2052-53 === LEEDS UNITED === ENGLISH PREMIER DIVISION

Board: Win the title.

SEASON SUMMARY

League

OUCH!

Not a campaign I'll be looking back on with any great pleasure. I don't really know what was to blame - perhaps the team is starting to age, creaking at the joints, and entering it's final couple of years. Well, I suppose most of my starting XI have been at Elland Road for 8-10 seasons, a few are just at the end of their prime time, while other players are just about to hit that golden period. But at times in the season, we just didn't turn up, slogging out draws, or being beaten by clubs at the bottom of the division. By the time we put together any kind of positive form, the top 2 were out of sight, and Spurs certainly were. I'm not going to say much more about this league season, it's caused a lot of unrest within the squad. The Board's confidence in me is at an all time low, and our final position is the worst since the 2042/43 season, when we also finished 8th.

As the season winds down, my Assistant Manager, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, announces that he'll be retiring in July after spending 29 years at the club. I arrange a retirment dinner for him, and much fun is had by all - and some of us can't say his second name by the end of the night.

At least Nobby will be happy, as Stoke qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 11 years.

Finished: 8th.

Cups

FA Cup

Soldiered through to the Final, only to lose 1-0 to Arsenal.

League Cup

Back-to-back wins slipped through our fingers when Spurs beat us 2-1 in the Quarter Final.

European Super Cup

Thrashed Genoa 4-1.

Club World Championship

Hosted by Australia this year, we didn't join in the fun until the Semi Final, where we beat Melbourne Victory 3-0. That set up a Final with Argentina's Boca Juniors - 5-1 to us at FT, and another trophy for the cabinet!

European Champions League

This year, we started off proceedings in Group E, and after navigating a group containing Porto, Beitar Jerusalem and Partizan Beograd, we found ourselves up against FC Internazionale in the 1st KO round. We KO'd them 6-4 on agg, and then disposed of St. Mirren in the Quarter Finals 5-3 on agg. Bayern gave us no trouble in the Semi Finals, as we ran out 5-1 winners on agg.

This year the Final was held at Celtic Park, and we came up against Tottenham Hotspur. I was sure they'd take the cup, having only recently won the English Premier Division, and beaten us in both league encounters. What ensued was a shock....for them. We battled out a 0-0 draw, and went into extra time. We took the upper hand on 100 minutes, when our Israeli star Amet Nuriel headed home. However, they levelled things in extra time first half injury time. We managed to grind out 1-1 until the 120th minute, but then a miracle. Peter Green, just turned 18, and having only come on as a sub in 4 games prior to this match, scored his first ever senior goal on 120+1. He wouldn't even have been on the subs bench normally, except that we had 5 first team strikers out injured or suspended going into the match. Green turned himself into a Leeds hero, and I rewarded him with a new contract. Back-to-back Champions League trophy wins, and a job saver for me. After the disappointment of the league, it looks as though we will be playing Champions League football next season :D

SQUAD

Not the best season for them, and harmony has been disrupted. Brought in 4 new players during the course of the season, all for around £40.5M. All have performed well. I was particularly pleased to capture Bogdan Cretu from Calgiari - he's a 20 year old Romanian striker, who we initially signed on loan because of our striker crisis - 4 of my first team strikers were out injured. Took a couple of fames for him to settle, but I'm sure he'll get better as he gets older - and is certainly in with a shout of replacing old hands like Dimitar Bozhanov (now 32, and entering his 15th season at Leeds), and Antonio Carlos, our Brazilian hotshot who's now 31 and getting slower.

Next season, I'm going to have to look at more sensible spending, and invest more in the future of the club as opposed to signing the big stars of today. Although we are getting some fine talent through our youth setup, with 4 of them breaking into the first team this season.

Best Players

Top Scorer: 30 - Fernando

The Spaniard had a great season in front of goal, and impressed me so much that he's now one of the first choice players in my Spain squad - despite what my Ass Man at Spain thinks.

