The Late Run In

Having been predicted to finish rock bottom of the league it was a case of damage limitations and not be the whipping boys of the league and return back to where we came from. If we manage to be 8th or above then it would be a miracle as this season wont be anything like the fairy tale that we enjoyed last season.

It seemed the champagne was still in our throat at the start of the season as we struggled to even get anywhere in this league and it seemed we were heading back where we came from but things had to change, quickly!

Despite having made some summer signings it wasnt until after October when more came in that we started to see a turn around in our fortunes, it was just a case of improving the quality of what we already have at the club in certain positions.

Eventually we found our footing, unfortunately just a bit too late but from 8th place we slowly moved up the table which then included a thrilling finale to the end of the season which was us beat Neil´s Peterhead and not only frog leap them in the league but also push us into the play off positions, with results going our way for us and elsewhere it was an amazing run which ended with us unexpectantly snap up the last play off place out of no-where!

We ended up facing Queens Park in the Play Offs, having enjoyed a few good results against them this season we fancied our chances despite being the underdog to the million men. But it seemed to be a tight game which eventually we lost with results of 2-1 and 1-1, which is not too disappointing considering how we started the season!

However what we can take from this season is that we were the Challenge Cup Runners up, having beaten the likes of Fergs Dumbarton along the way we faced Raith in the Final, it took until extra time for them to scrape the winner out of this game, some would say undesevered as we made all the running and should have easily won, but my excuse is the jet lag on the way to the cup final which was being held in no other places than Greece!

Transfers

We´ve managed to bring in some relative known players this season which was quite a suprise and the quality of the squad obviously was pushed up a lot.

We captured the likes of Juanjo, an experienced spanish midfielder, who also just didnt get in the squad much and was released at the end of the season.

Sheff Wed attacking mid Luke Boden came in aswell as Dele Adebola, who despite 37 still seems to be smashing them in and has a big physical presence, hopefully someone to push Noel-Williams. Shane Duff and Zesh Rehman came in to bolster the defence and Newcastle Italian youngster Fabio Zamblera joined in to see if he can fulfill his potential.

Young attacking mid Billy Clarke joined during the season aswell as new No1 keeper St. Louis-Hamilton who managed to put his name first on the team sheet and has even had interest from Crystal Palace and Bristol City.

Veteran striker Chris Greenacre ended his Australian adventure to join us but only for a few months, unfortunately the desired effect I had hoped for didnt work but it was worth a punt, signing of the season was most probably though Dino Toppmöller, the german attacking mid has been sensational for us!

Although i cannot forget that we also signed at the end of last season the likes of Demba Toure who is a speedy winger and will be pushing Downes all the way for his place in the first XI.

Parting Ways

We parted way with some players of course, especially at the end of the season as contracts were running out, age and earnings all needed to be taking into consideration for what we want in the future and also what will be good enough for this league.

Paul Currie, Craig O´Reilly, Mark Peat and Tagro all left the club at the start of the season and they were joined at the end of the season by Alexis Nikolas, who has now moved to Staines. Kevin McLeod and Mark McVeigh had been inspirational but age and their wages where not on their side so it was best to part ways and we wish them luck in the future!

Whats Next?

Well we need to build on our sensational season and make sure that the continue continues to come in and that this season is gonna be just as difficult as last if not more, we need to avoid the drop, we cant even be thinking about that, personally another play off place/top half finish should certainly be possible but this league is so tight and unpredictable, anything can happen!

Out with the Old and In with the....

The new season is upon us and its time to build on what we achieved last season, as overarchievers we have to make sure that this coming season isnt one in which we feel over confident but one from which we need to take our end of season form into the new and try and build the stature of the club, we had an amazing cup run but id much rather make sure we succeed in the league, the class difference between this league and the one above is huge but so are the rewards.

Pre-season actually didnt see as much change as some might have expected, whilst some teams signed over 500 players to fulfill their quota and increase stadium attendances, I was actually happy with the overall core of the squad, with most players just adding experience to their years and a squad pretty much ready to go, however, a few changes were needed over the summer months and some players also just had to leave as they were no longer wanted.

Transfers

Due to my assistant who also has now left the club having had his contract terminated, we got a replacement in of course, we found that Downes has signed a contract elsewhere, although it may sound like a huge loss to the team I have to admit, it was actually good that he left as Toure has been immense down the right wing and its gonna take a hell of a player to shift him from that position.

Darren Gribben finally left as he never got a game and alongside him we let go of Zamblera, although the potential is there he just didnt live upto it, maybe we didnt give him enough chances but we dont have the time to either, he eventually signed for Jonnys East Stirlingshire side.

Also the two veteran strikers left, Chris Greenacre left for Salisbury and Dele Adebola at the grand old age of 37 leaves for Rochdale, he has had his moment and filled in nicely for Noel-Williams but neither of the front men ever really fufilled the task Noel-Williams did in the previous season, a striker with that killer instinct, who knows where the net is and finds it on a regular basis is what we need.

We signed Justin Thompson, an experienced Canadian International to bolster the backline, backup is needed here as we seem a bit short, the lad also brings fantastic hight into the backline and at set pieces.

But our struggling department seemed up front and we´re aiming to sort that out too, on a bargain free from Ayr we sign former Liverpool youth Nikola Saric, although maybe not upto Division 1 standard, the Danes lightening pace is certainly one to cause trouble at this level and thats the aim.

Experienced striker Carlos joins him, at 34 not the youngest but an all round ability and someone who if he settles can certainly rattle in a few more before his career end, but that is my only fear, that he wont settle and we never get to see the true Carlos.

