THE 1991-92 SEASON:

I've decided to use my 1991-92 database to play out a season. I won't be managing anyone, instead I'll be simply observing. I thought it would be interesting to see how things play out, and contrast that to what actually happened. Mostly I'll be focusing on the First Division in England, but I'll also be keeping an eye on the other three English divisions, as well as goings on in Scotland, Italy and Spain. This is on Football Manager 2016 by the way.

Here is how the English Football League Division One looks:

So let's begin by looking at the clubs involved. First up, the defending English Champions, Arsenal:

ARSENAL:

 

They're obviously a very strong outfit. As champions of England they will also be representing their country in the European Cup. This is what I think their best eleven looks like:

I'd expect Villa to finish in the top third of the league, but I'd be surprised of they challenged for the title. They have a wiley manager in Ron Atkinson, and several very promising youngsters. Plenty to build on. I'd say their best eleven looks like this:

After finishing 4th last season, Leeds are definitely among the title favourites this season. They boast last season's Division One top scorer in Lee Chapman, and last season's player of the year in Gordon Strachan. Their strength in depth is proven by the fact that players like Steve Hodge and Rod Wallace arguably don't make their strongest eleven:

Leeds will compete in this season's UEFA Cup.

Of Course, Liam Brady's Celtic will be the most desperate to stop Rangers, but it was Alex Smith's Aberdeen who took The Gers right down to the wire last season.

The pick of the games is definitely the televised game at Anfield between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. It also looks like a relatively straight forward start for both Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.

Can Newcastle put some points on the board at Southend?

A big early season game at Parkhead, as Celtic welcome Aberdeen.

The Italian season also gets under way this weekend, as the Super Cup will be contested between Roma and Sampdoria.

So, we are finally at match day one for Division One:

DIVISION ONE:

A win for defending champions Arsenal, although they found it trickier than they may have expected against Luton:

     4-2 

Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday played out a stalemate, although Villa will probably have been satisfied with that, having had young debutant, Russell Bullivant, sent off. Wednesday were without the injured duo of Nigel Pearson and Roland Nilsson:

     0-0 

Chelsea are up and running, a Clive Allen goal enough to see off the challenge of West Ham. Paul Elliott and Ken Monkou were missing from the Chelsea defence, Monkou's condition the more serious of the two, as a dislocated shoulder threatens to sideline him for a few weeks.  Hammers midfielder Ian Bishop will be sidelined for a couple of weeks with fractured ribs, but the big blow for West Ham is losing Stuart Slater for an extended period of time due to a torn calf muscle:

     1-0 

Q.P.R. left it late at Coventry:

     1-0 

Despite dominating the game, Southampton were beaten at Crystal Palace. Worse news for The Saints is that star player, Matt Le Tisser, won't start his season for several weeks after suffering a double hernia:

     2-1 

Leeds were the biggest winners of the day as they hammered Manchester City at Elland Road. Eric Cantona and Gary McAllister each bagged a brace:

     4-0 

 A solid if unspectacular start for would-be-champions, Manchester United against Oldham. Captain, Steve Bruce, missed the game with a twisted ankle:

     2-0 

A Nayim header was enough to bag Spurs all three points at Carrow Road:

     0-1 

Having defended so well for so long, Notts County will be disappointed to have lost at home to Everton, while Everton will be relieved that the goal finally came:

     0-1 

Honours were even at Bramall Lane, as Sheffield United and Wimbledon split four goals:

     2-2

In the live televised game, Ian Rush bagged himself a hat trick, the second of which was a real pearler, as Liverpool destroyed Nottingham Forest in what must be the performance of the day. Kingsley Black did his side no favours, picking up a second yellow card when his team were 0-1 down. Forest midfield starlet, Roy Keane, missed the game with a virus, while Liverpool's Michael Thomas will be out for a few weeks with a sprained ankle:

     4-1

Newcastle's dreadful start to the season continues, while Middlesbrough are setting the early pace.

