8/10 for me, wider political issues aside.
10/10 for the drama of the matches themselves, but lost out a bit for the poor atmosphere at many of the games, which really came across flat except for games with African, South American or Middle Eastern teams.

No clue what France have done in ET. All the momentum coming in and Argentina have been the side going for it.
yeah, same as the Dutch

Christ. Turned over to ITV for McCoist, heard Matterface waffling about the greatest story ever told, switched back to BBC

Feels like Argentina should be on 6-8 bookings, they've actually had 2

I think it's very soft, but if you give the pen why isn't it a red? no intention to play the ball, denial of goalscoring opportunity surely?

As someone once said, you have to say that's magnificent

Fair enough. I must've mis-heard the commentators, I'm sure they said prior to KO if he scored today he'd be the first. Maybe it was the first since Jairzinho, not sure.
Maybe the first since the round of 16 was added, 1970 went straight to QF from groups

I think that makes Messi the first man to score at every stage of a WC? How many of them are pens?
Jairzinho scored in every game for Brazil in 1970

Did Pougatch really just ask if Messi is on a different level to Gary Neville??!?!?!?!?
I've always thought Pougatch was an insufferably smug arse who likes the sound of his own voice far too much and doesn't know half as much about football as he thinks he does, but he really has taken his game to a whole new level lately

interesting how divisive this is.
FWIW I'm totally in the not a pen camp. I also don't think it should be a foul when a player knocks it past a defender and runs into them when they hold their space.

Hope the ref has the nerve to book one of the Portuguese for diving in the second half. Would mega kick off.

If it finishes 0-0 you owe all of us a share of that money.
I've paid for that goal instead

Just put a small bet on 0-0 at 7/1 to ensure that either I get *some* modicum of excitement, or get paid for my time

also "I apologise to the public", nowhere does he personalise his apology to the individual.

So bored I’m doing anagrams with the team letters on screen.
”MAR-ESP” = SPERM for 5
Thought I'd made an anagram but ended up with a SPARE M

England and France were given 6 days before their QFs while Brazil and Croatia will have only 4 days.
does that really matter given England play France and Brazil play Croatia? more concerning if teams playing each other had differing rest periods, which won't happen until the final (well third place match if you want to be picky)

I thought it was marginally off tbh but happy to see it allowed. Croatia have been awful and Japan deserve it.

Where has this Poland team been hiding in the first 3 games?

out of interest I looked at the bookies odds for each of the favourites to go through (from oddschecker)
in order of most favoured to most likely to be an upset:
Argentina 1/9; Brazil 1/8; France 1/7; England and Spain both 3/11; Portugal 10/21; Netherlands 1/2; Croatia 5/9
if we assumed these odds were broadly accurate, but factor them down a little bit for the bookies over-round (usually c.10%), says we should expect on average about 6 of the favourites to go through.

Is it me, or has this World Cup group stage been one of the best ever?
I was just thinking that, best I can remember, but then as the years go by my memory of group stages tends to dwindle to remembering the odd match or odd moment here and there

absolute disgrace at the end there with the Uruguay players at the officials. FIFA need better security around the officials at the end I think.

ooh. Assuming the next WC does go ahead with 3 team groups, I'm really going to miss double headers ending the group. They add so much drama.

yeah I agree. If I was the ref, when he did it the first time I would have actually made him go and get the ball and replace it on the spot. That would have made him look the fool and his housery would potentially have backfired.
