  1. Although I don’t experience the ‘not getting youth players through the ranks’ others seem to (I guess that boils down to me totally accepting that getting the odd player who makes the first team is pretty normal nowadays) what I do find issue with is the sometimes ridiculous distribution of stats/physical attributes a number of players seem to have….

5ft1(not 10 or 11, literally 1) fullbacks/defenders seem to be more and more common occurrences in my games… along with the dreaded 1 strength. Seeing it more and more as games progress, especially on my own youth set ups.

  2. @guster73- Your save sounds incredibly similar to mine.

Finished 2nd, 2nd, 3rd and 2nd. If I get 98 points then Real will just go get 105 or something stupid. They’re an unstoppable juggernaut in my save with Mbappe smashing in 30-40 goals a season without breaking a sweat… and even when he does they just bring on one of six world class forwards to replace him

Starting to doubt I can ever realistically catch them!

  3. I use the exact same instructions in and out of possession in my 442, with only a couple differences in transition (I don’t regroup for instance, nor counter-press; just leave that as is and tend to distribute quickly though if wasting possession too much I’ll leave that blank or go to CB’s)…

The ‘hit early crosses’ seems to be the key for me, something about that instruction just helps open games up unexpectedly.

Once you win the league, you will always win it after that unless you make some really stupid (I mean like AI-level stupid) decisions in terms of squad building or tactics. IMO there's little point in playing a save beyond that point as it becomes rather tedious.

Just lost the league to PSG by a point, having won it the year previously... (they got my hopes up on final day, being held 1-1 by Nice until the 79th minute whilst we steamrollered our final game 4-0). We lost one game all season! PSG lost two but I had a couple more draws.

.. in a nightmare end to the season we also managed to blow our Euro Cup hopes (dropped out of CL group stage also by a point, picking up only 1 from final three games) - beat Feyenoord 1-0 in semi final first leg, went 2-0 up in second leg after 30 mins so made the ill fated decision to praise my players and all hell broke loose, proper nuclear level catastrophe with two goalkeeping howlers to boot - lost the tie 4-2, conceding three goals in 13 second half minutes.

Only got myself to blame really - I got over ambitious tactically (1/2-0 wasnt enough anymore, I chased 4’s and 5’s instead of closing games out) and a little complacent in areas... my signings were okay but I failed to bring in a CB after one left in Jan. Little slip ups like that.

Might be easy for others but the game is certainly keeping me on my toes. PSG’s squad is getting ridiculous and major clubs are sniffing around our top players with some signalling they’d like to move on.

Probably one of my more challenging saves this year tbh.

    I manage Monaco btw.

  5. I’ll try and keep this as brief as possible considering the info I want to discuss..

Not long started a new wave with Monaco after fancying managing in a league I’ve not previously tried.

Just coming in to January and on the face of it all is rosy in the garden.. two clear of PSG (drew 1-1 with them recently) at top of league after 16, couple key signings have settled in well, training and youth facilities are to be upgraded and of course at Monaco money isn’t going to be an issue.

However, delve a little deeper and things just seem bizarre to me and not really something I’ve experienced before. Wissam Ben Yedder, star striker with all the attributes to be a class AF/F9 at this level has 4 in 15 games and three of those were penalties. He even hit the post four times (wish I was making it up but I’m truly not) in one game against Nimes, it became almost laughable. Kevin Volland had two all season, Jovetic is yet to score whilst Guebbels has one from the bench. My wingers seem to be popping up with hatricks here and there (3 separate ones have them this season), my 2 CM’s will randomly bang them in from 30 yards despite not really having that capability or tactical instructions and vast majority of my assists come from Ballo-Toure at LB. Praising, criticising, slowing down tempo, reassuring - tried the lot and just can’t seem to get anyone scoring with regularity.