Rotherham remain the only team in Division Four with a 100% record.

SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE:

Rangers hammered Dundee United, while Celtic edged out Aberdeen in a thriller at Parkhead:

Roma collected the first silverware of the Italian season, edging out league champions, Sampdoria, in the Super Cup:

Onto the midweek Division One fixtures, following up on the opening day:

It's four more goals for Champions Arsenal, and two more for Ian Wright, as The Gunners hammer Oldham:

Sheffield Wednesday had most of the play against Crystal Palace, but Stan Collymore bagged the only goal at Hillsborough:

     0-1 

Chelsea edged out Wimbledon in a tedious affair at Selhurst Park:

     0-1 

Kevin Sheedy was at the double as Everton cruised past Norwich:

     3-0 

Major upset at Kenilworth Road, as Luton came from behind to beat Liverpool. This was no fluke either, Luton were worthy winners:

     2-1 

Man City bounced back from their opening day hammering at Elland Road to beat Coventry at Maine Road. City's sub 'keeper, Martyn Margetson was forced to come on up front for he final few minutes, after Niall Quinn went off with a thigh strain which will sideline him for a couple of weeks:

     1-0 

Nottingham Forest will be disappointed that they failed to take their chances, as cross city rivals, Notts County, came from behind to take a point at The City Ground:

     1-1 

Q.P.R. and Aston Villa shared the spoils in an entertaining encounter at Loftus Road. Ron Atkinson is really giving youth a chance at Villa Park this season, having handed debuts to Russell Bullivant and Steve Froggatt on the opening day, he has now given 16 year old Riccardo Scimeca a debut in defence. Scimeca was subbed off at half-time though:

     2-2 

Honours were even at The Dell between Southampton and Sheffield United. Brian Deane was strangely dropped by The Blades, despite scoring on the opening day:

     1-1 

Leeds followed up their opening day demolition of Man City with a fine win at White Hart Lane. Gary Speed and Gary Lineker each bagged a brace, so it was left Gordon Strachan to separate the sides:

     2-3 

Man United sneaked past West Ham at Upton Park:

     1-2 

 

So the table looks like this:

Six teams still have a 100% record, while four teams are yet to register a point.

This looks fantastic. I think I might have to re-download FM16 just to play it. Will be fun to Takeover my team Southend and see what I can do with them in Division 2. After hammering Newcastle 4-0 at home on New Year’s Day 1992 we sat top of Division 2. Unfortunately manager David Webb had a very public falling-out with chairman Vic Jobson later in January and announced his intention to walk away at the end of the season. The negativity flowed trough the team and we faded away to finish 10th. Many a Southend fan feels we’d have been possible founding members of the Premier League were it not for the drama behind-the-scenes.

 

2 questions I have from the screenshots. Firstly, are the stadium capacities all-seater or have you brought back standing for most of them, as was the case at the time?

 

Second, have a look at Stan Collymore. I wouldn’t have him as even a starter at Palace. He floundered as a winger in their reserves. Wasn’t until Southend signed him before the 1992/93 season and converted him to a striker that he suddenly turned it on.

Also, what safeguards have you put in place to protect against rapid inflation of transfer fees, wages and influx of overseas players into the English League? Since neither of these things really started to really happen for another 4+ years.

I have updated the stadiums to as they were at the time, I used the Rothman's handbook to do it so they aren't all seaters.

What can I do about Collymore? He became one of the best strikers in England in the early-mid 90s, I don't want to remove his stats. There's a player called Richard Bullivant at Villa who amounted to nothing there, he has weak stats, but for some reason he's getting in the team.

I have adjusted the transfer fees and wages in the editor for every nation, but for some reason while transfer fees remain quite low, the wages sky rocket in the second the season. There doesn't seem to be a way around this. I haven't really safeguarded on foreign imports, what would you suggest? I also have just a summer transfer window, but that's personal preference, in the next update I will change it to reflect the times.

