Midfield pairing advice for a 4-3-3/4-1-2-2-1

Recommended Posts

Hi! i started my first season with a midfield pairing of a Defensive mid, box to box and DLP. with wing backs and two inside forwards in front of them. my first season went really well in the league, finishing second with arsenal. The mid pairing also did very well with my box to box player partey doing very well, getting assists and goals and having a good partnership/cohesion with my DLP. ( so my tactics board screen said anyway )

the next season though i did worse in the league, and my box to box player was also not performing as well as previous season. the tactics board also started saying there were issues with my DLP, not quite jelling. less goals and assists too. So i understand that i overachieved my first season but i was looking at how i could improve the issues i had. Then after a little looking around online, i saw comments from people that a box to box player could be problematic with inside forwards, that they could get in eachothers way.

When i first set my team up, i didnt see it that way, i thought in my head it would work out quite nicely and they would link up pretty well but after my second season results, i wasnt so sure anymore. so im here to ask what you think could work out better? or do you disagree with some of those comments that its likely to be a problem with my OG set up of the midfield with the inside forwards?

i was thinking maybe a CENTRAL MID on support instead if that is the problem.if you agree, what player would you suggest to take a look at? BTW i do not want to change my inside forwards, i love inside forwards, probably my 2nd favourite type of role in the game.

I play with BBM and with an AM too and one IF and a IW at the side of the BBM so they don't stay at the same space and the team goes rather well. I also play with WB. Not sure if it's optimal though, but I use short passing and it works fine.

Depends how attacking you want to be in the midfield; I've got a FB on Support to provide additional defensive support and cover along with my DLP/D to hopefully cut out any counter attacks. In front of that I use a MEZ on Support and a CM on Attack. Creates a lot of central attacking impetus.

I'd say a CM(S) is worth a try for sure. The DLP will look to hold back in that central midfield slot, switching that role to a CM(S) will have him get a bit for forward in supporting play. I assume you have a DM(D) so use him as your midfield anchor & let the two CMs be the ones that get forward from midfield.

You could even flip that DLP into a AP if you still want a playmaker in your team & it plays to the player's strengths