Used the same three tactics over multiple saves (with minor tweaks to suit team etc) and always had 20+ goals a season strikers, so cant put my finger on what exactly is happening here. Tactical familiarity is maxed in my main formation too.

likewise with player development - well versed with training, coaches are all decent enough personality and ability wise, facilities are great, young players are getting game time yet barring the odd exception as seeing drop offs in ability in large swathes of players, regardless of their potential and playing time.

Anyone ever experienced a save like this, where everything looks good on the face of it but really is a bit of a frustrating mess?

  6. @Peljam- Barring the wide target man and your attention to detail opposition wise (which from tonight I think I’m going to adopt because man, the idea of kicking threats out of the game is right up my street ) out tactics are pretty much identical.

As a matter of fact on closer inspection our TI’s and player roles (WTM aside) are exactly the same.

Needless to say I’m a fan! Your wide target man idea is beautiful, though I can’t bring myself to use it. Would feel like cheating.

    I disagree with OP.

I had great success with 4-2-3-1 formation with classic wingers, not inverted wingers or inside forwards, just simply 2 wingers.

Now I'm playing 4-4-1-1 which is technically formation with 1 striker and doing pretty well. I could play it as 4-4-2 but I like that one striker being dropped as SS since I think he's more contributing without the ball defensively and with the ball he can either connect the play or come to the box being almost like second striker. One thing worth mentioning in my 4-4-1-1 is that my AM and ST are not aligned in pitch vertical axis but are positioned like two central forwards but one is dropped to AM spot. I find it working better in my tactic than putting them one behind another.

Also been using a 4411, with a target man up top, winger on the left, attacking mid on the right and my CAM fulfilling all sorts of duties... works really well. Variety in attacks and goals scored is really pleasing to watch,

Common mistake with single striker formations, and I’ve been guilty of it in the past, is not setting up the support around them properly. That and focusing most on pace and getting in behind rather than the physicality required to hold the ball up and give players in support the time needed to contribute effectively in the final third.

  8. Hi guys... great to see some challenges still going strong (and some not so much :(). Been lurking in the shadows last few days following everything.

After a long week of work and one failed attempt I’m ready to go at it again, though may stick to more familiar surroundings with England.

With the advanced database and loading players from unplayable leagues what is everyone’s general set up for English saves? Unsure which divisions to load.

  9. Annnnnddddd sacked, first season in my fist attempt

Trying to pinpoint what exactly went wrong with Bitonto.. after a promising start everything just fell apart, picked up a few injuries (I already had only two very poor fullbacks and absolutely no natural wingers) confidence was low and just remained that way - no matter what I said to the players it was received badly, no manner of team talk could motivate them... set expectations high they’d get demotivated, take the pressure off they simply wouldn’t bother.

Every team meeting was an utter calamity and did more harm than good!

Same with tactical changes - try and attack and we just weren’t good enough and got spanked on counter, sit back and regroup and it was just wave after wave until we’d ultimately collapse and concede 3-4.

Went from beating Serie B opposition in the cup and winning 2 of opening 3, one of those against the eventual league runners up, to scraping 4 points from the next 22 games

I have been away from the game for a little while so perhaps jumped in at the deep end a little.

  10. After my solid start now lost 7 of last 8, drawing one, dropped in to relegation zone, alienated my entire team by giving them the water bottle treatment (did slam a can of Diet Pepsi at home so seemed fitting), board won’t give me a kitkat let alone start me on training courses, star CB is still out injured, strikers couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo, everyone’s either a teenager with 5 determination and concentration or nearing retirement with 5 pace and acceleration. I have no natural fullbacks, no natural wingers, no pace...

    You love to see it.

  11. Had such a solid start with Bitonto - knocked out at 3rd round of cup qualification by Serie A Cagliari (admirable 0-2 loss) having beaten a Serie B side along the way and have 7 points from opening 3 games after a last minute Sirri (CB) tap following some fortunate free-kick bounce found him unmarked far post against Monopoli (predicted to finish 7th). Also beaten Ternarna who sit top 6. Riccardo Lattanzio has 4 in 3... early doors I know but signs are good.

