Yeah, they got promoted to League A in the Nations League in the autumn though. Beat Serbia and Turkey, drew with Russia. Beat Iceland in the Euros playoffs.
They're not there just to make up the numbers.

People writing off Hungary in that group, tbf the other three teams all being similarly strong means they could all take points off each other.
Could easily see Hungary nicking a 1-0 against Portugal/Germany and digging in for a draw somewhere. Could go through in second with four points if the other results go for them.
England v Hungary in R16 would suit us.

When you read stuff like that, and you see the way he speaks, it's so easy to see why the players love him
QuoteWhen you go out there, in this shirt, you have the opportunity to produce moments that people will remember forever. You are a part of an experience that lasts in the collective consciousness of our country. You remember where you were watching England games. And who you were watching with. And who you were at the time.
Absolutely lost it at this bit. Poetry. I don't care where he plays Grealish, he can keep the job forever as far as I'm concerned.

Simple question. What is everyone listening to? I'm rubbish at making time for podcasts normally but don't want to miss anything good.
Been working my way through some of these:
Country-by-country previews with a local journalist from each place... but a load of them were clearly put together months ago. Any good new preview shows recorded this week? And what about the nostalgia fests? Someone must be doing the Euro 2000 retrospective surely, bleating on about the Dutch missing all the penalties and the Spain v Yugoslavia game?
Running of out of days to listen to all the previews but please point me towards nice things.

We aren't many years away from calling someone up that was born in the Steve McClaren era. Yikes.

Arkadiusz Milik injured and hasn't been replaced. Not sure if this has been posted in another thread. Quite a big loss for them.

More respect for our World Cup semi finalist, 3rd best in Europe manager please.
I love Gareth tbf. When it gets to a big tournament so much of it comes down to man management and getting the mood and the attitude right in the team camp. Compared to the squads of old it's a joy to watch these lads mucking about together and really enjoying being there. That can take us a long way. But let's not pretend Southgate is a master tactician. I mean we've had master tacticians before and look how badly they've done.

Would people prefer an out of form Sterling out wide, or a not properly used Grealish?
Pretty sure Southgate will serve up both of these, not sure you would need to choose.

I've got the horrible sinking feeling that with all the attacking flair players who can control a football in the side, that Southgate will just still stubbornly revert to type and it'll be woefully out of form Sterling and Rashford out on the wings to run in behind and it will all be very one-dimensional. When they should be about England's 6th and 7th choice wingers right now.
I mean all of this is a nailed on certainty surely?
Foden getting five minutes at the end when we've failed to create anything, then later the camera pans to Grealish sat in the stands with his bib still on.

England penalties:
Beckham and Vassell missed in 2004. Beckham had already missed one against France in the group game and missed one in the final qualifier against Turkey in Istanbul the previous autumn so he wasn’t on a great run. Although the pitch was cutting up so badly that his standing foot gave way underneath him. The later kickers could hardly get the ball to stay on the spot, no idea why they didn’t move them down the other end.
Lampard, Gerrard and Carragher all missed in 2006. Carragher came on right near the end specifically to take a penalty, then smashed one in before the referee was ready, then had to take it again and missed Absolute shambles.
