  1. Ah OK - gotcha :-) I'd been reading the thread off and on, but was thinking solely in the scenario of sticking it to crap teams and I saw customized gegen and was thinking that was the plan. And I use a custom gegenpress against poor teams and counter-attack against equal/better teams and it's worked OK.

  2. If they are batterable, then you need tactics to batter them with.

If you're supposed to be gegenning, then why don't you have a higher LOE and counter? Those are key gegen tenants. And positive might not be enough for a crap team, go attacking. You need to overwhelm them.

And distributing to fullbacks seems to negate the inherent ability Jordan has to come deep, pick up the ball, and distribute. TBH Henderson, Bennacer, and Maddison can all do a job in that regard (although Bennacer's Dwell PT isn't the best for a fast-paced style). Angelino in attack mode is going to bomb forward on his own accord and can be picked out by the midfielders.

Anyhoo, just some ideas based on that last screenshot. That you're a top 6 club with Villa in season 4 shows you've got a lot good going, so I'm sure you'll sort it eventually :-)

  3. Thanks for indulging me @OJ403

Ya that was the last thing I tried before starting the thread :-) As I was out of ideas at that point. Maybe I'm just being a pedant and everyone else lives with multiple tactics not being independent of each other, in this regards? As my searching didn't turn anything up.

It just looks like a bug to me, or at a minimum poor user interaction, that one affects the other. If it has no impact on tactical familiarity then I guess it doesn't matter in terms of game play and is only poor UI design. I'm going to play some more 3-card monte with them until I've finally had enough :-)

  4. Hi folks,

I'd hoped there was a simple flag or shortcut menu option I was missing, so I initially posted this in the quick hitter questions thread and it got removed, so maybe it's not so simple:

    • How can you make your player assignments in "Tactics > Formation Screen" retain their assignments when you switch formations? I want Sissoko and Tonali in the opposite spot for my two formations, but if a switch one, it switches the other.
      2223_BHA_ARGH.thumb.jpg.2e39cad1da23958994c0b7c9a2656312.jpg
I really am missing something? Is "Save Team selection" it, but then you need to reload it each time?
I guess this is done to save DB hits, although I'd think it's light weight enough to be cached/autosaved for each tactic? Anyways that's neither here nor there.
    • Now this all lead me to more head scratching, do I need to have the players in their slots for each formation in Tactics or that is handled via "Player > Development > Position/Role/Duty" dropdown list?

Maybe it's the end of the week and my brain has melted, but any assistance to help me going 'round the houses here is appreciated. Thanks!

That is left sided with left footed but what about left footed right sided?

Oh sorry was getting lost in all ll/lr/rr/rl :-)

You mentioned Alan being left footed and you putting him in the DLP slot for the moment, so I was going off that DLP - MCa you had in the previous post and thinking of the DLP spot, not the right-sided one.

In that instance I reckon we're in the same boat if we put our Brazilians out right: Mez could work well from outside into the middle, but then what about the relationship with however is on his right hip. BBM (some straightforward mid role) then that relationship with the outside right player looks promising, but does that mean it's trickier to then work it back inside? I hope it's not asking too much of them to open up their body a bit to slip in the striker... this weekend will be the chance to run through my preseason and see. I'll report back!

  6. Dale Stephens - BHA - Center mid - after not getting much time in the 1st half of the season I loaned him out to a Championship team in January and he was happy to go. Glenn Murray, for the bench, no pace wouldn't want to rely on him as a regular.

Could see getting a couple seasons out of Stephens, but wouldn't want/expect anything more than 1 outta Murray.

Edit: Just checked Stephens doesn't hit 30 until the end of the season.

Haha sounds happy. With my team it’s the same. Miraculously I‘ve managed to convince Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Allan (Left Footed) To join Heart of Midlothian on a free. Great! I am so happy. Now figuring out how to implement him successfully. He is a threat with shots and got tech, dribbling and flair to get into the box and score but is originally a DLP with weaknesses in defending. I want to place him as a MCa rs. But this role is set up to go straight to the box which isn‘t working too well with left foot, naturally a right foot would be better, which is why he is playing DLP now. He is fairly good with his right.

he could also be used as a MEZa maybe coming more from a sided position would give him shooting opportunities with his strong left foot but sounds complicated.