All a bit surprising considering i don’t think I’ve played more than 8 mins with the same tactic in place  Honestly, I’m changing game to game, making tweaks here and there, constantly reacting in game to the point where we end up with something never before used as our tactic. My players must feel dizzy by end of a game trying to understand it all, is madness.

Anyone else do this or are you for the most part settled?

  12. Finally settle on my 352 set up which after a few games of tweaking shows very promising signs, totally ditch 41212, and within 30 minutes of next game star CB goes off with a hip injury and is ruled out for 5-6 months.

Left with only two natural first team CB’sa after another one was ruled out for six weeks after a training injury.

    Didn’t see that coming.

  13. Started my save with Bitonto last night - will do a proper write up next week when I have a bit more time but for now some cliff notes.

Pleasantly surprised with some of the players already in the squad - the star of the show being 25 year old attacking midfielder Leandro Taurino who possess above average pace and passing (for the division) and some all round solid stats - coupled with two all round but unspectacular 32 year old strikers, a whole host of CM’s, three decent CB’s and 2 GK’s (though they aren’t the greatest) the spine of the team is most certainly there.

However, there are issues - fullbacks and wingers are extremely poor and limited in numbers - we have one natural LB, our RB is actually a RM and there’s one lad who’s 19 that can play LM but other than if we were to put Taurino at LW there’s simply no cover there.

To that end I shall be utilising the players available and playing 41212 Diamond Narrow, with 352 as a back up formation.

Midway through pre-season at the moment having won 2 and drawn 2 - everyone’s contracts have been renewed but that itself has me a little one edge.

Star players such as Taurino, two of my CB’s (Petta and Sirri, who are going to be key to survival) all had agents that insisted on quite nominal release clauses - I managed to negotiate to have these expire at end of 21/22 season and will see if I can renew again mid season without the clause of at all possible - would end up with a combined 345k for the three which quite frankly just isn’t ideal and would leave gaping holes in the side).

Struggled to find an assistant of any worth thus far but bought a couple coaches, 1 scout and physio and have offers in on a couple HOYD members - due to size of club it’s been a struggle finding anyone willing to join. We just aren’t of interest apparently.

Looking forward to the season ahead - will provide pictures and more depth/context etc as and when I can.

Until then, it’s Cesena in the first round of Italian Cup Qualifying - what better way to start than having my pants pulled down and bottom spanked early doors :)

These reviews of taranto are exactly why I picked them!

What better than to make a poor city with a pollutant steel factory nearby a powerhouse of Italian football!

That and I watched the Maradona documentary the day before picking them which had alot of symmetry as Naples was considered an awfully poor place, full of disease and ran by the mafia.

Haha, I commend your efforts and totally understand the reasoning - bring Taranto back to its historical glory via the means of football!

Only in FM are such things possible!

Don’t know anything about the football club but assuming the location and it almost a right of passage for Italian clubs to dissolve and start again assuming this has also happened to Taranto?

Cavese tempted me for a while for that reason alone... They’ve got more lives than most cats that club!

Yes and I googled Taranto just now... I agree, no reason to move there, not even on FM!

The google reviews are pretty spot on tbh - most of them, and a very damming article about the pollution etc, came well after we had visited - just fancied a look at all the potential Greek history, museum etc before mooching to Venice. Ahh those were the days, lucky to get to a trip to Tesco Express let alone Venice at the moment!

It really was a drab and dreary affair - extremely disappointed and genuinely felt unsafe for large parts; and I’m a 6ft3 bald bloke with a Vikingesque beard!!!

In my experience this will not affect your job. If your results are bad, not fullfilling the board expectations when it comes to signing might be the last drop that gets you sacked, but good results is way more important.

I have maximum board confidence with Rimini now, yet they are still extremely dissapointed that I haven't signed U23 players.

Bitonto it is then - tiny stadium, never been above Serie C in their history, pretty part of the world... finally after two evenings of deliberation I have my club!
