Even before the Juventus charter flight touched down in Turin-Caselle Airport in Torino it was all over the news that manager Luigi Del Neri was fired. He has been under hard pressure all season and this loss was the final straw. The former Greece coach Otto Rehhagel is according to the newspapers the favorite to take over the “Old lady”.

29/10/11 Serie A

Just days after the huge win over Juventus the teams lays a real stinker at home against Parma. In the first half Kryvtsov make an unnecessary penalty. Lavezzi gets Napoli back to even only to see Parma score the goal winner of with a few minutes left on the clock.

When Northwood was willing to change his season expectations to title contenders the board decided to put up an astonishing £37mil. That will be in addition to the £19mil the team have already used on new players before this season.

The Napoli camp has not been willing to mention any names on possible transfer targets at this point.

Napoli had two balls bouncing off the woodwork before Cavani finally managed to put it in the net just minutes before halftime. In the second half Cagliari got an easy goal on what looked like a keeper mistake and despite a Napoli pressure for the rest of the game they were unable to produce the game winner.

Not a good start to Napoli’s title run.

The game saw a return of Popov after his long injury break.

2 SSC Napoli

1 AS Bari

Edinson Cavani (65)

Sergiy Kryvtsov (81)

Napoli had a horrible first half in a game where a lot of young players got to play. Newly bought GK Rubinho held Napoli in the game by only allowing Bari a single goal and then “veteran” Cavani made it 1-1 just before the half.

In the second half Napoli played a lot better but Bari held on all the way to the 81st minute when Kryvtsov headed inn a free kick.

15/01/12 Serie A

0 AS Livorno Calcio

Ezequiel Lavezzi (17)

Luigi Vitale (26)

Edinson Cavani (29)

1 Atalanta BC

3 SSC Napoli

Andrea Poli (23)

Ezequiel Lavezzi (45)

Edinson Cavani (90+2p)

5 minutes in to the second half Atalanta had a player sent off and after that the result was given. Napoli held on to the ball and added a 3rd goal on a penalty in stoppage time.

22/01/12 Serie A

0 SSC Napoli

0 AS Bari

This time it only took 8 minutes before Napoli was a man up. But even with a 17-3 in the shots statistic Napoli never managed to get the ball in the net. Edinson Cavani (41)

Napoli was lucky to get 3 points home from Sicily today. Palermo was for much of the game the better team and for a long time it looked like a draw. But another corner goal by Kryvtsov and a little bit of magic by Cavani changed that. Then it didn’t matter that Kryvtsov made an own goal late in stoppage time.

30/01/12 Transfer News

2 S.S.C Napoli

Napoli has now lost 3 of there last four games and looks like a team in crises. That not a good thing for a manager who just spend £25mil of the owners money to upgrade the team.

It will not help any that the next game is a road game against form strong AC Milan

Editors note:

My lack of experience from coaching in the Italian league has just shined thru. Last season we made a deal for this year for a Brazilian youngster that looked like a nice young talent with some upside without thinking much about it.

The problem now is that this minor trade is now preventing signing a major contract with Chelsea’s Ramires due to the “one non-EU player from aboard pr season” rule.

Napoli dominates a Juventus team with nothing to play for on the road. With just one game left to play in the league Napoli is just 1 point behind Palermo who will play Inter on the road in the final game of the year.

It was a Napoli team without Hamsik in the decisive game of the season against AC Milan. But with Christian Eriksen back in the starting lineup and in front of 60.000 people at home at San Paolo Napoli still had enough to get the win over a tame AC Milan team (who fired there manager after the game).

And when Palermo also lost to Inter, the Partenopei could finally celebrate there first league title since the Maradona days back in 1990.

01/06/13 Champions League News

In a game between two English teams, Arsenal took home the biggest trophy in European football with a late goal by Theo Walcott. Chelsea didn’t make it easy for themselves when John Obi Mikel was sent off after just 22 minutes.

With Aston Villa winning the Europa League a few weeks earlier both the big European trophies are now back in England.

Several of the regular starters were not ready to go and some backups got a chance to shine. The deciding goal came 3 minutes in to overtime when E Lavezzi scored on a fast break.