DIVISION ONE:

An Alvin Martin own goal in the first minute was enough to give Arsenal all three points against West Ham. Arsenal knocked on the door, but the floodgates never opened:

Dalian Atkinson came into the starting lineup for Aston Villa, replacing Dwight Yorke against Man City, and his brace was the difference between the two teams:

Vinnie Jones struck against his former club, Sheffield United, as Chelsea eked out their third straight 1-0 win. Brian Deane was recalled for The Blades:

Spurs comfortably beat Coventry at Highfield Road. Peter Shreeves rang the changes for Spurs, dropping Erik Thorstvedt in favour of Ian Walker in goal. Thorstvedt would see action however, coming on to play outfield when Gascoigne limped off late on. Gudni Bergsson, Justin Edinburgh, and Paul Wlash also started:

     1-3 

Honours even at Selhurst Park, as both Crystal Palace and Q.P.R. failed to register. Palace were the better team, but couldn't find the breakthrough:

Liverpool bounced back from their Luton disappointment to crush Oldham at Anfield. Ian Rush, who scored a hat trick last weekend against, bagged all four goals this time around. Dean Saunders was brought in in place of Ronny Rosenthal, but hobbled off with a sprained ankle after just three minutes:

     4-0 

Man Utd continue to be efficient if unspectacular, putting points on the board without yet hitting top gear:

     2-0 

Norwich and Nottingham Forest played out a fair 2-2 draw at Carrow Road. Forest will be disappointed they couldn't hold on for their first win of the season. For Norwich, it's a first point on the board:

Both Notts County and Luton will have earmarked this fixture as a chance to pick up three points, and both will be disappointed to leave with one. County sub 'keeper, Kevin Blackwell, was forced into outfield action when Dean Thomas hobbled off. That's three sub 'keepers coming on to play outfield so far this season:

Sheffield Wednesday recorded their first win of the season, while Southampton are still looking for theirs:

     3-1 

In the televised late kick-off, Leeds maintained their 100% record by ending Everton's. The highlight was a rare goal for David Batty. Young right-back, Gary Kelly, made his senior debut, when he replaced Mel Sterland in the 84th minute:

Everton really need to improve, they were very lucky to get a point at home to Coventry. Teenage striker, Peter Ndlovu, debuted and scored for The Sky Blues:

Crystal Palace continued their fine start to the season at Maine Road. Man City need to improve drastically:

A draw away to Forest isn't a bad result, but Leeds will feel they played well enough to win. Forest are still without a win. Tony Dorigo has a groin strain and has been replaced in the England squad by Man Utd's Gary Pallister. Here he was replaced by Mike Whitlow. Youngster Jon Newsome started in the centre of the Leeds defence in place of Chris Fairclough, and will be pleased with his performance. Young midfielder Roy Keane made his first start of the season for Forest:

     0-0 

Oldham picked up a big three points against Notts County in a bad tempered affair. County scored first, but were let down by Craig Short, who was sent off for two bookable offences. Even worse for Short, the resultant free kick from his second yellow card foul led to the winning goal for Graeme Sharp. Young striker, Tommy Johnson, came into the Notts Co starting lineup, replacing the goal shy Paul Rideout:

QPR came from behind to beat Sheffield Wednesday at Loftus Road:

     2-1 

Mark Hughes scored to salvage a point for Man Utd at Bramall Lane:

Along with Leeds and Man Utd, Chelsea's 100% record is gone as they went down 1-3 to Southampton at The Dell. Chelsea took an early lead, and dominated the match in terms of chances, but succumbed to three goals from corners. Dennis Wise was sent off for two bookable offences:

A flurry of late goals at White Hart Lane saw Aston Villa hammer Spurs. Villa have made a good start to the season, Spurs not so much. Dalian Atkinson bagged another brace:

Champions Arsenal are the only team in the division left with a 100% record. Again it was "1-0 to the Arsenal", Ian Wright poaching the decisive goal:

     0-1 

The shock of the day came at Upton Park, where Trevor Morley tore Liverpool apart. The Reds simply couldn't cope with Morley's movement and finishing:

Arsenal are in a familiar spot, while the bottom four have all yet to register a win. Everyone has at least a point by now.

