Sadiona Tactic - The 4-2-3-1 [10.2]

Recommended Posts

'Sadiona' is a made up word which I named my new tactic. The 4-2-3-1 has always been my 'tactics crush' and in most versions of FM my transfer market activity will usually lead me to play this formation, or a slight variant. The last time I used wingers was, unbelievably, on FM07.

The Sadiona sets itself up like so:

GK

DR-DC-DC-DL

MC-MC

AMC-AMC-AMC

ST

With the following player roles/duties:

GK - Goalkeeper / Defend

Fullbacks - Fullbacks / Auto

DCs - Central Defenders / Defend

MCl - Central Midfielder / Attack

MCr - Central Midfielder / Defend

AMCl & AMCr - Attacking Midfielder / Attack

AMCc - Attacking Midfielder / Support

ST - Advanced Forward / Attack

The team instructions are set up like so:

Philosophy - Fluid

Starting Strategy - Standard

Passing Style - Shorter

Marking - Man Marking

Target Man - The ST

Target Man Supply - To feet

{all the other instructions are left as default}

Below I've outlined how I use the strategies and shouts. This may be different for you, as your players may react differently to mine. So if these don't give the desired effect, please do experiment (and report back).

Start of the Game

{home / away}

->Expected to Win: Attacking / Control

->Close game, but favourites: Control / Control

->Even Stevens: Standard / Counter

->Slight underdogs: Counter / Counter

->Expected to lose: Defend / Defend

I will also, at the start of every game, issue these shouts:

  • Look for Overlap
  • Work Ball into Box
  • Drop Deeper [Find it makes you much more solid at the back]

Depending on how strong you think your opponents are, I sometimes use these shouts:

  • Play Narrower (against a strong passing side)
  • Pass to Feet (against stronger opponents, or if you want to try and build slowly)
  • Pass to Space (struggling to break down opponents)

Leading 2-0 at the break

->Everyone has their own ideas for defending a lead. I tend to bring the strategy down to counter, and then issue the following shouts:

  • Drop Deeper
  • Play Narrower
  • Work Ball into Box
  • Retain Possession
  • Stay on Feet

As I said, it's always hard to tell people how to use shouts, as everyone tends to use them differently.

Shutting up Shop

I've also made a variant of this tactic used to attempt to defend one goal leads in the last 10 minutes. I switch to the 'Contain' strategy and use the following shouts:

  • Drop Deeper
  • Play Narrower
  • Clear Ball to Flanks
  • Retain Possession
  • Play Even Safer
  • Stay on Feet

The formation is a 4-1-4-1 formation and you can download it here.

Feedback is most welcome, hope this brings you some success :)