And with that news the 2012/13 season comes to an end.

Authors note.

For the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 season the format will change a bit as I have already played those seasons but don’t have the notes to do the detailed write-up. Instead I will document the history of all the players that have been thru Napoli in that timeframe and what have happened to there careers. There will also be footnotes (1) on a lot of the teams and players that have made and impact during this period.

Feel free to ask questions on specific teams, tournaments or players of interest.

1) Impossible to write without footnotes after reading “The book of basketball” by the Sportsguy Bill Simmons.

Napoli.jpgGK Morgan De Sanctis (Italy)

p2325.jpg

Winning the 2012/13 season and the Italian Cup is the last thing De Sanctis does for Napoli. Before the 2013/14 season the now 36-year old keeper losses his job in the starting lineup. He spent his last year with Napoli on the bench only getting one start in a single Cup game.

His contract is not renewed and instead he joins up with Zola (2)in Siena. He concedes 92 goals in 37 games and the team finish last in Serie A and is relegated. After the 2015/16 season De Sanctis decided to retire form professional football.

2) Gianfranco Zola was in Siena between 2012 and 2014 as the team’s manager. In that time span he was relegated from the Seria A but also won the Serie B the year after. He joined Bolton in December 2014 and has kept the club around mid table in the EPL since his arrival.

Napoli.jpgGK Rubinho (Brazil)

5142_rubinho.jpg

The replacement for Morgan De Sanctis in the Napoli goal is unknown Brazilian keeper Rubinho. He came to the club before the 2011/12 season from Torino on a £1mil transfer. The two first years with the team he is the backup for De Sanctis and only gets six starts in the first team.

Before the 2013/14 season he is handed the starting job. He does a decent job behind a somewhat shaky defensive line and allows 1.25 Con/90. He is excellent one-on-one but struggles with crosses and to get the play started.

To start the 2014/15 season he struggles again, allowing 24 goals in just 15 games. When Napoli finally decides to spend money on a quality keeper Rubinho is pushed to the sideline and is quickly forgotten. After the season Napoli has no interest in renewing his contract and he travels home to Brazil and joins Bahia (3).

3) Bahia has dominated the Bahia State Championship but has struggled in the first division. The Brazilian league has the last few years been dominated by Sao Paulo and Corinthians who have won 5 of the last 6 titles. The only title won by another team was the 2013 season who had Palmira’s winning there 5th title in franchise history.

Napoli.jpgGK Viktor Noring (Sweden)

9918_viktor_noring.jpg

At the same time as De Sanctis is benched, Napoli pays Motherwell £2mil for a 22-year old Viktor Noring. 10 days after he joins his new club he debuts on the Swedish national team against Cyprus. With Napoli he doesn’t get the playing time he got in Scotland and instead turns in to a solid backup. He gets regular playing time in the Swedish (4) national team (11 caps) but never gets a real chance in Napoli.

He is vocal about his displeasure about lack of playing time and agrees with the club to be transfer listed during the 2015/16 season. With an asking price just around £4mil no team shows interest in the Swedish player during the season and just a few weeks before the 2016/17 season is ready to kick off Noring still find himself on the Napoli bench.

4) Sweden finished second in the European Championship in 2012 when they lost the final 0-2 to Germany. After that it went downhill. In the last game of the 2014 World Cup qualifier they lost 0-6 to Croatia and missed the World Cup. Erik Hamren was fired and Sven Göran Eriksson hired. Still the team didn’t manage to win a single game in 2014 and the dropped to 45th in the world. In 2015 the team was back on track and qualified for the 2016 European Championship coming up in France.

Napoli.jpgGK

(France)

stephane-ruffier-rf_55487.jpg

Since manager Tom Northwood took over Napoli in 2010 they had never allowed less then 30 goals in a single season and despite winning the title in 2013 they allowed the second most goals of the top-8 teams in the league (4) . To take the next step it was clear that they needed to stiffen up the defends and a top caliber keeper was high on Napoli’s wish list. When the teams started to look around the big names were not interested in moving to Napoli and the few players interested had salary demands way outside of what Napoli was willing/capable to offer . Napoli then tried hard to sign Igor Akinfeev from CSKA Moscow but problems with work permit stopped that deal from going thru.

