Season 2013/14 Preview

Nacional B

The aim was simple, get the club promoted instantly and restore pride to El Rojo after the embarrassment of relegation from the top flight of Argentine football for the first time in their history.

The execution? Well that would be more challenging; a 22 team division, 42 games and a whole host of games in 'backwater' cities and stadiums that the club hasn't seen.

Squad wise there was enough about the club to not need an overhaul, infact we made no signings throughout the season and instead relied upon the clubs youth system to call up a host of talent (including but not limited to) Nestor Breitenbruch (DC), Lucas Villalba (DL), Francisco Pizzini (ST) and the Del Castillo brothers Gaston (AMC) and Mauricio (AMC). These moves allowed me to move on some of our more experienced players in order to bring down the wage bill and get cash flowing through the club, given the mammoth $50m plus debt we have to service.

Season 2013/14 (Part 1)

Nacional B

We opened the season with a bang winning our opening 5 games including a 6-0 romp vs Atl. Tucuman, followed up by whipping Douglas Haig 4-0. Pizzini instantly becoming a fans favourite netting 5 times in these games, whilst Fabian Monserrat grew into his role and added 4 goals.

5wins_zps46cc077f.png

Things then took a turn for the worse, 2 wins from 8 games prevented us making any gains from our quick start. However with only 1 loss in those 8 (coming against Union, 2-3) we still look strong and capable of getting back onto a winning run. Daniel Montenegro would roll back the years in this spell, scoring 5 goals, including a double as we rolled over Banfield 4-0 in a rare highlight.

Season 2013/14 (Part 2)

Nacional B

A top of the table clash with Boca Unidos proved to be easier than expected as we clattered them 3-0, then the draw 'bug' caught hold of us again as a 3-3 thriller with Alte. Brown (the highlight being a Pizzini Hat-Trick) and a 1-1 grind against Villa San Carlos slowed us down.

However with the mid-season break approaching, we raced toward a well earned rest, winning all 3 games as Pizzini would break double figures for the season, with a double in our 3-1 win against Aldosivi. This win would ensure we sat top of the table going into the break, having lost just 1 of our opening 19 games.

The break saw us line up friendlies against Sao Paulo and Velez, which we drew both, however the real action would start again in February and the race to the finish line would begin.

Season 2013/14 (Part 3)

Nacional B

I'd hoped that we would return fresh and ready to stamp our authority on the league, however our first game back from the break saw us go down 2-1 to Sporting Belgrano as we looked a little disinterested. A crack of the whip however would soon shake the cobwebs off the players and a run of 6 straight wins left us in a commanding position at the top of the table, as Montenegro led via his experience to get the youngsters back on track.

Pizzini would continue to impress, notching a further 6 goals during the run, however it was Full Back Vilalba and Winger Monserrat who started to grab the headlines as interest from both France and Holland started to become known. However our earlier dealings in the transfer market had helped stabalise our financial position and not only did we resist offers, but also tied both players down into 4 year deals in order to maximise future sale price.

Unfortunately our winning streak came to an end when 2nd place Instituto pulled off a 2-1 win, then our Cup hopes instantly diminshed as we somehow lost to Defensa y Justica in the 5th round.

Best of luck with Independiente :D They're now a mid-table Premier Division side in my save, and how dare you defeat my beloved Atl. Tucuman 6-0 :O

Thanks, and thanks for reading :)

I have hopes of regaining El Rojo's former glories.... and apologies for the 6-0 beating, we only scored 3 the second time round ;)

Season 2013/14 (Part 4)

Nacional B

We entered the run in 'in good position, top of the league and more importantly 14 points clear of 4th place. That gap allowed us to play with more freedom and rather than being a tense finish, we managed to blitz the division and walk to the title, with records points and goals tallies.

Infact we would lose just one of our remaining games, the final fixture at home to Independiente Rivadavia as we needed just 1 goal to hit the 100 mark, only to slump to a 1-0 defeat infront of an almost packed stadium.

Outside of that though we can point to a 5-1 win over Sarmiento (J), a run of games for Mauricio Del Castillo in place of the injured Pizzini, that saw him score 5 goals toward the end of the campaign and importantly the clinching of the title with 6 games to go and the all important instant promotion back into the Primera Division for next season.

Pizzini would wind up the clubs leading scorer with 23 goals to firmly cement a place in the fans hearts, whilst old servant Daniel Montenegro rolled back the years to trigger a 1 year contract extension (despite heavy interest from Europe) to score 15 goals as he featured in every game of the campaign.