But the bargain and biggest signing despite being 38 years old is the one and only former PSV, Ajax and Sheff Wednesday striker Gerarld Sibon, although age might not be on his side we are talking about the Scottish Second Division and considering his age, his ability is still ever presence, at a giant 6´5 the man is more than a target man, hopefully Sibon can show the youngsters in the squad a thing or two before his retirement, for now though we´re hoping he scores a few or at least using his ability to assist to great affect!

So not many ins or outs but thats keeping things on budget and thats where we want to be heading, a clean financial bill is the way forward for the club and hopefully we can cement a regular place in this league from which we can build upon.

Airdrie United: Giant Killers

airdrie_united_crest.gif

The start of Ed Kelley's second year of his second reign at Airdrie could not have started any better. In their final friendly of the preseason, Airdrie hammered SPL side Kilmarnock 4-0! The win made confidence sky high at New Broomfield. The first round of the challenge and league cup were also very kind to the diamonds, with wins against division two side Berwick. The 4-2 win rocked manager Steve Gold who was at a loss for words after the incredible match that saw Kelley's side win 4-2. Even the debut of a certain dutch superstar, who missed an opening minute penalty, could not swing the favor for Berwick.

The Diamonds are also off to a tremendous start in the third division of Scotland, unbeaten in 8 games. They have won 6 and drawn only 2. New French goalkeeper Martini has been receiving many compliments from his manager and teammates having only conceded a total of 4 goals all season! The keeper, who was deemed surplus by Queens Park Rangers manager Davie Orr, has shined down in the third division. We would have interviewed him for this piece but we do not speak French, and they tell us he does not speak English. They did however grant us an interview with manager Ed Kelley

Mr. Kelley, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions.

No problem, it is always a pleasure to discuss the team when we have has this much success.

About that success, what do you attribute it to?

I believe that this team is built perfectly for the third division. We have some good veteran players, along with many great young ones. The signing of our new keeper, Martini, has been better than anyone could have of expected. He has been incredible for us to start the season, making no mistakes and saving almost everything that has come at him. Our new strikers have also stepped up their game, as you can see we now lead the league in goals scored, a feet unheard of by a club that I have managed.

What has been your approach this season that could account for these dramatic increases in offensive out put?

I have decided to keep my tactics simple this season, no last minute tweaking, no advice from the forums, and definitely no panicking when going down in the match. I found that the simpler you keep it in the division, the easier it is for your players to adapt and succeed.

You must be pleased with your teams early performance in the cups?

I am, but i never expected us to do as well as we have. Defeating opponents from higher division has given this team a huge rush of confidence. I think it has helped out league performance, without the early success in the cups i do not see our league record the way it is.

After your team's great start, you must be thinking about promotion?

Now now, lets not get ahead of ourselves. This is a long season, and there is still a long way to go. We are only up by 3 points at the moment and as you are certainly aware, things can change every week. Promotion is the last thing on my mind, I am just worried about our next opponent.

Your loyalty to teams has always been a question, so how are you feeling right now about staying at Airdrie?

My long term plan is to stay at Airdrie as long as they will have me. I am loving it here right now and have no plans on looking elsewhere. I am 100% committed to the diamonds.

So now what are your hopes for the rest of the season?

First, we have to keep winning games. The only way to ensure promotion is to win, and not have to worry about what your opposition is doing. I feel that this club has what it takes to win the league. I have out together a great squad with great players who are capable of doing great things. My only fear is injuries, which are bound to happen, so I have tried to sign back up players who can step right in and fill the void if any of the first 11 go down. I am confident in every player on this squad, or else they would not be here. If we stick to our tactics and continue to play the way we are playing, great things are in store for the Aridrie United Football Club.

Martin put the phone down and turned to his faithful hounds, Jonny and Joe, and said:

Eastliegh, now where the fook is that boys

"Hampshire, down south, southern softy land. God they won't understand a thing I say."

So armed with the latest must have Satnav, Martin headed off. The introduction to the staff and the stadium were brief. It was the pits, and so were the staff, no wonder they got booted from the BSP. And so Martin began the rebuilding process, enlisting a number of fellow Scots, just so he had someone to talk to, including Gregor Robertson and Paul Nugent, two quality full backs for the BSS, and Bobby Donnelly, once of Ayr. Also added to the back line was the towering CB Mat Mitchell-King from Crewe. The other Scot to join at the start of the season was old pal Stephen McConalogue, a man who started at Dundee Utd, but who Martin found playing for Sutherland Sharks in Australia. Most of the previous squad were sold/released, as were the staff.

The season started brightly with 3 wins on the bounce, but 2 straight defeats dimmed the brightness considerably. And so, another bit of wheeling and dealing saw Martin sign experienced Cameroonian Buba Yohamm to stiffen up the midfield and former Wolves trainee Aaron Monaghan to replace AJ Murray between the sticks. Despite losing out to Carshalton after a replay in the FA Cup Qualifying rounds, form improved in the league with the team only losing one match in the next 5, moving ponderously up the table into 2nd place. Early days with another 31 games to go, many points to be won or lost.

Gonna be a long season, however the Eastligh faithful will be hoping that it's a successful one.

Stranraer appoint Unknown Engish Manager!!

Robert Knott was today confirmed Manager of Scotish division 3 side Stranraer on a 2 year deal. Bemused fans lined up outside Stair Park to witness the appointment of the unknown english manager. Many fans angry and voicing there disgust with the chairman for putting the clubs ambition of a top half finish at risk. Knott seemed unfazed by the bad reception from the gathering crowd and went inside to do his first press confrence as the boss of Stranraer.

You sit here today confirmed as Stranraer boss... How do you feel?

