLANDS)

SEASON 2034

We were out of a job for a while until the Solomon Islands S-League season was just about to finish and then we got a great job offer in the form of Henderson Eels. Probably the best side on the islands and certainly a club I think we make real progress with.

S-LEAGUE

We only had the final four games of the league season to complete and we managed to keep the club in 4th place where we took them over. We managed to win all the remaining games of the league season, all by a pretty similar scoreline.

SQUAD

No transfers as yet, the team looks pretty good, it even features Natan Vieira whom we had at our last club Lupe in Samoa. He moved to Henderson Eels while we were out of a job.

MANAGER PROFILE

MANAGER THOUGHTS

It was a very short season for us as we just picked things up right at the end of the season, but I think we can mount a challenge next season, and now I am thinking if we could win the Champions League with a Samoan team perhaps we can repeat the feat with Henderson. All will be answered next season.

HENDERSON EELS (SOLOMON ISLANDS)

SEASON 2034/35

OFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

I wasn't even totally sure we had qualified for the Champions League, but when I found out that we had I knew that we could win and we managed to do just that. here were some tough games along the way such as Wellington Olympic where we scraped by with an extra time win or the final which ended 5-4, although we had been 5-3 ahead and Auckland United scored very late in the game. A great win that gives us the points to move on to OFC1.

S-LEAGUE

We made absolute mince meat of the league, our goal difference telling the story, as on three seperate occasions we scored 10 goals in a league game. There was absolutely no one who could live with us. We leave before the season is over, but we have already been confirmed as league champions so although we didn't need the points because of the Champions League we walk away as Champions.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

The cup competition for the Solomon Islands really was not much harder than the league. We conceded only once in the final during the whole tournament, and that was a final in which we destroyed Solomon Warriors 8-1. A great win for us, and this competition concluded just three days before the Champions League final.

SQUAD

We started with an embarassment of riches prior to bringing anyone in and we just kept being offered Brazilians and who was I to say no to them. There was a stricter cap on foreign players, with only 4 allowed which meant we even had to get rid of some of the other foriegners that were already at the club. Caetano was amazing up until a horrible season ending injury so he ended up on 16 goals gotten at 1.94 per 90 minutes. John Suri filled in nicely and got himself 36 goals this season. Right back Giardini was also a revelation with 35 assists and 9 goals himself. he would probably have to be my player of the season with Caetano out.

MANAGER THOUGHTS

OFC2 was over very quickly as we arrived at one of the top clubs and quickly asserted our control over the team and ended up with treble which included the Champions League and passage to OFC1. We will see where we land once we finally get a job in that region.

Yeah, at the moment can't do any wrong. The small leagues are definitely helping us out as we can just use the transfer market to outmanoeuvre our opponents and the New Zealand teams aren't as scary as I remember them in previous challenges when it came to the OFC Champions League.

HIENGHENE SPORT (NEW CALEDONIA)

SEASON 2036

Upon leaving the Solomon Islands, we would eventually get a very highly reputed job in the form of Hienghene Sport, one the best sides in New Caledonia. They had finished mid table in the season just finished and they were in need of a new manager hence we came into the picture. We would not have OFC Champions League football but we would inherit a powerhouse of Island football.

NEW CALEDONIA SUPER LEAGUE

We made a lot of changes to the squad and team cohesion was a problem for the majority of the season however we were never really in danger of not winning the league as we romped home by 14 points in the end. 100 points on the board.

NEW CALEDONIA CUP

I felt we really bottled the cup this season. We went out in the Quarter Finals to Ne Drehu in a really drab affair from our perspective. It probably isn't worth moaning too much about but we miss out on points here.

SQUAD

We absolutely overdid it when it came to the transfer window. It happened because there were so many players available that could improve the team and we had a lot of spare budget space, and secondly the league has no rules concerning foreign players so it seemed to me at the time a no brainer. I had not really considered how long team cohesion would be an issue and while we mostly managed players not playing it became annoying to have to manage them after a while. We even released a few that were kicking up a fuss, paying them off from their contracts even though in a perfect world I would have had them as backups. It does mean that next season I think will be  quieter window, and we will only move for guys who will make us much better.

It was not a perfect season by any stretch of the imagination, the cup burning a hole in my memory of what might have been, but ultimately it make very little difference. The goal was to win the league and get the club back in the Champions League which we have done. The two previous times we have had a shot at the Champions League we managed to win the tournament and this time that has been assembled I think should blow any of my previous teams out of the Pacific waters, so assuming that we get the mood at the club right I would almost expect to be at the final stages of the tournament come the semi final and final.