Nice story :)

Is Juan Sebastian Veron still in the game?

Can you somehow sign him (be it as a player or coach) ?

Thanks for checking in... unfortunately I cant find Veron in the database... which is strange, I have over 80,000 players loaded!

Season 2014/15 Preview

Pre-Season

Primera Division

Back in the big time at the first time of asking was achieved with a core of youngsters bought up via the clubs youth system. Success in the top flight would probably be a stretch too far for them at this stage, however we decided against a major overhaul in players and instead looked once again into the pool of talent at the club already.

16 year old Miguel Angel Cecchini would be the most prominent call up as he earned the starting role as our Defensive Midfielder. Villagra returned from a loan spell to become our Right Back, whilst Ivan Perez and Juan Manuel Trejo also returned to become a part of our Midfield rotation.

Our solitary addition came in the form of German Pacheco, a 23 year old wide left player who has been pretty much a journeyman in his short career, including an 11 game stint at El Rojo on loan in 2010/11.

As backup we still had a transfer kitty of $8m and nearly $20k per week in our wage budget, however with the training facility upgrade nearing completion, my main aim was to put in place one of the best structures in South America to develop talent and reap the rewards.

Season 2014/15 (Part One)

Primera Divison : Torneo Inicial

Our season would open with a bang, expectations were not high, but we scored 6 an edged out Gimnasia (LP) 6-4 away from home to start our return to the top tier with a win. Infact we collected 7pts from 9 and sat on top of the table as Pizzini got straight into stride, scoring twice in the opening set.

Things then came down to earth with a bump, as back to back home defeats sandwiched a 2-0 win at All Boys. However those home defeats saw us lose 3-1 to Velez Sarsfield and River Plate respectively. It bought home how difficult the division will be with the biggerclubs being more stable than us at this stage.

op614_zps0114589a.png

We then got back to form salvaging a point in a 3-3 thriller at Huracan, with Pizzini scoring a brace, before beating last season's Nacional B rivals Insituto 3-2, this time Pacheco would find the net twice. However these results would have meant little going into our home game vs Racing Club and the 'clásico de Avellaneda, Argentina's 2nd biggest rivalry.

A chance to get one back over our old foe, following the humiliation of having to miss out on these occasions due to relegation. A sellout as predicted stoked up the atmosphere and when Pizzini put us infront, im sure the whole of the country shook with the celebrations. Pacheco would add a 2nd before half time and at 2 up, we looked to be running riot. However Racing would pull one back early in the 2nd half and then add pressure to force an equaliser, yet we stood firm and earned a thoroughly deserved win.

Season 2014/15 (Part Two)

Primera Division : Torneo Inicial

The run in would begin here, placed in 3rd we looked good to finish well but with a fair few tough games ahead, it wouldnt be easy. First up after Racing we beat Godoy Cruz 3-0 pretty comfortably. Then a pair of defeats, first at Estudiantes (LP) and then 1-0 at home to Boca Juniors.

We would then go on to lose 2 more of our next 3 as our slump pushed us into mid table, as consecutive away defeats at San Lorenzo (5-1) and Olimpo (3-0) highlighted our frailties more than ever. Our only win came as we beat Newell's Old Boys 2-1 thanks to a very late Montenegro penalty.

loss6_zpsd8dde0a2.png

There was just 4 games left and with the table relatively close, a few good results could still see us finish the stage strong. Alas our 2 remaining home games yielded just 1 point, in a goalless draw against bottom placed Lanus, whilst Tigre stunned us 2-1. We had to win our remaining pair of games away from home.

We would start out by taking apart Quilmes 4-2, with Pizzini and Pacheco showing their worth. Then with results going our way, we knew that a win at Colon, coupled with Arsenal de Sarandi loss and we would finish 5th. Pizzini and Pacheco again secured the points in a 2-1 win and with Arsenal losing, we would finish in a solid 5th place.

Season 2014/15 (Part Three)

Mid-Season Break

Election fever hit Independiente as a new President of the club was set to be announced as Javier Cantero was stepping down after overseeing one of if not the worst era in the clubs history.

elecfev_zps173186d1.png

Martin Jaime would win the elections and assured me that there would be no interference from him at this stage. Financially things remain stable and we are in no need to sell anyone at this stage of our development.

jaime_zpsa35c4c71.png

Finally some sad news comes as Daniel Montenegro has set a retirement date for the end of this campaign. Aged 35 his presence is seen as vital in the dressing room full of young upstarts embarking on their career. The hope is that Montenegro will sign a deal to keep him at the club in some capacity in the future.

