  1. I'd like to have the option to use the same scale for training facilities for attributes. IIRC they're in increments of 2 so (as an example and not actually the real figure) 16-17 is an 'Excellent' finisher. Another positive is that it stops players from thinking somebody with 13 or 14 passing isn't worth a starting berth for their team because they'd be flagged as 'Good' passer or similar.

On the whole though the standard of discussion on this thread is superb. @_Ben_ any thoughts on the matter given you non-numerical attributes career save?

  2. Counterpressing is too effective in it’s current guise, even players with low concentration, teamwork and workrate attributes will regain the ball too often. Even against much better teams it works too well.

Does FM still calculate possession via time in control of the ball rather than by passes? It seems as though there’s less instances of sides playing on lower mentalities having unrealistically high possession numbers but it still happens.

Another issue when playing against lower mentality teams is that it dies the feel as though composure is weighted accurately. Quite often despite how aggressively you instruct your team to press the opposition defenders can play out with relative ease.

For the sake of some balance the introduction of the LOE instruction is great and I’m really pleased with that

    I now presume not...

I just did a quick sky scanner and the quickest flight I can find next week is 19 hours - and goes via St Petersburg and Rome. I can't see why anybody would do that!

It's about a 480km journey so would take about 5 hours by car, which is still further than I initially though it would be.

The Italian rail network is supposedly pretty good, maybe that's what he hundreds of fictional San Marino fans will do :D

    Windfall

A comfortable Coppa Italia win over Triestina has given us our first shot at some money in this game (there is minimal end/pre season money for Serie B). We have been drawn against Juventus in the First Round:

This fixture causes all sorts of congestion with league games and such like but does give us a shot at some money:

We will net nearly half a million regardless of the result. Juve are still in their 41k seater stadium and appear to be pretty much selling it out every week. However, they only seem to be up to about 800 away fans, which is a shame. In fact, in their First Round tie last year, at home to Palermo - only 223 away fans turned up. I don't know if we get an even split of gate receipts from this game but it'd be nice to pick up some extra money and get as many fans to make the six hour flight as possible, even though we are incredibly likely to lose and lose heavily.

It can't be a direct 6 hour flight surely?

Is what I'd say is how we played Saturday.

    * Stay wide

    ** roam from position

Vardy (or any striker with it it)  is frustrating of FM because of his tries to beat the offside trap trait, his positioning is too high up regardless of role

Still got a fighting chance Jimbo. Unlike the one season I had in the Premier League with Newcastle Town on FM11. I just about avoiding doing a Derby by finishing above Derby (ironic huh) and still something like 18 points off safety. :D

I got 15 points with Burton in the Championship once

  7. I've just had my most successful season (probably the only full season I've completed tbh) by getting Bochum promoted as 2. Bundesliga champions but it was an absolute chore. Despite having one of the better technical sides in the division I ended up 1-0ing my way to the title through set pieces and my striker converting a a very difficult chance or spring from a corner every other game. The shot volume from both sides was poor and I didn't concede many open play goals either despite having defensively mediocre fullbacks. My general observations are (I've not read this thread at all this FM iirc):

Poor crossing locations and decisions (notably running into the opposition defender before crossing)

Lack of forward movement from CMs

The understanding of space is frustrating from players

    Not enough penetrative passing

The positive is that defending is much more realistic and it looks more like professional football more often than previous additions but at the cost of enjoyment on my part.

  8. Too many penalties, goals originating from throw ins, set pieces and the second ball of set pieces, Crossing seems unbalanced and dribbling feels too easy.

The tactical additions are good, I'm especially enjoying being able to adjust the line of confrontation but the game feels like caricature football, too arcade and akin to Ultimate Team, not realistic and tense football.

  9. I've only played about 8 games of one save but besides a few early games (as Leicester) I'm getting absolutely battered, my tactic isn't particularly attacking and I'd say it's fairly conservative if anything.

                     DLF S

                      AM A

    WM A  CM D  CM S  WM S

FB S    CD D  CD D   FB S   (The fullbacks were more aggressive initially but they were being beaten quite high up the pitch or caught out of position)

                      GK D

Cautious or balanced and rarely do I use any TIs. I get opened up by dribbling far too easily and I've tried engaging higher and more intensely but that just makes me easier to play around and sitting deeper gives the opposition too much space. Individually my players aren't great but they're mostly mid table standard and I had to turn it off earlier because I just couldn't be arsed seeing my players being waltzed past time after time. I've given out plenty of advice on here, by no means am I an expert but it's massively frustrating to feel so helpless.

I'll start another save with a different side because I don't really like playing as us but I thought the familiarity would help, unfortunately not :(

There are one or two bits of advice that I do sometimes take- especially about a player who had been booked and to get him to ease off tackles and comments on the number of fouls given away.  On the whole, however, most of the advice is pointless and so ignored.

The worst is that "we should try and put more crosses because we're winning most of our headers today", it totally lacks any context and it makes me wonder why that piece of 'advice' was even put into the game.

  11. This is tin hat stuff but does anyone else feel SI don't really care a great deal about tactics? At a guess probably 75% of the user base aren't concerned with tactics as they just like to buy better players than the AI (which isn't hard with their ***** squadbuilding) and bung them in a 4231. I reckon most players don't care about vertical compactness, more accurate and pressing variations amongst other things, really it's a bit niche. It's good business sense for SI to pander to the lowest common denominator when it comes to the tactical side but leaves the more dedicated players frustrated yet we're likely to buy the game anyway.

    The 'new' features are:

Zones where you might be exposed - this looked pretty off to me anyway in the Watford 5311 as there was an apparent weakness behind the DLP-D when there was coverage behind the other midfielders.

'New' roles - basically a DM-s with get further forward ticked, a CM with roam from position enabled, a wide midfielder with cut inside on and a centre mid with an old PI instruction reintroduced.

The IWB with the option of attack and defend duties is nice but probably should have been done when they were fixed in 17.3 but credit where it's due its an improvement.

Dynamics affecting tactics which I hope is only a slight boost in familiarity or whatever because I can see dynamics being over-egged as a feature unfortunately.

Mark specific position instead of player, not really a feature that.

This is an overwhelmingly negative post and I can't remember being so scathing about SI before but I think this might be the first FM game I don't buy immediately if at all. Sega/SI's business model relies on yearly releases but I think they're probably hamstrung by the timescale though, it's difficult to drastically improve a game that needs significant work in whats probably less than 2 year development cycle.

However I'm well aware it's still fairly early days yet anythings could change.

Continuing on the subject of tutoring, once i've seen that the tutorees determination has risen to the same as the tutors, can i cancel the tutoring without any negative effects? just want to speed up the process of getting my tutors onto new young players.

I'm under the impression that the determination of the tutoree will only rise to the level of tutor and go no higher, so there there doesn't seem to be a point in continuing with the tutoring once its reached that level

I've read the SFraser youth thread which gave me some vital info on tutoring but obviously that's from 2011 so would be glad of any other threads that will have more info specific to the later games

If you cancel tutoring the tutor won't be able to tutor again until the initial tutoring period has finished IIRC.