SEASON 2037

OFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

It didn't quite go to plan in the Champions League. We made it as far as the semi final but lost out to Auckland United at that stage. We had a goalkeeping injury which meant we had a keeper of much lower standard and I will blame that as a contributing factor as to why we couldn't get the job done. 

NEW CALEDONIA SUPER LEAGUE

We could not be touched in the league, especially after the Champions League failure it was particularly gratifying to go 22 wins out of 22 games as we put the rest of New Caledonia to the sword. 50 points gained for our second league title.

NEW CALEDONIA CUP

There were no mistakes this season as we treated the cup much like the league and made our way through the rounds without so much as a hint of a problem. Another 40 points accrued.

SQUAD

We still did business this year, but it was far more measured. The team is starting to look like a team from Brazil with the amount of Brazilians we have brought to the club. We were unlucky not to progress in the Champions League, an injury to Ndiaye at the time meant that we were forced to use Arnal. We have rectified the situation for the coming campaign next year. I can't see a major obvious defect in the team apart from a bit a of bloated squad that is tough to manage at times. If we can find a few quality players we will add them to the squad otherwise expect a very similar squad next year.

I thought we would be done with OFC1 and Oceania this season, but sometimes this challenge can humble you when you think you are going to do things and sometimes when you least expect it amazing things happen. I am confident for next year that we have as good a chance as anyone to capture the Champions League, if we don't then we will need to really rethink things and assess whether we actually need to move on to avoid significant diminishing returns in terms of points. So it could well be that next season is the last with Hienghene Sport whatever happens.

SEASON 2038

OFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

 We always had a good chance of winning the Champions League and this year we managed to put what happened last year behind us and lift the Champions League beating Auckland United a team whom we have played so many times during our time in Oceania in the final.

SQUAD

This year was just about getting rid of some of the players that had not contributed much and see if we could improve the team in the odd area. There is no doubt that there is a massive Brazilian influence on the team built over the last few years and we have completely iradicated the New Caledonians from the squad which is a shame, but ultimately they were a grade below the level of football we have now. The Champions League ends early in the season so there isn't a huge amount to say in terms of performances but it is visible above that the likes of Lima and Wagner Cardoso were key to our efforts.

Just like that our time in Oceania comes to and end as we capture our third OFC Champions League as a manager. We will now be moving on to North America.

WEST END PREDATORS (ANGUILLA)

SEASON 2039

We waited for almost a year, until a job came up and to be honest we took the first job we could in the form of West End Predators from Anguilla. They are predicted to be relegated this season, but by the time we arrived in the job they were already in 4th place and sitting pretty. However I would find out that they had barely register a first team player and instead had registered all their Under 21s. it made no sense, but I assumed that was what had happened to several other teams in the league. So this season was right off because there were just a few games to go and things were bizarre.

AFA LEAGUE

There were only three games to go of the league season ad we did pretty well, dragging ourselves to 2nd place in the league which I will take. Diamond won the league, not sure if they were affected by the registration issues or not, but the funny thing is I have no idea whether I expect next season to be more difficult or easier. It should also be noted that the league season is as short as some of the shortest league season in the Pacific. Something that I am not a big fan of.

Well the positive is that we have finally arrived in North America and we have a club, although I am not so sure this is the best club to be at, and the welcome has been a little bit weird. There are two competitions in Anguilla, the league and the cup and if I can walk away with both that would be a great achievement for me. We will work in the off season to improve the squad. I haven't even shown you the squad since the registration issue would make it meaningless at this stage to see.

WEST END PREDATORS (ANGUILLA)

SEASON 2040

AFA LEAGUE

It was imperative that in this short league season we got off to a good start and we did just that winning our first four games before two draws in March. The win against Attackers in April, meant that Doc's United needed a massive swing in goal difference to win the league and hope that we lost. We won the game anyway to win the league and collect our first 100 points in North America.

ANGUILLA PRESIDENT'S CUP

Where the league was great, prior to that we had the President's Cup and that was a bit of a disaster as we were knocked out in group stages. The whole group came down to the final game against Roaring Lions after we had both beaten Attackers. At the time it worried me a lot that we lost, but in the end we got the league so I would have definately taken the league over the cup, but it was a shame to exit the competition so early.

SQUAD

We needed a lot of reinforcements to be competitive, this team was not at all good. We raided Eagle's Claw, and for some reason the players were open to coming to play for us. Then we eventually got some foreigners that really would make the difference.