Season 2014/15 (Part Four)

Primera Division : Torneo Finale

Prior to beginning the Torneo Finale phase of the Championship, we received good news from the board with regards to our Youth Facilities. We continue to use players from our academy and this upgrade should ensure better and more prepared players will be able to represent El Rojo in the future.

ythfacil_zps6bc96bd0.png

Alongside this, we also confirmed a free transfer signing of Chilean International Felipe Gallegos. Heavily recommended by our scouting team, he will add more depth to our wide positions in the coming season.

gallegos_zps63faa7ee.png

Back on the field and we would start the Finale stage pretty slowly, claiming home wins over Gimnasia (LP) and Belgrano, whilst then losing away to River and Arsenal de Sarandi. Then a 5 game undefeated run looked to put us in a favourable position, as a 4-2 home win over All Boys (started off by Goalkeeper 'Rodriguez's penalty strike) and then a surprise 2-0 win at Velez, via a Pizzini brace, left the fans dreaming.

However 3 straight draws stunted our surge and although we didnt lose, draws at home to Huracan and Godoy Cruz were definately points dropped rather than gained. Finally as we reached the halfway point of the Finale stage, the unthinkable happened as we arrived at Racing for the 2nd 'clásico de Avellaneda, only to lose in the 83rd minute and face the wrath of our fans afterward.

Season 2014/15 (Part Five)

Primera Division : Torneo Finale

An injury crisis started to become the focal point of our season as the run in came round, notably Pizzini would miss at least 1 month, whilst the defence appeared to change faces nearly every game. The exciting part came in our rebound game from the derby day defeat.

At home to Estudiantes as without Pizzini we gambled on young starlet Javier Cejas to fill his boots at just 16. Unbelievably Cejas would become an instant hero, scoring twice inside 15 minutes and helping us to rattle the Torneo Inicial Champions 4-1.

cejasgol_zpscfc207b5.png

Sadly that result stood out, as although we managed to drew at both Boca and then Newells, we had lost the game in between 4-1 to San Lorenzo and then back to back losses saw us slip out of the Copa Argentina 3-1 to Quilmes, before Olimpo collected all 3 pts with a 1-0 win.

Our run in required us to win all our remaining games and hope other teams around us slipped up in order to match the Inicial performance of 5th place. We did start well, 4 goals in wins against Lanus and Quilmes put us in good stead as Pizzini returned from injury to score 3 goals.

Then as things looked bright, we lost 1-0 at Tigre and basically consigned ourselves to a mid table finish. Our last game of the season was at home to Colon and the fans packed the house to say goodbye to Daniel Montenegro. Delightfully he would score our first goal, then Pizzini our 2nd. However as the game looked liked petering out to a 2-2 draw, Pacheco finished off a fine campaign with the winner to give us a 9th place finish.

2015/16 (Pre-Season)

Primera Division

We came into this season on the back of a relatively positive return to the top flight in Argentina. Our first season saw us claim 5th in the Inicial and then 9th in the Finale, respectable finishes and definitely a stepping stone for our young squad to build on.

Changes had to happen though as the loss of influential midfielder Daniel Montenegro left us with a huge role to fill, both on and off the field. Fortunately the right player was offered to us straight away as Dario Conca had just finished his lucrative contract in China and was looking to return home. Conca who had made a name for himself with Fluminense in Brazil, was happy to accept reduced terms in order to play in Argentina and his signing was confirmed in time for the start of the new campaign.

in1516_zpse0a2b043.png

We also added another player who wanted a return to familiar soil as Facundo Bertoglio finished up his uneasy spell in Ukraine to add more experience to the squad. However we did have to say goodbye to one of the finds of the season last year. German Pacheco who joined for a mere $70k was being linked to various clubs in Europe and as soon as Nantes came in with a $4m package, we had to allow Pacheco the chance to fulfill his dream of playing in Europe.

Season 2015/16 (Part One)

Primera Divison : Torneo Inicial

With our hopes raised a little with the addition of Conca and the added experience of the young crop of academy players, we hoped to start out with a bang. Alas that bang was on us, 3 straight defeats to open the season including a thumping 5-1 loss to Tigre made things a little tricky.

Our first win over Estudiantes (LP) saw Conca finally get on the scoresheet, however that was brief respite as 3 more losses in our next 4 games, again including a hammering this time from Olimpo 4-0, left us afoot the table and staring down a barrel.