Im delighted to be given my first management job in football, would rather have wished for a chance in England due to uprooting my family out of school etc but i cant grumble. Its a great club with foundations to play at a higher level.

Many Fans are wondering what plans you have in mind for there club?

I've had a look at video's and i feel the current playing squad isn't goin in the right direction so all players will be given the chance to leave the club for free. Im goin to look to bring in a complete new playing squad one that i feel can win this league. 150 strikers should do the trick....

Wont this cost the club alot of money?

Its something i believe in for the better of the club and the chairman is willing to back my plans.

Many fans feel this is a stepping stone for you while you wait for the chance to jump to England?

Yes it is, I stressed to the chairman i dont enjoy scotish football that much, and have always enjoyed the english game more. but i cant walk away from this chance to get promoted.

Any players you have had contact with already with regards to bringing them here?

Yes the Legendary Tommy Mooney!!!!!!!

Ayr in the their first season back in the first division flirted with relegation all season long but did enough to finish above the relegation places mainly due to being able to score goals although they conceded bundles;) Manager Holligan was pleased with Ayr's progress although his record against arch rival and nemesis Dumbarton that first season back was deplorable. The SFL were rumoured to be investigating strong underlying thoughts of Holligan throwing these games to try and keep Dumbarton in the division, as "the manager is a huffy C@nt who will throw in the towel and migrate to England first opportunity ;)" this was to no avail as Dumbarton were even pisher than Ayr and were humped by that cheat Davie in the relegation playoff final!!

So the second season held much promise for an Ayr side who finished the season prior strongly. New addtions were made at the tail end of the campaign as it was common knowledge that that ****in cheat Davie would sign every player known to man come preseason. Anyhow the start of the season was worse that the previous season and Ayr sit rooted to the bottom of the First Division. Holligan however sees Ayr as "a long term project work in progress" and luckily for him his chairman has been baffled by the mans obvious charisma, personality and general ******** as the Ayr manager remains one of only 3 human managers secure in the game. Can he do no wrong.....:p

Deliverance for Guthrie?

In a decision that will no doubt shock many, disgraced manager Joseph Guthrie has been given a shot to turn his horrible luck in football management around. If it’s deliverance and vindication he is looking for, he will have to save troubled Forest Green Rovers F.C. from the brink of collapse and relegation, a feat he has been unable to replicate at his last two clubs: East Fife and Corby Town.

Many fans are sceptical of the move to usher in Guthrie as the new manager of Forest Green, some fearing that this may very well prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the club. Guthrie, however, is not looking at this new opportunity to deliver his own personal stats from the very bowels of statistical hell, but rather an opportunity to deliver on the task set forth, save Forest Green from the jaws of relegation and help bring back financial stability to a club that currently has none. ’I could view this whole appointment as a chance to redeem myself but that would be the wrong approach, I think. There is already a monumental task to complete here at the New Lawn and I, for one, would rather remain focused on achieving said task than pushing to see my name in lights.’

Club chairman Dale Vince believes wholeheartedly that Guthrie will be embraced by the fans and that Guthrie had more than enough about him to lead Forest Green out of the administrative wilderness: ’He’s certainly got an interesting CV, hasn’t he? We were well aware of Mr. Guthrie’s failure to meet board expectations at his last two clubs, but we feel that he possesses the skill-set that matches for what we’re looking for in a manager. Tactically, his mindset is right up our street, as evidenced by his first two wins; he’s quite an ambitious character and we certainly need that among our ranks here; he can mastermind the odd “big win” every now and again. He’s a competent manager that has had some horrible luck recently. This club doesn’t have much at the moment, but we have enough about ourselves for him to do his job comfortably and stave off the threat of relegation. The fans, after a while, will love him. I’m sure of it.’

It will certainly be a tall order for Guthrie and the Forest Green faithful will watch on anxiously to see if their club will swim... or sink.

Sacked... After almost 2 season's at Peterhead and lack of ambition shown by the Board it was time to apply for a new club, I had known for sometime that there had been some unrest over my management style. Rumour was that the board wanted current Queens Park manager Davie Orrto replace me after the success he has had with the Scottish amateur side with back to back promotions, Even though his transfer dealings were a bit crazy.

So i found myself on the dole, signing on for Job seekers allowance, £90 a week i was getting, and even that was paid every 2 weeks. I bumped into Fergus and Joe at the job centre. Fergus was taking a look at Eastleigh and Staines. Joe was looking hiding at the far end, smiling over a advert for a male escort agency. I took the Fergus route, Looked for a English job, it was too f**cking cold up here and the snow was beginning to **** me off.

Fergus was offered both jobs, and he took Eastleigh. and shortly after i was approached by the board at Staines.

The team was good. but a club in Debt. so i looked for towards the free market and have managed to build a Squad that could push for promotion to the BSP.

Sitting in a play-off spot at the end of January, Just 6 points of Fergus and a FA trophy tie against Rob knott to come.

Lets just keep taking one game at a time!

10 games in and Eastleigh were performing well, justifying their pre-season prediction of being in or around the top four. Martin reflected on how that prediction could have been possible with the players that he inherited. In the first two months no fewer that 12 players were released, by the end of January this number would increase to 21, with a further 21 released by the end of Feb, a grand total of 42 players in all. 20 players were brought in, completely changing the squad entirely, tho some of these would be let go over the season.

