2023: Transfer news

As I already mentioned earlier, Botheim leaves for Fluminense. Apart from him, We sell Amundsen, who didn't have the quality to compete for a first team place, to Arouca for 375k and let Moberg finish his career in Spain where he joins Gijon for 725k. Finally, Koomson and Hauge go out on loan to get some game time.

On the incoming side, we only sign two players. The biggest name is Odin Bjorntuft, a 24-year old versatile centre back who can also play in the midfield if needed. He joins us from Odd for 2.1M. Secondly, we finally find some cover for the right back position by bringing Dawid Bugaj back to Norway. Dawid is an 18-year old Norwegian with Polish roots who moved from Molde to SPAL in Italy at a very young age. I'm hoping I can develop him into a first choice right back.

Important fact is that both players are homegrown, which will have to be something I take into account when managing transfer deals as the limit for foreign players is fairly low (only nine allowed).

2023: Youth intake

I had a lot of A's in the youth intake preview but I'm not entirely convinced by the quality of the players coming through. We do have a great goalkeeper prospect again, but I didn't really need him as Quick is coming up fairly well. Apart from that, there are two midfield players who look like they could reach the first team one day.

Bjorntuft, looks decent

He does, doesn't he? He's had a very stable two seasons at Odd as well, despite them not performing well in the league, which to me says a lot. I needed someone to provide some competition for Lode too because he made a lot of costly mistakes last year (which is part of the reason why we didn't secure the title, apart from the goal scoring issues).

Yeah, I wonder if it has something to do with the JPP stat of the HOYD. Either way, I'm not complaining, the kids are progressing quite nicely so it should be possible to rely mostly on domestic transfers and promoting from within. :)

Araujo is drumming up a LOT of interest, and they're no small teams. Not sure if we'll be able to hang onto him for much longer. Seeing Benfica in the list is ironic since they sold him to me for peanuts.

Safe for now. ;) They lowballed me again with an offer up to 2.6M. Not the first time that happens, Botheim was unsettled in the same way. I'm afraid club and league reputation play a big role.

2023: A world of difference

We're halfway through the season, and what a season it is. Oddly enough, we haven't really changed much from a  tactical point of view, but the results on the pitch have been nothing short of sheer magic.

We actually started on a false note, losing the Super Cup against Rosenborg with the smallest of differences but even in that game, we were the better team. But after that... I'll let the results speak for themselves.

Spoiler

20220102182611_1.thumb.jpg.98ce6ee85bc51925b7ba8a86c1a4100f.jpg

Clean sheets in eleven games, and a total goal tally of 42. The gap with Rosenborg is already eleven points so it looks virtually impossible to let the title slip away this time. The only bad news is that Levi's contract runs out in December and he doesn't want to sign a new deal. But we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

The cup's also been great so far, with the chance to introduce some youngsters to first time football. Young striker Sumstad is actually our cup top goalscorer with four roses, and midfield prospect Tafjord also scored his first professional goal.

Such a shame! very low offer too!

Aye, but it's all relative. It's a club and a country record, apparently. Although it looks like Molde might break it already as they received a 12.75M offer for Mannsverk.

Either way, I think we've already found a replacement. Not as good, but it's close.

Transfer news

After the (forced) sale of Araujo, we went on the transfer market with quite a budget. To strengthen the team, I signed four players, one of which will see out the rest of the season at his former club on loan

The first one up is the direct replacement of Araujo. Nicolas Pignatel Jenssen is 21 years old and could evolve into a very good ball playing defender. He moved to Roma in the summer of 2021 but only managed to get three appearances for the first team there. His transfer price was rather steep with 4.8M but if he realises his potential, he'll very much be worth every penny.

Spoiler

To be on the safe side, we brought in a second central defender. Aiham Ousou is a Swede with Syrian background who comes across from Slavia Prague for 3M after spending two seasons with the Czechs. Aiham can also provide cover for the right back position if necessary, which is a big plus.

Spoiler

For our third signing, we stay in Scandinavia. With Mohanad Jeahze, we sign another Swede with Mid Eastern background, this time Iraqi. He was transfer listed for 500k and will provide much needed cover on the left for Bjorkan.

Spoiler

For our last player, we shop in Denmark. Tochi Chukwuani joins us from Nordsjaelland for 400k but stays on loan until the end of the season.

What is your scouting set up is like?

I usually let either my chief scout or my DoF handle the scouting assignments. Might look more closely into it in the future as there's a lack of domestic scouting right now (which I need because of the 9 foreign player limit). Three of the four signed players have been on my shortlist for a while, I like to keep a shadow squad ready in case someone leaves.