We would then toss away a comfortable lead over San Lorenzo in a thirlling 4-4 draw in what could have really dented our confidence, however the team picked themselves up and although the goals kept flowing into our net, we found our scoring boots and managed 11 goals in 3 games to beat Newell's (3-1), Belgrano (5-2) and Godoy Cruz (3-1) to move into mid table.

Season 2015/16 (Part Two)

Primera Divison : Torneo Inicial

With the relative security that our mini winning streak bought, we headed to league leading Boca hoping to dent their hopes of winning the title. Unfortunately our defensive woes crept to the fore again and a 6-2 loss was not taken well by our fans, who proceeded to wreck our training facility for our return. 'hijos de puta' was the chant from the crowd gathered to hurl abuse at our return.

Not to be distracted we pieced together a decent run in, wins over Gimnasia (LP), Banfield and Quilmes ensured we would sit mid table, whilst a 1-1 home draw against Racing kept the fans just the right side of us, albeit ready to explode at our next miserable performance.

Pizzini again impressed with 9 goals in the Inicial, whilst Conca who started slowly, soon settled in and would score 6 times in our final 7 games to firmly implant himself into the fans hearts.

Season 2015/16 (Part Three)

Mid-Season Break

A quieter break for us this year without any elections to focus on. We decide to dip into the transfer market and although our main targets are not acquired due to hideous wage requests, we do sign a pair of 18 year old Chileans. Both come highly recommended and both returned straight to their native Chile on loan to Petrobras Primera side La Serena.

cjileans_zpse46d72ea.png

However we did have further outgoings, firstly Bertoglio who failed to hold down a place in the first team was getting restless and thus was allowed to leave on loan to Estudiantes (LP), who will cover his wages and give him some game time. More importantly was the loss of 2 players who joined Sparta Prague, as the Czech Giants made a double swoop to entice Ivan Perez and Felipe Gallegos to Europe.

We had hoped to keep at least one, but the deal was swiftly put through by the Agent in charge of both players and we would end up 2 players lighter, but just shy of $6m richer for the deal.

Season 2015/16 (Part Four)

Torneo Finale

Too young? Too soon? Probably, we have taken the choice to go down the academy route quite heavily this year and its taking its toll, as 16/17 year olds are being found out in the most simplest of ways.

Once again we start slow, a 3-1 loss to Velez is then compounded by a 2-1 home defeat to 9-man Tigre as the fans are staying away in their droves. A seemingly turnaround looks on the cards when we go to River Plate and win, thanks to Escobar and Miranda who. However its another false dawn, as a 3-1 loss to Estudiantes (LP) is followed by Colon ripping us a new one, in a 4-2 drubbing.

Back to back wins over Olimpo and Lanus at home spare us any immediate repercussions, however tough away games at San Lorenzo and then Newells Old Boys, leaves us with nothing but a 16th place and a long road back in the league table.

If anything... its time for this team to become 'Rey de Copas' once more!

Season 2015/16 (Part Five)

Torneo Finale

We headed into the 2nd half of the Torneo Finale with little to lose... relegation was not on the cards due to the Average Points system, so it was a case of get the team together, get them motivated and see what we could do.

First up was Arsenal de Sarandi and a return to form of Pizzini helped see us claim all 3pts with a 3-1 win. Then we backed that up with another win, as Belgrano came to us and fell to a solitary Monserrat strike.

Those results carried us through a tough game at Godoy Cruz as Pizzini and Monserrat would combine to ensure we continued our winning streak with a comfortable 3-0 win. Our Cup hopes kicked off in the 6th Round as we faced Nacional B side Aldovisi, and although they gave us an early scare, our 3-1 win was more 'easy' than it looks.

Up next though to test our winning run was league leading Boca... they had crushed us 6-2 in the Torneo Inicial, so with trepedation I feared the worst in front of 40,000 demanding home fans. I needn't have feared though, as Monserrat continued his impressive form that has seen him earn plaudits from Europe as we clinched a memorable 2-0 win.

Season 2015/16 (Part Six)

Torneo Finale

Our winning run had sparked hopes of a good finish to the season and a chance to push for a Continental place. Unforunately our 4 game winning streak in the league came to an end at relegation candidates Union, who snatched a late point after Monserrat had opened the scoring.

We soon got back on top though and a 1-0 win at home to high flying Gimnasia (LP) thanks to a Conca 'corker, pushed us into the top 10. Then as 16 year old Escobar banged in a brace to help us deny Banfield 3-1, it became clear that with the table as tight as a nuns corset, that we could match or better the 5th place we earned in last seasons Torneo Inicial.