Ya that 's why I am hoping a go-getting and skilled BBM is the way to marry up with the IF and striker (DLF/CF). As you say a Mez is maybe a bit much, as he needs to float out to come back in? Depends what you have outside him, if you have a a single winger (whether it a F/MF/WB) then you would have the room to do that I guess? If he's got the ball mid-left he can roll it on to an overlapping W or play it nicely or whippy off that left foot to an am or striker?

Previous season I had the guy I am trying as IF as my Mez, with an IW-A on the right, which is why I residually mentioned that role. He was my 2nd highest rated performer and IIRC had 9gs | 11as from largely the Mez/AM role, which is of course why I want to move him to a new position this season, cause I'm smart that way :-S

  8. More experienced folk than me will chime in with better advice I am sure, but a couple questions:

    • RE: closing down crossers - with IWs and WBs aren't they going to be occupying a lot of similar space? IWs already bringing out FBs to defend and/or IWs and WBs passing the ball amongst them in close quarters, since you have short passing on? If they are tika-takaing it in the corner, that's not going to promote crosses. What does it look like in game and also in player analysis in regards to heatmaps and passes made/received between those pairs? IFs are surely better (on at least one side?) if you want well spaced quality overlaps and crosses
    • RE: slow counter attacks - you've given your GK 3 things to do; distribute quickly, to CBs, to WBs... instruction overload? And maybe the GK doesn't have good enough attributes to do that work quick enough? Why not a single instruction to go through your playmaker and let him sort it out? Or just have distribute quickly, without the specific positions.

Anyways, I'm a newb so YMMV, but on first blush those two things had me thinking my ramblings above :-)

Yes, the two players compared for example

    1. Have vison 16 which shows in the image as 14. Anticipation is 15. Flair 12.
    2. Have 15 and it shows as 15. Anticipation is 16 too. Flair 15.

Although I have no clue if those are in the vision category..

    @Djuicer - https://www.passion4fm.com/football-manager-player-attributes/

Scroll down to "The Attribute Analysis - The polygon" section.

  10. ^Funnily enough my originally earmarked RS BBM/AM decided to go to Stoke for an extra 25k/week after agreeing terms with us first, so now instead I have a shiny new Brazilian BBM/Mez, who is left footed that I am going to try on the RS. I am closing in on the start of preseason matches, so we'll see soonish. He has get forward/get into box (I forgot which) so hopefully that helps.

My central midfield is the following and I hope to see some RS IF hook ups with that left footed wonder kid:

    BWM  BBM/Mez
           DLP

  11. Not a rhetorical question, I am just curious as someone looking to learn more about FM, but aren't there simply too many things going on in possession?

Express yourselves and be creative, but...

    • keep that passing tight
    • don't settle for anything until you're within the box
    • and do it really quickly (over and above the aggressive attacking)!

I have a picture of everyone piling into each other at the top of the 18yd box and mentally knackered - unless they have the correct mental attributes of course.

  12. I got caught out by this once.

Firstly, if you mutual terminate your current coach, wait for the first note about it in your inbox, and then the confirmation note in your inbox, which may come a day later, to confirm that he has indeed left.  Once those have happened then signing a new one should be no prob. Maybe you didn't pass through those gates first before going in for Giggs?

In regards to this twilight zone you are now in (Giggs has accepted your contract, but cannot sign because there isn't an open slot on your staff for him) I simply waited 3 months and then circled back and made another offer. Maybe for a manager you don't want to do that, but for me it was only a coach so no biggie.

  13. That's a good point on the counter attack I hadn't thought of much. My guy is decent, and my two prospects are too in that regards, but I was thinking them of shot-stoppers and sweepers and overlooking their Ederson-esqueness... seeing as I have distribute quickly in transition I should likely spend some time looking at that :-)

Edit: My 20yr old understudy has Passing-16, Throwing-12, Decisions-13, Vision-11. So that looks like a promising start (although first touch is awful), with a couple more years of training/cup matches.

  14. To piggyback on this, hope you don't mind OP, but are GKs largely 'plug and play'?

Assuming they speak the language of your league and have adaptability if moving continents or leagues, as long as they are simply excellent keepers metrics wise (Yes certain styles/formations favour a sweeper keeper vs a 'stay at home' keeper for instance) is that enough?