Really appreciate the time and effort that must have gone into this, and can only hope that further down the line SI can find a way to release older databases in their entirety for us to go through again. For a while I've been tempted to recreate the 2001-2002 season and copy the stats for everyone from that game, but it's a mammoth task to take on.

I know it's a long shot but any chance of a conversion for FM18, or maybe even FM19?

I really need to get some more donations to be honest, before I update it for a current one. It has taken me over a year to do this. It won't be too difficult to update the DB, but the graphics would take a lot of effort.

A terrible day all around for Notts County as they went down 0-2 to Wimbledon, losing two players to injury, and having two sent off in the process:

In the big London derby at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal swept aside Chelsea, keeping yet another clean sheet in the process:

A Tony Cottee double helped Everton to a much needed win, and condemned Crystal Palace to their first defeat of the season. The only downside for Everton is an injury to Pat Nevin that will keep him sidelined for a few weeks:

Things finally clicked for Nottingham Forest and their front two, as Sheringham and Clough scored to bag three excellent points for Forest at Crystal Palace:

In-form West Ham took advantage of a Mike Whitlow mistake to take an early lead at Elland Road, but a Gary Speed hat trick inspired The Whites to another resounding victory. The Hammers will have been worried to see Trevor Morley go off injured, but it doesn't look too bad:

Liverpool swung into top gear to demolish Chelsea at Anfield:

Southampton followed up their win over Man Utd, with an excellent victory over the other half of Manchester:

Norwich got a much needed win at home to Wimbledon. The only downside for The Canaries is a torn groin muscle by Chris Sutton, which will sideline the young striker for a couple of months:

Neil Warnock will be very frustrated by seeing his side concede an injury time equaliser at home to Sheffield United:

Sheffield Wednesday recorded a confidence boosting 3-0 win at Barnet. There were starts for John Harkes, Steve MacKenzie and Steve McCall:

Midfielder Alan Dickens came into the Chelsea starting lineup, and scored both goals as Chelsea beat Norwich 2-0. There were also starts for Gareth Hall, Paul Elliott and Craig Burley. Young defender, Michael Duberry, made his debut off the bench, as did 15 year old midfielder, Paul Hughes, who suffered the ignominy of being subbed off after having been subbed on. For Norwich, Henrik Mortensen made his first appearance of the season:

After being thrashed by QPR at the weekend, Spurs' season hit a new low as they went down 0-1 at Third Division Darlington. Darlington were worthy winners as well. 17 year old defender, Sol Campbell, made his Spurs debut, as did 16 year old midfielder, Steve Robinson. 15 year old right back, Steven Carr, made his debut as a sub:

West ham dominated at Halifax, but failed to build on Tony Gale's early goal. There were starts for Simon Clarke and Mike Small:

Man City were upset at home by Bristol Rovers. A late Michael Hughes goal gives City some hope for the second leg. Young midfielder Steve Lomas made his debut, but hobbled off injured after half an hour. There was also a start for Fitzroy Simpson:

Man Utd were held at home by Oxford. Alex Ferguson rang the changes, bringing in Brian Carey, Neil Whitworth, Lee Martin, Danny Wallace, 15 year old Terry Cooke, and 16 year old Paul Scholes, to the starting lineup. 16 year old Gary Neville made his debut as a sub:

Tony Cottee continued his fine goalscoring form by bagging a hat trick for Everton at Middlesbrough. There was a start for young midfielder, Phil Quinlan:

Paul Moody scored on his Southampton debut to give The Saints a slender lead over Brentford. With a strike force of Dean Holdsworth and Marcus Gayle, Brentford are not out of this one yet. Teenage midfielder, Tommy Widdrington, came off the bench for Southampton:
