DIVISION ONE:

Another Tony Daley brace helped Aston Villa come from behind to beat West Ham. The in-form Trevor Morley gave West Ham the lead, but in the end Villa were worthy winners:

     2-1 

Wimbledon picked up a great result at Coventry. John Fashanu would have had a hat trick if not for Steve Ogrizovic saving his penalty:

      0-3

Man City picked up a much needed win against in-form Everton. Even worse for Everton, Peter Beardsley picked up an ankle sprain that will sideline him for a few weeks:

Norwich will feel they did enough to pick up a much needed win at home to Chelsea, but they couldn't find the breakthrough:

     0-0 

A great point for Notts County at home to Manchester United. It was backs to the wall stuff for County, but if they stay up this could prove to be a pivotal moment:

     0-0 

Nottingham Forest recorded a great result at in-form QPR. Missing Teddy Sheringham due to a twisted ankle, Forest came out at half-time, 0-1 down, and put in a great second half performance. QPR goalkeeper, Jan Stejskal, suffered a dislocated shoulder that will sideline him for a couple of months:

     1-3 

Sheffield Wednesday ended a bad run of form by beating Luton:

     3-1 

Tottenham Hotspur just cannot get their season going. They are leaking goals left, right and centre. Southampton, on the other hand, are on a great run. Alan Shearer bagged himself a hat trick:

     2-4 

The big game of the day was at Anfield, and was, in truth, a letdown. A draw was a fair result. If I haven't said, Ian Wright is out for a few weeks with strained knee ligaments. Michael Thomas came off the bench for Liverpool for his first appearance of the season:

     0-0 

 

Oldham will be disappointed to leave Selhurst Park with nothing, In the end, they paid for a poor start:

     3-2 

Leeds are looking unstoppable. Four first half goals from Eric Cantona leaves Sheffield United bottom of the table. The Blades are missing Brian Deane for a couple of weeks to a pulled hamstring:

     4-0 

The table is starting to take shape. Man Utd are being held down by too many draws, they need to start putting some wins on the board to stay in the title picture:

Newcastle's loss at Plymouth has resulted in the first managerial casualty of the season:

Wolves picked up a big win against Middlesbrough, while league leaders, Watford, were stunned at home by Tranmere. Let's take another look at some players plying their trade in Division Two:

DIVISION ONE:

That prolific duo of Dalian Atkinson and Tony Daley were among the goals again for Aston Villa at Oldham, but in the end they could only take a point:

     2-2 

It was another successful day for Notts County, as they kept Chelsea at bay at Stamford Bridge. What County need now is a striker that will take the few chances they create:

     0-0

QPR continue to be a tough proposition, coming from behind to take all three points at Everton. Tony Roberts started in the Rangers goal, in place of the injured Jan Stejskal. Mike Newell replaced the injured Peter Beardsley for Everton:

     1-2 

Ten man Luton scored an injury time equaliser in a thriller with Crystal Palace. Luton were worthy of their point. 16 year old striker, John Hartson, started and scored for Luton:

     3-3 

Manchester United's season got a major jumpstart, as they hammered their old rivals, Liverpool, at Old Trafford. Youngsters Ryan Giggs and Adrian Doherty were among the goals, while Neil Webb scored the goal of the month. Unfortunately for Man Utd, Giggs suffered knee cartilage damage that will sideline him for a few weeks. Ian Rush is out with a hamstring injury, so Dean Saunders came into the starting lineup for Liverpool:

     4-1 

A Gordon Watson brace gave Sheffield Wednesday a fine win at resurgent Nottingham Forest. Wednesday striker, Paul Williams, went off with a broken toe:

     1-2 

Sheffield United are in big trouble, losing 0-2 at home to Norwich. Henrik Mortensen scored both goals:

     0-2 

Champions Arsenal underlined their title credentials by putting four past in-form Southampton. Over the ninety minutes, Southampton actually had the better of the play, but Arsenal were more clinical. The only downside for The Gunners is knee cartilage damage suffered by Alan Smith:

