I finally have my B team in a playable league.  I had to remove and then re-add the lower leagues in Spain and wait a year.  Now I can properly use my B team for youth development which will be even more important for my Lezama only save. 

Last year I sold all the Basque players that I brought into the squad and without a B team or a C team playing I had to let a lot of players leave on loan so there development was not stilted.  I also let a lot of bit part players leave the B team.  The overall effect of this is my first team and B team being low on numbers so some youngsters are getting game time earlier than planned and I am looking to bring some previously rejected players (with good personalities) to support the structure if I can do this cheaply.  Only the truly terrible will be leaving the club for the next couple of years.

We have finished another season.  Another season in first place pipping Real Madrid.

We also had success in the European Champions Cup and the Spanish Cup so no complaints with the season.  The squad was a little threadbare at times with lots of the players needing multiple holidays/rests.  Bringing back Nico Williams for a hefty £85 million in January definitely helped but I'm looking to promote a few players previously on loan to bolster the numbers to ease this issue next year.

The formation for last year was tweaked to reflect that I sold my non-Athletic full backs and the options available are much more limited in terms of attacking play so after a little tinkering with the defensive line and some shaky defending in the early stages we moved to fullbacks from wingbacks and we were much more solid.

I have been complaining about my future goalkeeping situation for a while.  in my youth intake I did get a keeper this year who might fill a hole.  Dunabeitia will need to do a little developing in the next five years to take over from Simon.  

I also got a couple of good young prospects through for defence.  I may see if Goiria can do a job in defensive midfield as he looks a little short for centre half.

Zapirain could be a fullback or centre half.   

They will go into the stable of youngsters and will hopefully be ready for first team action in a 3 to 5 years.

great to hear i've loved reading up on the Lezema save you have going! i wasn't brave enough to jump in there just yet as my first time doing bilbao!

So another 2 seasons done and thought i would do an update! 

so season before i had an average season finishing 4th and going out in champions league knockouts to liverpool and a poor cup run left me without any silverware.

 

This was down mostly to having Villalibre as my attacking outlet i believe and Inaki Williams getting 6 goals all season wasn't very helpful.

Next season i brought through a kid with some pace and finishing to get in behind and went a lot more attacking against the lower teams and overall had an amazing season! (in the league)

Unfortunately i have lost 12 and drawn 2 against Madrid who have knocked me out of the cup 3 times and Barcelona the other cup. I beasted Feynoord in the knockouts only to then lose on aggregate to Sevilla in the quarter finals because Icardi seems to have a personal vendetta against me. 

 

The change in form came mostly due to Serrano with a few more years has really started to come along but this guy is just absolutely unbelievable! 42 goals in all comps at 18 years old leading my front line with room still to grow i have a real player on my hands here.

 

I also have some players poking into my first team this season i'm looking forward to using. hopefully i can really kick on and learn how to beat real madrid so i can get a chance of any domestic success.

 

A shout out to the award winner Ilias Akhomach this year too!! Even though second fiddle to Nico Williams.

Thanks.  That's a phenomenal result against Feyenoord.  Miguel Alonso looks like he could be quite a player.  Nico Serrano never quite worked for me.  If you keep plugging away when those kids come through you should clean up.

@AlfieGillard Your Nico Williams is miles better than he's ever been in any of my saves! I usually sell him by the time he's 23 because he's never kicked on anything like what he's done for you.

Yeah ive noticed a lot of people not having much luck with him I'm post latest update which apparently he got a bump on but yeah he has been amazing for me

Great season again and I feel very optimistic about the coming years. We have over the last to seasons changed the team alot cause many of the players either didnt have the quality anymore, or wanted a new challenge. We have almost removed 10 players and have a more fresh and younger side now with alot of talent. 

We won the league again but it was more close than it looks. Barca and Real havent bought very good players, so only 87 points were enough - quite amazing and a record low in my game.

We also won the Champions League after beating RB Leipzig 2-1 in the final and the Spanish Cup after beating Elche in the Cup - Elche are quite good in my game and have some good seasons the last years.