The Avellaneda derby came next and after drawing at home, we seeked at least similar on the turf of our rival. Pizzini gave us the lead in the first half and although we shut down the hatches in the 2nd, it was only a matter of time before we caved and let them back in the tie. A 1-1 draw though helped consolidate our position and kept the fans at bay.

Once again our Mon'Pi (Monserrat/Pizzini) combination would dig us out of a hole at Atl. Rafaela, as we stretched our unbeaten run to 9 games. Then as things were going well, we fell back to earth in the Copa Argentina as a 2-2 draw with Estudiantes (LP) saw us go to penalties, only to loss by the odd kick in 32!

Finally we went into the last game of the season knowing that a win and a defeat or draw for Gimnasia (LP) would see us take 2nd place, unthinkable after such a retched start to the campaign. Luckily we hosted Quilmes, bottom of the table, already relegated and basically a miserable shell of a club.... alas we took until the 2nd half to break them down and once we did, the goals rained in to give us a 3-0 win. To our delight Gimnasia (LP) could only muster a draw at Newell's, so 2nd place was ours, behind a shock Champion in Colon.

2016/17 (Pre-Season)

Primera Division

Hopes were obviously high this pre-season after our stunning run in to claim 2nd place in the Torneo Finale and a slot in the Copa Sudamericana. We needed to push on, not just to continue our league form and impress on all fronts, but also a good Torneo Inicial would give us a shot at a place in the Copa Libertadores via the 'Calender Year' table.

The choice was to stick or twist and with a little bit of financial flexibility, we gambled on bringing in some experienced Argentine players to compliment those youngsters who had done so well from our academy. We also spent $2m on importing Paraguayan full back Coronel as we made a calculated risk.

1617ins_zps3a6eb91d.png

Alongside this the board allowed me to keep all our better players from last season, so the rewards were all to play for as we looked the strongest yet... on paper at least!

Season 2016/17 (Part One)

Primera Divison : Torneo Inicial

Understandably we came into this season with high expectations, coming off the back of last season PLUS the addition of a few more faces to add depth and experience to our squad. So imagine our surprise when we turned out at Newell's Old Boys for our opening fixture, only to get trounced 8-2!

Things didnt really improve after that either, as although we kicked off our Copa Sudamericana campaign with a 3-1 win at home to Velez in the 2nd Preliminary Round, we would lose in the league at Lanus (2-1) and then at home to Estudiantes (LP) 3-0.

A 2-1 home win over perennial stragglers Huracan gave me some hope, however that was soon dashed as our Copa Sudamericana run was ended abruptly with a 5-1 2nd leg loss to Velez and an early exit 6-4 on aggregate.

1617bregin_zpsfda19775.png

With Pizzini injured and the board disappointed at our start, it was clear that we had to take a look at our situation and roll back the moves we had made in pre-season. Unfortunately alongside that, we had to bear the brunt of our star players wanting an exit route, and without the comfort of Continental football to offer them, the for sale signs went up at Independiente and it wasnt long before the exit door began revolving.

outs1617_zps1142adad.png

The most notable sales saw Vilalba and Breitenbruch move to Mexico for a combined $9m as Tigres pinched half of our defence in one swoop. Whilst the dangerous Monserrat would join up with fellow ex-El Rojo players in Prague, as Sparta once again came calling with their cheque book.

Finally and arguably most importantly, Francisco Pizzini will also leave the club as he agreed a move to Swiss Champions Grasshopper for $7.5m, a move not motivated by financial gain.. but to allow Pizzini to develop his career after solid service to us in the past 3 seasons.

Season 2016/17 (Part Two)

Primera Divison : Torneo Inicial

So with players leaving and changes a plenty in the team, we carried on looking to revive a season that has been a catastrophe from the start.

But things didnt improve, River Plate would hit 5 past us, then consecutive home losses to Arsenal de Sarandi and All Boys left a bitter taste in our mouths, as Monserrat signed off with a couple of goals in front of the home fans. Another defeat, this time at Belgrano left us at the foot of the table with no where to hide and little hope of resurrection.

Fortunately Instituto at home was the tonic we needed, as they being a little worse than us, helped us gain a 2-1 win and some slight relief from the misery before. However 2 more home games collected just 1pt, as Pizzini signed off with a goal in our draw with Velez infront of his home crowd.
