Before qualifiers and friendly matches, the squad announcement is usually a week-and-a-half (maybe two weeks) before your first match. For major tournaments, you usually have to name a preliminary squad four weeks beforehand, and a final squad two weeks before. That's going off my experience from FM17, anyway.