Highest Avg: 7.38 - Amit Nuriel

The 23 y.o. Israeli had a good season. All I can say really, as previous seasons have seen our best rated players hit the 7.5 and 7.6 mark.

Leeds Hero: Peter Green

For his last gasp winner in the Champions League Final. Some of his stats are pretty low just now, so we'll see how he develops next season before deciding on his long term future with the club.

All Transfer Activity.

PLAYER AWARDS

European Champions League Best Player: Juan Jose Mohamed.

Club Word Championship Best Player: Pascal Buess.

Young Player of the Month (January): Jorge Pena.

2052-53 === INTERNATIONAL CAREER === SPAIN

So qualifying for the 2054 World Cup kicked off this season. We're in Group 9 along with Wales, Austria, Norway and Albania. An easy group, you may think, but Austria put up one hell of a fight. Anyway, results so far:

Spain 6-1 Wales

Austria 1-1 Spain

Spain 3-0 Norway

Albania 1-8 Spain

Wales 0-5 Spain

So, another win and we should be over the line, and on the way to the USA next summer.

We went to the USA this summer though - which caught me by surprise because I'd forgotten we'd qualified for the Confederations Cup due to winning EURO 2052. This competition was new territory for me, and one of the few things left for me to win.

CONFEDERATIONS CUP 2053

Hosts: USA.

Holders: Ghana.

Group Stage

We were handed the easier of the 2 groups, finding ourselves in Group A with Egypt, New Zealand and Uzbekistan. Group B comprised of England, USA, Paraguay and Mexico.

Three wins out of three for us in the group saw us into the Semis:

Egypt 1-4 Spain

Uzbekistan 0-4 Spain

Spain 5-0 New Zealand

Semi Final

A tougher challenge, and we had to pull out all the stops to beat a tough Mexico side.

Mexico 1-2 Spain

England 4-2 Egypt

Third Place

Mexico 2-0 Egypt

FINAL

A big showdown against England at The Rose Bowl, Pasedena. The press (as per usual) were banging on about how this was going to be England's year, and that Spain had no chance. The omens were already in our favour, after England had drawn 1-1 with the USA in the group stage (familiar anyone? :D)

They held us for 23 minutes, we broke the deadlock. Things stayed that way until HT. After a nervous start to the second half, we finally went 2 up on 67 minutes - enough for the win, but we added a third on 89. Spain's first Confederation Cup since 2045, and delight all round. (And a Steam achievement unlocked for me).

SPAIN 3-0 England

@ The Rose Bowl, Pasedena.

Att: 100092.

Striker, and ex-Leeds man Mikel Uriarte won Top Goalscorer. Our defensive midfielder Jorge was named Best Player. And our 22 y.o. goalie Jesús Betancor won the award for Best Keeper (and I think I'll be signing him in the summer).

I've decided to have a crack at World Cup 2054 and then call it a day on the International stage - at 80 years of age, I think it'll be about time!

2053/54 === LEEDS UNITED === ENGLISH PREMIER DIVISION

Board: Win the title.

Media: 5th.

SEASON SUMMARY

League

I'd hoped for better things from the team this year, and the season started fairly well, but by matchday 6 the wheels started to come off our season. I don't know if it's just a case of the aging backbone of my team showing, or maybe the mix of nationalities causing problems on the field. Nothing I said to the players seemed to make any difference, and we gave away sloppy goals too often, and blew 2 goal leads on a number of occasions. Things were never going to improve after our disaster in the League Cup - one player was fined, and 16 of my squad turned on me. We were inconsistent for the rest of the season, and bobbled around between 7th-9th. More fines were handed out towards the end of the season. We had 2 horror shows against Chelsea and Liverpool, both of them beat us 7-1 in our away fixtures. The lads restored some pride by beating Manchester City on the back of our Liverpool disaster, and it took a win against Swindon Town on the last day of the season to confirm our 7th place finish.

We had a nervous wait to see if 7th would be good enough for a Europa League spot. It all depended on cup results, and by a stroke of luck we were awarded a place. Once again, qualification for Europe seems to have saved my bacon - although the overall confidence in me from the board is sitting at 46%.