A have wrote before about a young goalkeeper and he is now a full member of the firstteam despite only being 17. He is dubbed the new "Andoni Zubizaretta" so not a presure at all Other than that we are huge in China for some reason and invited to play a tournament there - No idea how that happened The last thing is that we will be getting the biggest stadium in the league with San Mamès getting over 100,000 seats

This is amazing!!! how long did it take you to start properly dominating like that? also is this a youth academy only or also spainish 16 yr olds??

The first years i won the title once a while but from about 2027 we started to dominate for real with 4 league titles in a row and from 2028 we won cl 3 Times in a row. After that we had 3-4 years before we had a real strong side again cause had to build a strong side again. 
 

Its more or less a lezema save but have bought to players one in sociedad and one in alaves. Simply because my scout  told me to sign Them no matter what and the clubs “forgot” to give Them a pro contract 😂😂😂

haha well they are local lads at least! and not on a pro contract it feels like lezema would be happy with it! sounds like you're pretty great at the game haha i have gone with spanish kids and youth intakes as ive never done a limited transfers save but i cant for the life of me buy a victory against real or athletico ive won like 1 in my last 12 against madrid and maybe beat athletico twice. knock me out of every cup and batter me in the league. been top 4 all 4 seasons and looking like i will be there with relative ease again but not able to test that title yet it seems

Well it’s tuff against Those teams away, but play a different tactic in these games it Works well for me. But yeah it’s a great game with Them and lots of talents 😏

Another Season done and same old story!

In the league i was ok first half was leaking way too many goals took a while buy managed to strike a great balance and finished really strong unfortunately Real and Barcelona are just ridiculously strong still although my youth coming through will trash them in 2 or 3 seasons. Unfortunately PSG knocked me out in the knock out rounds, i won 1-0 at home then was 1-0 ahead before a red card meant they dismantled me with easy for 70 mins and i lost 4-2 on agg. i went out in the cup to a 3rd div team and i still have no idea how no matter what i did with a relatively strong team out they kept attacking me i had nothing.

 

Miguel Alonso has pushed on from last year showing himself to be becoming a truly formidable striker that will lead us to glory at some point!

 

I had some more players come through and do well. The usuals such as sancet, nolaskian, munuain, nico williams, capa, simon, martinez, yeray and serrano all play very important parts of my squad. Here are the players that broke through into first team this year though.

 

I think these players can help me really push on next season as the second half of my season was stronger due to players being more experienced and more acustomed to football at this level.

Great save this and one of my best players in my game is my captain Chechu who also have won "Ballon D`or" and a player its very hard to play without. Look at these stats - only bad season were in 2032 where he broke his leg and were out for 5 months, but it went well afterall

 

When you have a long game you will have players with alot of games. I got Inigo Valencia who are killing alot of records. 727 games for Athletic and only 7 games from beating Iker Munains record at 502 league games.

 

Last but not least i`ll show my biggest talent I think he is, Just promoted him to the first team despite only being 16, but I think it will go well

Thats awesome! chechu looks like he has been a unit for you! i am finding it so difficult just to get the trophies at the moment just falling short every trophy. need my youth to become the experienced! but you save looks fun i assume you are doing a lezema save?

Yeah almost Think i have bought 3 players in soon 19 Years 😀😀😀😀This summer we sold players for about 175 mio € but the new fresh talents are playing amazing allready!

FINALLY!!! I have emerged as La Liga champion at last!! 2026 was my year. I was 8 points clear at the mid way point but all looked lost in march as real madrid took the lead. They had a shocking last 4 games and i came away winning the league! Unfortunately a poor exit to Milan in knockouts means i still haven't managed to surpass that point. I was beating valencia in the semi final of supercopa only to make 2 changes to shore up the lead and get 3 injuries in 6 minutes leading me to lose in Extra time with 9 men. The copa del rey came after back to back loses to milan valencia and mardrid and morale was low unfortunately we got battered in that which left us only the league to concentrate on which i think actually did us a favour!!

 

This league win was due to another absolutely dominant display from Alonso again who won: European golden boy, La liga top goalscorer, La liga best player, fans player players player. He scored 41 in all comps and just seems unstoppable!

I also had some kids that really stepped up and showed they are ready to help me become a dominant force in football with them at the heart of it with players like Alonso, Williams, Alkhomach, llabres, azon, urganga, and martinez:

I wanted to give a shout out to a youth player who managed a massive 55 assists during the season also!