  15. That's a fantastically concise and practical overview @HUNT3R - really illustrates things well.

As a recent Covid-convert to FM, I've tried to think of the 3 things in a CSS way:

    • Mentality is the base paragraph or div style as such
    • Roles are specific 'p' tags containing a bunch of individual elements, helping ensure things are spaced correctly and work well together
    • Player instructions (whether the default ones that come with a role or specific ones you add for a role or player) being those individual elements

I might be straining (maybe wrong all together, lol) a bit there to maintain the metaphor, but it helps me try and keep in mind the micro changes in the larger macro view.

I put my BBM on to get further forward (provided he has cover) and that's what really made mine click. Has worked well with a CM(A) and a Mezz(A) although the Mezzala is my least favourite role to use for this.

Ya for sure my BBM has "Gets into Opposition Area", but because he has 'prefers left' and my DLP has 'prefers right' I'd been playing him on the left, which is likely not the best thing to do if I'm trying to link up with my right IF :-)

  17. I hadn't really looked too much into the South American players yet, largely due to the "work permit unlikely"/"work permit upon appeal" that pop up for lots of them and have been getting a fair few French players to this point instead.

I have a pretty Euro-heavy scouting team at the moment, but my Chief Data Analyst, has a full green bar of Brazil knowledge and I can mutually terminate my worst scout and get an SA one. Thanks for the nudge in that Southerly direction :-)

  18. Ha! Ya can't skate for nothing, don't ski, don't curl, so Canada asked me leave :-)

I've been playing a few preseason matches with a right-footed, right-side IF and admittedly not played good competition yet, but it does seem promising. I'd like to see my BBM making more breaking runs for cutbacks, to see how the passing works out but that's not the IF's prob, but ya so far so good.

  19. As you can see in the screenshot, I'm three seasons into my BHA save and after a couple seasons of scrapping it out in the bottom 1/3rd, we jumped up to the top 1/3rd in season 3, with a League Cup to top it off. And on the club/squad growth side humming and hawing about what I could do next.

IMHO the fixtures list fell nicely for us last season - (bar drawing ManUtd and ManCity in the FA Cup) in regards to home/away and big clubs/small clubs - we never had any hugely difficult stretches and maintained a good cadence throughout. Not to be a Buzz Killington, but repeating 6th place is going to require luck (heck 1/2 the squad balked when I said top-half expectations in the welcome back meeting), so with that, I'm kicking around what to do with 215M Transfer budget and 400k+ in wages burning a hole in my pocket.

I like to have the squad relatively set before preseason training starts, so I bought one young go getter to be the BBM in my midfield three, and otherwise I was going to just go with my existing players - which is Lewis Dunk and a bunch of kids - and bring a few more youngsters in after selling a handful of players from this past season's squad. So potential options:

    • DOF/Business side of me says keep our Chelsea Jr approach going, buy some kids from the continent, let them get to home grown status, and if they don't pan out in regards to a spot in the squad, sell them.
    • 6th? Stuff it, we can reach higher than that, let's press on and have fun with a few more top notch internationals... buy the most finished product attacking player (likely a striker) no older than 26 and maybe one other in the most needy place for a player to produce right now.
    • Do both to some extent, we have a lot of money, relative to where the club currently is.
    • Sit on the cash and hope our reputation can increase for another season, making BHA a more attractive proposition for players that won't currently consider us or will milk us for the please of allowing themselves to join us.

That last past about moving the ball quickly by having your passing/crossing/shooting lane open already without having to adjust body position is also one of the key parts, and actually if you play a possession heavy slow-build up game it can give you a crucial edge in breaking down deep defensive blocks.

I cover it in detail and where my inspiration/lesson for it comes from in my thread about my tactic and how/with what logic I built it (ice hockey, where space and time is in even in a much shorter supply, so the quicker you can keep things moving the more space you'll open).

I like that visual. Lot easier to see the curve of a stick and the openness of the player vs the curve of an instep.

Especially if you imagine working the puck around on a power play as a possession style in football... or a 5-on-3 power play as a faster paced tiki-taka :-)