Of the players that came in, the starting 11 would settle down to be

GK - Aaron McCarey

RB - Paul Nugent

LB - Gregor Robertson

CB - Bobby Donnely

CB - Mat Mitchell-King

DM - Buba Yohann

CM - David Perkins

CM - Calum mcNish (on loan from Southhapmton)

AMR - Paul Costello

AML - Darren Forbes

StR - Steven McConalogue

With the aquisition of Daniel Owusu, a man Martin had tracked from his Dumbarton days and Carl Rodgers, the team effectively boiled down to these 13 players with a few others filling in now and then before being released as next to useless. Despite this massive upheaval in the squad, Eastleigh continued to mount a challenge at the top, and with a 17 match unbeaten run at the end of the season, Eastleigh found themselves having to win their last match against Forrest Green and hoping that Welling would lose theirs to avoid the play-offs and gain Quickly going 3-0 up agaisnt Forrest green, the radios blared out the news that Welling were losing, however joy was turned to despair when the final results came in, Welling had won, and so took the automatic spot, Eastliegh had to face the playoffs

A reasonably comfortable semi-final saw Eastleigh play the final at home against Staines, a fairly even game wich was turned on its head by a 5 minute spell in which Staines scored twice, cancelling out Eastligh's earlier opener, some sloppy defending from stand-in RB Grandison contributing greatly. Congratulations were afforded Staines in due course, whilst Eastleigh would have to lick their wounds and try again.

All in all, not a bad season, considering the squad upheaval, but it wouldn't be Eastleigh if their wasn't a downside, that downside being an ever increasing debt, which will undoubtedly see the club in receivership and deducted points at the start of the new season. where to from there, who knows?

With no plans to switch from amateur to semi-pro being in the Scottish 1st was a huge task, with rival clubs above and below offering wonga to my current stars.

It was merely a season off grabbing as many free transfers as we could with the hope if any left we would gain a few quid (which we did)

about £165k was brought in with Yado Mambo making up about £110k of it.

as expected we struggled with our 1st win coming mid-sept with a 1-0 over the Pars

[video=youtube;abaLVkpF5jU]

in all honestly we struggled to get out of the bottom two all season, mostly sitting 10th but with 2 games to go we managed to get 8th and the dream was on after a stunning 3-0 win over our rivals Partick ths, sadly two defeats in our final two game saw us fall back to 9th where we found ourselves in the play offs to try and stay in the league

a 3-0 trashing by Holligans Ayr utd and a 2-1 defeat by 2nd place Raith in the final league game, even thou at one point we held the lead 1-0 up until the 66th min and where sitting 8th once again.

1st up in the semi's we had Brechin City but we proved to be too strong for them over two legs (3-2) even if we did lose the 1st leg 2-1.

Next up in the final was Berwick Rangers a team we had stopped last season from going up in our quest to go up ourselves.

we took a 1-0 lead in the 1st leg thanks to a Tim Gilissen strike on the 59th min in a game we controlled from start to finish.

the news was breaking that Dundee had offered myself a job, although Dundee where already down after finishing 10th I was left with a choice take it and let Queen's Park face Berwick in the 2nd leg without me or stand and fight......I delayed the offer for a week but in my mind I was going regardless of the outcome of the 2nd leg play off final, this in all honestly was the downfall of Queen's Park as I wasn't fully 100% committed to the Queen's fight for survival.

[video=youtube;QUvZ8dOauso]

(the upload won't do extra time)

We took the lead in the 2nd leg putting ourselves 2-0 on agg but a spirited Berwick fought back to win the 2nd leg 2-1 and level the tie 2-2, in extra time our heads fell and Berwick ran out 4-1 winners (4-2 on agg) this was my final game with the spiders as straight after the match I moved to Dens park....

De-throned Orr...one step closer to the Promise Land...

What a sensational season, it took until the last two games before things were decided and it was all our own fault, we could have won the league but slipped up at the ultimate stage and had to face the dreaded play off once again, where we to suffer the play off curse?

It wasnt easy to find talented players who´d be willing to come but this season we really got it together and the lads played some cracking football, our only real weakness at times was just finding the back of the net but despite that goal getters did what they could and even 38 year old Sibon got on the score sheet at least 15 times. But we can still keep out head held high as our defensive record was the best in the league and we lost the least amount of games, the scoring problem is one we need to rectify without doubt and it would have probably seen us win the league easily if we had.

However, we went into the play offs and after seeing off Cowdenbeath it was time to face once more Davie Orr´s Queens Park, having pipped them to the 3rd Division title, they ended up beating us last year in the play offs and getting their own back, this time though things went in or favour though, despite having lost the first leg we returned with a bang in the second and it was all down to Saric for making the differences, the youngster scored a hattrick in the return leg which saw us sensationally promoted, an unexpected and unbelievable achievement for Berwick and one the fans certainly wont be forgetting for years to come!

The Players

There have been some exceptional performers in every position this season, in goal Louis did another fantastic job now in his first proper full season, definately an improvement on Street. In defence Gaughan has been a rock along with Cowand and Sansara providing plenty of cover from full back. Sibon did exactly what he was asked to do, which was to teach the youngsters and chip in with a few goals, of course none of that wasnt possible without help from Toure and Saric who where blistering down the wings, support from Sissons in midfield was also key but the main main of the season was definately the Kookie Monster Kuklis, the Polish center mid did remarkle, assisted and scored goals and put in amazing performances every week, without him we certainly would not have achieved what we did this season!

Whats Next?

Well there are going to be a lot of changes for next year in staff, need to bring in a lot more of them to help us run the club but of course on the playing side of things we also need to make some changes and hopefully we can bring in one or two strikers who can score as we definately need it!

Basically, seeing as we are going to end up bottom of the league, its a case of building the clubs stature next season, getting players in for the coming seasons and just continuing the build process.

So stay tuned to see who´s coming and who´s going!

Dead Cert...

Well the new season is upon us and we have been given the kind media prediction of being favourites for relegation, so we dont even need to put our hopes up! Everything we get in this league in terms of points is going to be a bonus, obviously avoiding relegation is a big ask but it would be a dream come true if we could manage the absolute impossible!

