What Happened Next?! - Part One

Focus: The Nations - Kyrgyzstan v Turkmenistan

When we left the signup, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan had just exited the World Cup 2014, which Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 in the Final. In the aftermath neither nation decided to get rid of their national coaches, instead prefering to go with the consistency approach - especially with the Asian Nations Cup coming up the following year.

Group Tables

Both nations emerged from the group stages winning their groups.

Knockout Tree

During the Q Finals and S Finals it looked as if Kyrgyzstan were set to defend their title, especially after a 5-0 whalloping of UAE in the Semis. However, Turkmenistan who had quietly progressed through the rounds gave Kyrgyzstan a knockout blow in the Final, beating them 3-2 to give Turkmenistan a famous victory over their arch rivals, their first ever major international trophy and revenge for Kyrgyzstan beating them in the final in 2011!

The only consolation for Kyrgyzstan was that they contributed the 3 best goals of the Tournament, with Alan scoring the goal of the tournament in the semi finals with a long range curling shot.

The tournament's top goalscorer was Selim Atas of Turkmenistan with 8 goals.

This meant that in the 2017 Confederation Cup, Turkmenistan would represent Asia.

Group Stages

Unfortunately Turkmenistan could do no better than Kyrgyzstan 4 years earlier, as they went out in the group stage. In fact some Kyrgyzstan patriots would say they did better 4 years previous, as they had finished 3rd tied on 6 points with Argentina & Italy, unlike Turkmenistan who could not record a victory.

KO Tree

Spin went on to beat England 2-1 in the Final

One year later and this was the moment, the World Cup 2018 - all the wonderkids were at their prime playing age of 28. How would they fare?!

World Cup 2018

Group Tables

Turkmenistan had their head in their hands at the Group Stage Draw when they found out that Germany and Brazil were in their group. However after smashing Costa Rica 4-0 in their opening game, they possibly produced their greatest ever result, beating the mighty Germany 1-0! A tight 2-3 loss to Brazil didn't matter as they still progressed in 1st place in the group.

Kyrgyzstan had a marginally easier group and followed England into 2nd place in their group. They beat Croatia 2-0 in their opening group game and then followed it up with an amazing 9-0 victory over Angola (Which is a World Cup high scoring record to this day). Despite a 0-1 defeat to England confidence was sky high going into the 2nd Round.

2nd Round

The 2nd Round again proved an ultimate disappointment, Kyrgyzstan dominating Spain before their got a smash and grab 0-1 victory.

For Turkmenistan it was even greater heartache as they went out on penalties to Mexico in the 2nd Round.

What made it even more disappointing was that if both sides had won their 2nd Round game, Kyrgyzstan would have faced Turkmenistan in the Q Finals, which would have meant an Asian nation the Semi Finals of the World Cup.

KO Tree

Holland went on to beat France 1-0 in the Final.

Asian Nations Cup 2019

Group Stages

In what would surely be the last performance when the players were at their peak, this was probably both nations last shot at glory. Both sides came through their groups with 3 wins out of 3 and were looking good for the rest of the tournament.

Kyrgyzstan Quarter Final

Turkmenistan Quarter Final

However, Kyrgyzstan were undone by a penalty shootout against the South Koreans. After dominating the game, Kyrgyzstan couldn't hold their nerve in the penalty shoot out, with Habib Halali & Mick Bubble missing the vital penalties.

Turkmenistan pressed on after a 3-2 win over the Aussies.

Turkmenistan Semi Final

South Korea knocked out Kyrgyzstan in the last round and they did the same to Turkmenistan in this round, with a narrow 1-0 win, leaving the defending champions to rue a missed chance.

KO Tree

In the final, South Korea lost to China 0-1, whilst Turkmenistan beat Uzbekistan in the 3rd / 4th Place Playoff on penalties after a 1-1 draw. However, with Turkmenistan only scoring 2 out of 5 penalties, it sort of highlights why they went out on penalties in the World Cup the previous year. Libertinho & Hermandinho were the successful penalty takers.

World Cup 2022

Group Stage

As all the players were starting to edge towards the twilight of their careers, could either nation have one final swansong in the limelight?!

Kyrgyzstan certainly got off to the best start possible, winning their group ahead of Spain (1-1 draw).

For Turkmenistan however, there would be no fairytale ending, as they could only finish 3rd in their group, despite a 5-1 win over Costa Rica.

2nd Round Results

Kyrgyzstan 2nd Round

The curse of the 2nd Round would strike yet again, with Kyrgyzstan again losing out to a vital late goal. They lost 1-2 to the Czech Rep thanks to an injury time penalty winner from the Czeches. th_WorldCup2022KOTree.jpg

Ultimately England would win the World Cup, winning 4-3 on penalties against Italy after 7 penalties each and 1-1 draw in normal play.

So heartache again for Kyrgyzstan & Turkmenistan and looking back on both nations it seems only reaching the 2nd Round of the World Cup would be their personal disappointments. If either nation had managed to have a bit more luck in the World Cup then I'm sure with their ability they could have gone a lot further in the tournament

After the World Cup 2022, with the players from both nations turning 33, they all decided to bow out from the international arena after the World Cup, with no one wanting to continue playing for club and country, instead wishing to lengthen their club careers.

As a result, the quality of both squads fell dramatically in a short space of time and both nations have now lost games that previously would have been a formality. This has meant that they have fallen down the World Rankings from both nation highs of around the Top 10:

World Rankings 1-27

World Rankings 28+

How cruel! Winning a group with Brazil, Costa Rica and Germany, and then losing on penalties against Mexico... This must be true heartache.

At least the Turkmeni came home with one Asian Nations Cup. That is cause for celebration.