Cheers! Quick's been doing great, I play him in all cup games and some of the easier European games. He also futured a few games in the league when Rönning was out with injury. Fairly sure he'll be first choice in one or two years.

2023: Progress

Eliteserien

Halfway through the season, we were sitting comfortably on top, having been unbeaten except for one off game.

The start of the return series was slightly more mixed as we lost away in Valerenga and drew 0-0 at Viking in the first five games. But after the loss in Valerenga, we actually went unbeaten for the remainder of the year, highlights being a 3-1 win away at Rosenborg and a 5-2 trashing in Bergen.

I think the final league table says it all. We've improved from our first title win two years ago in all aspects. Seven more points, 17 more goals scored and 5 less conceded. Even the loss of Araujo during the summer didn't hurt us as much as I thought it would.

Cup

An easy run to the final with a great away win over Odd in the semis. But we paid the penalty against Rosenborg, both teams getting a perfect track record until Bjorkan missed the sixth.

Players of the season

Levi's by far the best performer this year. Unfortunately, he didn't want to renew his contract and he signed a deal at Lyon, joining them in January. He got 22 goals and 20 assists in 39 games from the right wing. I've been looking for a replacement, but it's not going to be easy. There is someone who I might promote from within to a starter place though.

Spoiler

Apart from Levi, Boniface did very well leading the line. He also almost moved during the summer window but I managed to intervene when the board accepted an offer.

Upcoming youngsters

Quite a few young players have improved really, really well over the last year. Quick has been getting a lot of game time, in part because of small injuries for Rönning and it's sped up his development significantly. Up front, Jovic is looking better and better and Keita also developed into a really versatile midfielder.

2023: Storming Europe...ish

Apparently, we don't have a spot in the Europa League so finish in second place last year convicted us to the Loser League Euro Cup II instead. Just like the Champions League, we get to play a whole lot of preliminary rounds first, one less than usual though. The first two rounds were easy, we comfortably beat FC Inter (8-0 aggregate) and Aberdeen (5-2 aggregate). In the final playoff round, we faced Basel and almost went out but miraculously survived. We first rescued a draw after being 0-2 behind at home and then went on to win 3-2 after again being two goals down in Switzerland.

The reward? Good money and a group with Atalanta, Sheriff Tiraspol and Javor. We opened at Home against the Italian giant and when we edged that game 2-0, we were set for a great campaign. We walzed over the two other teams without conceding a single goal, giving us a three point margin with one game to go, in Italy.

And as is our custom, we went 2-0 behind again only to rescue a very credible draw right at the end, winning the group with 16 points and only two goals conceded.

2024: Transfer news

This may be the shortest post I've ever done. No incomings, five youngsters out on loan, that's it. I haven't been able to procure a suitable replacement for Levi so Mvuka will have to fill his boots and I'll promote someone from the U19 for rotation purposes.

There may be a big signing coming up though, stay tuned!

2024: Transfer news

We were a bit short in central midfield and as we're lacking rotation options from the youth side, we went hunting and (hopefully) found two players that will lead us to further glory in due time. More importantly, we still have two available slots for non-homegrown players so they won't cause registration issues.

The first one was more of an opportunity. Biasoli came up in the scout reports as an end of contract player and we took a gamble to jump in quickly as there was a fair amount of interest from other clubs in Europe. I believe he'll start in August as a rotation option and depending on his progress, may fairly quickly cement a first team place.

The other player we sign is of a different calibre. Yûya Hirakawa is a versatile Japanese midfielder with some amazing attacking qualities. He had a release clause of 3.1M, which just about fit in our budget and his wage demands were also close, but we managed to work out a deal. I'm also considering retraining him to the right wing as a replacement for Levi.

2023-2024: God bless the Loser Cup Euro Cup II

Thanks to our group win, we went straight to the second knockout round of the Euro Cup II, where lady luck shone on us and gave us a very credible draw against Scottish side Hearts. A 0-3 away win pretty much sealed qualification for the quarter final, and the home return saw youngster Bredo Olsen score a goal on his debut in a 2-2 draw.

We drew French tradition club Olympique Marseille and when we lost our home game 0-1 (despite being as least their equal), I thought we were done for. But 'lo and behold, miracles happen! After a nervous start we completely steamrolled them, running out 0-3 at Stade Vélodrome, with Collado putting the final 1-3 scoreline on the board in the 94th minute.

