Tactic help - Clear Cut Chances issue

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on my tactic. I'm actually doing fairly well, currently top of the league and i won the league the previous season.

However i don't think my tactic is working as well as it should. I'm usually slightly dominating matches with 55-60% possession, and around 20-30 shots per match. This is where i have my issue, as i have very few, if any clear cut chances. Take this recent match for example:

This is another match from this season:

This is how i've done so far this season:

Do you guys have any help on where i'm going wrong. Or should i just be happy that i'm doing well anyway?

I'm not an expert (yet, lol), but as I've mastered the same formation with a help from the community, I might suggest the following:

-Switch one of your CMs to attacking role, so he had a better(closer) position to the box before making a through pass

-Not to have both players on the same wing on the attacking role. Perhaps playing wing-back as a supporter and winger as attacker, if the striker plays with speed, and vice-versa if striker is a big guy

-Either assigning F9 role to your striker, to make him more involved in the team play and make him an in-box assistant, or giving him AF or CF(a) role and arranging other attacking player to feed him.

-Adopting "pass into space" TI

To be honest, I don't think you should change much at all. From what I can see you are doing well, although you may indeed lack a little penetration (which is why Paul suggested the CM(A). CCC's are overrated, it's more important to look at where your shots are coming from, and it seems to me that since they are coming from just outside or inside the box, you have no real issues here.

Your team (and number 6 specifically) are taking far too many shots from outside the box. In your first 'shots' screenshot he had 6 from between the 18 yard box and halfway!

Best observation so far. Whilst some may be set pieces, it tells a story. Look to get these players to Shoot Less Often, or use Work Ball Into Box.

As a fellow player of this formation, the big blob of shooting from the penalty spot and beyond looks odd. I have found that my successful shooting chances come from the edge of the 6 yard box towards the flanks as the players are set loose inside the area in space.

This is a shooting map from one of the games which I dominated. Your shooting map looks very one dimensional by comparison. Very much front and center so to speak.

It looks to me that you are struggling to penetrate and shooting due to having nothing else to do.

From the analysis screen you can click on the dot and see the highlight of each shot. I find this invaluable to see the build-up to the chance and you can see the pattern of how you are creating your chances, plus what options were on to pass to that were ignored, or even if there was no option available.

EDIT: I play with similar TI's to you, however I use "pass into space", "exploit flanks" (60% of the time) and "work into box" and don't use "shorter passing". My goals tend to come from inside forwards breaking onto through balls from central positions toward the flanks or my striker bursting onto passes/crosses from the wing backs.

I put this down to the combination of work into box making the players less likely to shoot, and the pass into space encouraging looking for runners.

Adding to this topic I switched to a new save under FM15 with liverpool - playing a 4-3-3 (4-1-2-2W-1) and noticed the exact same issue that the OP experienced. I tried tweaking all manner of settings, personel changes, and other things.

Finally I added the "look for overlap" TI which I had discounted due to other comments on this forum. Suddenly I was getting chances in the box on the angles all along the 6 yard box like before. It seems that this shout is more important in FM15 than in FM14. I am at a loss to explain why this makes this much of a difference to the performance.

A random thought is that the F9 is now looking to the sides for runners into the box, and the two IF's are looking to be those runners perhaps?

I might give that a try - Look for Overlap.

I ended up leaving Athens after winning the league a couple of times, and moved to Lyon. I've kept the same formation but changed both wide players to IF's and the AP to attack and added Work Ball into Box. I feel the team is playing better, however i feel my CF isn't playing great, even though he's scoring goals for me.
