@Obaaai have to admit, although it might be a little obvious, didn´t consider it "enough" maybe. I was more under the assumption if players meet a little bit of needed attributes for possession based game it is okay, but it might not:-) i tried a few games and put in plea as a striker who is much more intelligent and also linton maina, a winter transfer, and it already went better. thanks for your advide. apart from that, do you think the tactic itself is okay?

Hi everyone,
I am enjoying the FM series for almost 10 years now and still wouldn´t consider myself as being a tactial genius. I always play a slow tempo, possession based 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 as this suits my general likes in football. So far over the years this tactic was quite successfull, but this FM I am really struggling to get anything done. I would appreciate if you could have a look at my tactics and comment on it.
I am showing you my home and away tactic (Home games are okay, away games are..... very bad):

I have tried some variations in CM (MEZ on Attach duty) and the STriker (put him on DLF), but nothing works.
For me it seems I am not managing to get enough chances while the opponent constantly can generate good chances via through balls (I also changed one of the CD to cover duty).

When using custom files, who knows what has been done in them. So if you experience something strange with custom files, especially regarding rules and such things, I'd advise you to start a game without them and see if it's still there. If it is, then a bug report is your best bet. If it's gone without the files, then only the creator of the file knows if it's intentional or not. Sometimes creators makes mistakes, I know I did in my Norwegian lower league file!
all right, good to know for future and now i will start a new safe without the files after having been shocked when i sold 3 cd in one week:-) ha, i can imagine it is quite difficult to create own custom files.

It doesn't happen for me without files, so perhaps it comes from the files you use. You should probably ask the creator of the file.
thanks a lot, @XaW this it is - i was not aware that the files contain information like that. i coulnd´t find this setting in editor data, but anyhow, for now at least i am sure why it happend:-)

sorry to ask guys, but.... is there an issue with the transfer window being open all time? i usually use real fixtures & results in editor and started a save on 22/11 with current league tables in bundesliga. when i sell a player, he immediately leaves, meaning in November and not in next Transfer window in January. Is there a dramatic change of rules in real life or.... a bug:-)?

i tried with tighter marking, but it didn´t work. i am not a fan to use get stuck in due to the amount of yellow cards received

@CARRERAThey are not winning back posession as fast as I like although I use Gegenpress.

i´ve quickly simulated with your tactics and it seems to be okay. maybe i need to get used to this crazy tactic;-)

Addition: I am facing issues to have more possession than the opponent´s side, expected goals is not very good. At least I am winning a few games:-)

Hi all,
I am trying to achieve a possession based 3 at the back tactics since weeks, but it does not work good. Seeing a lot of teams using the 3 defender formation during European Championship made me more want this tactic to work.
Some General thoughs about my tactic:
1. I tried to use TI to keep posession, but also used some instructions with more risk to lose the ball (e.g. Counter, More Creative Freedom), the approach behind this is to also generate some chances by quick transition or surprising moves.
2. Midfield: I am playing with 2 CM and 2 CAM - generally my assumption is that BTB goes forward and more or less overlaps the ap in front of him to create surprising moves. Same Idea for CAM being an AM with attach role: I hoped he would move into channels next to the striker.
3. No overlapping: I understand these instructions that players on the wings are being overlapped. As I don´t use Wingers, IF and no MEZ, I am expecting overlapping is not working very well. The opposite instruction, Underlapping, was never very clear to me - do you think it would help:-)?
4. High Line: for me possession still means to win the ball up in the front and as I have 3 offensive players I think that should be fine.
Please see below my tactic and I would be very thankful to hear your thoughts about this.

@causeforconcern hahah, i feel you - for me it is exactly the same:-) i also have tried to adapt step by step to some of the instructions/guidance given here, but when i simulate a few games it seems there is not too much of change. but i hope this weekend i have enough time to give it another shot. anyway, would be nice to hear from your way to more brilliance ;-)))

wow guys, thanks for further feedback, really appreciated you took so much time to help me. i am curios now to try things out and finally get a 5-3-2 working :-) today i am on a virtual beer tasting, so should do it after or rather tomorrow:-))

thanks phnompen, i was already getting mad not being able to set up a 5-3-2 while classic tactic work fine. "good" to hear you were struggling as well and interesting to see how you found your approach! i am playing this game for quite some time, wouldn´t call me an expert, but you think you understood it a little;) funny you mention that you made sacrifices in regards to posession tactic, it feels hard to me to do so, but i think it is a good approach. combined with the advice of the guys i hope i can get the tactic working much better very soon. also helpful to just try new tactics in one single game to find balance, will try this as well:-)

thanks a lot for your valuable feedback and it really helps as I assume I was thinking too much and extreme into one direction.
As I am such a big fan of pressing, but also posession, I really wasn´t spending too many thoughts on high pressing line giving a big gap between the lines (among other things you mentioned).
I think I will work on the formation again (making it less back heavy) and consider your feedback and give it another shot - I am sure I will be having more questions;-)

Hi Guys,
for quite a long time I am trying to achieve a successful 5-3-2 tactic (or other 3 CB and striker approach), but it is not working for me. 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 tactics are working fine, but it seems I am not good enough with other tactics.
Could you please have a look at my tactical setup and let me know your thoughts about it? I also tried a setup putting DM to CAM (DLP and BTB on CM), but same result - no good xGoals ratio and not winning a lot of games. I also changed a bit the MEZ role between support and attack, also I tried different roles on the wings.
I am a big fan of possession football, this is why I am trying to achieve this with a lower tempo.

Hi guys,
I have a question regarding the player and opposition instructions.
In my current tactic I advise my wing backs to mark tighter - what happens if I choose "mark tighter" in the opposition instruction on opposition´s wingers?
Is my player confused because he either marks tighter his direct opponent (which also could be the opposite wing back) but also is requested to mark the attacking winger?
What is the best approach to achieve a good defensive for this?