Finished: 7th (Europe).

tabledk.png

Cups

FA Cup

Beat Wolves and Barnsley to reach the 5th Round, but then went out away to Newcastle, losing 4-2.

League Cup

Beat Bracknell Town in the 3rd Round. Drawn away against League 1 side Cardiff City in the 4th Round, I saw easy passage to the next round. But I hadn't bargained on our Swiss midfielder picking up 2 yellow cards in 2 minutes during the first half. Cardiff used their numerical advantage well, and scored the only goal of the game on 65 minutes. I was fuming at full time, and fined our idiotic midfielder a weeks wages - a move which saw 16 of my players protest about the unfair treatment of their team mate.

European Super Cup

Beat Genoa 3-2 a.e.t.

Club World Championship

Beat Los Angeles Galaxy 5-1 in the Semi Final. Met Sao Paulo in the Final - an easy win I thought, but they grabbed the only goal of the game on 65 minutes. I wasn't happy.

European Champions League

We had a tough group this year, but that was no excuse really. With us in Group C were Espanyol, Sporting CP, and Roma. We lost our first two games against Espanyol and Roma, but then beat Sporting at home and away. We got revenge on Espanyol, but would need a win against Roma in our last match to ensure qualification. Sadly, we blew a 2 goal lead in the last 4 minutes of the match. Roma had 13 points, Espanyol had 12, and we finished with 10 and headed into the Europa League.

Europa League

Drawn against Athletic Club of Spain, we might as well have just given them a bye. The first leg finished 3-2, but should have been 5-2 - our "wonderkid" Bogdan Cretu missed 2 first half penalties. And that proved to be so costly, as Athletic thrashed us 3-0 in the return leg. We were out, 5-3 on agg. Ok, we'd have gone out on away goals if Cretu had netted his spot kicks, but the overall performance was below average.

SQUAD

This year, we start to see the departure of players who have been great servants to the club over the last 10-15 seasons. Leaving us this year is Marino Alberti, our Italian DL who has been with us since joining from Udinese in 2040. He made 261 appearances for the club, and scored 8 goals throughout his career. He has retired as a player, and is now starting a career as a coach.

The time has come to start seriously thinking about the future of the team at Leeds. The last couple of seasons have shown that we're just not up for the challenge, and the Golden Era has come to an end. I'd like to rebuild as much as possible, but the club is in debt, and I'm not sure that there will be much transfer money available next season. Defence certainly needs to be addressed, our current keeper is 34 now, and we'll probably lose a couple of top players from the DC area in the next 2 seasons.

This season, I splashed the cash a bit, spending £66M on transfers. Although I think I'll have to review my spending policy in light of a couple of errors of judgement which have cost the club money.

The youth setup continues to produce some talented players, some have now found themselves on the fringes of the first team.

Best Players

Top Scorer: 18 - Bogdan Cretu

Quite a low tally, but he's only 21, and should hopefully improve with time. Won the English Players' Young Player of the Year award.

Highest Avg Rating: 7.13 - Léo

Labelled as a Brazilian "wonderkid". Signed him from Atletico Mineiro for £17.75M. Had to fine him this season though, as he rated a 3.7 in our 7-1 thrashing by Chelsea. At £45,500 p/w I expect more, even if he is only 19. Voted Fans' Player of the Year.

All Transfer Activity.

CLUB NEWS

My long serving Assistant Manager, Sokratis Papastathopoulos retires from football after almost 30 years at the club. I offer Aurelio Santos, one of our longest serving coaches, the AssMan position and he signs a 3 year deal.

The Board announces that plans to expand our training facilities have been cancelled, due to lack of funds. The club is currently about £10M in the red.

2053/54 === INTERNATIONAL CAREER === SPAIN

Well, we qualified for the World Cup in the USA, but our last 3 qualifying games weren't exactly inspiring:

Spain 2-0 Austria

Spain 2-2 Albania

Norway 1-1 Spain

Anyway it was enough.

