Amaroq Posted May 4, 2009 Share Posted May 4, 2009 That's actually a very good question, esp. for lower-league managers. Here's what I've found, in addition to the good advice above: Cutting Costs - "Send to Specialist" increases your "Other" costs. I usually do it for my core players and most promising youth, but fringe players, middling youth, etc, I now "Leave to Physio". - Scouting increases your "Other" costs, especially out of country. I've started to become a lot more judicious about my scouting, often leaving my scouts idle/unassigned, going into scouting overdrive around the transfer windows and going back to unassigned when I can't reasonably make any transfers. - Per-appearance bonuses can really add up. I try to use them sparingly, whittling them below the players asking price, etc. Even so, more than 5% of my expenditure last season came in bonuses. - Make the maximum use of your loans-in, ideally offering no fee and 0% wages. Not every club or player will accept, but if you can get two starters and two quality substitutes in on long-term loan for free, that's four real salaries you don't have to pay. Increasing Revenue - Home friendly matches are a big help. I schedule my own friendlies, and try to do a balance of "big" sides who can fill my little stadium, trailing towards some confidence-building wins over little sides as the pre-season draws to a close. - Cup runs can be a massive help, both for the extra home matches and the prize monies. Resting key players in the run-up to a key Cup tie can help; so can a higher Cup squad bonus. Players who "revel in the big matches" will tend to do their best in Cup matches. - Take your Fan Days seriously; make sure to come out in an attacking formation and try to make the match entertaining for the fans .. it helps build long-term ticket revenues. I suspect the "For The Fans" team-talk is slightly more effective on Fan Days, too, but I'm not certain. Transfer clauses - I absolutely love the "Arrange Friendly" clause when selling a player up the ranks - often I can make a lot more from the home friendly with a big side than from the actual sale of the player, and the clubs tend to consider it a freebie. - Sell-on clauses start slow, but can come in handy four to six years down the line. I try to tag on, say, 25% sell-on clauses whenever I'm selling a player under the age of 30, and eventually I'll start seeing some revenue from those players moving on. - Purchase players with payments over 24 months. Sell players with "Immediate". This will keep your bank balance slightly higher than it would be if you did both "Immediate" or both "24 months" - in effect, you are getting a slight interest-free loan this way.
