How are you all approaching the challenge tactic wise in the first season or two? Feeling like I need to crowd source some approaches / tactics after that depressing affair....
(PMs open if you prefer that, if your willing to help )I agree a tactic is required that will bridge the attribute gap as you will always have one of, if not the worst team in your division.
Annoyingly finally worked mine out last night, just before the full release Match Engine update which will no doubt 'nerf' it.

Perfected my beta tactic last night, will be a short lived triumph, back to drawing board with the full release Match Engine.

STALYBRIDGE CELTIC
Season 1 = National League North
Season 2 = National League North
Season 3 = National League North
Season 3
Certainly a much higher points return than season 2, we hit but could not retain a playoff position, whilst I feel we should be able to bridge the points differential to the play-offs over the next season or 2, securing 90 points to win the league is well out of reach.
Our intake 2 midfielders are progressing nicely and combined with our intake 1 striker remain our best hope of improvement, but essentially the players we started the save with 3 years ago are still our best by some margin in most cases. Still there is talent and always hope that collectively our youngsters can bridge that gap given time.
There isn't much of a sense of progress at the moment.
Hope
I need these 2 to kick on.
Intake 3
This was ultimately a disappointment with no one forcing their way into my first team plans yet. Still, we our filling out the under 18’s and under 23’s nicely and have strength in numbers to call on should we lose players to injury, or worse lose them to other teams.
Season 4 preview
I’d like the play off’s. More hope than expectation. Seeking further improvements from my young first team players. I’d like a good Goal Keeper and Central Attacking Midfielder in my intake. I'm not settled on a tactic yet, but a Match Engine change is due on full release anyway.

Not sure what's happening then, I had plenty of clubs sniffing around for my services, so clearly it's not an universal issue. I can only assume that it either has something to do with how expensive your contract would be to buy out or you being so successful that most clubs simply won't bother trying to approach you assuming you're not interested in managing them anyway.
Have you tried applying for manager vacancies through the job centre? (Would make a save before that, as it can really **** off your board) Just as a test to see how the AI reacts. If they reject your application it should at least give you a reason as to why they did, which could point you towards the actual issue.
After 3 average seasons in National League North, i'm consistently getting interview offers with League 2 clubs. If anything, those are unrealistically good offers.

Season 2
Season 2 wasn’t much different than Season 1. I was messing with tactics which didn’t help, until I settled on a diamond formation in January. We flirted with the relegation zone without me feeling panicked at any point as the 4 teams below us were picking up very few points.
Getting through a couple of FA Cup rounds helped the finances, this included knocking out National League Oldham.
My intake 1 Striker Harry Roscoe soon become first choice, he had a decent season but only improved modestly and his determination is still a problem. My Centre Back Bjork also played a lot, has improved but is still only my 4th best centre back and doesn’t improve the 1st team.
I dished out a fair few caps to my 1st intake, but very few are making any real progress. I guess our facilities are just too poor. We managed top raise Youth Recruitment from basic to fairly basic.
Intake 2
The only hope is intake 2, they are of a higher standard than intake 1 with much better personalities. We have a couple of very promising central midfielders who, whilst not strengthening the 1st team at the moment, do not weaken it. I can offload a couple of higher paid players and hopefully make enough of a profit to start upgrading either facilities or Junior Couching/Youth Recruitment.
Nice passers for this level.
Season 3 preview
Not overly optimistic but aiming for top half, outside chance of play offs largely on the back of a settled tactic & formation. Again targeting good cup runs to raise finances to start improving our off-field situation which should in turn lead better intakes and quicker development of players.

ABSQUE LABORE NIHIL
WITHOUT WORK, NOTHING
Introducing the mighty Stalybridge Celtic. Whilst their origin myth is somewhat murky they were definitely knocking a ball around by 1909. Despite their 110+ year history they have even less honours, medals and decorations than the Italian Army. Their annals record a number of seasons in the conference as the high watermark of their sporting excellence.
The class of 2022 have taken the first tentative steps towards righting that wrong with a workman like squad devoid of any talent somehow dragging themselves into the Conference North. Whilst they may lack talent, we have enough warm bodies to put out a team and a full bench…..that’ll do for me.
The facilities however are threadbare, the finances precarious, offering little prospect of making the improvements required to start producing potential football league prospects, however there is always hope that against all odds someone will make it your academy who can make a difference.
The plan then is to establish ourselves in the National League North for a season or 2, keeping hold of the players we have, squeezing every little bit of talent out of them we can, hopefully complimented by a couple of good prospects that will see us scrape through the play offs at some point and then rinse and repeat in the conference proper.
I anticipate the non league years to be long and hard, its only when League 2 status is attained and secured that a financial surplus can be put to good use allowing an acceleration of the challenge.
Season 1
My aggressive kick & rush 433 saw us open up with back to back 4-1 victories to set us on our way. Whilst results soon dropped off we always had a punchers chance and were able to keep picking up points to remain in mid table. We even flirted with a play-off spot never quite getting there until a dip in late season form saw us drop to mid-table. Overall, satisfied with our performance.
Intake 1
Despite the preview advising of only 1 decent Centre Back and 1 decent Striker (B rated), we ended up with a healthy intake of 9, five star talents. However, personalities were generally poor, I got rid of 2 unambitious personalities immediately (they are a lost cause in my eyes), leaving me with 4 showing low determination, disappointing but we can at least mentor these, and 3 with decent personalities.
All in all, pretty happy with this with the potential to improve our 1st team towards the back end of next season if they respond well to game time.
I immediately promoted 3 to the 1st team and gave them debuts, detailed below.
Season 2 preview
I will ensure my prospects get good game time so they have an opportunity to develop. I’ll keep a close eye on those in the under 18’s to see if any start to improve rapidly. Income from Cup runs is the difference between profit and loss at this level, so that will also be a focus.