But we need to make the most of our division status and seek the ambition of taking the club stature higher than ever before, so I have spoken with the board and received some quite positive feedback which I didnt expect I have to say!

We aimed to get a new Parent Club after Hearts cancelled our deal, however they were unable to find a new club so its something we will need to try again. But on that disappointing news, the great news is that we can get in another couple of physions if we can find some good ones but also our Scouting Network received a massive boost as we are now able to scout the whole of Europe aswell as get upto 10 scouts in, which is exactly what we have done to take advantage of this and sent out everything we possibly could!

Transfers

We been busy on the Transfer Market front too, we´ve needed a lot of new players cos basically the quality we have are no where near good enough for the level of football we are going to be up against and re-enforcements are without a doubt required. But aswell as that some old familiar faces will be leaving as I dont see them as good enough or just havnt performed upto the standard that was expected.

The players who have left are defenders were, Shane Duff, Zesh Rehmann, Steve Notman, Justin Thompson, Carlos, Victor Salas, Javier Dopico, Lee Kang Ho. Aswell as these lads we also had some players leave who I had signed back in our hayday of winning the Third Division, Alejandro Caiaffa leaves back to his homeland after 43 appearances, Adam Street joins Macclesfield after 40 appearances, due to high wages and poor performances we had to let Luke Boden leave, he made 47 appearances, last but not least, Golden Boot winner of the Third Division Gifton Noel-Williams goes to Crawley having represented us 78 times scoring 43 goals, a great efford from Gifton and hopefully he will continue his scoring form for his future club.

Coming was a mixture of youth and experience all of course on free transfers as we cannot afford anything else but we have been given a bigger wage budget to play with and that has enabled us to get a better quality of players in. We got another backup keeper in Benjamin Siegrist, the swiss keeper looks pretty good.

Damian Curran and Nigel Hasselbaink join us from Queens Park, both experienced Division One football last season aswell as former Dumbarton player Sedivec. Jim Goodwin from Southend also joined to add more experience to the midfield. Especially as we need a really good Defensive Midfielder.

These will certainly not be the last players to join as there is still plenty needed, I will be looking to bring in young players though as they wont need to be registered and can be bought in after the registration date has expired.

So our aims are set, dont get thrashed and totally humilated by everyone in the league and hopefully get at least a few points on the board!

Stay tuned to see how we get on!

Tours of the Trophy Room Now being Given

Martin’s first season in charge of Eastleigh was deemed relatively successful by most associated with the club, however as summer approached the financial situation at the club began to bite, plummeting to a massive 700k in debt at one point. The prospect of administration and a 10 point deduction loomed over the club for much of the pre-season, however, the chairman somehow managed to find 825k to pay off the debt, however, there was to be no transfer budget, and a tightening of the wage budget.

There were no arrivals at the club over the summer, and some of the previous terms squad players were let go, this however left Martin with a depleted squad, forcing a complete tactical change for the second season. Down to a squad of just 15 players to begin the season, Eastleigh dug deep and started off like a steam train. As things improved financially off the pitch, Martin was able to add one or two new signings, including the 6ft 6inch Daryl Black and an experienced striker in Roy Patterson. Along with Costello, now playing in his favoured role up front, Eastleigh would fire themselves to the top of the table very early and stay there for much of the season, with Dartford and Chelmsford providing the only real challenge over the long haul.

As the season wound down, Eastleigh continued to be in the box seat, and continued to make progress in the FAT. This however would prove to be a double edged sword as injuries and tired legs meant that the final third of the season was played with a squad which was pretty much dead on its feet. However, with 5 games to go, Eastleigh were 7 pts clear, and with 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed Dartford, Chelmsford and Forest Green to be played, the wheels began to come off. Next up for Eastleigh would be a home match against a very strong Dover and an away tie at Gloucester, all before the FAT trophy final. Going into the last game against Gloucester, Eastleigh were 1 pt clear of Forest Green, who were at home in their final game. A draw was not good enough, and only a win would do, which was what the Spitfires achieved, 3pts and the title was theirs! Eastleigh had done it, they were up!

With all credit to Mr Guthrie’s assistant over at Forest Green, they had forced themselves into a challenging position, however the mystery of why they were unable to win their last game remains, some blame the manager’s over confidence, others a row between him and his assman over team selection, Martin when asked would only reply that at the end of the day, they were not good enough!

And the FAT final, well a sunny and financially rewarding day trip to Wembley saw 34000 fans watch Eastleigh triumph. Double winners!

Progression was the order of the day for the Honest Men after finishing just above the relegation places in season 2011/12. Ayr being a low repped side in the SD1 would always struggle to attract players similar to the calibre of those going to likes of that manky mob Dundee or Killie etc. But players did come and at the beginning of season 2012/13. Ayr set out with on paper a stronger squad. All optimism was soon dashed as i had not counted on the squad taking a while to Gel. And again i was rooted to the foot of the table after crashing to defeat after defeat. However like Fergs dumbarton had the gypsy sign over me the previous season, this season my domination over Davie's Queen's Park would kick start my season. As the team started to Gel and a couple of reluctant free signings had a change of heart Sunu etc Ayr went on an unbelievable run which ended the season in an 14 game unbeaten run and leaving the manager thinking what could have been if that terrible start could have been avoided. So Ayr finished on 52 points and a Credible 5th spot, Davies Queen's Park had been found out, but before relegation had been confirmed for them he had already jumped ship to sleeping giants Dundee ;).

