Rewind back to the 1970s and 1980s, the premier European football competition at the time was the European Champions Cup. This European Cup was a trophy fought for by only league champions. None of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place riff raff joining in! It was a straight knock out competition from the beginning to the end. This was truly a Champions Cup. I am pleased to release my version of European football as it was back in the 1980s.
This file has been long in the making, and due to hardcoding issues, I could not get it as perfect as I wanted. Therefore there is some artistic license present . I had to remove Liechtenstein as they have no league in real life, and this was messing things up in the European Cup. So I cut the European nations down to 54 from 55. I have resorted back to the use of away goals. I have rewarded the EC with the best financial package, followed by order of competition importance, ECWC then UEFA Cup. Each competition is an unseeded draw, so you could get 2 heavyweights meeting each other in the earlier rounds.
So here is what you get:
European Cup - 55 teams (Champions of each country plus the winner of the European Cup to defend their crown). Straight knockout with a Qualifying Round, First Round, Second Round, Quarter Final, Semi Final, and Final.
European Cup Winners' Cup - 54 teams (Domestic FA Cup winner of each country). Straight knockout with a Qualifying Round, First Round, Second Round, Quarter Final, Semi Final, and Final.
UEFA Cup - 120 teams (Best next placed teams in leagues of each nation, ranging from 2 places to 4 places depending on nation's coefficient). Straight knockout with a Qualifying Round, First Round, Second Round, Third Round, Quarter Final, Semi Final, and a 2 legged Final.
European Super Cup - This replicates how it used to be, with the winner of the EC playing the winner of the ECWC.
Known issues:
I wanted the runner up of a domestic FA Cup going into the ECWC in the event of the winner qualifying for the EC. However the game is hard coded in this scenario for ECWC to go to the next best placed team in the league. I have had to live with this. So you could see 2nd place in the league (or even 3rd if the top 2 teams are in the EC) being entered into the ECWC. The UEFA Cup places will be worked out accordingly.
I have had trouble with the game allocating low capacity stadia for finals, even though I instructed the editor otherwise. Consequently I removed some host nations so really low capacity stadia would not get picked.
Murrayfield is often picked for Scotland, and I have never managed to get Wembley picked for England.
If the winner of the EC is also the winner of their league then the 2nd placed team in the league also enters the EC. The UEFA Cup places drop down accordingly.
About 4 or 5 European leagues have an end of season split, that divides top and bottom, and sometimes middle. These 'middle' mini leagues are designed as a European playoff for qualifying for the Europa League or Conference League. Consequently they are pretty pointless now as the UEFA Cup placings are taken from the final league positions. Nations where there are waste of time splits are Belgium. Bulgaria, Finland, and Romania. Everything still works, there are just no rewards for winning these mid table end of season mini leagues.
I have included a Belgium file to remove the pointless end of season euro playoff (bel 1.31) - 24/04/2022
And finally, I did not change the Third Round dates for the UEFA Cup in 2022, so they will be scheduled during the World Cup. I blame FIFA for this
