I would argue that he isn't past it... But the rest of your post still stands. 

However, the marketing opportunities that this brings are definitely beneficial. It's not like he's going to be playing any competitive games, but have him play some friendlies or testimonial-sequel games. Have his shirt in the club store, and his face in some social media posts. 

We've all been there where we've signed a player past their best, and made the transfer fee back in shirt sales.

He's sponsoring the shirts this season so he's partly paying the wages.