     2-4 

There was a much needed win for Spurs at White Hart Lane, although their only improvement was in luck rather than performance. Tony Coton will be out for a few weeks with a double hernia, so Andy Dibble was between the sticks for Man City:

     4-2 

West Ham continue to be formidable, coming from behind to beat Coventry. In truth, this should have been a lot more comfortable. The Sky Blues' misery was compounded by a sprained ankle picked up by goalscorer Kevin Gallacher, that will keep the Scottish forward sidelined for a few weeks:

     2-1 

Leeds will be frustrated to have lost ground on Arsenal, as they surrendered a lead at Selhurst Park:

     1-1 

To the table, and Man Utd are right back in the mix. The bottom three are beginning to see daylight open up between them and the teams above:

To the monthly awards - as mentioned earlier, Neil Webb's strike against Liverpool was judged goal of the month. Leeds brought home the other awards, with Howard Wilkinson being named manager of the month, and Gary McAllister bagging the player's accolade, ahead of teammate, Eric Cantona:

Aberdeen beat Motherwell in extra time to advance to the final of the League Cup. The Dons will meet Dundee United, who upset Celtic on penalties.

DIVISION ONE:

Backs to the wall stuff again for Notts County, but this time they were blown away. Craig Short getting sent off within a minute of coming on as sub hardly helped. Kevin Campbell started for Arsenal, and scored a hat trick:

     5-0 

While Arsenal are going full steam ahead, Leeds tripped up at Stamford Bridge. Leeds were by far the better team, but an inspired performance by Dave Beasant in the Chelsea goal kept The Whites at bay. If I haven't mentioned it, Vinnie Jones will be out for a few months with a damaged achilles tendon:

     1-0 

Spurs followed up their win over Man City by coming from two down to take a point at Goodison Park:

     2-2 

Luton turned in an impressive performance to beat high flying Queens Park Rangers:

     2-1 

Manchester United followed up their victory over Liverpool with a disappointing draw at home to Norwich. Even worse for Man Utd, Mark Hughes will be out for about a month with a damaged knee cap. Steve Bruce scored a penalty against his former club, but  the in-form Henrik Mortensen secured a point for The Canaries:

     1-1 

Nottingham Forest beat Manchester City 1-0, thanks to a lovely goal by Nigel Clough. In truth, this should have been a lot more comfortable, City were awful:

     1-0 

Honours even at Boundary Park. Carlton Palmer's broken shoulder forced Sheffield Wednesday's sub goalkeeper, Kevin Pressman, into outfield action:

     0-0 

Sheffield United manager, Dave Bassett, will sleep a little sounder tonight, after his side finally bagged three points. Coventry are looking set for a season of struggle. The Sky Blues are really missing Brian Borrows, who has shin splints, as they are forced to play the left footed Paul Edwards at right back:

     1-0 

West Ham's strong start to the season continued against Crystal Palace. It's hard to see The Hammers being in any danger of relegation:

     2-0 

Kevin Richardson's missed penalty cost Aston Villa dearly against Wimbledon:

     1-0 

So Leeds slip six points behind Arsenal after a bad few days on the road. However, Leeds do have a game in hand. Even better for Arsenal is that Aston Villa, QPR and Man Utd all dropped points as well. Notts County are bottom and remain the only top flight club without a win, which is pretty damning ten games in. Sixteen goals conceded isn't awful, but a paltry four scored shows where County's problems lie. Sheffield United beat Coventry to leap frog them in the table, although both are in the relegation zone:

The top teams roll on. Newcastle have installed Bobby Saxton as interim manager.

Bournemouth have dropped to third after losing 1-3 at home to Bolton. Birmingham are top after winning by the same scoreline at Leyton Orient. Second placed Stoke won 3-0 at bottom placed Torquay.

DIVISION FOUR:

League leaders Rotherham lost at Halifax, while Lincoln and York both won to close the gap to one point:

SCOTLAND:

Aberdeen beat Dundee United in a dress rehearsal for the League Cup Final. Rangers could only draw at Airdrie, but still go top after Hearts lost at Motherwell.