The solution for Napoli was to spend £7.5mil on Stèphane Ruffier from AS Monaco in the French league. He joined the team when the transfer window opened in the start of January 2015 and took over the starting job right away. He finishes his first half season with nine clean sheets in 20 starts and a 6.98 overall rating. The year after he allows one goal pr game and records 14 clean sheets in the 37 league games he starts.

Ruffier is perhaps not the world class player Napoli was looking for but he is a solid last man. He got a good command of the arrear and great reflexes.

On 10/10/15 at age 29 he finally gets his international debut for France in a 2-0 win over USA.

Before the start of the 2016/17 season the Frenchman is the clear number one in the Napoli goal with no real competition behind him.

4) Napoli allowed 36 goals in 38 games. Only Roma with 41 goals allowed more

Napoli.jpgGK Andrea Olivieri (Italy)

question-mark3a.jpg

The last of the Napoli keepers is a young (20 years old) Italian keeper who have come up thru the teams youth system and been part of the Napoli U20 team who have won the Group 1 in both 2014 and 2015. He is still very raw and not anywhere near being a lock for the future, but at the moment he is the only Italian keeper on the roster.

Napoli.jpgDR Camillo Zúñiga (Colombia)

tumblr_lr9mz9AjMw1ql87q4o1_100.jpg

In front of the Napoli keepers the team has always played with a 4-back-line. The Napoli defense has never been the team’s strongpoint since GM Thomas Northwood took over the club and several different combinations have been tried. Zúñiga was one of the few constants and played solid but unspectacular every year from 2012 to 2015. In his 120 games over four season he only earned just 4 ”Man of the match” and have never scored a goal for Napoli but he has also made very few mistakes. Before the 2015/16 season the now 30-year old Camillo Zúñiga was moved to the sideline and was used as a backup instead but every time he was sent on the pitch he still preformed.

He is one of the few Napoli players with 5 medals and is a solid contributor for the Colombian national team where he got over 60 games in his career. His Napoli contract is up after the 2016/17 season but with Napoli’s current movement towards Italian youth and his already reduced role it’s unlikely that he will get an extension.

Napoli.jpgDL Emiliano Insúa (Argentina)

index.jpg

On the left side Napoli played defender Emiliano Insúa for the better part of three seasons. He was signed from Aston Villa (5) in the January 2012 transfer window as the first major (£8mil) new purchase by GM Tom Northwood.

He played very good when healthy, but without any depth at the position Napoli had to bring inn another left defender and Insúa didn’t care for the competition. Near the end of the 2014/15 season Insúa almost got in to fight with his manager. Insúa had not played very well (6.72) during the first part of the season and was sidelined for a big game. After the game he stormed in to the manager’s office and other players had to step between the two.

The next day he was put on the transfer listed and sent to the reserve team. Just a few days later a new DL was presented in a press conference and at the same time the sale of Insúa to Fulham for £3.3mil was announced.

Back in England he had a very good season (7.29) for a Fulham team qualifying for Europe after winning the FA Cup for the first time in club history.

5) Aston Villa have done very well in the last few years lead by Alan Shearer as there manager. In the domestic league they have qualified for Europe every year since 2011 even if they have never finished better then 4th (2014/15). In 2012 the team won the Euro League with a 2-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in the final and also won the Super Cup over Arsenal. They have also won the English League Cup twice (2014 and 2015).

Alan Shearer left the club in December 2014 to take over Man City (more on that later) and Mexican Hugo Sanchez was appointed the new manager. Under Sanchez the team struggled. Still Sanchez was hired by Chelsea in the start of 2016 (also more on that later) and Aston Villa selected Southampton manager Nigel Adkins as the new man in charge.

The team’s top player has been Yohan Cabaye who the club picked up in the 2011/12 season on a £11.25mil transfer from LOSC Lill. Another top player for Aston Villa was Gabriel Torje who was sold to Real Madrid for £22mil just before the 2016/17 season was ready to kick off.