So season 2013/14 started and that word Progression reared its ugly head. We had punched above our weight the previous season, we were confident this season , we had kept the backbone of a strong squad so the manager when under the influence made the bold statement that he would go and win the league :p. Realisticly however we had two main goals. The first to beat our points tally of last season, and two to beat that glamourous gay lord Goldy. So off we went and again Ayr stuttered again to a meidiocre start but we soon motored on and were top half for most of the season. We finished on 61 points which was a tremendous points tally. Looking at our games we had lost to title challengers Dunfermline 4 times and shipped 20goals, if we had taken anything from these games we would have been challenging. Gold's wee Ranjers were the nearest rivals and had an unbelievable first season in SD1 finishing in 4th behind me in 3rd. His new coaching tech utilising outside advisors Cleon, Dominator, Rotherham have obviously placed Berwick in a false position. Although i cant complain , i played a left back in goals in our last game to help his charge and i quite rightly so shipped 4 goals to him ;) So Ayr continue to improve, will season 2014/15 be the one or will that w@nk Jonny surpise everyone with his poofy East Stirlingshire team, Will the berwick Manager continue to fly under the radar and do "mo johnstons" on every funt or will Davie just steamroll everyone, makes for a good season........

After losing out in the play offs with Queen's Park and at the same time arranging to jump ship to Dundee, the pressure was on myself to prove that I hadn't made a huge mistake.

After a quick good-bye and 80mile odd drive north-east(ish) I arrived in sunny Dundee.

my 1st task was to rebuild the team that had finished 10th in the 1st, with a kitty of 80k and wage budget of around 25k I knew I had one hell of advantage on my new rivals in the 2nd.

So by acting fast I managed to bring in the following:

After a losing the 1st game of the season 2-1 to Brechin City I could of hung myself. This proved to be a little blimp in our season our only other real lost was against Airdrie, we did lose our final two games on the season but in all honestly the league was wrapped up long before those games. We did manage to reach the QF of the Scottish cup only to lose 2-1 to Motherwell.

[video=youtube;nJ2SAtoKlSY]

some other highlights of the season included the 5-0 thrashing of Stirling

[video=youtube;hZ1N5MPFroE]

and of course the title winning match against Clyde

[video=youtube;tCik2XbAOAw]

All was going well until it was time to resign players the huge wages where taking its toll on the club we had slumped into 500k of debt, in the end key players were allowed to leave in order to cut the wages and try and stem the rising debt. Now back in Scottish 1st we face a massive task of keeping the club up as the rising debt no doubt will have the final say on the club, could this be the 3rd time in 10 years that Dundee go into administration only time will tell.....

Top Half Suprise

We prepared for doom and gloom this season as favourites to go down and get a good ole kicking from everyone. However with a few more signings, especially players that were U21 so they could play without being registered did the world of difference to our club.

At the tail end of last season we bought in Swatiak, another Polish international who showed in the couple of games he played that he could be a sensational coup for the club but time will tell if he can do the biz in this league.

The other signings included Plaza, a U21 Polish Center back along with Schreurs a youthful Dutch midfielder and two strikers in another Dutchman being van Hoogdalem and Frenchman Monirier, both strikers with blistering pace should hopefully be upsetting a few defences in the upcoming season if we just blast the ball up top!

Well things got underway with the opening game against Queen of the South.......and as the scoreline of 4-0 suggest, it could have been even more.......for Berwick!! It was a fantastic opening day for us as the goals flew by and it was an absolute dreamstart, things even continued well and the plan for the season to get a good start were working a treat but then we had the mid-season blip which saw us move once again closer to the relegation zone but thankfully we managed to evade it and with a few small changes we managed to raise our game once more towards the tail end of the season, thankfully we had already managed to avoid relegation but the last 3 games of the season were against the top 3 in the league, expecting nothing from any of them we managed to walk away with 7 points, but it was the victory at Ayr which was the most to write home about, expecting pretty much a kicking from the highest order, especially with Ayr being hot on form, it ended up a nightmare for Dog´s side as new signing Lee Novak ran riot all over his defence! Although Ayr had their chances they just couldnt finish and so at the other end we showed them how to do it! Despite an Ayr side containing signings like Jamie O´Hara, they could not stop getting a 4-1 kicking, a result that pretty much made our season and meant we finished 4th overall, which was something we never ever expected!

We managed to bring in a couple of signings like Lee Novak at the tail end of the season and they certainly upped the performances of the team which was great to see and is something hopefully we can take into next season!

So a great overachieving season and one we need to build on, of course fighting relegation will once again be the aim but if we can finish 4th again then I will certainly be happy!

Close But No Cigar

A 6th place finish in their first year back in the Scottish Second divison for East Stirlingshire was good. But it was so nearly so much better. For much of the season it looked like Kaufman's men could sneak in to the play offs, however a poor run in the middle part of the season saw any dream of that quickly disappear.

It wasn't a bad season by any means, a 2-1 and 1-0 victories over play off winners Bewick, showed the strength of the East Stirlingshire team. 4-1 victories over Dumbarton and Livingston were again a show of strength, however other fixtures against these teams proved to be disappointing.

Once again it was that man Alan Murphy who finished top scorer, only 15 goals this season though, not as prolific as the previous season, more players would join him at the end of season, one important signing was centre back Matis Doumbe, who in just 4 games showed his quality, and he may prove to be important next season.

Onwards and upwards for the East Stirlingshire, who knows maybe they could be playing Divison 1 football in 2 years......yeah thats likely.....

Oh My God

No sane East Stirlingshire fan could have dreamt this past season. An amazing season saw many players come and go for the men from East Stirlingshire, including club hero from the last few season Alan Murphy, who after not getting many games for the first half of the season was allowed to leave on a free much to the anger of the fans. And the top scorer was a defender, Doumbe. Many strikers were used throughout the season, finally settling on Spaniard, Oscar Vega, and Berwick target, Troy Deeney.