WORLD CUP 2054

Hosts: USA.

Holders: England.

Group Stage

We had been drawn in Group H, along with Nigeria, Denmark, and Australia. Things went smoothly, beating Nigeria 5-0, Australia 4-1, and Denmark 1-0. 3 wins out of 3.

Group A

Qualified: England, Colombia.

Out: Cameroon, Switzerland.

Group B

Qualified: Scotland, Saudi Arabia.

Out: Russia, Egypt.

Group C

Qualified: Italy, USA.

Out: Chile, Japan.

Group D

Qualified: Turkey, Uruguay.

Out: Bosnia & Herz., Mexico.

Group E

Qualified: Brazil, Belgium.

Out: Guatemala, China.

Group F

Qualified: Slovakia, Argentina.

Out: Ivory Coast, Honduras.

Group G

Qualified: Ukraine, Hungary.

Out: Ghana, South Korea.

Group H

Qualified: SPAIN, Nigeria.

Out: Australia, Denmark.

Second Round

We were given a relatively easy tie against Hungary. We laboured a bit in the first half, and went in at 1-1, but 2 second half goals saw us through.

Hungary 1-3 SPAIN.

Saudi Arabia 0-2 England.

Colombia p1-1 Scotland.

Uruguay 1-3 Italy.

USA 0-1 Turkey.

Argentina 1-2 Brazil.

Slovakia e2-1 Belgium.

Ukraine 2-0 Nigeria.

Quarter Final

A much, much tougher game agaisnt Brazil. The pundits had written us off prior to the match, but we turned in a top notch performance. We took the lead on 12 minutes, and things stayed that way until Brazil levelled things on 86 minutes. However, we got the goal we needed on 101 minutes, and held on to win 2-1.

Brazil 1-2e SPAIN.

England 0-0p Turkey.

Colombia 0-1 Italy.

Slovakia 1-0 Ukraine.

Semi Final

Seems this was our year to face the big guns in the competition, as we were drawn against Italy for the Semi Final. Italy were pre-match favourites, and scored in first half injury time. We levelled the score with a goal on 56 minutes, and that's how it ended after 90 minutes. But in the first half of Extra Time we seemed like a different team, and ex-Leeds man Juan José Mohamed bagged a hat-trick (96, 99, 105 mins) to put us 4-1 up. That's how it ended, and Spain were in the World Cup Final.

Italy 1-4e SPAIN

Turkey 2-1 Slovakia.

Third Place

Slovakia 1-2e Italy.

THE FINAL

Turkey 0-4 SPAIN

Held at The Rose Bowl, Pasadena in front of a crowd of 100092. The memories of our Confederations Cup win here last year must have come flooding back. We went in leading 1-0 at half time. In the second half, Turkey collapsed after having a man sent off on 71 minutes. We scored 3 more: a brace from DR Raúl (72,86) - his first ever goals for Spain - and a fine header from DC Paulino (who says you need strikers?!). Spain win 4-0, and lift their 3rd World Cup, and the 2nd won under my management.

Our striker Peter Festus won the Golden Boot (and unlocked a Steam achievement for me). Jesus Betancour won Best GK, and 8 of my players were named in the World Cup Dream Team.

So my record with Spain now stands at: 2 World Cups, 1 European Football Championship, and 1 Confederations Cup. I might just retire from the International game...

Bracknell!

Can't help noticing how much you've struggled in the last 2 seasons. Is the moment almost upon us?

Not just yet. I'm the Arsene Wenger of the future :)

Shame about Bracknell.

And you're sliding a bit.

How did Stoke do in the Champions League?

Stoke did quite well in the Champions League. They came 1st in Group A (Ajax, FC Internazionale, and Basel in with them). They scraped through 5-4 on agg against Besiktas in the 1st KO round, beat Leverkeusen 3-1 agg in the Quarter Final, but came undone against Arsenal in the Semi Final - losing 4-0 on agg.

Liverpool won the league :)

Another average year for you though, at least you finished a place higher in the league this season.