I know this isn't technically about a new laptop, but I'm looking for some advice/help. The game rates my 3D capability at 5 star but I get a lot of lag and framerate slowdown when watching the matches (dropping to like 1-2fps for a few seconds multiple times during games). I've tried dropping the quality from high to medium and even locked the framerate at 30fps, which helped but didn't cure the issue. I've updated my drivers to the latest version but that didn't fix it either.
Do you reckon the graphics card is the issue here or is the cpu too old?
i5-7300HQ (2.50GHz)
16GB RAM (2400MHz)
GeForce GTX 1050
FM is installed on an 500GB SSD
I have the same specs but a TI version of the 1050.
I get between 48-56 fps on high settings. Not enough to match the refresh rate of the screen so its not smooth but doesn't bother me.
That CPU is showing its age but can still do a job as along as you don't load too many leagues.

The lowest tier in Norway is view-only by default. But the 3rd tier should be manageble.
Ok, so i can take a 3rd tier Norwegian team (div 2) and still qualify for this challenge?

Help.
I've holidayed to the end of the norwegian season, identified a club promoted from 4th division to 3rd, gone to take control but the 3rd division is greyed out.
Any ideas why?

It's quite tricky just comparing spec vs spec in terms of CPU & GPU.
For me at least there are a couple of massive quality of life considerations, namely fan noise and screen quality.
I'd trade a performance tier in both CPU & GPU power for a quiet laptop with a good screen.
I'd advise any one to diligently research every laptop before purchase....or just send them back like i do

6 Outfield players on attack duty, no defensive role in a 2 man midfield which would also see your ball winning midfielder leave his position to close down SHOULD see you getting spanked by any decent team. 4 attacking players congesting the centre of the pitch should also be less than optimal although clearly AI teams cannot handle central overloads.
It extremely lame that we are here after 20 iterations of the game. Fingers crossed there is more challenge after full release, it is only the beta.

I usually load England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Ireland. Makes it a bit more fun where players go, since they rarely leave the British Isles anyway.
Sounds like a plan. Thanks guys.

Greetings,
I've been putting this off, but I think i'm going to have to jump in this year.
How many leagues do people typically load for a save in England? My laptop is ancient so i'm conscious of things grinding to a halt 20 seasons in.
Thanks

Ok,
Final patch is out.
Tactics on my previous thread were a bit scratchy after recent updates, performing decently enough but without the satisfying level of over performance I need to really enjoy my save.
I had been going along nicely with a back 3 and wingbacks, but I just couldn’t get the goal return I wanted. Looking for an average of over 3 goals a game with Liverpool without being leaky at the back.
442 has been potent for goalscoring this year but only having 2 midfielders meant you tended to be too weak defensively to use this week in, week out as a plug and play tactic. However, I wanted to set a goalscoring benchmark to see what we could do, I was aware that using Inverted Wingbacks plugged the holes in midfield so I went IWB/S and Winger/A. 92 points, 136 goals score and 37 conceded. Not bad, but not good enough for Liverpool.
However, I’d set a goalscoring benchmark to work towards. Before moving on from the 442, I thought I’d try flipping the duties, put the Wingers on Support, Inverted Wingbacks on Attack. I didn’t think it would work, the IWB would not help out defensively enough, the Wingers would not contribute to attacks enough.
What do I know? 102 points, 122 goals only 23 conceded. Salah 64 goals all competitions. And an unbeaten season to boot.
Ok, how about a poor team. Was pretty sure Attacking Mentality and a 442 with relegation candidates would be too much, step up Fulham.
Not bad at all. Well clear of relegation, albeit in the Leeds mould of hammering teams then getting hammered in turn. All in, 53 points, 2 goals a game both for and against. Improving Fulham would be easy, the more you improve them the more goals you score and the less you concede and that goal difference starts to open up and you move up the league. A workable tactic for sure.
The football on display in varied and entertaining. A good number of through balls for your strikers to run onto combined with some precise wing play. This is not a ‘blood & thunder’ 442 with flying wingers, its more considered with nice lateral play across the box.
Full Backs take corners & throw ins.

Left the throw in routine the same, just changed distribution to short.

What is Your opinion about new 4132 tactic under new patch? I got slightly worst results than before but it could be just randomness of the game, not sure now to continue my save or wait for Your update.
More points, less goals.
its playing out fine, but i'd like the goals back.
Working until Sunday but will tweak then. I ran this test a few times and the Goal Difference was usually 70 plus.

Looks like the final update has been released. Says that long throws have been tweaked so the throw in the original tactic could be less effective. I am yet to update as I am almost at the end of my first season with AFC Fylde and top of the table. Will probably update once the season is finished and then hopefully the original tactic will still be good.
Wasn't expecting another ME update.
Will put on a short throw-in routine and re-run the test.

OK,
As promised the 4132 i'm currently using.
Any half decent tactic can get low 90's points with Liverpool but goal difference is typically around plus 70.
Managed to squeeze a bit more out of it here.
Probably not worth a new thread, will see how it goes.