It was a sturdy season as we picked up the league title. I am open to remaining for another season and seeing if we can complete a double which next season would give us 90 points. However I think whatever happens we will probably be leaving at the end of next season. The job market has been very slow across the countries that make up NA12, so I am not really looking forward to looking for another job. With no sign of a Champions League anywhere on the horizon, since I don't think we even qualify for it, we will need to work hard domestically to get these points. Obviously I should add that even if we did qualify for the Champions League we would have absolutely no chance with the calibre of player that we have at the club.

WEST END PREDATORS (ANGUILLA)

SEASON 2041

AFA LEAGUE

We managed to retain our AFA League title without losing a game, the same as last season although this season I felt the team was little more convincing and this time around we had wont he league before we even kicked off our final game as the final fixtures were not played at the same time. It is worth 50 points to us.

ANGUILLA PRESIDENT'S CUP

Not too sure what it is about the cup that has been difficult for us, it could be that it sits right at the start of the season and we aren't really ready for it but this time we made it out of the groups and promptly again lost 1-0, this time to Doc United. Very disappointing and a trophy I had banked we would win this year. So it's annoying not to bag the points for it.

SQUAD

Palermo was a big loss and not one we could replace. All we could do was to give up having a quality full back and redistribute the quality into central defence with Mazinho. I think it might have made us a better team and more difficult to beat but I would have also liked to have kept Palermo. Overall the squad is very good for this level of football.

A real shame about the cup but at least we did get the points again this year for league win. Part of me considered staying but its just not worth it, since the league is getting to be practically worthless. Not many jobs have come up so I am bit concerned we may be waiting for a while but I think at this stage we just don't have much of a choice but to leave West End and see if we can land somewhere else in a decent length of time.

UPRISING (ANGUILLA)

SEASON 2042

We left West End Predators and we found a job pretty quickly at fellow Anguillan side Uprising, which was very nice. They were certainly not at the same level as West End but we would have the full transfer window to correct that.

AFA LEAGUE

We were originally predicted to finish in 6th place but we worked hard in the transfer window and this translated to the league we were imperious throughout the eight games the league season lasts. We pick up another 100 points for the league win.

ANGUILLA PRESIDENT'S CUP

The curse of the President's Cup seems to follow us around as we lose to our former side West End Predators, and fail to get out of the group.

SQUAD

We did a fair bit of business to bring in players that could improve us. A lot of the transfers were domestic players who didn't count towards the number of foreigners as we already had quite a few. In the end we had three top goalscorers on 7 goals showing that it was squad performance this season when it came to our endeavours.

A good start at Uprising as we pick up the league title, but the President's Cup just seems so very far away from our grasp. Next season we will be looking to see if we could win the double as that would help a lot. So far at least from a points total perspective we sit on the half way mark of 250 points gained so far.

SEASON 2043

AFA LEAGUE

Another perfect league season sees us collect another league title.

PRESIDENT'S CUP

We finally managed to get rid of the hoodoo with the President's Cup as we destroyed most teams we played. With a 9-1 win over West End, 6-0 over Attackers and 6-1 in the final against Diamond. We finally get 40 points on the board for the President's Cup.

SQUAD

The focus was on bringing in Anguillan talent in general and we managed to continue to improve the squad, to the point now where it is undoubted that we have the best team in the country. Fleming was key this season with 15 goals and hopefully we can keep a hold of him going forward.

A good season for us as we managed to finally collect a league and cup double. I was thinking it over, as to whether it would be best to move on, but I think we will stay for another season and that should put us then with touching distance of completion at our next club. It's a bit of gamble to get possibly on 45 points for the whole season if we win the double but if we do, it should hold us in very good stead from here.

SEASON 2045/46

We were out of work for about a year before we managed to finally get the first job available and it ended up being a very good one for our purposes as we could land the job at Ideal SC, one of the best sides on the island of Montserrat. The season had just finished and they had just finished in 3rd place. In Montserrat there is only the league to compete for, so that's not ideal but it will do.

MONTSERRAT CHAMPIONSHIP

We walked the league in very easy fashion to collect the Montserrat Championship and with it 100 points.

SQUAD

The squad needed a bit of work and we mostly managed to get players from Police, our main rivals on the island and that contributed to us being able to walk away with the league this year.

Another league title, now brings us to within just a few points of completing NA12. If we can be half as good next year as this year we should have this sewn up. I think as a manager now we haven't lost a game of football in about 4 years so that is very impressive in and of itself.