Against Mönchengladbach our great form continued when we beat the Germans in their own ground 0-1 as they missed an early penalty and Boniface netted the only goal of the game in the 77th. The return was the great Mvuka show who netted a hattrick. Final score: 3-1, and we're on to the final.

In that final, we will meet... Atalanta, the team we kept behind us in the group stage. Can we write history?

About youth and youngsters

Three years in, it may be time to take a long recap on how the squad is developing and how our young kids are doing. Bodo have a bit of a reputation when bringing players through from their own academy. Patrick Berg, Ulrik Saltnes and Fredrik Bjorkan are all leading first team players in 2021, and Jens Petter Hauge moved to Milan in 2021 for a record fee of 5M.

This is reflected in the club vision, which desires a manager to develop players using the academy. It helps that all facilities and other factors are at a very high level right from the start, and can be easily improved.

As I always try to do, I've done my best to continue this tradition, both by bringing up youngsters through the youth ranks and signing promising ones both from Norway and abroad at a very young age. It's also reflected by the fact that we have the youngest average squad in the league at 22,7 years.

Quite a few young players have made it to the first team already, either from the academy (like Quick and Olsen, or Fjaerli) or brought in at a young age from other clubs (Barbati, Bugaj, Jovic, Mvuka, Keita). An overview!

Quick is currently the brightest academy diamond, who will possibly even outshine the best player to ever come from the youth ranks, Hauge. He's been rotating with Rönning but has come to a point where he's already very close to matching the latter's ability, and that at only 17 years of age.

Olsen was promoted to the first team when Levi left to provide rotation options and get some first team experience as his progress was a bit lacking. He has done surprisingly well so far and the first team opportunities have kickstarted his progress as well. I'm a bit worried about his personality though.

Fjaerli, finally, was also brought up as a rotation option and has been getting game time in the cup. An unpolished diamond, for sure.

Barbati has been surprisingly solid. He joined us from Stromsgodset in 2022 and has gradually broken into the first team, recently scoring his first professional goal. At only 19 years of age, he's got plenty of time to improve and, being in a mentoring group with Keita, Berg and Saltnes, I'm hoping his personality will become better as well.

Bugaj has been nothing short of amazing. We brought him back to Norway in 2023 and the way he's developed is really impressive. He's not first choice on the right back and although he's been making some noise about moving abroad, I'm hoping to hang onto him for a while longer. Quite possibly the most versatile player in the squad in terms of attributes.

Jovic is, to date, still our most expensive signing ever. We picked him up in 2022 thanks to our CL prize money for a hefty sum of 6.75M. He had a very disappointing first season, getting nothing but bad ratings but then all of a sudden exploded in 2023. He'll probably become a record outgoing transfer at some point in the future (either him or Boniface) when Olsen is ready to permanently take his place.

Mvuka was already at the club, having joined from Asane in 2021. It took a lot of time to turn him into the player he is today but I'm glad I didn't give up on him. He still has games where he completely disappears (probably due to his determination and bravery) but apart from that I have no complaints about him.

And finally, my real life favourite: Mandela Keita. We signed him from Oud-Heverlee Leuven in 2021 and turned him into a fairly complete midfielder. His only weakness is his natural fitness, which means we have to be very careful with how much he plays. Other than that, he's the perfect roaming playmaker for us.

Quick and Olsen look fantastic!

As does Keita. Does he have Senegalese nationality too?

He's actually part Guinean and currently (both IRL and in game) capped for the Belgian U21.

Fjaerli, looks a top young player!

Aye, he needs to improve on his performances but I think he has the potential to become a very good playmaker in the future!

Transfer news

Victor Edvardsen really wanted to leave and with only six months remaining on his contract, I couldn't pass up on the 3.9M Feyenoord offered for him. We spent the money well, bringing in a young Danish striker with Chinese roots from Velje, who already looks very promising for his age.

Bugaj wants to leave but as he's not too influential and has a contract until December 2027, he's not going anywhere as far as I'm concerned.

In other news, we easily reached the group stage of the Champions League after beating Mura (4-1), Ferencvaros (7-0) and Shaktar (3-0).

Wow, what a easy way route to get to group stage ;)

I was a bit worried about Shaktar with players like Van de Beek, Dodo, Lo Celso, Praet, Berghuis, Malen,... but we were coming in on a high of form, which definitely helped!

Zhang looks great! Seems like you're doing a great job of picking up all the young Scandinavian talent.

Fairly sure I'm still missing out on quite a few but I've got no complaints about my scouting team so far. :D