ITALY:

Inter beat Napoli:

Ascoli are the surprise league leaders:

A draw between Coventry and Chelsea at Highfield Road. Bad news for Coventry, their goalscorer, Peter Ndlovu, suffered a broken ankle. With Kevin Gallacher already out, The Sky Blues are light up front:

Crystal Palace won the battle of Selhurst Park, with a brace from Mark Bright. Palace will be glad to have John Salako back from injury:

Honours even at Goodison Park, and probably rightfully so. Southampton will be delighted that Matt Le Tissier is finally fit, and he made up for lost time by getting on the score sheet:

Luton will feel they played well enough at Maine Road to leave with at least a point. But they didn't, Niall Quinn bagged the winner, after David White's brace:

Arsenal are going to be hard to stop. Norwich dominated the game at Carrow Road, but The Gunners stood firm and took their chances. With Ian Wright and Alan Smith out injured, Kevin Campbell has stepped up to the plate. Robert Fleck is fit again for Norwich, although dropping the in-form Henrik Mortensen seems a bizarre decision:

     0-2 

With Ian Rush out for Liverpool, Ronny Rosenthal and Dean Saunders are making sure he isn't missed. Goal shy Notts County tried Gary Lund up front, but he failed to find the breakthrough:

An Andy Ritchie double helped Oldham to a great three points at Loftus Road. In a odd move, Andy Sinton came on as a sub for Rangers, and was then subbed off just a few minutes later:

West Ham's fantastic season shows no signs of stopping. Despite having scored a hat trick in the League Cup, Paul Warhurst found himself dropped back into the centre of Sheffield Wednesday's defence:

     0-1 

Tottenham's leaky defence continues to their undoing. Teddy Sheringham was back, and among the goals, for Nottingham Forest:

     2-3 

In a hard fought battle at Elland Road, Leeds were eventually able to put their old rivals, Manchester United, to the sword. Gordon Strachan scored against his former club, and the manager that discarded him; while Lee Chapman, who has had to wait patiently for his chance this season, scored the third when he stepped off the bench:

     3-0 

It's looking like Arsenal and Leeds are going to be the frontrunners for the title. Notts County are already looking doomed:

Let's have a look at what happened midweek:

LEAGUE CUP:

Nottingham Forest got past Crystal Palace on penalties. This was despite Forest playing most of the match with ten men, following Roy Keane's sending off:

Leeds are out, losing 2-4 to Newcastle on aggregate. It's a tough week for Leeds, this match coming on the heels of their win over Manchester United on Saturday. They have a UEFA Cup trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday, followed by a trip to Arsenal on Sunday. Howard Wilkinson juggled his squad a bit, giving starts to Simon Grayson, David Wetherall, Mike Whitlow, Glynn Snodin, Gary Kelly, and Andy Williams. Gary Kelly levelled up the tie, but as Leeds pushed for winner, they were caught twice late on:

FULL MEMBERS CUP:

Chelsea were embarrassed by Barnsley, despite being pretty much full strength. Neil Redfearn scored the winner:

Ipswich have knocked out Luton, with promising young striker, Chris Kiwomya, scoring a brace:

Villa needed penalties to get past Leicester:

Everton are through, Peter Beagrie's brace putting paid to high flying Watford:

Rumour has it that Alex Ferguson's job security is tenuous. Following a defeat against Leeds with a defeat against Manchester City is not going to have done him any favours:

A penalty shootout between Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday went the way of The Saints:

Sunderland upset Queens Park Rangers:

Blackburn always looked like a tricky fixture for a Spurs side that could be kindly called inconsistent, and so it proved:

More penalties at Upton Park, this time West Ham edged out Tranmere after both sides had traded own goals:

A disappointing few days for Leeds, who have seen two potential trophies disappear. On the bright side, perhaps a lack of fixture congestion will help them in their quest for the league title. There was a first appearance of the season for young striker, Rod Wallace:

DIVISION ONE:

Aston Villa were very lacklustre as they lost 0-2 at Chelsea. Kerry Dixon scored what surely must be the goal of the month, a thunderous long range strike into the top corner:

     2-0 

I'm not sure who will be happier with the 1-1 draw between Luton and Spurs. If Spurs are to make anything of their season, they need to be beating teams like Luton. On the other hand, Spurs have been so bad for most of this season that Luton might have viewed this as a great chance to pick up three points:

     1-1 

Alex Ferguson's job at Manchester United is hanging by a thread after a terrible performance, and result, at home to Coventry. Following defeats at rivals Leeds and Man City, Ferguson couldn't have hoped for a much kinder fixture than Coventry at home. His side never got going though. With Kevin Gallacher and Peter Ndlovu out of action, Robert Rosario was drafted in to partner Paul Furlong up front for The Sky Blues, and both strikers each grabbed a goal:

     0-2 

A draw was a fair result at Boundary Park:

     1-1 

Notts County finally scored a goal, and took only fourteen seconds to do so at The Dell! Unfortunately for them, they still had to play ninety more minutes, and with Matt Le Tissier eager to make up for lost time, County were beaten again. Alan Shearer is out with a fractured arm, but should be back within a week or so. Southampton fans must be relishing the prospect of getting Shearer and Le Tissier on the pitch at the same time:

     2-1 

West Ham just keep rolling, especially at Upton Park. Young left-back, Julian Dicks, looks a real prospect:

     3-1 

Sheffield Wednesday player-manager, Trevor Francis, decided to show his strikers how it's done against Wimbledon. Francis started himself for the first time this season, and bagged a brace in just over ten minutes. Unfortunately for Francis, he didn't have the stamina to see out the game, and Wimbledon's Paul McGee decided to upstage him:

     3-2 

Nottingham Forest and Everton are two evenly matched sides, and both looked to be destined to share the points at The City Ground, until the returning Peter Beardsley swung the game in The Toffees favour with a late penalty. Teddy Sheringham is sidelined again, set to miss a few weeks with an ankle injury:

Leeds pulled off the result of the season so far by beating Arsenal 3-0 at Highbury. With Leeds leading 1-0 through a fine Mel Sterland strike, the usually rock solid Tony Adams and David Seaman picked the worst possible moment to have a breakdown in communication - Eric Cantona pounced, and the title race was officially on! When all is said and done, this three goal difference might prove to be a key factor:

     0-3 

Liverpool, of course, can't be discounted from the title race. One or two bad results aside, they have looked good so far:

     2-0 

Sheffield United turned in by far their best performance of the season against Crystal Palace:

     4-0 

A loss for Leeds would have left them nine points behind Arsenal, but now they're only three and with a game in hand. That was a massive result. Liverpool are also in the race, and West Ham are wildly exceeding expectations. Alex Ferguson must get his Man Utd side on a winning run now, because another bad result in the near future will surely spell the end of his reign at Old Trafford. Sheffield United are out of the relegation zone. Coventry really needed that win or else they'd be starting to get cast adrift. Southampton will be thrilled with their season so far, while Forest, Man City, Spurs, and Sheffield Wednesday will feel they should be doing better:

Tony Cottee continues to be one of the most prolific strikers in the league, and his brace helped Everton to three points at Boundary Park:

     1-3 

Sheffield United picked up another three points as they are finally getting their season going:

     1-0 

Man City will be frustrated by the two late goals they conceded against Wimbledon, which turned three points into zero:

     2-1 

Arsenal welcomed back Ian Wright for the visit of Aston Villa, and his brace looked set to give The Gunners the perfect tonic following their defeat by Leeds at the weekend. However, Villa are a match for anyone in this division, and they fought back to claim a point, with youngster Steve Froggatt equalising late on:

     2-2 

Sheffield Wednesday could do with a win, and they may well feel they did enough to win at Stamford Bridge, but they didn't:

     1-1 

A few days after winning at Old Trafford, Coventry have gone to Anfield and won there as well. Paul Furlong's brace, including a late winner, means The Sky Blues are sitting with six points they probably hadn't accounted for. It's a big blow for Liverpool:

     1-2 

Bryan Robson's injury time equaliser against Crystal Palace may well have saved Alex Ferguson's job as Manchester United manager. There is question whether that draw is even enough, and Ferguson's job continues to hang in the balance:

     1-1 

Leeds took full advantage of Arsenal's slip up by hammering the division's whipping boys, Notts County. Mel Sterland and David Batty were rested, replaced by Gary Kelly and Chris Kamara respectively. The only downside for Leeds is a broken leg for Tony Dorigo which looks set to sideline the left-back for the rest of the season:

     0-4 

Southampton and Norwich played out a bore draw at The Dell. In fact, Southampton failed to register a single attempt at goal. Matt Le Tissier was rested, although he was brought on at half-time with Alan Shearer still suffering discomfort from his broken arm:

     0-0 

Leeds are now only a point behind Arsenal, with a much better goal difference and a game in hand. They also now have a seven point cushion between themselves and third placed Liverpool. Sheffield United have shot up the table. Coventry are still in the relegation zone despite their last two results. Notts County look done for:

A trip to Coventry would usually seem pretty straight forward for Arsenal, but after this past week, The Gunners may well approach the fixture a little tentatively. Manchester United pulled off a result when they needed it most. Despite playing most of the second half with ten men, Alex Ferguson's side held on for the three points:

Arsenal avoided slipping on the same banana peel as Man Utd and Liverpool, as they picked up three points against Coventry City:

There were plenty of chances at Selhurst Park, but neither Crystal Palace nor Chelsea could find the breakthrough:

Tony Cottee is on fire at the moment, and it's a good job for Everton's sake, as they struggled to break down Luton at Goodison Park:

Man City were a little bit fortunate to take all three points at home to West Ham. A 2-0 scoreline suggests a degree of comfort, but West Ham were the better side here:

It took Norwich a long time to break down ten man Notts County at Carrow Road:

Des Walker's header helped Nottingham Forest edge out Southampton in a tight match:

Tottenham Hotspur just aren't winning games that they should be, and other teams are looking a game against Spurs as a great chance to pick up some points against a soft touch:

A must win game for Notts County ended up how most games this season have ended up for them - they lost. In truth, they were lucky to come away with only a 0-1 defeat to Coventry City. Paul Rideout has yet to score this season, and just when you thought his contribution for his side couldn't be any less, he goes and gets himself sent off. Paul Furlong has had no problems scoring, and even better for Coventry, Kevin Gallacher is back from injury:

A fantastic late strike by the returning Alan Smith spared Arsenal's blushes at Selhurst Park:

West Ham upset Everton at Goodison Park, that is if a West Ham win is still an upset at this point:

Leeds will be disappointed to have been held at home by Norwich. The Whites simply weren't clinical enough:

A thrilling match at Kenilworth Road saw a flurry of late goals, with things going Southampton's way:

A last minute Keith Curle own goal cost Manchester City two points against Sheffield United:

A last gasp goal from young striker Lee Glover broke Oldham hearts at The City Ground:

Honours even in a London Derby at Loftus Road:

Another goalless draw at Hillsborough between two sides that need wins. On a day when teams above them dropped points, Manchester United failed to take advantage:

Wimbledon were well worth the three points they picked up at White Hart Lane. This result was the straw that broke the camels back for the Spurs board, and as a result, Peter Shreeves finds himself out of a job:

An absolute peach of a goal by John Barnes was enough to give Liverpool all three points at Villa Park, and help them close the gap on the top two. Aston Villa will feel they played well enough to earn at least a point:

It's shaping up to be a three horse race for the title. Spurs are in big trouble and it's hard to argue that a change isn't needed:

The big news from this weekend is that Alex Ferguson has been sacked as manager of Manchester United. 'Pop' Robson will take charge of first team affairs until a successor to Ferguson has been named:

Ferguson's sacking was the most high profile on a weekend that saw a lot of club boards come to the end of their tether with their managers:

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have named Director of Football, Terry Venables, as interim manager:

Let's take a look at what went down this weekend that led to all of this:

DIVISION ONE:

Chelsea raced into a two goal lead at home to Manchester City, but were quickly pegged back by David White's two goals. In a back and forth game, Kerry Dixon struck the winner for the home side. City welcomed back first choice goalkeeper, Tony Coton, from injury:

     3-2 

Crystal Palace were unfortunate to leave Anfield empty handed after a thrilling, topsy turvy game against Liverpool. Ian Rush was missing with a twisted knee - he was missing, but not missed, as Ronny Rosenthal and Dean Saunders stepped up to the plate. Stan Collymore should be fit for Crystal Palace's next game:

     3-2 

Gary Pallister's late own goal is the reason Alex Ferguson finds himself out of a job. Things were going so well for Manchester United - 1-0 up at half time and on the front foot. But Gary Penrice's header brought Queens Park Ranger's level midway through the second half, and with time ticking away, Pallister bizarrely sliced Les Ferdinand's cross past Peter Schmeichel:

     1-2 

Jeremy Goss scored his first goal of the season, as Norwich edged out Coventry:

     1-0 

Notts County finally picked up their first win of the season. Aston Villa are the unfortunate side with egg on their faces. It was backs to the wall stuff again for County, but they defended well, and young striker, Tommy Johnson, took his chance when it came. One thing I can't figure out about Villa is the regular starting of Russell Bullivant. Not that he's playing badly, but he is a player of little ability, and not much potential. Bizarre:

     1-0 

Oldham were comfortable winners against Luton:

     2-0 

Terry Venables interim reign in charge of Tottenham got off to a bad start, although they were arguably the better team at White Hart Lane. Venables drafted young defender, Sol Campbell, into the starting lineup. Ian Bryson has been the standout player for Sheffield United this season:

     1-0 

Gary Speed's brace gave Leeds three points at The Dell. In truth, this was a very comfortable victory for The Whites:

     0-2 

There's no doubt that the game of the day was at Upton Park. Nottingham Forest were scintillating in the first half, going in at the break with a three goal lead. However, West Ham pulled two goals back within three minutes of the restart, before equalising, falling behind again, and equalising again:

     4-4 

Everton turned in the performance of the day, as they blew away in-form Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Tony Cottee was inevitably among the goals again:

     1-4 

There were plenty of goals to be had everywhere but Highbury. George Graham rotated his squad a little, bringing in Pal Lyderson, David Hillier and Perry Groves, with Ian Selley coming off the bench. In truth, Sheffield Wednesday probably should have won, but they lack firepower - this was their third 0-0 league draw in succession:

     0-0 

Leeds win coupled with Arsenal's draw opens up a two point gap between the them. Liverpool are definitely in the title race, and Everton may feel they have a chance themselves. The Manchester United board obviously felt they needed to act or their league season might be over before Christmas. If Sheffield Wednesday don't start scoring goals they will be facing a relegation battle. Spurs are in the relegation zone. Notts County's win doesn't make them look any less stranded to be honest:

They looked on course for a second successive 1-0 win due to Mark Draper's beautiful free kick, but Sheffield Wednesday hit back with three late goals (and a missed penalty). Neil Warnock inexplicably dropped the weekends match winner, Tommy Johnson, in favour of goalless Paul Rideout. Kevin Pressman is in goal for Wednesday, because Chris Woods is out for a few weeks with a fractured wrist:

Nottingham Forest's front two turned on the style at Brammall Lane:

Wimbledon have had a poor few days, losing two consecutive home games. It's a big win for Luton:

Everton are really on song at the minute, and Tony Cottee is the deadliest striker in the country:

Post-Alex Ferguson Manchester United began life in the best way possible, with a 4-1 win over Tottenham. The scoreline flattered Man Utd, as goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was in inspired form. The season has been a nightmare so far for Spurs:

Coventry played well enough for at least a point at The Dell, but that's not how their luck is going at the moment:

     0-1 

West Ham rested a few players at home to Oldham, and they paid the price for it. Trevor Morley will be out for a couple of weeks with a twisted knee. Graeme Sharp has taken himself to thirteen league goals this season:

Everton are emerging as genuine title contenders. Nottingham Forest are really getting their season moving. Man Utd's win has them looking upward. Luton's win at Wimbledon was bad news for Spurs:

Tottenham's woes show no sign of letting up. They gave it a good go in the second half against Chelsea, but their poor first half was too much to overcome:
