How do assists work?

My striker just scored a hat-trick. My winger had 3 assists. But one of the goals was a penalty. So how on earth did he get an assist for that too? I mean, sure, he was the one they fouled when I was awarded a penalty but I had no idea that would count as an assist too. Does it really work like this? And in real life too? If so, I had no idea.

Are there other weird ways to get an assist for goals other than this?

that is strange alright but i don't see anything wrong with awarding an assist to the player who WON the penalty. he deserves some kind of credit anyway.

Obviously the player that won you the penalty assisted in the striker scoring his hattrick. If he hadn't won the penalty then your striker might not have had his chance to score a hattrick. It's pretty straight forward if you ask me.

He was the last player to touch the ball before the player who scored the goal, and his touches were close to the goal. I also think ti is straightforward.

I didnt realise that your players get assists for own goals until a couple of months ago.

Well thank you. I had no idea it actually was this straightforward. This is simpler than I thought and it makes perfect sense.

I just thought it was a bug.
