History
Atlanta United FC were founded in 2014 as an expansion team in the MLS, competing in their inaugural season in 2017. The club play their home games at the mightily impressive Mercedes-Benz Stadium which they sure use of with the NFL Atlanta Falcons. Although the club are young they have had a very impressive start to life by winning the MLS Eastern Conference in 2018, the MLS cup in 2018 and being runners up in the Supporters Shield in 2018.
Stadium
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium holds an impressive 42,500 (Expandable to 71,000, standing room to at least 73,019) - is is regularly expanded as the clubs average attendance is routinely around the 50,000 mark, with the record attendance for the side being 72,548 which they achieved in a regular season match against LA Galaxy.
Competitions and League Format
Atlanta United start the season in three (sort of four) competitions. I will detail each of these here:
Major League Soccer
The main competition in the USA, the MLS is split into an Eastern and Western Conference, the Eastern consisting of 14 teams and the western consisting of 13 teams for this season (from next season each Conference will consist of 14 teams with the inclusion of Charlotte FC).
Each team played 34 matches, including 17 home games and 17 away games. Due to the difference in the number of teams in each conference, each conference had its own schedule construction format.
After the regular season the top 7 in each Conference go into the playoffs, culminating in the best team in each Conference going head to head to win the MLS title.
Supporters Shield
This is the trophy given to the best overall team from the league stage of the MLS, there are no additional games played as this is just an overall table of both Conferences added together.
U.S. Open Cup
This is your typical cup style knockout cup which is open to clubs in a number of different professional leagues across the USA, not just those playing in the MLS.
CONCACAF Champions League
This is the major trophy in North American football, it is a knockout competition consisting of 16 teams from across the continent. This is a tournament that has been absolutely dominated by Mexican clubs with them winning 37 trophies since 1962. This is a tournament in which the USA only have 3 titles to their name, DC United, LA Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders being the only clubs to win the trophy.