MONTSERRAT CHAMPIONSHIP

We won the league at a canter this year. We won it early enough I can resign at the end of December with the points required for NA12 secured.

SQUAD

The team was more or less good enough anyway, we just got a few players through where we felt they added a bit of depth to the team.

We finally complete NA12 via Anguilla and Montserrat. We really didn't come under much strain during our time in this region. The fact that there was no continental competition to compete in made it longer but I knew as soon as we got going at Ideal that were soon to be done here. Up next we will be moving on to NA11

ACADEMY EAGLES (TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS)

SEASON 2048/49

We were out of work for about a year and half, and the first few jobs that came up were for clubs that looked relegated already. Eventually we would get the job Academy Eagles in the Turks and Caicos Islands which was a mid-table club, albeit in a very small league structure.

WIW PROVO PREMIER LEAGUE

A good start and middle of the season were what we needed to kick on and win this league title. To be honest we were never really troubled. Early on Beaches and SWA Sharks looked like they might hang with us but that never materialised. 100 points for us.

TCI President's Cup

We were fortunate to get through the Quarter Final first stage of the competition, but from there it was very comfortable as we won the cup for 40 points.

SQUAD

Transfer-wise we just did what we normally do and tried to get who we could. This was harder than normal because we struggled for staff and we only got a scout right at the end of the season so we were a bit blind in buying players, and were reliant on agent offers and just got who we could. The team is proven for the league and the double win proves that but there are lots of gaps in it.

This leg of the journey was mostly complicated by staff. This made it difficult to train, difficult to spot players, but most annoyingly it meant we had to be the manager for the U21 team and the Reserves. Incidentally we won the U21 league and the Reserve league as well, but it was pretty bloody annoying, and it has kind of forced my hand to move on from the club. It might well be the best decision anyway to move on as we have the 140 points in the bag and there will be diminishing returns from here in both competitions. I am however concerned that it could take a while to find the next job.

OUALICHI (SINT MAARTEN)

SEASON 2049/50

Surprisingly we would only be out of job for about 5 months or so. We would find a job in Sint Maarten just before the league season was about to start in the form of Oualichi. It was a risk as they were seen as the worst side in the top division but they had just finished 4th last season which gave me some hope.

KAMPIOENSCHAP VAN SINT MAARTEN

It was really tough early on because we were out of the transfer window and we had a threadbare poor squad and all we could do early on is promote the youth players into the first team, but eventually we were able to get to the transfer window and that completely changed our team. We went from just above the relegation place up the table and in the end won the league quite easily. We were helped by the fact that there was no side that really took the league by the scruff of the neck and dominated and that allowed us back into the league chase later in the season.

SINT MAARTEN CUP

We were in the early part of the season and despite Belvedere being a lower league side the team was just not cut out to go far in this competition, so I accept the defeat that we had in the Quarter Final and don't think we could have done more.

SQUAD

All the signings came in at the end of January and it changed our seaosn completely. Before they came in I could see us getting relegated but with the added reinforcements and with the gap having not become insurmountable we were able to improve drastically.

It was a little surprising that we won the league, but I would bank that we now have the team to do it again and in the cup you never know what could happen. For that reason I feel like it's a good idea to remain for another season and see what we can do.

SEASON 2050/51

KAMPIOENSCHAP VAN SINT MAARTEN

We won the league again this season. I did not feel it was super impressive but it was good enough to win the league by 12 points which is quite a margin. 50 points for the win.

SINT MAARTEN CUP

We won the Sint Maarten Cup, and we did it pretty comfortably. The closest match in the whole run was a tight home win in the semi final to SCSA Eagles where we scored in the second half to win that game. 40 points bagged

SQUAD

This team is still not really expected to win the league, we were expected to finish 4th this season, especially when we got rid of some of the players that weren't getting a game and they wanted to go. However we seem to be getting the job done so all we can say is that the team is more than the sum of its parts.

A great season for us as we pick up a double and we now get to 330 points in this leg and that is now looking pretty good to advance hopefully in the next few seasons. Our time in Oualichi is over, we have won everything we could and we need to move to pastures anew.

We were out of work for about a year after leaving Oualichi before the SXM Crew job came up and were able to get back into management still in Sint Maarten.

We absolutely walked the league for 100 points added to our total.

SINT MAARTEN CUP

We won the cup without much issue for 50 points. Special attention should be paid to the final where we won 11-1 against our former club. Not sure how they live that down.

We added players where we could, simply getting the best of what was offered to us. Quite a few South Americans and African players were acquired to bring the level up.

We won every game this season in the league and we win the league with 8 games to go. The 50 points from this league title is enough to see us through NA11 and on to NA10. So we will be leaving the club.

We had reached the semi final of the cup before we left.

We brought a few new players in but again it was just who was available that our scouts thoughts might be good. No major plan around it just get them in since everyone is on an amateur contract.

ONE CARIBBEAN (BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS)

SEASON 2054/55

We were out of a job for only 4 months before we got our next job which was our first in NA10, and a move to British Virgin Islands, to take up the manager's job at One Caribbean. They had just been promoted to the top division and only had 8 players at the club and no staff so we would have our work cut out to get them ready for the start of the season. The board expecting to challenge for the title despite the fact that we were predicted to finish bottom so that could be a potential banana skin, but I decided to take the job anyway.

BVIFA NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

We managed to take home the title extending our lead right at the end of the league season as Old Madrid started dropping points. We spent a lot of the season joint top. We had a hard start as we just couldn't get many players in and not many with quality but by December we had a very decent squad assembled and it looked like we could kick on and win the league title. We get 100 points for the league win.

PRESIDENT'S CUP

We exited at the first round in the cup. We had a lot of issues early on, so it is understandable. At this point we probably only had 12 players at the club total so it was always going to be tough and we didn't start the league season well.

SQUAD

We had barely any players when we arrived and no staff, so it took a while to be able to bring people in, but we eventually managed it and again by our normal tried and tested method we just got in players that the very questionable scouts thought were better than what we had.

Glad we averted the potential banana skin that was being served up here and managed in the end to at least take home points in the form of the league title. Next season we will go again on all fronts.

ONE CARIBBEAN (BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS)

SEASON 2055/56

BVIFA NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

We got a very comfortable league win this season  as we romped away with the title in the end. Another 50 points.

PRESIDENT'S CUP

This year we got our hands on the President's Cup, we found it easy in the early rounds but by the end of the season we were a bit less dominant and so I was happy we managed to make it over the line in the final against Virgin Gorda.

SQUAD

We continued to improve the squad however we could. The league has a foreigner limit so we had to let some of the non-nationals go where we thought we could do better. Oduko was amazing this season with 29 goals in 19 games and he slowed down on the goals a lot towards the end of the season.

Our time at One Caribbean is done as the points will start to be worth peanuts. We will be leaving and seeing where we land next, hopefully some leaves from the league to take our current job and we can be in a job quickly, but if not it might be a wait. It's been a good start amassing 190 points in two seasons so we are well on our way.

HARLEM UNITED (DOMINICA)

SEASON 2056/57

We left One Caribbean and actually found a job pretty quickly but not in the British Virgin Islands but instead in Dominica and it was a pretty good find. Harlem United were already one of the best sides in Dominica and had a full staff, so that was not a problem for us as it normally was almost everywhere else. The main issue was that the squad was good but very thin and the league had a pretty restrictive 25 man squad with no under age waivers so that could get problematic in the case of injuries.

CABLE & WIRELESS B-MOBILE PREMIERE DIVISION

We achieved perfection in the league with 18 played and 18 won as we found it very easy and ended up winning the league in landslide. 100 points added.

DFA KNOCKOUT CUP

In the cup we had a few hairy moments and close games, perhaps the closest tie being the Quarter Final where we were forced to go to extra time with Bath Estate but managed to find a way to win. The final again wasn't super easy, as we were trailing but a quick double from Lantan got us through in the end. 40 points gained.

SQUAD

A thin squad, we managed to improve the team with the likes of Gyamfi and few Dominican players that were identified by the scouts. We won every game this season so I have no complaints at all with the quality of the squad.

A good season at Harlem United and we will be staying for another as if we can be as dominant again we will be very close to completing the leg.

SEASON 2057/58

CABLE & WIRELESS B-MOBILE PREMIERE DIVISION

We won the league easily, there is still a game to go, but we are leaving the club following the DFA Knockout Cup Final. We did have a draw this season which is the only time in 2 years in Dominica that we dropped points. 50 points won for the league.

DFA KNOCKOUT CUP

A very easy road to the DFA Knockout Cup win. No issue pretty much the whole tournament, and the final was a beatdown against Gully. We left after the cup final. 20 points for the cup win.

SQUAD

There were four Brazilian who were available and scouted, probably had come in as agent offers and they were far superior to the majority of the squad so we brought them in and got rid of some of the other non-national. It just so happens that during the season two of the guys we couldn't rid of became Dominican national as there is a 2 year citizenship so that was handy for more top quality depth. We never lost a game with this team, we only ever drew once for a 97% win percentage.

We are leaving because we got to 400 points, so any league title with a new club completes the leg so we are off to pastures anew. Not sure I would want to go up against Harlem United in Dominica as that could get difficult so hopefully its somewhere else in the region.

We reached the final, but since our goals are achieved we leave before the final.

When we took over the team and it was not that great but we were able to go back to One Caribbean and get Oduko, who was proven in the league, plus we picked up some good prospects that agents brought us and any players that were scouted. We even picked up players from the League Top XI from the season preview.

PAGET LIONS (BERMUDA)

SEASON 2060/61

We were out of work for a fair while. We did have job interview offers, but the first two jobs looked like poisoned chalices, the first job, the club was bottom with only two points with seven or eight games to go and it looked very likely we might get relegated if we went there. The second job was even worse, in the relegation places, three points from safety with one game to play. So we rejected them and eventually at the end of the Bermudian season Paget Lions was available. They were one of the weaker sides in Bermuda, but I felt we could develop the club into title challenger like we had done elsewhere.

CINGULAR WIRELESS PREMIER DIVISION

It was pretty close, but we did manage to win the league in our first season by five points. We started to stutter a little towards the end which brought Dandy Town back into proceedings but in the end we were comfortable enough. 100 points gained.

BERMUDIAN FA CUP

We relied on penalties in the Quarter Final against North Village Rams, so that was fortunate, but apart from that it was plain sailing. I had expected PHC Zebras to be a real challenge in the final as they are probably the best team in the country but we rolled them over pretty easily in the final. Another 50 points.

SQUAD

When we got to the team, it was a small team and lacking a lot of quality, but we got to work in the transfer market and really changed the team again utilising agent offers and anyone our scout could spot, until eventually we had the kind of team that could challenge. On paper the PHC Zebras team is still better than mine, but they weren't very consistent last season. If we can continue to improve the team we will.

A good start to life in NA9 as we pick up 140 points in Bermuda. We will be staying another season to hopefully pick up more points and then we will be thinking about our next job.

SEASON 2061/62

CINGULAR WIRELESS PREMIER DIVISION

We were great this season as we pushed away from the chasing pack. We are undefeated this season in the league and worthy champions. Another 50 points.

BERMUDIAN FA CUP

It was very straightforward for us in the FA Cup as we beat Robin Hood in the final. This would be our final game as manager at the club as we had already secured the league title and all the points on offer this season.

SQUAD

The biggest difficulty we had this season was losing players to other clubs across the world as we are amateur. We would replace the players with new players but some of them wouldn't even last the season. Canela for example ended up our top goalscorer but he only came in a few months ago and has 15 goals in 8 games. A very good squad, trending more and more away from the Bermudian nationals to an international squad, which will inevitably leave in the next few seasons.

Our time at Paget Lions is done and we got all the points we could and we are now nearing the middle point in terms of points for the leg which is great in only two season. We will resign and be looking for our next club.

YMSC BLUEBIRDS (BERMUDA)

SEASON 2062/63

We were out of work only a couple of months before we landed a job on the other side of the island of Bermuda, in the capital city of Hamilton to manage YMSC Bluebirds. They had been promoted during our time at Paget Lions but had survived the drop. They were predicted to finish low down the table but we backed ourselves especially with a very long pre-season to be able to completely transform the clubs fortunes.

CINGULAR WIRELESS PREMIER DIVISION

It may look like it was a pretty easy league title win, but this time it was not the case as with just four games to go PHC Zebras jumped above us in the table. They obviously bottled it completely but we could have lost out here. It was actually pretty tough as we lost 4 games in the league, but in the end we did come through to win it. 100 points to the total.

BERMUDIAN FA CUP

The final was pretty close against Dandy Town, and we needed extra time before we were able to get ahead and eventually we made the result rather lopsided. Happy to win the cup though and another 40 points added to our total.

SQUAD

We had to build the squad all through the season really as we lost players. We again opted for getting international talent through the agents and were able to find some great players. Due to the reputation of the club being poor we were not able to prize away many decent Bermudians from the other top sides to play for us which had worked for us in past. This team did accomplish a double, so I can't moan but we were not that dominant.

A perfect season for points, but there were a few performances that I was not happy with. We will be staying and looking to reinforce to make doubly sure that we get good points next season here at Bluebirds.
