This was one of those games where we weren't really at it which, when we started well and took the lead, is very disappointing.

17 minutes - Jason Knight crossed from the right wing and James Collins headed us in front (1-0).

27 minutes - MK Dons broke forward, Watson passed the ball forward, Haydon Roberts missed his interception and Grant ran into the penalty area and powered a shot past Joe Wildsmith (1-1).

33 minutes - McEachran's free-kick was headed home by Tucker at the far post (1-2).

43 minutes - MK Dons cut us open with a fast, first-touch passing attack, and Kayode scored (1-3).

58 minutes - Grant stretched MK Dons lead further, when Jason Knight failed to cut out Smith's low cross and Grant scored off-the-post (1-4).

We made three substitutions and changed to an Attacking mentality.

61 minutes - Joe Wildsmith made a great save to deny Kayode, Watson got the rebound, crossed to the far post, Grant's shot was blocked by Korey Smith only for Matt Smith to score with a soft tap-in (1-5).

66 minutes - Tom Barkhuizen crossed from the right and substitute Lewis Dobbin headed in our second goal (2-5).

85 minutes - Louie Sibley blazed a shot high over the bar.

After seven straight wins, in all competitions, hopefully this is just a blip and nothing more. We will work hard on the training ground and be ready for our next game.

I thought we played much better than we did against MK Dons last week.

In a game of few chances, there was very little in it but, unfortunately for us, Portsmouth took one of their chances and we didn't take ours.

2 minutes - Conor Hourihane's free-kick is saved by Portsmouth's goalkeeper Griffiths.

18 minutes - David McGoldrick won the ball in midfield, Lewis Dobbin released James Collins but a last ditch tackle took the ball away as Collo was about to shoot.

24 minutes - Joe Wildsmith produced a magnificent save to deny Koroma.

67 minutes - Raggett heads in Lowery's corner (0-1).

We went more Attacking after that without ever really threatening Portsmouth's goal.

What do you think of this Career Update so far?

We're now up-to-date in terms of this save catching up with real-life. My next updates will, effectively, take us into the future...

What are your thoughts thus far?

I'd really value your feedback.

Also, I'd like to thank those of you who are reading this thread, adding likes, and especially those of you who take a few minutes of your valuable time to add comments. It's time consuming to put these updates together and it's only the interaction on here that gives me motivation to keep going.

Best wishes... and thank you.

We don't want to play Louie Sibley at left-back too often but, with Haydon Roberts tweaking his hamstring in training a few days ago, we want to give Haydon a rest if we can.

We're disappointed not to have won this game.

I know I'm biased, but I felt we were the only team trying to win the game and we had more than enough chances to have scored two or three. Unfortunately, we didn't get enough on target to really test their goalkeeper.

Midway through the second half we changed our mentality to Positive from Balanced.

Max Bird clipped the outside of the post in added on time at the end and we knew, then, it wasn't going to be our day.

Bielik out for the season

I'd been thinking about what to do with Krystian Bielik in January - leave him on loan at Birmingham City in the Championship or recalling him and either using him as part of our squad or looking to offload him for a fee.

Now, unfortunately, it's a moot point.

This was very similar to the Burton Albion game in that we had more than enough chances to win the game, but failed to get enough shots on target. Tom BarkhuizenLouie SibleyNathaniel Mendez-LaingMax Bird and James Collins all went close but not close enough.

I'm not going to blame Nat for missing a penalty in the shootout. He was brave enough to stand up and be counted by asking to take one.

Well that was almost the perfect game of football.

We asked our two wing-backs to Attack, rather than Support, we no longer looked to work the ball into the box, and we raised the tempo from lower to standard.

James Collins broke the deadlock in the second minute which gave us all a big boost and he wrapped the points up in the 81st minute with his and our second goal.

We restricted Forest Green to only one shot and that didn't trouble Joe Wildsmith.

The only negative was we lost David McGoldrick and we may be without him for a good while.

Bolton Wanderers v Derby County

League One (23)

23_Bolton_a_pre-press.png.cf259885f1ad2e219295b437d79a90ff.png

We go to the University of Bolton Stadium to play top-of-the-table Bolton Wanderers.

