He was one of the stars of the German U-19 team that won the 2008 UEFA European U-19 Championship, scoring two goals in the tournament. Before his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen he was a transfer target of Real Madrid, but made it clear that he did not want to move out of Germany just yet. He has a twin brother Sven, who is also a footballer and plays for Borussia Dortmund. He plays in central midfield or as defensive midfielder, and excels at both. He has the potential to be a great all purpose central midfielder. He is a great tackler and a great passer of the ball with a fantastic eye for a pass and great anticipation. He also has a good personality for development, with high determination. He has a PA of -9 and in the screenshot his CA is 169 . His twin brother also looks like he could become a decent player, with a PA of -8 but Sven Bender is (at least according to FM) less talented than his brother.