That league win brings their total Premier Division wins to 22, which equals the record set by Arsenal. Man United only have 20 :)

Board: Continental qualification.

Media: 6th.

SEASON SUMMARY

League

Winning our first 3 league games was an indication of what was to come this season, and it was a much better campaign than we'd had during the last 2 seasons. We climbed steadily up the table, although with Europa League games causing league games to be rescheduled it was sometimes frustrating not to keep pushing on. Improvements had been made to my team during the summer, and I was going more for ability rather than big money when it came to spending. We still had the odd slip-up here and there, but nowhere near as many as during our last 2 years, and only 5 defeats all year.

Rearranged matches meant that we were approaching the end of the season sitting in 2nd place, just 5 points behind Spurs, but with 5 games in hand. An easy run in, except that we had to play 5 matches in 11 days - and 2 days after that we'd have a European Final to play. My players rallied well, and we could have snatched the title with a win at Spurs in our 3rd last game of the season, but we lost 1-0, and had to struggle to beat Arsenal 3-2 a couple of nights later. Still, it meant we clinched the title at Elland Road. Our last game of the season was a dead rubber against Stoke, and I gave some of my departing veterans one final run out in front of a home crowd.

I'm named English Premier Division Manager of the Year. Leeds United are back!

Finished: 1st (Champions)

tableof.png

Cups

FA Cup

Beat Coventry (5-0), Oxford United (2-0), Manchester United (2-0), Fulham (3-1), and Everton (3-1) to reach the Final. We didn't get to play the FA Cup Final until 2nd June - it was rearranged due to our games backlog, and the League 2 Playoff final. Anyway, we were up against Manchester City. I'd expected a battle, but they had 6 players away on international duty and that probably explains why we ran out 5-0 winners. Our first FA Cup since 2049 :)

League Cup

Beat Everton (3-1), Doncaster (5-1) and Manchester United (4-0) to reach the Semi Final, but crashed out 2-1 on agg to Chelsea.

Europa League

Joined in the fun at the 3rd Qual. Rnd and beat Haka of Finland 8-0 on agg. Next up was French side Genets Anglet, who we beat 5-1 on agg to reach the Group stage.

Group Stage, we were drawn in Group E alongside GFCO Ajaccio (H5-0, A4-0), Roma (A2-0, H5-1) and Metalist Kharkiv (H6-0, A 2-1). None of them put up a fight, and we got 6 wins out of 6.

Onto the KO rounds, and first we drew AZ Alkmaar - no contest as they went out 7-3 on agg. Belgians Club Brugge were next for a hammering, and hammer them we did, winning 5-1 at theirs, and 9-0 at ours. 14-1 on agg, and we were into the Quarter Final. The Quarter Final had us up against Werder Bremen, breezed through 6-2 on agg. Panathinaikos gave us a bit of a fight when we went to theirs to defend a 3-0 lead from the Semi Final 1st leg. The pegged us back to 3-2 on agg, but after the hairdryer treatment at half time, my team responded with 3 second half goal and we won 5-2 on agg.

It was an all-English Final this year, although we both had to travel to Sweden for the match. We were up against Stoke City, who had lost in both of our league encounters. Stoke took the lead on 9 minutes, and for a long time it didn't look like we would get a goal at all, but on 40 minutes our Romanian wonderkid Cretu levelled the scores. At half time I was firm but fair with my team talk, and we looked sharper in the second half. We took the lead on 64 minutes with Wenderson netting from a corner, and 15 minutes later Cretu grabbed his second of the game to give us a nice 2 goal cushion. Stoke rallied back in the last 10 minutes, and pulled one back on 90+1. But it wasn't enough, and we won our first Europa League title in 11 years...Sorry Nobby.

FOND FAREWELLS

This season Leeds will be saying farewell to club icons and legends who have reached the end of their careers at the club:

Kevin Vaessen - DEF LC

Club Legend. Kevin has spent almost all of his career at Leeds since signing from AZ Alkmaar for £4.1M in 2039/40. He has made 376 appearances and has scored 38 goals for the club. He has won 27 competition medals throughout his career.