It's going to be a real, tough challenge for us and, at the halfway point of the season, it'll be a litmus test for us as to how close, or not, we are to the team who have been the best in League One so far this season.

As if our injury list isn't long enough already, Jake Rooney was taken ill this week and won't be available for selection.

That's for our fans and I hope it makes their Christmas. The supporters have been magnificent all season, home and away, and I'm sure they enjoyed their Boxing Day.

Lewis Dobbin goal in the second half made the difference and, I know I'm biased, but I thought we thoroughly deserved it.

To go toe-to-toe with the league leaders, in their own Stadium, and to come out on top with the three points is tremendously satisfying.

Unfortunately, though, Tom Barkhuizen picked up an injury. We don't think it's too serious but he's almost certainly out of Thursday's home game against Cambridge United.

23_Bolton_a_injury3.png.2c44c3f411c5da62f46b86d7c5f41c31.png

In the closing minutes, Bolton showed why they are top of the league and we were holding on.

We made some defensive changes and saw out the game for a fantastic victory.

Derby set to lose Haigh and Kavanagh

23a_loans_expiring1.png.a4e4af7a8e9f9973bb810dc39a271bf1.png

We've tried to extend the loans of Joe Haigh (Chelsea) and Leigh Kavanagh (Brighton and Hove Albion) but their parent clubs want to test them in a different environment in the second half of the season.

We rate both players highly and will continue to monitor them.

We won't be getting carried away after our Boxing Day win at top-of-the-table Bolton Wanderers.

Cambridge United are 11th, but I'm sure they will come to Pride Park and make things very difficult for us.

24_Cambridge_H_injury1.thumb.png.89e72099b7f93ba5be4c0800f25c9783.png

Some good news. Our captain, Curtis Davies, returned to training this week and Jake Rooney has recovered from his illness.

24_Cambridge_H_report.png.eb26c7a502de10b81a2bbff947750db7.png

Wow! What a game that was. We're delighted to have won, against the odds after going down to 10-men on 24 minutes, and the players worked unbelievably hard to emerge victorious.

Conor Hourihane lost his head and dived in two-footed from behind. I know he was going for the ball but he left the referee no other decision than to produce a red card.

We immediately dropped Louie Sibley back to play alongside Max Bird.

Incredibly, a minute later, we were in front. Lewis Dobbin burst through the centre, played the ball out wide to Haydon Roberts, who took the ball down the left wing, crossed low into the box, and James Collins was there to side-foot the ball home (1-0).

We then changed our mentality from Balanced to Cautious but, on 36 minutes, Eiran Cashin made a rash tackle in the penalty area and Cambridge equalised from the spot (1-1).

After that we went back to Balanced and, on 56 minutes, Liam Thompson made a brilliant run down the left, crossed the ball into the penalty area, and James Collins headed his second goal of the game (2-1).

24_Cambridge_H_injury3.png.a863c8e1314ecb6e180ae172368fa4c8.png

Unfortunately, we lost Korey Smith when he felt a tightness in his calf.

Cambridge were putting us under a lot of pressure and we went Defensive for the last 14 minutes.

24_Cambridge_H_tactics2.png.6d507e22741348459ac1a09139ccc2f5.png

It was a very tense, nervous game for us, but I'm so proud of the players for their magnificent effort against the odds.

Happy New Year, Derby County fans!

Derby County v Accrington Stanley

League One (25)

Happy New Year!

We welcome Accrington Stanley to Pride Park Stadium this New Years Day.

I know Accrington are rock bottom of League One but we have to put that out of our minds. We have to treat them with the respect they deserve and prepare for this match as we would any other.

25_Accrington_H_suspension.png.c5f44173a3c7f08fac6add0aebd409ee.png

We'll be without Conor Hourihane after his red card against Cambridge United.

Our squad is looking healthier, not just in terms of players returning from injury, or about to return to training, but also because we've finally been able to register our free agent signings and brought a couple of players in as permanent or loan signings as well.

I'll probably be handing out a few debuts today, or second debuts in the case or Andre WisdomArchie BrownFesty Ebosele and Jahmal Hector-Ingram who all know this football club very well.