The Spanish revolution was underway at East Stirlingshire, Oscar Vega, Lander Galinbando and Oscar Perez were influential in the East Stirlingshire team, and the best signing of the season was possible record transfer Gavin Gunning from Queen's Park.

Although Dundee ran away with the league, as was expected with their 100k wage budget (may be exagerating), East Stirlinsghire were always comfatabley in the play offs...untill the last 10 games, when a 4 game losing streak saw East Stirlingshire slip out of the play offs after having a 10 point gap, a weekend off saw Taunton Football Club travel to East Stirlingshire for a training match (/confident match for East Stirlingshire) and a 4-0 victory for East Stirlingshire saw morale sky rocket, and 2 wins from 2 at the end of the season saw East Stirlingshire rocket in to the play off spot and a fixture against Airdrie.

A 3-1 home victory proved to be the difference, as in the second leg at Airdrie saw an exciting game that saw East Stirlingshire take a 2 goal lead in the opening 20 minutes, however an Airdrie fight back saw them score two goals either side of half time and give themselves hope. However East Stirlingshire held out and would face Brechin in the two legged final.

Despite dominating the away leg, and having about 20 shots to Brechin's 1, Brechin won the first leg 1-0, and East Stirlingshire had it all to do at their (read Steinhousemuhir's) place. After a tense first half it was still 0-0, however during the second half Kaufman recived a phone call, from a man who knew Scottish football from it's beginging (he was there after all) and long time rival, Fergus Martin, he had been watching the game from his home in Eastliegh and advised Kaufman on his tactics, Martin had said Kaufman's men had been taking too many shots from long range and told him to tell his players to work it in to the box, Kaufman was stubborn and hung up on him, however after another 30 yard no hoper was sent over by Vega, Kaufman sent out the message to work it in to the box, 5 minutes later Troy Deeney smashed home a rocket from the corner of the area in to the top corner 1-1 on aggergate, minutes later Oscar Perez ran through the Brechin defence and smashed it in to the near post, game set match East Stirlingshire. At the end of the game the BBC Scotland commentator got a bit over excited, with him being one of very few East Stirlingshire fans, and exclaimed that East Stirlingshire had 'WON THE SECOND DIVISON.' They had infact just won the play offs and were up to the first divison along with Dundee.

Here is to a whole season of losing every single game, in the First effing Divison, for East Stirlingshire.

Promoted at the 1st attempt, we wasn't up to winning the league, the team was thin and getting tired towards the end of the season so we had to settle for a play-off place. 3rd place wasn't bad considering Rob Knotts 'Welling United' had romped the league and 2 points ahead of Eastleigh, Managed by Fergus Martin.

Chelmsford were easily pushed aside in the semi-final, a 3-1 win away from home in the 1st leg set it up for a easy 2nd leg at home. The FA Trophy Final was squeezed between the 2 legs, After a tough and very physical game it ended stalemate at 2-2 against Hayes and Yeading at Wembley, unfortunately we lost on pens. This was quickly followed by a 2-1 win in the 2nd leg of the play-off final. With Eastleigh winning the other play-off against a weak Dover side.

Strangely the Final was played at the Ground of Eastleigh, our opponents had the home advantage in a game that would see the winner promoted to the Blue Square Premier League. But we came out on top. a 2-1 win was enough to claim Promotion at the 1st attempt, but we all knew that next season would be a relegation dog fight.

The BSP campaign started off with some good wins and found ourselves sitting in the top 5 early October, but it was al downhill from there, and all though we was predicted to be relegated at the start of the season the board and the fans were extremely happy with a 14th place finish. Manager Neil Davis was offered a new contract as there was rumours that the manager was unhappy at Staines and was looking to move to a bigger club.

Then came the news the fans were dreading, Manager Neil Davis had sent a formal application for the current manager vacancy over at MK Dons. The Staines board were furious but were helpless to stop the talented English manager's decision to move. MK Dons was a much bigger club that were recently relegated out of the football league and would have the money to tempt Davis away.

So after spells with Peterhead and Staines, Neil Davis was confirmed as the new MK Dons Manager. It wont be easy as the fans and board are expecting to jump straight back up to League 2 at the 1st attempt.

Lead us to Safety!

Thats the aim for the upcoming season! After over archieving last season its key that we maintain the status of the club and remain in this leage otherwise all the hardwork from our debut season in Division 1 is for nothing.

Its certainly not going to be easy with Hamilton coming down from the SPL, Ayr strengthening in numbers to an already star studded line up and then also having Jonnys East Stirlingshire and Davie´s Dundee side coming in also with all of them having bigger budgets than ourselves. Of course it doesnt help our cause that the board have decided that the wage budget should be slashed by 2.5k, which does not aid us when we already disadvantage to signing players against everyone in the league.

We got no big signings in during pre-season, the squad is the same as last season which of course may not be a bad thing at all but we´re having to settle for getting players later on during the season. But we got in two promising midfielders in Helander from Sweden and Lee Cross who the scouts rate very highly.

But we got rid of some old faces who have served us very well so far but with better and younger players joining we say our goodbyes to Ben Webster and Rob Sissons who both featured in over 100 games for the club. Demba Toure leaves after almost 60 appearances and 13 goals aswell as Nikola Saric who was the hero of the play offs last season against Queens Park.

We have also managed to sell a player for 12k! Szymanek leaves for MK Dons as his performances wernt upto par, over 30 apps and only about 4 goals to show for it is not good enough for what he need in the future.

We will be looking to bring in some more players, mainly youngsters unless we can find a good player who actually wants to join!

Its gonna be a tough season and a media prediction of 8th means we´ve got to avoid relegation, with Alex, Davie and Jonny in the league its gonna be a tough battle with the big spenders!

OMG! They Cannae Believe It!!!!

The unbelievable has happened! No one expected this to happen! What the hell has happened here.................CHAMPIONS!! You heard right, Berwick are the Champions of Division 1 and will be joining the elite in the SPL!

It was a close affair though and it was our superior goal difference that won us the title against none other than Alex´s Ayr side! We enjoyed a great start by beating Ayr 1-0, we even had a great mid-season spell in a run which saw us win 13 out of 14 and drawing the other. However our assistant decided to ruin the good run by then losing 5 games out 6 and this meant our lead got cut and Ayr took over.......with ten games left Ayr were 4pts clear, but they still had Berwick to play in a fixture which ended last time 4-1 to Rangers..........after just 34 minutes Ayr were cruising to victory already by leading 3-1......but then came an amazing second half by Berwick and we won an amazing game 4-3 at Ayr! What a corker of a game!

On the last game of the season a goal difference of 4 seperated the two sides, we had to play Partick and Alex´s Ayr faced Jonny´s East Stirlingshire..........despite an Ayr win, we stuffed Partick 2-0 and took the title in style!! It was never expected, a truly inbelievable season it has been, I was happy with avoiding relegation, this just tops it all!

Berwick - Champions of the Scottish Division 1 - I never thought that would ever happen!

Transfers

Well we only got the two youngsters in during pre-season but we managed to get some more in during the course of the season and also released some lads early to join other clubs and try to make up some more in our wage budget!

It were all youngsters coming in who all seemed to be promising players for the future, or at least according to our coaches that is!

In came strikers Damiono Trotta and Paola Ferrari, Zmyslony a polish defensive midfielder came in with a spanish defensive midfielder named Eusebio. A young Italien left back Crotti came and also featured in the last couple of games for us. We even managed to sign an african kid named Anane for 75k! With the likes of Coventry after him we just had to bid and luckily he came to us, he looks a good prospect and hopefully he will fulfill his promise!

Kermogant left the club aswell as Kapsi, Curran, Jones and Hasselbaink aswell as McCormack on loan to St.Johnston in the SPL, but he might sign on for 6k to them.

Performance

Despite missing plenty of good chances the strikers have been in scoring form with all 3 of them coming in the top 7 of the leading scorers and Lee Novak taking the Golden Boot with 21 goals. Switatek had 13 and Pitman 12. But it was an overall team effort of course which got us the title, Plaza and Almeida had been very strong at the back and at the start of the season we had actually only conceded 5 until the assistant gave us the poor run of form and games.

Its gonna be an impossible task next season but for now, we are gonna celebrate into the night about an unbelievable achievement!

BERWICK - CHAMPIONS!

SPL here we come!

WOW

What a season for East Stirlingshire, their first season in the Scottish First Divison, they were expected to get whooped every game and finish 10th. After only 3 games they were sitting pretty at the top of the league, and from then on there was no threat of relegation.

Coming up with Dundee last season both teams were expected to struggle, Dundee did East Stirlingshire didn't. Amazingly in their first season in the First Divison, Kaufman's men finished a great 4th, only just off relegated SPL team Hamilton. And was it not for the middle period of the season where a run of 8 games without a win that cost them the chance to compete for the title. But Kaufman was definetly happy with the 4th place finish espically seeing as just a few short years ago this team were finishing bottom of the league system.

A great 4th place finish was not the only celebrations for East Stirlingshire, they also had great success in the cup competitions. A quater final in the League Cup saw them go out to Celtic, and that wasn't even the best thing, a trip to Greece was all planned, but the final of the Challenge Cup would intsead take place at Firhill much to the disappointment of all the players, however a 2-0 victory over Morton saw them take home the Challenge Cup and the first cup silverware for Kaufman, who by the way is the first manager from the group of managers who joined at the beginging of the 2010/11 season in Scotland to win a cup in Scotland, and believe it or not they weren't finished there.

Hampden Park called to them and East Stirlingshire got their just in time for the Scottish Cup semi final, Motherwell would be their opponents, a quick start to the game and 7 minutes in East Stirlingshire centre back Villa was sent off for a challenge on the Motherwell striker, it was harsh but he had to walk, 20 minutes gone and another red again for East Stirlingshire, this time left midfielder Sorino was sent off for a tackle from behind, rightfully so. 9 men down they stood no chance, but at half time it was still 0-0, the 9 men from the First Divison were holding the 3rd placed SPL side, however 2 minutes in to the second half and a 25 yard free kick sashed the back of the net for Motherwell and it was all over from there, a 2nd in the 80th minute sealed the win for Motherwell but East Stirlingshire were proud, with only 9 men for 70 minutes of the game they had only conceded 2 to a very good SPL team.

After the last game of the season Kaufman spoke to, read at, the press;

"We've only gone and finished effing 4th in the First Divison, we were in the effing Third Divison 3 seasons ago give me some credit, but no you all focus on Berwick v Ayr for the title, go to hell. We made it to the quaters, semis and won the three cups, what do i get? Nothing thats what. And don't get me started on those English managers, failures, they can go on about doing well in England but lets face it they are awful, they all couldn't hack it in Scotland and lucked in to good jobs, hell you can do well and then take over a great SPL side means eff all you failed and couldn't take a lower league team up so come back to Scotland and take over a Third or Second divsion side then do well with them, then and only then talk to me......oh and yeah we'll say hi Berwick when we pass you on the way to the SPL."