Iranilson - GK

This Brazilian stopper has been with us since 2042/43, signing from Real Madrid for £6.75M. He has made 422 appearances for the club, and built up a record of 31 competition wins throughout his career, which includes 3 Champions League medals.

Ferdinand Sidibé - DEF RC

Club Legend. The Ivorian spent the first chunk of his career in Germany, playing for Bayern Munchen and VfB Stuttgart, before signing for us in 2045/46 for a fee of £12.75M. He has made 280 appearances and scored 71 goals. Sidibé has also won 22 competition medals in his career, including the Champions League, Europa League and Africa Cup of Nations.

SQUAD

Moving onto the rest of the squad, and I think I've got the balance of age and experience right once again. I brought in new faces to replace aging and departing players, but also continued to nurture the talent emerging from our Youth Academy. Once again, I broke a little promise made to myself, and spent the whole of the transfer budget (£50M), but I did so wisely and set a transfer fee cap of £20M per player. I also soon found out that there is talent out there that can be had relatively cheaply.

Players joining us this season:

Murat Can - £15M from Braga.

Murat is only 21, but a top class striker, and a great replacement for our ageing strikers. The Dutchman finished the season with 28 goals this season.

Ivan De Martino - £3.3M from Roma.

Young Italian DM, AMC. Ivan really impressed this season, chipping in with assists and goals. Needed to bolster midfield now that some of my regulars are over 30.

Sascha Hock - £9M from Stoke City.

German goalkeeper who I signed to replace veteran Iranilson. Consistent between the sticks, and kept a number of clean sheets. Found himself as a first team regular from the moment he walked in the door - much to the annoyance of our Madagascan reserve keeper who'd been waiting 3 years to get onto the first team.

Adria Medina - £17.25M from Parma.

Spanish AM/FC. Performed ok this season, but I would have expected more than 14 goals for the pricetag. Will see how he progresses in the next season.

Micha Advocaat - £10M from Napoli.

Dutch DLC. Replacement for fellow countryman Kevin Vaessen, and rumoured to be the great-grandson of one Dick Advocaat. Solid in defense this season. Only 23, so surely will get better with age.

Best Players

Top Scorer: 29 - Adam Akers.

He may not look like much on paper, but he can certainly find the net. Adam is a product of our Youth Academy, and I so very nearly sold him a couple of years ago (glad I listened to my Assistant!). Now worth £6.25M, and at 21 he looks like he has a fantastic career ahead. He won English Players' Young Player of the Year award.

Best Avg Rating: 7.55 - Bogdan Cretu.

Vast improvement on last season, and the young Romanian striker tucked away 27 goals for us. Always knows where to be on the pitch, and is showing us all why he was labelled a wonderkid when we stumbled across him last year. Already has 9 goals in 20 games for his country too.

Season Transfer Activity

CLUB NEWS

In February 2055, a consortium entered a bid to take control of Leeds United. They were successful. News was going around that I was to be replaced as manager by Enzo Pinelli - a former Leeds player, and currently one of our coaches. I thought my aim of managing for 20 seasons at the club was about to be ruined, but the new Chairman decided to let me stay on as manager.

NEW CLUB RECORDS

Most Assists: 36 - Bogdan Cretu.

Most Goals For Club: 203 - Antonio Carlos.

2054/55 === INTERNATIONAL CAREER === SPAIN

Brazil's new manager must have been feeling a bit of bravado when he invited us over to South America for a friendly. But we were on a high, and thrashed them 4-0. Alas, Brazil sacked their manager after only 3 weeks in charge.

Qualification for EURO 2056 got underway, we were drawn in Group C with Malta, Hungary, Greece, and Slovenia. We're making heavy weather of it, even though we're currently top of the pile:

Spain 3-1 Malta

Hungary 1-2 Spain

Spain 3-0 Greece

Slovenia 2-3 Spain

Malta 1-3 Spain

One more victory should see us over the line, and on our way to Holland.