Since the career ending injury to Craig Forsyth, we haven't been able to allow Haydon Roberts any time time to rest so we'll probably take the opportunity to make a change at left-back so that Haydon can get some well deserved rest.

I thought we were very good value for the win today.

James Collins bagged yet another brace, and Simone Zaza came off the bench and scored an outrageous individual goal, winning the ball in the centre circle, running with it all the way into the penalty area, before audaciously chipping the ball over the goalkeeper.

It did get a bit tense though at 1-1 and we had to change our shape and mentality a bit to make sure we stayed on the front foot.

I don't want to say too much but that was never a penalty to Accrington. If that's a push by Festy Ebosele that warrants a penalty then we should be seeing ten penalties a match.

I was delighted with our performance today and very happy with the efforts from the new players.

What a way for our supporters to welcome in the New Year.

Port Vale v Derby County

League One (26)

Port Vale may be 19th, but they are at home and have just appointed Garry Monk as manager.

So we have to go there and be very aware of a potential new manager bounce.

After the way we played against Accrington after Simone Zaza came on, I am considering a change in our playing approach and shape for this match.

Once or twice a season you get a football match that is instantly forgettable. This was one of those, I'm afraid.

The 4-2-4 DM Wide wasn't really working so we changed to our more accustomed 4-2-3-1 DM AM Wide.

I also thought Max Bird was too deep as a HB so we changed his role to DM.

Cheltenham Town v Derby County

Conor Hourihane will miss his third, and final game of his suspension, so he will be back in contention for the Bolton game next weekend.

Unfortunately, Max Bird went down with flu this week and Simone Zaza picked up an ankle ligaments injury.

With Simone ruled out, I think we'll need to revert back to our usual 4-2-3-1 DM AM Wide formation.

On the plus side, our captain Curtis Davies is ready to rejoin a matchday 18 after his achilles injury.

That's more like it. After three away games without a win, we've now won our last two.

I thought all 16 players we used put in a fantastic shift.

Archie Brown produced a wonderful cross from the left-wing for Tom Barkhuizen to give us the lead.

Liam Thompson, who I thought was excellent deputising for Max Bird, scored the second goal all by himself, pressing into their penalty area, winning the ball back, then coolly slotting it past the goalkeeper.

Defensively, we were right on it, and I think Joe Wildsmith only had to make one save all game.

Stearman snubs Shrewsbury

With Richard Stearman starting to look like he's past his best, and having signed a few defenders, we thought we'd arranged a transfer to Shrewsbury Town for him for a nominal fee.

Unfortunately, Stears couldn't agree personal terms and he remains here.

Derby County v Bolton Wanderers

League One (28)

Bolton Wanderers are top of League One for a reason, they are a very good team. We may have won 1-0 at their place on Boxing Day but that only makes them an even more difficult opponent as they will be looking to put the record straight.

We are going to have to be at our very best at Pride Park against Bolton, and then some. We need our wonderful fans to get behind us more than ever.

The big blow this week was our number one goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith tearing knee ligaments in training. We now have five players out injured, including new signing Matej Vydra who is still recovering from damaged cruciate ligaments. We will need to be patient and take our time with Matej.

We're going to try hitting early crosses against Bolton.

We were outstanding today. To do the double over the best team in League One, currently, in Bolton Wanderers is amazing. Our fans were magnificent today and gave the players a massive lift from first whistle to last.

It was a tight game of few chances but I thought we had the better opportunities, we were certainly more clinical than Bolton.

James Collins  was ruthless in front of goal when he gave us the lead five minutes before half-time.

Unfortunately, we lost Louie Sibley to a bruised thigh just before the break, allowing Conor Hourihane to return after his suspension.

28_Bolton_injury4.png.94eef854a51956f195a53e20c26f5b97.png

Conor Hourihane showed us what we'd been missing when he doubled our lead, firing a pile-driver low into the bottom corner from 25-yards.

28_Bolton_westwood-post.png.6174d1c5566b3cd6afdc7a66a42b318c.png

We defended very well and Keiren Westwood didn't have that much to do on his debut.

We tried hitting early crosses today but that wasn't really working. We scrapped it after about half-an-hour.