 

I'm hoping i can really push on to cement my name into spanish football folklore here and become a legend at the club and create the new age of the basque country!

Wow thats really cool! i'm hoping next time i do the save i will limit it more and more until im good enough to do lezema saves or youth academy challenge level etc! sounds like an amazing way to play and need to be so much better at the game than if you can assemble a great squad!

Don't stop.  I love reading about all things Athletic particularly Football Manager related.  It is great to see people getting stuck into Athletic saves and more than any most clubs it lends itself to interesting stories.

Nico Williams has been good for me before he went to PSG and Man Unite and now I'm banking on him leading the team to further glory.

Chechu looks like quite a player.  It is amazing the number of appearances your players have made.  Muniain is my record holder with 514  appearances.  I think I have youngsters which should eclipse him but those are some serious numbers.  How do you view those figres?

Congratulations.  It is great when your youngsters start to break into the first team and you create your piece of history.

Choose Club info then under history i Think it is and then choose best eleven. Yeah there are some very Big ones would be fun if someone reached 1000 games but not sure if it’s realistic.  But you also need a bit of luck cause sometimes they Want a new Challenge before they are 30 years and then their games are not so High

Thanks.  1000 would be huge.  I have some very small numbers.  It is impacted as it is only for the time I  have been managing (8 years) so numbers for some like Muniain and Yeray are low.  Even so there is some work to be done to match your numbers.

I'm currently preparing for the start of the 2028-29 season.  My pre-season has been severely hampered by the Olympics.  Spain under 23s won gold which meant that 8 of my (small) first team squad were unavailable until 6th August.  This has impacted on preparations and may mean that I need to rest some of the players through the season.  The testimonial for Unai Simon had to be cancelled because he was not going to make it back in time to take part.  I shall reschedule this for next year.

As well as Simon, Spain had a further seven of my brightest prospects

I've promoted a couple of youngsters to my first team squad.  I am slightly spoilt for choice in centre midfield.  Gorka Agirrezabala has a very promising future and Gorka Etxabe will do nicely for a year or two until a couple of the even more talented youngsters are ready to come in to the team.

 

The B team has been set up ready for a tilt at the Second Division Pro A and promotion to the Second Division.  The team has a very young average age but contains the usual mix of older hands on the wane (Kepa Arrizabalaga), squad fillers, youngsters which will be moved to the first team squad in a year or two (Fernando Martinez and Dani Iglesias) and the very young.  I'm very (sadly) excited about watching the B team this season in competitive football.

I'm a little concerned about the mercenary personality of Iglesias.  Has had anyone had any success with mentoring and changing personalities.  I am aware of the basics regarding mentoring.  I have not had too many strong mentors and I never had much luck with those that I have had.  Determination improves sometimes but I never get any improvement in Professionalism.  I would welcome any super tips.

Crazy all these are coming through your youth system you must be really good with training etc. i have managed to change personalities from mentoring but doesnt always work.

I've been lucky with players coming through although most of them are in midfield.  I try to spend some time on training in general and focussed on youngsters.

The most success ive had is when they are younger having 2 experienced players in that position or playing style mentoring the 1 younger kid 

 

the earlier i do it the more chance of changing their personality from experience. So brining through a fickle 16 year old and having 2 experienced determined guys mentoring and them available for u19s games seems to work well.

Another season done. Quite underwhelming after the title win unfortunately real have brought in Mbappe and greenwood which really kicked them on, i was unfortunate in europe to go out in the semi to chelsea in a very even matched tie. I finally won the super copa but after many tries of the copa del rey i cant seem to crack it, i have gone out twice now to liga 2 and below teams whilst playing first team and actually trying which is very annoying but it is what it is. 

 

 

Miguel Alonso continues to dominate world football right now picking up another european golden boy and young player of the season. moriba took top goalscorer as he became barcelonas first choice striker and annoyingly got 3 of those against me. but 43 goal striker is quite amazing either way! 

Nico wiliams has continued to be one of my stars pulling in fans player and players player this season with some amazing form.

Domestically back on top! a great season from me promoted a few of the lads and managed to take the title back from real madrid! Alonso pivotal again as he scored 32 league goals to help me along the way and nico williams with a 7.55 average rating didn't harm my chances! i managed to come away with the Supercopa beating real and Barca to win it. I managed my first champions league final unfortunately getting dominated by an amazing man city squad. A domestic double and a champions league final i will take as some serious progress!!

 

As you can see Alonso was very much a reason that we managed to dominate so much and i had this happen for the first time ever. a clean sweep as the undisputed greatest player on the planet! He came away with Ballon d'or, fifa best player, world player of the year and european player of the year all in the same year!!

Here aresome of the promoted boys that really played a big part this season and helped us really push on!

And here are some of the boys i have promoted this season after impressive loans and developments.

Here we go for next year!! a year older a year more experience enough to help us start wining some european trophies maybe

As you can see Alonso was very much a reason that we managed to dominate so much and i had this happen for the first time ever. a clean sweep as the undisputed greatest player on the planet! He came away with Ballon d'or, fifa best player, world player of the year and european player of the year all in the same year!!

Here aresome of the promoted boys that really played a big part this season and helped us really push on!

And here are some of the boys i have promoted this season after impressive loans and developments.

Here we go for next year!! a year older a year more experience enough to help us start wining some european trophies maybe

 

Congratulations.  You manage to get through your seasons quickly.  I'm pleased you have managed to win back the title.   With that group of youngsters you could dominate for a long time,  If you have not done so, I'd make sure that the minimum release clauses are sufficiently prohibitive, even if it costs you a fortune.

My young goalkeeper has had to make his debut considerably earlier than planned.  An injury crisis with three keepers out meant that he was thrown into action at the age of 15 in a disappointing draw where he kept a clean sheet.

yesh everyone half decent has like 120m minimum fee apart from alonso who has 500m haha. and yeah been off due to covid so been playing like 14 hours a day through that time haha will slow down from this weekend when im allowed out of the house again lol. and thanks! i feel the domestic domination starting now but i am a serial champs league loser haha ive lost like 15 finals in fm21 of champs leagueand won around 3. its very frustrating and i dont know how to improve final performance

oh wow 3 silver stars and managed a clean sheet is unreal your defence and tacitic must be defensively impenetrable

He had two shots to save and ended on a 7.1 so respectable.  I thought  it was going to be a bit of a struggle but it  was a fairly drab game to be honest.  Padilla was in goal for them and it was the first time I missed him.

so another season done, i managed to win back the la liga! i also managed my first copa del rey win which means I've won everything domestically now and i won a double last year. Unfortunately Real ran away with another champions league win (their 3rd in 5 years) beating me in the semi finals. Out of 6 games today i won 2 lost 2 and drew 2 so was just unfortunate the loss came when it did. 

Miguel Alonso once again came away with the 3 worlds best player awards available with a bunch of goals too! I had a few players make their way into the first team squad that made a great impact and look like they could really challenge for a starting place this season. 

Also i have managed in mid July to see my finances in a more than healthy status!

For the upcoming season i have made 3 promotions to help us next season, players i believe to be future stars!

So a new season finished and after 8 straight league titles we came down to earth again by Real Madrid after our amazing players in this generation dont really have the quality anymore, so now starting to build a new powerteam!

We still have a few of our old players left they got at age 37 still one year left on their contract and im not selling them now My leftback Valencia is on 857 games and Chechu our captain is on 843 games - I really hope that they will become good coaches or something like that

And when we say big figures - I reached 1300 games in charge in Athletic - its massive

Amazing achievement at 1300 games congratulations! I am having trouble with Real mdird, they have just spent nearly 400m trying to regain the title from me whilst i sit with 430m budget and nobody worth spending it on! super impressive you managed so much domination with lezema only though!

Wow. 1,300 games at Athletic is massive.  Congratulations.  

I'm sorry to see the league go to Real but I'm looking forward to  hearing about the transition to the new powerteam.

Congratulations on the league title.  I always find the champions league harder/less predictable.  One bad game can ruin the season.  You still have a very young team though.

@AlfieGillard I assume your Argentine player has Spanish second nationality? Did you sign him at 16? Unless he's switched nationality, I'm surprised he would have been eligible.

It’s about 23 seasons but Will be taking a little break or not play it so much. Will be trying to make Newcastle as the new powerteam In England
